In this episode, I'll reveal the backstory of my participation in Fast Fall Women. But first, what was I thinking? I went from no one knowing about my experiences being raised by a mom with manic depression – to today, the world being able to hear one of my most vulnerable moments for $18.95. Here's the truth: Today marks a milestone for me as a published author in a book that features these writing goddesses: Amy Tan, Jane Smiley, Caroline Leavitt, Bobbie Ann Mason, Honor Moore, Darien Hsu Gee, Ilene Beckerman, Lynn Peril as well as new writers like myself. It's a big deal and this is why you should tune into today's episode especially if you've ever wanted to tell your story (or feel scared to). Imagine harnessing the whimsical power of your childhood imagination and translating it into the real world as a mompreneur. That's the journey I've been on, and in this episode, I share the heart and soul of it all. Listen in as I explore how motherhood can transform your relationship with your imagination and how you can navigate through the ups and downs of life using this powerful tool. Welcome to episode 194. Do you have a great business idea stuck in your head? What if getting it out of your head would put $30K in your pocket? Why would anyone procrastinate on executing such an idea? Meet Carin today's live coaching session participant. This is her situation and yet she has been procrastinating launching her $30K idea. Does this sound familiar? The conversation started with this $30K challenge yet as is often the case for moms in business specifically there is often more going on in the background that is affecting our sanity. So what might be the root cause of Carin's hesitation to release her idea into the world and just stating selling it? Tune in to find out! You'll hear how through candid and brutally honest coaching questions I uncovered that her procrastinating the launch of this idea was just a symptom of something much bigger: she is actually a hesitant to let go of her old life ( she's in the middle of an incomplete divorce). So it turns out, the issue is not really the offer, the credentials, or the details of binging her offer to the world. Sound familiar? Tune in. if this episode resonates with you as a mom in business then sign-up for a free break-through session with me. You will hear how self-aware Carin is regarding the world of coaching. Use this coaching session, to see if the areas of your own life where you might require a therapist instead of a coach. I'm sharing this conversation because the truth is that not every business challenge can be fixed on the surface. No number of affirmations, marketing funnel hacks, or shifts in money stories are going to change you when you are in the middle of a personal life tragedy like a divorce. So consider this episode a good gauge of where a coach's expertise may be insufficient. In this episode, you will hear these ideas expressed: ● How to know when procrastinating is just a symptom vs. the real issue in business stagnation ● Accepting change vs. resisting it; what can this look like for moms with a lot on their minds ● Signs that you are avoiding a bigger emotional issue by investing in temporary business fixes ● The fear of big life changes and getting back up ● Investing in coaching vs. when you might need to invest in therapy ● What questions might you need to answer to get to the bottom of your procrastinating? ● How to address pain beyond the surface when coaches are not helping ● What it sounds like when coaching is not the answer SHARE this episode with a mom founder, entrepreneur, or creator who is procrastinating launching a new offer. Together, we shed light on the tangible tools and lessons that can aid her quest for progress and growth. She has done a lot of work to fight that story of survival but she still finds herself using it as the reason why she is not earning at her full potential nor making progress in writing her memoir. About Caroline Caroline writes music about what it's like, as a mom and an artist. She sought coaching to muster the courage to redefine myself outside of society's expectations (and my own expectations) in order to find something truer. Caroline also shares the realities of juggling multiple roles - as an artist, a mother, and a professional. She talks about the courage and vulnerability it takes to follow a passion project, despite the hurdles life throws at you. In her journey of expanding her life possibilities and navigating the joys of parenting, Caroline's story serves as a testament to the power of passion and resilience. Be prepared to journey with us through a narrative of self-rediscovery, resilience, and embracing your true identity with Caroline. In this episode, you will hear these ideas expressed: Turning 40 is a reckoning point when you take a look at your life and make different choices moving forward. Why might a mom with two young kids but the means to focus on her artistic interests NOT move forward? What if you don't have anything to lose too? What beliefs might be stopping you? What if being ridiculous and following your passion lit you up as a mom? Is being an excited mom worth following a creative adventure? Choosing