I was honoured to have this opportunity to talk to the pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico about her extraordinary life in music and the arts. She shared wonderful and moving stories about Ann Southam, Louis Quilico, Pierre Boulez, Jacques Isrealievitch, and her legendary teacher Rosina Lhévinne. I was really struck by Christina's open-minded attitude throughout her long career to learning new music, culminating in almost 70 brilliant and powerful albums so far; it's amazing to learn that most of her recordings are recorded live, in one take. Christina also shared how meaningful it is to her to be a mother and grandmother, as well as respected academic; she's Professor Emerita and Senior Scholar at York University in Toronto. Among many honours, she has been appointed to the Order of Canada, and the Royal Society of Canada. Her curiosity and creative energy seem limitless; she's a poet and visual artist, she's studied Ancient Egyptian culture, and she lives her life spiked with humour and a down-to-earth attitude. Historians are scratching their heads at a resurfaced ancient Egyptian scroll held by the British Museum that might support the claim that biblical giants were, in fact, real. The 3,300-year-old document has been in the museum's collection since 1839 and has recently resurfaced due to a group of researchers who claim that it links to biblical giant accounts. In this episode I will read directly from the segment of this controversial ancient scroll that mentions a mysterious large tribe known as the “Shosu.” I will also provide many other examples of what many believe to be giants of ancient Egypt that were either depicted or written about. Fad workouts have been with us for decades, but they go back much further than we realize. Long before CrossFit, Zumba, P90X, Tae Box, Jazzercise or Jack LaLanne, we had 19th century strongmen. These mustachioed showmen were the first global fitness influencers. They hauled trunks of weights onto steamships, toured the world, then sold exercise equipment through the mail. The most famous was Eugene Sandow, who broke chains, and created with his own body a "manned cavalry bridge" where he would lie down while men, horses, and a carriage were driven over his body. He even fought a lion in front of an auditorium and won, although the lion was almost definitely sedated. Today’s guest is Connor Heffernan, author of “When Fitness Went Global: The Rise of Physical Culture in the Nineteenth Century.” In this episode, we discuss: Ancient Egyptians were basically doing CrossFit thousands of years ago. They trained with swinging sandbags that look exactly like modern kettlebell flows. One of the first exercise practices to experience globalization was Indian club-swinging. Indian club-swinging, originating from the heavy training clubs used by Indian wrestlers and soldiers for centuries, was observed and adopted by British military officers stationed in India during the early 1800s. Early diet culture was a carnival of quack science. Victorian fitness magazines were filled with miracle tonics, starvation cures and pseudoscientific meal plans. He ruled Egypt for six to eleven years in the early 23rd century BC, toward the end of the Old Kingdom period. He was the son of his predecessor Pepi I Meryre and queen Ankhesenpepi I and was in turn succeeded by Pepi II Neferkare who might have been his son or less probably his brother. Pepi I may have shared power with Merenre in a co-regency at the very end of the former's reign.Merenre's rule saw profound changes in the administration of the southern provinces of Egypt, with a marked increase in the number of provincial administrators and a concurrent steep decline in the size of the central administration in the capital Memphis. As a consequence the provincial nobility became responsible for tax collection and resource management, gaining in political independence and economic power. This led to the first provincial burials for the highest officials including viziers, governors of Upper Egypt and nomarchs.Several trading and quarrying expeditions took place under Merenre, in particular to Nubia where caravans numbering hundreds of donkeys were sent to fetch incense, ebony, animal skins, ivory and exotic animals. Such was the interest in the region that Merenre had a canal dug to facilitate the navigation of the first cataract into Nubia. Trade with the Levantine coast for lapis lazuli, silver, bitumen, and tin took place while quarrying for granite, travertine and alabaster took place in the south and in the Eastern Desert.A pyramid complex was built for Merenre in Saqqara, known as Khanefermerenre by the Ancient Egyptians meaning 'the appearance of the perfection of Merenre' and likely completed prior to the king's death. The subterranean chambers were inscribed with the Pyramid Texts. In the burial chamber, the black basalt sarcophagus of the king still held a mummy when it was entered in the 19th century. The identification of the mummy as Merenre's is still uncertain. Following his death, Merenre was the object of a funerary cult until at least the end of the Old Kingdom. The lost labyrinth of Egypt, or the Hawara labyrinth is a buried complex in Egypt. Built beneath the pyramid of Hawara, it is said to have contained mortuary temples, galleries, courtyards, and libraries that hold unseen information about Ancient Egyptian society, as well as other ancient civilizations, including some prior to commonly recorded history. It was described as a labyrinth by the Ancient Greek historian Herodotus, who was one of several Greek historians who saw the inside of the complex. While a labyrinth typically refers to a complicated maze, Herodotus saw the complexity of the structure and saw similarities. It is an apt comparison because the passages in the labyrinth seem to have been constructed to be confusing as a way to deter unwanted visitors and keep the temples safe. It supposedly has over 3,000 rooms, all laden with lost culture.Trevor Grassi is an independent researcher, world traveler, writer and filmmaker who has been studying and searching for the Hall of Records at Giza for nearly two decades. In the past few years he has worked closely with civil engineer and 'Gizatologist', William Brown, at Giza to reveal evidence of underground structures very close to the Sphinx and throughout the plateau. They have shared never-before-seen ground penetrating radar scans, photos, videos, and personal accounts of the subterranean network of tunnels and chambers that are likely connected to the record chambers described by Edgar Cayce.
