In this week's episode we are joined by our special guest Dave Christie to discuss his multifaceted journey in the business world. We kick things off by talking about the different ways social support manifests for entrepreneurs, from Facebook groups to in-person meetups. Dave draws on personal anecdotes, including his mischievous school days, where he paid younger students to buy snacks from him, showcasing his early entrepreneurial spirit. We discuss Dave's business ventures, including his environmental tech company, Take on Goliath, and his coaching and mentoring roles. All these roles reflect Dave's commitment to making a positive impact, whether through sustainability or mentorship. We explore what it means to "Take on Goliath," and how this relates to overcoming internal doubts and external challenges. Dave articulates the detrimental effects of vague instructions and highlights the power of clear, open-ended questions to foster genuine understanding. We also reflect on how COVID-19 has acted as both a challenge and an opportunity for change, offering a "safety net" for lifestyle adjustments and habit-forming. The conversation wraps up with a look at the nuances of coaching versus mentoring, the importance of critical feedback, and the value of a "critical friend" who challenges you with kindness.Timestamps00:00:00 - Introduction to Dave Christie and his background00:05:15 - Dave's early entrepreneurial days and school anecdotes00:10:30 - Social support for entrepreneurs: Facebook groups and meetups00:15:45 - The crucial role of resilience and learning from failure00:20:50 - Discussion on Dave's businesses: Take on Goliath and environmental tech00:26:10 - The importance of clear communication in the workplace00:31:00 - Teaching children resilience and the value of failure00:35:20 - COVID-19 as a catalyst for change and forming new habits00:38:10 - Nuances between coaching and mentoring00:40:30 - Amy Wilkinson wraps up the episodeWebsite Link: https://ohforfoodssake.co.uk/FB Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ohforfoodsakeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/oh-for-food-s-sake/You can follow us here on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oh_forfoodssake/For industry consulting from Lucy, connect with her on Instagram or LinkedIn.Find her on Instagram or LinkedIn for further support with industry coaching and facilitation from Amy.See you next time!

In today's episode, we tackle the often daunting task of giving honest feedback. We stress the importance of coupling care and empathy with directness to ensure input is both clear and kind. Amy introduces the concept of "Radical Candor," a methodology from Kim Scott's book, which emphasises caring deeply about colleagues while challenging them directly. We also share our personal experiences and challenges with giving feedback, including the common tendency to avoid confrontation due to people-pleasing instincts. To address these issues, we discuss practical feedback models, such as the AID model (Action, Impact, Development) and SBI (Situation, Behavior, Impact), which offer structured approaches for delivering feedback in a professional setting. The conversation then shifts to the four quadrants of feedback described in "Radical Candor": Radical Candor, Obnoxious Aggression, Manipulative Insincerity, and Ruinous Empathy. Each quadrant is explored in depth, providing you with a clearer understanding of effective and ineffective feedback styles.Lucy highlights the importance of creating genuine connections with colleagues to foster a supportive environment, while Amy emphasises the need for clarity and specificity in feedback.  We also touch on the utility of AI tools like ChatGPT to practise and refine feedback delivery.Throughout the episode, we underscore the necessity of celebrating team successes and maintaining open communication to build a positive workplace culture.Timestamps- [00:00:00] Radical Candor Introduction- [00:00:09] Episode Introduction by Lucy Wager and Amy Wilkinson- [00:00:25] Importance of Honest Feedback- [00:01:06] Common Challenges in Giving Feedback- [00:02:03] Lucy's Personal Struggles with Feedback- [00:02:52] The Dread of Giving Feedback- [00:03:09] Clear, is Kind - Brene Brown Quote- [00:04:21] Clarity and Impact of Feedback- [00:05:25] Feedback Models: AID and SBI- [00:06:48] Explaining the AID Model- [00:08:08] Explaining the SBI Model- [00:09:27] Introduction to Radical Candor by Kim Scott- [00:10:16] Principles of Radical Candor: Caring Deeply and Challenging Directly- [00:13:23] Empathy Towards Colleagues- [00:14:41] Radical Candor Quadrants- [00:15:11] Sponsor Acknowledgment: Dama Ingredients- [00:16:10] Sponsor Acknowledgment: Nemis Technologies- [00:17:35] Quadrant Breakdown: Obnoxious Aggression- [00:18:08] Quadrant Breakdown: Manipulative Insincerity- [00:19:25] Quadrant Breakdown: Ruinous Empathy- [00:20:47] How to Implement Radical Candor- [00:21:39] Building Better Relationships at Work- [00:23:08] Celebrating Successes in the Workplace- [00:25:04] Practical Tips for Delivering FeedbackLinks and Resources:Website Link: https://ohforfoodssake.co.uk/FB Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ohforfoodsakeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/oh-for-food-s-sake/You can follow us here on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oh_forfoodssake/For industry consulting from Lucy, connect with her on Instagram or LinkedIn.Find her on Instagram or LinkedIn for further support with industry coaching and facilitation from Amy.See you next time!