a path where you feel respected. What do you need to hear to feel respected and accepted by others based on your choices? How to get over other people's perceptions and approaching challenges from a position of power Seeing jealousy as a sign that you may be interested in a topic or creative adventure – in comes Taylor Swift Making a pivot into a creative adventure: What would it look like to actually be an artist? What would a weekend look like? Not until you take yourself seriously will others take you seriously Get to that place of how you want to feel to drive your goals and specific steps forward What if no one else takes interest? How can you let go of needing that acceptance? The idea of 'three chords and the truth' in music, and the importance of feeling acknowledged and accepted for our decisions Owning her identity as an artist, practical and societal concerns, family's reaction, and motivation to create her passion project How the support of those closest to us can show us the respect we need to pursue our passions SHARE this episode with a mom founder, entrepreneur, or creator for whom a fear of judgment or not feeling accepted might be getting in her way of an incredible creative entrepreneurial adventure. In this conversation, we will discuss why representation matters especially for children, how you can expand the perspective of someone as a mom or in other ways by being the first person in any category to use your special voice and get a look at what asking for precisely what you want is a good thing and how that contributed to the children's book Your Special Voice. Temi Adamolekun is the author of Your Special Voice. This empowering board book inspires young readers to use their own special voices to make a difference in the world. If you want to make a difference, but you don't know where to start Begin by searching way deep down to find what's in your heart Whether your voice shines through singing, drawing, or dancing—whether it's soft or loud, kind or proud—everyone has a voice that can effect change. This empowering and heartfelt message is conveyed through a beautiful, lyrical rhyme that will encourage even the youngest readers to think about what's important to them. Temi is from Nigeria, grew up in England, and now lives in San Francisco with her husband and son. Temi runs her own communications agency and is an active and vocal member of her community. She has written essays on topics such as anti-racist parenting and the importance of Black protagonists in children's books. She is an avid reader who has dreamed of writing books for children for a long time, and she is delighted to have made that dream come true. This conversation not only provides a deeper understanding of the importance of representation in children's books but also encourages us to leverage the power of our unique voices to create a significant impact in our lives and those around us. Tune in to be part of this compelling conversation. In this episode, you will hear these ideas expressed: The difference between those who achieve and who don't is…. Why done is better than perfect Do moms really not have time to read? How Temi - a voracious reader - keeps it up The reason why it's sometimes easier to focus on other people's wants How did she partner up with an illustrator who met her specific criteria…a black woman with Nigerian roots? And how to ask for what you really want. What Nigerian cultural nuances were at play whilst writing the book or partnering with a fellow Nigerian on the topic of using your voice as a woman The superpower of bringing cross-cultural perspectives, UK, US, and Nigeria Why representation matters in children's board books The courage to use your voice: Does your special voice need to be loud? Is whispering impactful? Exactly how does Temi run a business and mother a son and still stop her workday in time for dinner? Inspiring courage to share, and teaching her son the publication process How did writing this book affect her son? What's now possible and normal for him? A Simon & Schuster published mom is now his normal…. Sharing unique voices takes courage and can have a positive impact. How Temi's book, “Your Special Voice” encourages children to use their unique voices, emphasizing the importance of boundaries and structure SHARE this episode with a mom founder, entrepreneur, or creator who is seeking a children's book to read that celebrates the diverse and inclusive voices of many children. What if YOU were the best teacher or coach to teach your kids THE life skills they'll need to become resilient, emotionally intelligent, or even better at advocating for themselves? What if... I believe that our kids can handle more than we can even imagine. Way more. Did you hear about the kids lost in the Amazon who fended for themselves and survived? That's such an outlier situation and it's SO scary for me to imagine but what it did remind me is: our kids can be resilient and tougher than the obstacles life will present in front of them. Hasn't this been the case for you? You've been through some stuff yet here you are reading this and tuning into Unimaginable Wellness. There's something in you that helped