Hi Technically Human listeners! Welcome back to another episode of the show. Today I'm sitting down with Alva Noë. We talk about his new book, The Entanglement, and the relationship between technology, philosophy, and art. In The Entanglement, Professor Noë explores the inseparability of life, art, and philosophy, arguing that we have greatly underestimated what this entangled reality means for understanding human nature. Neither biology, cognitive science, nor AI can tell a complete story of us, and we can no more pin ourselves down than we can fix or settle on the meaning of an artwork. Even more, art and philosophy are the means to set ourselves free, at least to some degree, from convention, habit, technology, culture, and even biology. Dr. Alva Noë is a philosopher of mind whose research and teaching focus is perception and consciousness, and the philosophy of art. He is the author of Action in Perception (MIT, 2004); Out of Our Heads: Why You Are Not Your Brain and Other Lessons from the Biology of Consciousness (Farrar Straus and Giroux, 2009); Varieties of Presence (Harvard, 2012); Strange Tools: Art and Human Nature (Farrar Strauss and Giroux, 2015), Infinite Baseball: Notes from a Philosopher at the Ballpark (Oxford, 2019) and, most recently, Learning to Look: Dispatches from the Art World (Oxford 2021). He holds a Bachelor of the Arts degree from Columbia University; a Bachelors of Philosophy. from University of Oxford; and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He teaches in the philosophy department of UC Berkeley.

Art makes people happier. It can not only lift moods, but it's been proven to carry loads of positive health benefits. Internationally recognized artist Catherine Mayer knows the powerful role arts can play in wellness, which has led her to found the L.A.U.G.H app and workshop series. An acronym for Let Art Unleash Great Happiness, the app applies sensory tools and visual arts to help users with relaxation, mindfulness and building self-esteem. Her workshops have been held in schools, nursing homes and the Fred Hutch Cancer Center - using art immersion for measurably positive health effects and improving the learning experience of chronically stressed children. Episode #41: Art & technology have become so closely intertwined in recent years. The rise of immersive art is bringing innovative experiences to broad audiences! FULL TRANSCRIPT HERE BetweenTheSpaces.com Between the Spaces — featuring the work of multimedia artist Jaiye Farrell and photographer Cody Giles — invites the viewer to explore connectivity and art as it pertains to digital versus tactile mediums. Between the Spaces invites the viewer to explore connectivity and art as it pertains to digital versus tactile mediums. Mixing printed portraits with markings painted physically and digitally and then experienced through virtual reality, this project brings those two worlds together. It features 36 printed portraits, 18 of which will be physically embellished, and the other 18 will be virtually painted and viewed using the Artivive app. The artists welcome viewers to move through the gallery interacting with the different elements of the project, including a polaroid corner for participants to have their picture taken and that Polaroid becomes part of the installation, 3D printed painted orbs on display, an augmented reality orb, a video space for participants to create selfie videos, a collaborative canvas to be raffled off as well as canvas pieces of art. The virtually-painted portraits can be purchased and viewed again in their homes with the app, expanding the experience of the project beyond gallery walls. It is also the hope of the artists that the participants feel connected and included enough to be a part of the project. Jaiye Farrell Oklahoma-based artist Jaiye Farrell cultivated his style of painting from abstract patterns that transcend societal and cultural divides and remember the communal roots of humanity. From an infatuation with archeology emerged a creative and ambitious talent: to craft signature designs that inspire self-reflection. “The pattern I am cultivating is a rhythm of line and shape. I use like a substance that morphs so I can transform surfaces objects and spaces around me.” Cody Giles Driven by connection, community, and alliteration, Cody Giles is a photographer who always sets out to capture the personality of a subject. Not just another portrait, but rather one that conveys just who that person is without knowing them. He strives to do this in all types of photography, from live music to families, to fashion editorials. Capturing moments in thoughtful and artful ways is always the goal. In this week's first segment (02:48 to 15:52), hosts Brent Butterworth and Dennis Burger share their varied opinions on “MoFi-gate,” the biggest scandal in the analog audiophile world right now. It turns out that Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab—long lauded for their all-analog production process—actually creates their lacquer masters from 4X DSD files these days, not directly from the master tapes. Will this be the end of this revered audiophile company? Is the outrage justified? Brent and Dennis have thoughts. Next up (16:24 to 28:15), they dig back through the Stereophile archives to discuss a review of the Monitor Audio Studio 20 loudspeaker written by Robert Harley in 1991, complete with measurements by John Atkinson. Monitor Audio is a brand beloved by Brent and Dennis alike, so this throwback review gives them both the opportunity to reflect on just how much has changed in the world of loudspeaker design in the past 30 years. Finally (28:50 to 39:20), they dig into James Hale's latest “Art+Tech” column on SoundStage! Experience, in which he explores the music of Charles Lloyd through a pair of different iFi Audio DACs, including the same Zen One Signature, which Dennis recently fell in love with and added to his reference stereo system. Somehow or another, though, this leads right back to a discussion about vinyl. Ed speaks with Jessica Santiago, CEO and curator at ArtRepublic Global about how the marriage of art and technology created the NFT markets we know today.
Just by reading the news, the metaverse seems like a storm of experiential, edgy, immersive technology poised at the juncture of art, entertainment, social media, and crypto currency. With that, we are told the metaverse has the potential to revolutionize the art world. Storage, location, display, transparency, authenticity and accessibility are the stumbling blocks to experiencing or owning fine art – Yet the metaverse theoretically provides a platform for creators, commentators, critics, galleries and collectors to transcend all of these issues. Is the metaverse really turning the art world upside down? How much of this remains a mirage, and how much of it is already a structured, working, money-making ecosystem? How critical is financial technology in powering this new art market? Our guest today is Anne Bracegirdle, vice president of Business Development at Metaversal, and based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Her expertise focuses on the intersection between the art world and technology. As noted on Metaversal's website, Ms. Bracegirdle “has been preaching about non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the art world since before it was cool.” Prior to joining Metaversal, she spent nearly a decade at Christie's, with her last role being associate vice president in charge of the Art+Tech initiative, before turning to art tech first by joining Superblue as its senior director for Special Projects, and then co-founding the Art & Antiquities Blockchain, a consortium of women from diverse professional backgrounds providing unparalleled expertise in cultural heritage issues.Brand & New is a production of the International Trademark AssociationHosted by Audrey Dauvet - Contribution of M. Hvilke forbindelser og relationer har vi skabt i mødet mellem det digitale og det analoge?