At around 11am on Thursday 18 February 1943 two students in Munich were arrested for distributing anti-Nazi pamphlets. By Monday they had been interrogated, tried, and executed along with another member of the resistance circle. Further arrests followed. From 15-27 February 2021 the White Rose Project will be following the events as they happened in real time through daily posts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. This year marks the 78th anniversary of the first White Rose trials. It's also a year when the dates and days of the week coincide. Imagine going about your normal routine on Monday, being arrested on Thursday, being interrogated over the weekend, and going to trial the following Monday morning. At the heart of our week is a live reading of the White Rose's resistance pamphlets, translated from German into English by student members of the White Rose Project. Dr Alex Lloyd (Fellow by Special Election in German, St Edmund Hall) will give a short introduction to the pamphlets. The readers are current and former students and academics, mirroring the membership of the original group: Sophie Caws, Eve Mason, Adam Rebick, Elba Slamecka, Sam Thompson, Amy Wilkinson, and Taylor Professor Emeritus of German Language and Literature, T.J. (Jim) Reed, FBA. The event will open and close with music by the award-winning vocal ensemble SANSARA, recorded on 22 February 2020. This event is supported by The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) and the University of Oxford's Public Engagement with Research Seed Fund. It is part of the White Rose Project, a research and public engagement initiative bringing the story of the White Rose resistance circle to English-speaking audiences. Dr Alexandra Lloyd is Fellow by Special Election in German at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. She has published widely on post-war Germany, most recently in her book Childhood, Memory, and the Nation: Young Lives under Nazism in Contemporary German Culture (Legenda, 2020). She is currently a Knowledge Exchange Fellow at TORCH working with the White Rose Foundation in Munich, and is Project Lead on a Public Engagement with Research Seed Fund project, ‘Resistance: The Story of the White Rose', in collaboration with the award-winning vocal ensemble SANSARA. Eve Mason is a final-year student of English and German at the Queen's College, Oxford. Her passion for translation led her to the White Rose Project, where she was one of the original translators of the pamphlets for The White Rose: Reading, Writing, Resistance. She was awarded a prize for German in the Warwick Prize in Undergraduate Translation in 2019 and has gone on to self-publish A String of Pearls: A Collection of Five German Fairy Tales by Women Writers, for which she won the LIDL Year Abroad Project Prize 2019–20. Sophie Caws is a final year student of French and German at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. After taking German as a beginner's language, she now studies modern German literature with Dr Lloyd, with a particular interest in Freudian psychology and the literature of the former GDR. She spent 9 months living in Leipzig, Germany, where she worked as an English Language Assistant with the British Council and a teacher of English as a Second Language. She was also involved in English-language community theatre with English Theatre Leipzig, with the aim of promoting intercultural linguistic and artistic exchange within the Leipzig community and beyond. Sam Thompson is a fourth-year PhD student at King's College London, where he is completing a thesis on Classical Reception in German-language exile literature, 1933-45. Sam previously studied Classics and German at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he also received an MSt in German (with a dissertation on Austrian memory literature). His recent research interests include the work of Bertolt Brecht, Lion Feuchtwanger and Anna Seghers, and Interbellum literature more broadly.