you rise up or beyond several obstacles so why not teach your kids how to do the same this summer season? That's what I'm doing this summer....because I've got lessons and stuff to teach...you do too! This summer why not impart some of your skills intentionally to your kid/s? This week's episode is very simply the use of my own fertile imagination. A fertile imagination is a mindset that sits at the cross-section of who you had to be when you birthed or waited for your bub, the rebellious teen you, and your inner child with gigantic ideas about what her life could be like. I'm writing a book about this mindset that you may want to learn more about HERE... https://www.melissallarena.com/waitlist/ Now on to this week's episode.... I will be spending a good amount of time with my three sons. My identical twins are nine and my eldest is twelve. We could work on a ton of things this summer. Math is one key topic we can focus on. Personally, I was not very strong in math so I'd have to outsource that. We could focus on building teamwork skills. I've enrolled my kids in sports camps and again for those experiences I wouldn't make for a great coach. Not sure if you are like me but I was picked last for gym sports teams. This brings me to this summer season. There are emotional fortitude sort of lessons that I am best suited to teach and in this week's episode, I decided to reveal a bit about what I'll be covering this summer with my kids. In this episode you'll hear: -how I'll be taking my kids to fun places and using them as training grounds to up their resiliency etc. -what you can try to teach your kids during this summer or another break (age-appropriate ideas) -where we are with these mini-challenges thus far ($7.49 saved thus far) -why you might have been selected as the mom of your kids (if you've got a skill then chances are your kids will need to learn it to fully thrive and that's why you are their mom) SHARE this episode with a mom founder, entrepreneur, or creator who seeks summer ideas to take full advantage of a summer at home spent with the kids. If you give to MinistryWatch during the month of February, we'll send them a copy of the book “Handling Allegations in a Ministry” by Theresa Lynn Sidebotham. This is a valuable resource for pastors, elders, deacons, ministry leaders, and active and involved church members and ministry donors. It's our thank you gift for a donation of any size to MinistryWatch this month. Just go to the MinistryWatch website and hit the donate button at the top of the page. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Jessica Eturralde, Kim Roberts, Shannon Cuthrell, Bob Smietana, Steve Rabey, Alejandra Molina, Christina Darnell, and Rod Pitzer. Until next time, may God bless you.
On today's program, one of the largest United Methodist churches in the country, and the largest in South Carolina, is preparing to leave the denomination. And the Internal Revenue Service is far behind in its efforts to process Form 990s. This backlog is a blow to transparency and accountability. We'll explain why. And we remember pastor, author, and hymn writer Jack Hayford, who died last week at age 88. We begin today with former Celebration Church pastor Stovall Weems. He and his wife Kerri have settled with First Citizens Bank after a claim stating they defaulted over $700,000 in unpaid debt. A few final notes… Last week I mentioned how grateful I was to those of you who contributed to our year-end fundraising campaign, but I didn't have a final number. Now I do. We had what was for us an ambitious goal of $81,000 for the months of November and December combined. We ended up raising about $87,000. So, again, THANK YOU. Also, I mentioned earlier the importance of the Form 990. We use them every day here at MinsitryWatch, and we encourage donors to look at them before they give to a ministry. In the past we've done a webinar entitled “How To Find and Read A Form 990.” This webinar has proven so popular that we've repeated it three or four times over the past two years. And we're going to do it again. It will take place on Feb. 1 at 4 pm ET. Just check the daily MinistryWatch email for a link to the registration page. It's absolutely free, but you do need to register to get all the links and details. Finally, it's been a while since I've asked you, our listeners, to rate or leave a comment on your podcast app. But our listenership has nearly doubled in the past year, and if you are new to the podcast, please do leave us a rating and a comment. Not only do these comments help us know what you're thinking so we can make improvements, but the more ratings and comments we have, the more visible the podcast becomes to search engines who make those automated recommendations that you sometimes see when you are listening to podcasts. In other words, your ratings help other people find us. That's a huge help to us, and it helps us expand our reach. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Jessica Eturralde, Anne Stych, Kim Roberts, Andrea Suozzo, Yonat Shimron, Alejandra Molina, Christina Darnell, and Rod Pitzer. A special thanks to ProPublica for contributing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.