Here's Gerald, Jason, and Marc's key takeaways from the Alexia and Karabo's interview about Capital Art and Artech. You can find the full episode here or on your favorite podcast player.
We can argue that without technology there's no art. We need to learn how to paint to become a painter and paper to become a writer (although most writers write on a computer nowadays, but this is another story). However, there's nothing further away from computer technology than art, you might think.Well, beyond the famous legaltech, edutech, fintech and the likes, we now find artech, and no, it's not (yet) another NFT discussion, although it might in the future. In this episode, we welcome Alexia Walker and Karabo Morule, co-founders of Capital Art, a venture to help private and corporate art collectors to manage and better grow the value of their art collections. With a clear focus on African art, Capital art is a different kind of startups. However, not only, you'll learn more about African art, you'll discover that a startup is a startup and our founders have made incredible discoveries on their journey, that do not fundamentally differ from any other companies. Enjoy this new episode of Entrepreneurs Talk Africa.

In this special second episode in our series on next-gen innovators, Charlie chats with Anya Berlova. Anya Berlova is a student at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder and an entrepreneur who launched her social cause startup in her freshman year of college. Her startup focuses on combatting bullying in a creative and technology-driven way. To support the development of the technology and to further raise awareness for the mission, she launched a fashion label, Anya Berlova Designs. Anya started her brand because she had a mission: to combat bullying and encourage people to show their uniqueness and unique selves. She believes that one of the keys to a bullying-free society is for every person to build confidence around their individuality and not succumb to any fear surrounding the expression of who they are. She hopes to inspire YOU to #ShowYourUnique! Charlie and Anya discuss: her passion for innovation and what drove her to launch a social cause startup on anti-bullying; how the pandemic has changed school life and what the long-term impact will likely be to higher education; why she sees a silver "digital" lining in the pandemic; why communication and data privacy is of particular interest to her when thinking about the post-pandemic future CONNECT WITH ANYA: Website: https://anyaberlova.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anya-berlova/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/anyaberlovaofficial/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/anyaberlovaofficial/ YouTube: https://bit.ly/3a64JLK REACH OUT TO THE SHOW: Website: https://tech2025.com/fast-forward-podcast/ Twitter: @fastforward2025 Instagram: @fastforward2025 Facebook: https://bit.ly/fastforwardfacebook Email: fastforward@tech2025.com Charlie on Twitter: @itscomplicatedCharlie on Instagram: @charlieoliverbk Charlie on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/charlieoliverny