At the heart of our week is a live reading of the White Rose’s resistance pamphlets, translated from German into English by student members of the White Rose Project. This event is supported by The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) and the University of Oxford’s Public Engagement with Research Seed Fund. She is currently a Knowledge Exchange Fellow at TORCH working with the White Rose Foundation in Munich, and is Project Lead on a Public Engagement with Research Seed Fund project, ‘Resistance: The Story of the White Rose’, in collaboration with the award-winning vocal ensemble SANSARA. Eve Mason is a final-year student of English and German at the Queen’s College, Oxford. After taking German as a beginner’s language, she now studies modern German literature with Dr Lloyd, with a particular interest in Freudian psychology and the literature of the former GDR. Sam Thompson is a fourth-year PhD student at King’s College London, where he is completing a thesis on Classical Reception in German-language exile literature, 1933-45.

This is the second of seven conversations with members of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Toronto Chapter. AFP’s Toronto Chapter is recognized as a leader in promoting philanthropy and providing education, training and best practices for those in the profession. I was pleasantly surprised when members of AFP Toronto reached out to inquire how we might collaborate to create some meaningful for their community. After getting our ducks in a row over the last couple of weeks, we are all pleased to see our efforts are coming together. This collaboration has afforded us all some learning opportunities, an opportunity to bring a local community together despite social distancing, a chance to reach across international lines and to create value for fundraising professionals around the globe. It was a pleasure to spend an hour with members Nicole McCahon, Sandra Hawken, Amy McKinnon, and Amy Wilkinson to hear their insights about what it means to be fundraising in these challenging times. I am often surprised by the language that fundraising professionals use to describe their work; and, in the case of this group of Canadian healthcare fundraisers, their words were quite upbeat and encouraging. Even as they described themselves and their colleagues as being exhausted and challenged with the reality of Covid-19, they were also energized, enthusiastic and eager to press on despite the obstacles that they might be encountering. This series will air over the next couple of weeks in addition to our regular broadcasts. As always, we are very grateful to OneCause for being our sponsor.

Ollie the collie is being a pain in the butt.  I was on a trip all week so he didn't get his runs in and he's very stressed out.  He's being the toddler-terror today.  He's already chewed on a couple socks and the channel changer and is harassing me with a toy as I try to write.  That's dog life.  Today, I have a very special and personal conversation with John and Tom, who are both prostate cancer experienced and members of our running circle.  Both of them are friends of mine and I'm honored that they were kind enough to share their stories.  In section one I'll talk about the non-linearity of the mileage curve.  In section two I'll give you a write up of a book I read on the plane this week that I really liked called “Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on it.”  All links, including the one where you donate to my prostate cancer campaign for Boston (wink wink nudge nudge) are in the show notes, which, by the way, you should be able to access on your phone or other listening device, as part of the episode meta-data.  About Zero ZERO — The End of Prostate Cancer is the leading national nonprofit with the mission to end prostate cancer. ZERO advances research, improves the lives of men and families, and inspires action. Link to my ZERO page: (for Donations) Busy couple of weeks.  My training has been going well.  I knocked out a nice 13.8 mile step up run last week and I'm starting to transition into more long tempo as we are getting closer to Patriots Day.  It's been relatively mild this winter but getting a wee bit colder.  My long run last week started at 14 degrees.  I forgot my thick gloves and was worried I might have to knock on someone's door to warm up during that first hour.  It used to be I'd just run harder to warm up but that's not a great strategy for me anymore in a multi-hour run.  My bottle froze and my headphones failed.  But, hey, it was sunny and windless, so it wasn't too bad and I was able to do some thinking and focus on my run.  There is no good or bad run there is only the ‘is'.  I swung by and picked up a couple of my running club buddies for the second loop who I hadn't seen for a while and had a good catch up.  Was able to close out the last 30 minutes at close to race pace.  All in all a solid outing.  Monday morning I was off to Vegas.  I always forget that Vegas is in the Western time zone.  It feels like it should be in Mountain time.  That puts it 3 hours ahead of me, which helps for those morning workouts because you're up anyhow. I knocked out a 30-minute time trial on the treadmill Monday morning.  