On today's program, two Florida ministry leaders that we first reported on during the summer have been arrested and charged with defrauding taxpayers out of $8-million in Payroll Protection Program funds. And in Virginia, The Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes Christian values, was denied service at a restaurant in Richmond, this month on the basis of the group's position on abortion and same-sex marriage. We'll have the details on both these stories later in the program. We begin today with news that a Presbyterian church in the Chicago area is being investigated for firing an employee when she complained of gender discrimination. I want our listeners to know that this will be our last regular podcast episode of the year. We'll drop one more episode between Christmas and New Year's – it will be an episode that highlights the top 10 stories of the year. So, since this is our last regular episode, I wanted to say how grateful we are to those of you who are regular listeners to the podcast. We have nearly doubled our listenership in the past year and given all the podcast options out there, I want you to know that I'm honored that you consider this podcast worth your time each week. If you are a regular listener, and you'd like to see this podcast and the work of MinistryWatch survive and thrive, I'd like to humbly suggest that you make a year-end gift to MinistryWatch. We are not a mega-ministry, and we don't aspire to become one. Our budget is less than $500,000 per year, and we are trying to raise $81,000 by the end of this month. We're about half-way there, which is good, but that also means that we have a long way to go. If you'd like to pitch in to ensure that MinistryWatch remains a viable endeavor, please go to MinistryWatch.com and it the “donate” button at the top of the page. Oh, yes, and one more thing: I hope you have a Merry Christmas! The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Kim Roberts, Anne Stych, Jessica Eturralde, Dale Chamberlain, Alejandra Molina, and Christina Darnell. A special thanks to The Christian Chronicle and ChurchLeaders.com for contributing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.
On today's program, James Dobson is stepping aside from the ministry he founded after turning Focus on the Family into an evangelical powerhouse. We'll have details. And during this election week, we have a couple of stories of pastors who are mixing politics and the pulpit. At least one is under investigation. We begin today with an interesting story coming from one of the bastions of fundamentalism in this country: Bob Jones University. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Scott Barkley, Jeremy Schwartz, Jessica Priest, Alejandra Molina, Steve Rabey, Anne Stych, Jessica Eturralde, Christina Darnell—and you, Warren. Special thanks to Church Leaders.com for providing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.
On today's program, a church does something it doesn't often do. It apologizes for its past. We'll share why. We also look more closely at the $100-million evangelistic ad campaign called “He Gets Us.” And we note the passing of an evangelical elder statesman. Steve Douglass, who helped Cru grow into one of the largest ministries in the world, is dead at age 77. We'll have an appreciation. We begin today with news that Celebration Church's founders have reopened a defamation lawsuit against their former church. A final reminder that I'll be hosting a lunch for MinistryWatch friends in Newport Beach, California, on November 15. If you live in LA, especially Orange County, you should be getting an email from me with more information, but if you want to make sure that you get an invitation, please email me and I'll make sure you get the details. All of these lunches are FREE. They're just our way of saying THANK YOU for being a part of our work. Secondly, we've started something new here at MinistryWatch. We're doing a quarterly survey of the senior executive in each of the MinistryWatch 1000 ministries. The first article based on that survey is on the website now. And I describe the survey more fully in this week's MinistryWatch EXTRA episode, so if you haven't heard that episode, please check it out. Special thanks to The Baptist Press and ProPublica for providing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.