At the Peninsula hotel in Los Angeles, Art in America hosted a brunch for the highlighting the magazine's January Issue on Artificial Intelligence and Generative art. Artist, scholar, and collector Anne Spalter joined A.i.A. editor William S. Smith and tech entrepreneur Laura Lehmann for a conversation about the history and future of computer art. Spalter, author of the influential history The Computer in the Visual Arts (1999), described how her research into a field within art history that was neglected at the time led to her interest in collecting. She and her spouse, Michael Spalter, have built a significant collection that includes work created between the 1950s and 1980s by pioneering figures such as Vera Molnár, Georg Nees, and Koji Fujino. Though many of the compositions were produced by algorithms, the designs were fabricated with plotter printers on paper. The Spalters’ collection of computer art features many pieces in traditional mediums. Lehmann articulated an expanded view of collecting, noting that the meaning of collecting and curating is changing as those activities become widespread on social media. A new generation accustomed to managing collections of digital imagery on a daily basis could very well transform fundamental values in art and assumptions about its singularity.

Beetl Robotics wants to provide best-in-class robots using its expertise in cloud networking, computer vision and mechanical design. So naturally, they turned to poop scooping. According to Beetl, more than 35 million households in the US have dogs and backyards. The team designed a robot that uses computer vision and advanced sensor fusion to clean up after them. And if it works, we'll that's one hell of a market. The Beetl seems to work similar to a Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner. It deploys from a base and patrols a virtual map of the yard. Beetl finds the mess, deploys a clamshell jaw to clasp it, and then a trimmer to cut any grass that's coming along for the ride or otherwise stuck. It also uses cloud-based AI to adapt and learn from each scoop, because no two scoops are ever going to be the same. I don't know, I still say that if you can't clean up after it, you shouldn't have the dog, but maybe I’ve finally aged into common sense.
Austin Slominski talks to Jay Bruns, from the experimental art/tech space in Missoula, Wave & Circuit, about enabling and supporting creativity, finding and loving HTF gear and instruments and then passing them on, the importance of creating for the sake of creating. North Idaho is weird...Peavey is great...building stone monuments in the woods sounds like a fun idea...
Aaron Huey is a National Geographic photographer who has contributed dozens of cover and feature stories to the magazine. His photography details a wide range of stories from Sherpas on Everest, to life on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and most recently, Aaron detailed the fight to preserve America's national monuments like Bears Ears. Aaron is also the founder of Amplifier, a design lab that builds art to amplify the voices of grassroots movements.. He was the design director for their art project “We The People” that flooded the streets of Donald Trump's Inauguration and the women's march of 2017, and has become one of the world's most iconic artistic movements. In this conversation, Aaron and I discuss how his background as an artist influences his photography, how he is breaking out of the conventional forms of photojournalism to tell more nuanced and powerful stories, and how he stepped across the journalism and activism divide, and helped create one of the most viral artistic movements in history.

There's also time for a roundup of tech news from F1, Audi, Samsung, science and the toilet industry.

It’s no secret that we continue to live in the midst of digital revolution that continues to unfold in a rapidly accelerating fashion. Digital connectivity and the Internet of Things make possible not only Smart Homes, but Smart Cities. As with all technological revolutions, the road ahead is equally dotted with possibilities and pitfalls. Liss C. Werner and her colleagues brought together a collection of thinkers and practitioners in the realms of architecture, design, and urban planning to wrestle with questions around ways we might utilize today’s digital design tools to enable more responsive, resilient, and ultimately, inclusive and democratic forms of urban design and governance without tipping the balance over to a technocratic project that might imprison us within its algorithmic logics. All of the contributors to this discussion share the hope that the insights of second-order cybernetics might provide valuable guidance as we attempt to find that particular “sweet-spot” of human/machine interaction. Their insights are gathered together in Cybernetics: State of the Art edited by our guest, Liss C. Werner, and available free online from the Technical University of Berlin. As editor, Werner has skillfully crafted a dialectic arc that allows the productive tensions between digital utopianism and skepticism enabling a provocative investigation of the revolution that is happening whether we like it or not, and might help us find the means to steer its emergence in ways that are most beneficial for all of us and our environment.