I showed up at the gym in the casino at 5:00AM when it opened, and it was already ¾ full.  There was a line for the equipment when I stepped off an hour later.  All those East Coasters.  I got a kick out of it though.  I just imagine them thinking “Who's this old guy knocking out 7-minute miles at 5 AM?”  I've turned the corner a bit on worrying about being slower and I'm quite grateful to be getting at it still at all and to be able to do anything a bit quicker makes me happy.  I got out on the strip during the last day before I headed to the airport.  Always fun to get out and take a look around.  It was mid-60'ss and sunny.  Good to see the sun. I always like running up and down the strip.  You can do the whole thing in 6 miles.  You have to run up and down the pedestrian bridges. It's not optimized for running.  It's optimized to get you into a casino.  The air is dry there in the desert but misty with the sadness of self-loathing and empty wallets in the mornings.  But, that's not my story.  On with the show! … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported.  What does that mean? I'm going to continue to be busy here as I ramp up my specificity for the Boston Marathon.  You can go to to contribute to my cause, I'd appreciate it. I'm going to wrap this up so I can get out and take Ollie for a walk before he chews through the walls.  I'm pained to say that he has totally not taken any training. In fact he's reverted. When I say ‘Come' he runs in the other direction.  When I say “Leave it!” he laughs and plays keep away.  Nothing is safe in the house.  Last night he brought me a nickel.  I told him to come back with at least a $20.  If I try to watch TV or sit at all he bites me until I stand up.  After the nickel he stole my wife's hat and chewed the pom-pom off the top.  He's got demons.  I didn't want to go for a walk this morning because it was only 3 degrees out and I wanted to get some writing done.  I was planning to write on the plane but I was too tired and ended up watching the last season of Silicon Valley instead.  That's a funny show.  I don't get HBO at the house and can only get certain shows on planes ironically.   I'm also watching my way through pretty bad scifi series called FarScape on Prime.  Kind of a low-budget Lost in Space meets cosplay.   Now that it's warmed up a bit I'll take Ollie for a walk and get my errands in. One of the speakers this week was an author from Stanford named Amy Wilkinson who writes and speaks about the The Creator's Code: The Six Essential Skills of Extraordinary Entrepreneurs. One of her points was “Small Gifts”.  This resonated with my current practices of gratitude, kindness and empathy. Her point was to make a practice of giving people small gifts to build trust and reciprocity in relationships.  Not physical gifts, although that's ok too, but the unexpected gifts of small kindnesses and thankfulness.  And I'll leave you with that – who today can you make appoint of thanking for something they did to help you see the world differently?  And I'll thank you for letting me think and talk with you on this endurance journey.  I'll see you out there.  (Outro bumper) To continue my music series I give you track #2 from Brian Scheff, the Rock Opera by The Nays.  MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Rachel -> Coach Jeff ->

Hit The Bullseye – NCAA Football Attendance Decline: The NCAA Football National Championship game was a classic as Clemson scored the game winning touchdown with one second remaining to beat top ranked defending champ Alabama. The playoff games were sellouts as are home games for the tradition rich powerhouse programs. But as a whole, attendance for college football games has dropped for seven straight seasons. Some major conference programs like Kansas of the Big 12 have seen their average crowds for home games drop by 50 percent over the past decade. This flies in the face of the perception that major college football is a cash cow for universities. Yes college football in theory creates three revenue streams: media contracts, alumni donations and ticket sales. But beyond those tradition rich few programs, those revenue streams are becoming smaller and smaller.TV revenue is down for mid major and smaller conferences. Ticket sales are down for many universities which results in a direct bottom line hit due to unsold tickets but also indirectly because research indicates that students who don't go to football games are less likely to donate to their alma maters after graduation. How can universities work to change this pattern? Do the Marketing Intel to find out what would entice prospective and current students to attend games. Listen and tweak the product. Find creative ways to engage and interact with students. The intel needs to be done now and universities need to listen, adapt and hit the bullseye.Interview with Bob Haddad (Part 2)We're back with Bob Haddad today to chat more about his prestigious sales career. I ask Bob to dig deeper into his excitement of being a graduate of IUP Eberly College of Business and the impact it has had on his life. He shares with us stories about the successes of his past roommates and how they continue to be close friends. In fact he still practices the teachings of David Thornbury, an old IUP friend, which are written in his book Sales Silver Bullets. When Marc Benioff introduced the Cloud as a new concept to the business world he set up Salesforce to become a leader in the world of leading innovation.  