On today's program, we take a look at the Bible translation industry. We ask the question: How much does it really cost to translate the Bible. We also look at a milestone for the Christian ministry Samaritan's Purse. It will hit $1-billion in revenue this year. And one of evangelicalism's flagship seminaries, Fuller Seminary, has the first African American president in its history. We'll have details. We begin today with news that 2,000 churches and Christian ministries have asked the U.S. Senate to oppose the “Respect For Marriage Act.” A Reminder: if you make a donation to MinistryWatch during the month of September, we'll send you a copy of “Restoring All Things” as our thank you gift. This book is one that I wrote with the Colson Center's John Stonestreet, and it features stories of great ministries doing great work all around the country. Just go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the DONATE button at the top of the page. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. On today's program, one of evangelicalism's most prominent leaders, Ted Haggard, his hit new lows. We'll have the latest. And the American Bible Society latest president lasted less than 90 days. The organization has had five presidents in the past 10 years. We've got news of the latest changes at this two-century old ministry. We begin today with the latest chapter in the story of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. Last week, Lighten Group, announced it was shutting down. Lighten Group is a new ministry started by Sarah Davis, former CEO of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM) and daughter of late Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias. Lighten Group, whose team is comprised of former RZIM employees, was founded in the fall of 2021 and was supported by RZIM funding. It is not clear what has happened to the millions of dollars in assets owned by RZIM when the organization imploded in the aftermath of a sex abuse scandal. Before we go, a reminder: if you made a donation to MinistryWatch during the month of September, we'll send you a copy of my book “Restoring All Things.” It's a book that I co-wrote with The Colson Center's John Stonestreet. On today's program, Liberty University is receiving complaints from veterans who use the school's online program as part of their GI Bill benefits. We also have the latest in the slow-moving schism in the United Methodist Church. Plus, a look at Prosperity Gospel preacher Kenneth Copeland. He's in the Ministry Spotlight. We begin today with something you don't hear Christian leaders do too much these days, and that's apologize. That apology came from Andy Wood. Wood was named as Rick Warren's successor at Saddleback Church after Warren retires. He has apologized for inviting Mark Driscoll to speak at the 2021 Echo Leadership Conference. Before we go: Just a reminder that if you make a donation to MinistryWatch during the month of August, you'll receive a free one-year subscription to WORLD Magazine. We made this offer last year, and got a great response. But I know that we have a lot of people listening to the podcast today that weren't with us a year ago – I know that because the podcast has nearly doubled in size in the past year. So if you're new, this is a fantastic opportunity to pick up a subscription to WORLD and support our work at the same time. On today's program, we look at spiritual abuse. At what point is a difference in opinion, or a disagreement with the pastor, real abuse? It's a question lots of churches, pastors, and church members are having to grapple with. Also, we look at an online ministry that started as a hobby, but is now generating more than 100-million page views a year from people wanting answers to tough spiritual questions. We begin today with news about a Tennessee megachurch that has defaulted on its building payments. The building that housed Venue Church is set to be auctioned off from the steps of the local courthouse Aug. 24, just six months after a video surfaced allegedly showing its head pastor kissing a woman who was not his wife. A notice of foreclosure that appeared in The Chattanooga Times Free Press said Venue Church has defaulted on payments on the more than $2 million the church owes on a property at 6401 Lee Highway in Chattanooga, its main campus. On today's program, students at Seattle Pacific University end their sit-in for LGBTQ rights, but the controversy at this Christian school is not likely to go away. And we check in with some prominent pro-life ministries to see how the Dobbs decision, the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, will impact their work. We begin today with a report that rapidly rising prices are having a significant impact on ministries that provide food and housing for the poor. A few housekeeping items before we go. First, a big thank you to those who gave us a fiscal year end gift last month. We had nearly 200 donors during the month of June who gave us about $20,000, which barely got us to our goal. But it was an ambitious goal, and I am grateful for the support. I also wanted to mention that I was in Southern California last week and had the pleasure of hosting a luncheon of MinistryWatch supporters in Newport Beach. A hearty thank-you to those who came out for that event. And I wanted to mention that I'll be doing a similar lunch in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 19. That's a Tuesday. If you live within driving distance of Des Moines and you'd like to attend, shoot me an email and we'll make sure you get an invitation. On today's program, we have updates on the situation at Grove