He also set the standard in how to "give back" with his 1-1-1 philosophy which stands for 1% of profits, 1% of time and , 1% of product is donated. Bob speaks on the impact of this and Marc's controversial positions on social issues in his own leadership style. What's the big idea? To start understanding why people do things, get to know them, and treat people well. It's time to think about what it takes to make things better and to be a leader in your community.Secret Weapon: Bob's secret weapon is his phone. He conducts most of his business strictly on his smart phone.About Bob HaddadBob is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Marketing. Interview with Carol Washington (Part 2)On today's episode we are back with Carol Washington, the Chief Operating Officer of Life's Work of Western PA, to dive deeper into her position at her nonprofit, her mission when it comes to the organization, and how she has worked with students and employees as a mentor and leader throughout her career.Carol began her career out of college starting in the business world with Thrift Drug. What was at the time a close knit “mom and pop” atmosphere, Thrift Drug's merger with Eckerd launched Carol into the corporate world and a different experience dealing in Human Resources. It was here that Carol begun to take on the role of a leader for others and help them along a path to success. Carol also discusses with me her experience in working with INROADS Pittsburgh as a recruiter to help students land internships throughout their collegiate career. For many of these students, it was their first foray into business environments, so Carol acted as an advisor and liaison to these students, coaching them on how to behave in business environments. We talk through tips for behaving at corporate events, and the importance of learning proper business etiquette. At its core, Life's Work's mission is to serve those with disabilities. However, the word takes on a broader meaning than anticipated, serving those not only with intellectual or physical disabilities, but also individuals and families that may have fallen on hard times, such as single parenthood or low income. Many who come to Carol's organization have found them through referrals or direct knowledge. It is clear to see Carol's devotion to her employees and the community, and her passion in working for this nonprofit. For those that may be considering a career in nonprofit, be sure to tune in to my discussion with Carol on the show today.About Carol WashingtonCarol Washington the Chief Operating Officer of Life's Work Pittsburgh.Key Takeaways[9:01] Career with Eckerd Drug Job at Thrift Drug was mom and pop shop and non-union First dip into Human Resources and defend for and against unions[11:07] Teaching corporate etiquette 5 Top tips for behaving at corporate events Proper speaking business etiquette[17:16] What to Know about Life's Work Serve persons with disabilities Intellectual, mental health, single parenthood, low income, etc. Some disabilities you see, but most you cannot 90 years ago, when Life's Work founded, women founders were viewed as “disabled” Women would get together and sew and sell garments Appreciative of company's legacy[21:24] Life's Work mission Help persons with disabilities that cannot get work in community work setting Provide work for those in internal facilities Determine their capabilities and place them in appropriate jobs[24:41] Carol's Big Idea Always think about the client Nonprofits can't live without donations OR without boards to demand standards Client resonates in every message[28:49] Tool Carol cannot live without Inspired by those that have lived through struggles – John O'Leary Resources Mentioned:“On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life” – John O'LearyConnect With Carol Washington:LinkedInLearn More About Carol Washington:Life's Work Executive TeamThe No BS Show is brought to you by audible.com. Amy Wilkinson pulls off an extraordinary feat with The Creator's Code: she interviewed 200 top entrepreneurs to discover what had made them successful, then rigorously distilled down her findings into 6 universal skills - the Code.  The research, on 'the biggest data set currently in the entrepreneurship world on high-scale or high-impact entrepreneurs', took 5 years. The 300 pages of the book were distilled down from 10,000 pages of transcripts.  As you'd expect from someone who lectures at Stanford and Harvard, the research was rigorous and the grounded-theory approach behind it is cutting edge. But as you might NOT expect, the output is not an impenetrable scholarly paper, but an engaging, readable narrative.  If you're struggling with translating a large body of material into an accessible story, or if you simply want to find out what's behind the success of 200 top entrepreneurs, all of whom have taken companies from zero to $100m in annual revenue in under a decade, this is an unmissable episode.  Amy also draws out the parallels between starting a business and writing a book that matters, and reminds us that if it's not easy, that's OK:  'It's difficult to be a first timer in any field, really. You talk to people that are first timers in writing books, in starting companies, first-time professors, first-time doctors that are just getting started, first-time lawyers. Everyone is learning and growing, and it takes a lot of energy, and effort, and focus, and it takes some time. The thing about the modern economy is that we are all beginners all the time.' Every entrepreneur possesses the capabilities to spot the right opportunities and turn them into multi-million dollar businesses. But what does it really take to turn a small idea into a high-growth business?  "The entrepreneurs that are out there in the world that are really successful - they're not memorizing or repeating an equation; they're creating the new equations, they're building the new models. It's an impossible thing to do with perfection." - Amy Wilkinson Amy Wilkinson has been a White House Fellow for nearly four years doing international trade and economics before she decided to embark on a 5-year research-filled journey of creating a fool-proof handbook to be a creator. Her journey resulted in 10,000 pages of transcripts from interviewing 200 top creators, including Elon Musk of Tesla, SpaceX, and PayPal.  She asked a series of questions and then came up with a pattern recognition to figure out what skills they have in common. Finding and tracking down the founders to interview was the hardest thing Wilkinson had ever done - harder than being a banker in M&A, which she was. What she learned through her research was that anyone can create and scale an idea. She came up with 6 codes that every single creator that she interviewed already possessed.   "You don't have to be in a certain city at a certain moment in time. You don't have to have that many dollars. You don't have to have a certain degree. These ideas can pop up almost anywhere and across different kinds of pursuits."  Now a professor at the Stanford Graduate School Business, Wilkinson, a graduate herself, passed up many unique and rare opportunities in order to write this book. "At the outset, I believed it would matter, and therefore I pursued it. That's a very common thing for entrepreneurs - regardless of what their pursuit is - you have to believe that it will matter." "One of the really important things that entrepreneurs know and that most people are figuring out now is: there is no right answer in a globally linked and technologically-accelerated world. It's almost impossible to anticipate where an idea is going to go."  LISTEN to get more exclusive insights from Amy Wilkinson on how to be a creator and to discover more details on the 6 essential skills she talks about in her book, The Creator's Code.

We may believe that successful entrepreneurs possess innate abilities that set them apart, but what if those skills are just the result of practice and experience? That is the conclusion of Amy Wilkinson, bestselling author of The Creators Code: The Six Essential Skills of Extraordinary Entrepreneurs. She performed five years of interviews with the founders of organizations such as LinkedIn, eBay, Under Armour, Tesla Motors, Spanx, Airbnb, and PayPal. The result? She learned that these entrepreneurs share six common skills that made them successful. Perhaps more importantly, she contends that these are things that any of us can learn. Wilkinson is a strategic adviser and lecturer at Stanford Business School. Her career spans leadership roles with McKinsey and J.P. Morgan. She has served as a White House fellow, special assistant to the U.S. Trade Representative, and as a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. In this episode, we talk about: How successful entrepreneurs seek not to be first, but rather, to be only Why creators hold the key to a new economy The importance of finding the gap between what is and what can be How we can train ourselves to spot problems and see them as opportunities How Starbucks built its success on the concept of lift and shift Ensuring success by looking forward versus looking back Why you might need to fire yourself in order to innovate How nostalgia holds us back What the OODA Loop can teach us about entrepreneurship Why we all need to build a failure ratio into our work in order to grow The power of networking minds to solve big problems How you can be creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial within your current organization Selected Links to Topics Mentioned @amywilkinson AmyWilkinson.com Elon Musk and Tesla and Zip2 Kevin Plank and Under Armour and the University of Maryland and the Terrapins Howard Schultz and Starbucks Nascar Driving School Chris Guillebeau and Born for This: Find the Work You Were Meant to Do Andy Grove of Intel Gordon Moore of Intel John Boyd and OODA Loop and Paypal Billpoint Palm Pilot Youtube Yelp Digg Founders Fund Clarion Capital Palantir Jessica Herrin and Stella and Dot InnoCentive BP Oil AOL If you enjoy the podcast, please rate and review it on iTunes.