City College. The Global Leadership Network – formerly known as the Willow Creek Association -- makes a comeback. And disgraced megachurch pastor Jack Schaap, convicted of sex crimes more than a decade ago, gets an early release from prison. We begin today with news that a controversial “discernment blogger” has been charged with DUI and for carrying a weapon. I want you to know that this program wouldn't exist without the support of people like you. We take no money from the ministries we cover. We don't charge a subscription or have a paywall. We are 100 percent donor supported. If you'd like to make a donation so that our work can continue, please go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the donate button at the top of the page. And now, you can now give via text. If this is your preferred way of giving, just text @ministrywatch to 52014. Again, that's @ministrywatch to 52014. If you have a story you'd like us to cover, or a ministry that you think needs a closer look, please email us. Our email is info@ministrywatch.com. On today's program, The Southern Baptist Convention could spend up to $4-million to deal with clergy sex abuse issues. And Grove City College is dealing with controversies related to “wokeness” and “critical race theory.” We begin today with the story of a church that has paid $8.3 million for a Tampa, Florida-area estate. Before we go: A couple of housekeeping items, you might say. First, I'll be on the Pilgrim Radio Network next week to discuss the role journalism can play in reforming the Evangelical Church. The Pilgrim Radio Network has ten stations and more than 30 translators in communities in Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, and California. So if you can listen to a Pilgrim station, check out that conversation. I'll also be sending a link around in our daily emails. Also a quick reminder that if you make a donation to MinistryWatch during the month of April, we'll send you Randy Alcorn's classic book on biblical stewardship called “Managing God's Money.” As I've said repeatedly, I think this is a book that every Christian should have in his or her library. Just go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the donate tab at the top of the page. Or, you can now give via text. If this is your preferred way of giving, just text @ministrywatch to 52014. Again, that's @ministrywatch to 52014. I tried it myself, and it was pretty easy. So if I can do it, anyone can. If you have a story you'd like us to cover, or a ministry that you think needs a closer look, please email us. Our email is info@ministrywatch.com. That will come directly to my desk, and we'll take it from there. Also, a reminder that you can help the program by leaving us a rating on your podcast app. The more ratings we get, the easier it is for others to find us. It's a quick, easy, and free way you can support MinistryWatch. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. Alejandra Molina is co-founding a language learning app, currently focusing on medical Spanish during the pandemic. She doesn't have a tech background, but believes in figuring things out with a willingness to learn, to find inspiring mentors, to see value in all of your previous experience, to put imperfect ideas out there and get feedback. "Take everything calmly," she says, noting a venture capitalist's advice that each VC would give different feedback based on their own backgrounds. It's a good reminder that when everybody and their uncle has an opinion on our professional goals, we have to be careful about who we listen to because everyone's opinion is based on their own backgrounds.

God is faithful. He’ll bring us through but, as He does, let’s remember that nearly everyone’s having a hard time.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On today's program, the Texas-based ministry Gospel for Asia files for creditor protection in Canada. Also on today's program, a British ministry that believes it;s possible for homosexuals to change says it has been the target of death threats. We're going to begin today with extended coverage of how the COVID-19 crisis is impacting churches and ministries, and how some churches are pushing back on government restrictions. While this is not a new story for us here at MinistryWatch, there have been some new developments this week. For example, Grace Community Church, in Sun Valley, California, made big news this week when it gathered indoors on Sunday, defying California regulations that aim to limit the spread of COVID-19. PLUS: I want to remind everyone about the new essay on our website on Matthew 18 and how it relates to journalism and the kind of investigative work we do here at MinistryWatch. If you're a supporter of our ministry – or a skeptic, not sure if watchdog journalism is the right approach – I think you'll find that article helpful. It's on the MinistryWatch website. Bentley says Christian leaders should think twice before taking government funds. Later in the program, we unpack a survey conducted by Charities Aid Foundation America that found a full 97 percent said they have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. Writers who contributed to today's program include Christina Darnell, Alejandra Molina, Jack Jenkins, Warren Smith, and Anne Stych. Happy Easter! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
(00:00-10:03): Not Even the Gates of a Hellish Pandemic Will Prevail Over God’s Church. Scripture doesn’t promise wealth or health or even life. What, then, does it promise? (1:01:05-1:11:40): Brett McCracken writes “Coronavirus Could Kill Consumer Christianity” in The Gospel Coalition.
