A 60-year-old former Virginia police officer has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murders of his wife and stepdaughter. On Friday, Henrico County Circuit Court Judge sentenced Richard C. Crowder to 100 years in prison for the 2022 killings of 53-year-old Diane Crowder and 35-year-old Carrie Szaksz . Crowder had pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder earlier this year. The judge handed Crowder 50-year sentences for each murder, to be served consecutively. Additionally, Crowder received another 50 years for two counts of attempted aggravated murder of law enforcement officers, making his total sentence 150 years. These additional charges stem from an hours-long standoff during which Crowder fired at his former colleagues who responded to the scene. The incident occurred in July 2022 when Diane Crowder was moving out of the home she shared with Richard Crowder, located about 11 miles southeast of Richmond, Virginia. As Diane and her daughter Carrie were outside, supervising the move, Richard Crowder arrived armed with a handgun and opened fire, killing both women. Henrico County Commonwealth Attorney Shannon Taylor detailed the harrowing events, explaining that Diane Crowder had been in the process of leaving her husband and had hired movers to assist. The situation escalated when Richard Crowder, described as drunk and agitated by the movers, began shooting. During the sentencing, the presiding judge remarked that Crowder's actions represented a profound betrayal of his oaths as a former police officer, emphasizing the gravity of the case. The judge's words echoed the sentiment of many, noting that this case was unforgettable due to its sheer brutality. Witnesses from the moving company described a tense atmosphere before the shooting. They reported hearing screaming, yelling, and gunshots, prompting them to escape by leaping from a second-story window. One mover sustained injuries during the escape. Crowder then barricaded himself inside the home, leading to a nine-hour standoff with police, during which he fired multiple shots at responding officers. In this Hope With Answers episode, host Diane Mulligan interviews Dr. Tejas Patil, an oncologist specializing in lung cancer, about ROS1-positive lung cancer. As Dr. Patil explains, "ROS1 is a type of mutation that we see in patients who have lung cancer. It's one of many but it's an important one because there is targeted treatments available to these patients that really are not like chemotherapy." A ROS1-positive lung cancer, also known as a ROS1 rearrangement in lung cancer, refers to any lung cancer that tests positive for a fusion in the ROS1 gene. ROS1 rearrangements occur in approximately 1-2% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. ROS1-positive lung cancer tends to be aggressive and can spread to the brain and the bones. The hosts also speak with Lysa Buonanno, a 12-year lung cancer survivor and patient advocate living with ROS1-positive lung cancer. Lysa stresses the importance of self-advocacy.  "You have to keep advocating for yourself. Throughout this entire process I think that is so critically important."  She describes her excitement at being able to join a clinical trial for a new targeted therapy when her cancer progressed. Overall, the episode provides critical information about this rare form of lung cancer, highlights new research and treatments, and offers inspiration through Lysa's story. Rethinking our physical therapy approach (Redux)This was an inspiring conversation. We covered so much ground and this just reflects the expertise of our guests today. Diane has been such a driving force for evidence based interventions. Her work has significantly influenced global practices and her passion was so tangible throughout this conversation. Ginny's perspective is incredibly refreshing and honest. I love how she seeks out interventions when they look promising but “when it doesn't pan out”, she has the ability to move on. There is so much to take away from this episode! The main theme that runs through the conversation is essentially the importance of evidence based practice. It is our professional duty to keep up with the evidence and provide the best level of care. Diane reminds us that there is an urgency in rehab because we have children before us that have developing muscles and brains that need the right input. Science doesn't compete and this compels us to provide green light interventions because there are so many options now! The question is - why are non-evidence based interventions still available? We explored this topic and the persistence of therapists in continuing to provide red light interventions or interventions that use red light intervention principles. For sure, the time, money and personal investment therapists put into their profession are factors that can limit the ability to change their practice. We are a medical profession and with that, comes a responsibility to follow the science. We are a great source of information for the families that need our services and they would hope that we are up to date with the latest and the best. We have evidence now, and this is different from 50 years ago or even 20 years ago. We can't simply be doing whatever we want anymore because unlike decades ago when there wasn't anything guiding us, we now have the evidence. Therefore, we can no longer say there isn't enough evidence or that we are waiting for more evidence to come. We can start now. The more I work in this industry and the more I speak with researchers and leading therapists, I too want our profession to grow in effectiveness, influence and impact. The advertising we see online with therapists using moving surfaces and manoeuvres that attempt to integrate reflexes (of which there is no evidence for despite what is said in the advertising) under the banner of manual facilitation techniques, are all part of the red light intervention family. Even when the approach is rebranded from 50 years ago, there is still no grounding or evidence to support its thought processes. This contrasts so significantly with the green light interventions which are all based on decades of knowledge on motor learning principles. The difference here with the red light interventions is that these principles have been repeatedly proven, time and time again. The science is very clear on this. There is no argument to the contrary so again, why are we still providing red light interventions when we have so many options in the green light family? I have come to learn that following the science isn't personal. Saying that an intervention has red light features isn't personal. Critically evaluating our practices isn't personal but our professional responsibility. What we provide in our care, as health professionals shouldn't be personal and based on personal preferences. As a medical profession, if that is what we want it to be, we need a concerted effort by all to ensure that it remains that way. As Diane said, we're not done yet and we are continually trying to push the boundaries and find better interventions. To be ready for that though, we need to catch up and not be left in thought processes of 50 years ago. Let's do this together!

Since the death of her son Joe in 2010, Diane Restaino of Charlotte has been working toward his dying wish that she raise money to advance research and treatment of pediatric cancer. Over the course of 13 years, Diane grew the Joedance Film Festival into a well-known nonprofit that raised more than $400,000 for Atrium Levine Children's Hospital's cancer program. Diane Rosenfeld I read a lot of books, most of the people I interview on this podcast are authors, so I'm pretty used to finding interesting aspects to various subjects. But when I started reading this book I was riveted! I couldn't wait to talk with Diane about what we humans, particularly females, could learn from Bonobo apes.  That apes had figured out how to eliminate male sexual coercion and violence while this is still a huge problem for a, supposedly, more evolved species fascinated me. By the time I finished reading the book I had pages of questions for Diane. When we finally got to speak I was not disappointed. There is a way to address the crisis of violence against women and women hold the key. This is something that we can do. We just have to choose to. As Diane describes it, it's a pivot. A different way of engaging, with other women both individually and collectively. Then, that different engagement changes the way that males and females engage. From a culture of sexual coercion and violence to a culture where that behavior is not tolerated and does not occur. Listen to this conversation and then think about how you can create your own Bonobo Sisterhood and what an enormous shift that would create in the world. The opportunity is right there for us. We just have to take it.  About Diane:  Diane L. Rosenfeld is an attorney, a lecturer in law and the founding director of the Gender Violence Program at Harvard Law School, where she has taught since 2004. Diane's Action Items: The first thing is what we talked about to stop judging yourself. Just start with yourself, stop judging yourself. And really take the book as an invitation to to be in an intimate space with yourself and the ideas in the book and see what resonates and what you feel, if anything, that you want to change and how you want to change it. The first thing is really to stop judging harshly yourself, and to open space for your sisters. To really believe in the bonobo principle and that you have a self worth defending. Learn self defense learn, self defense that's inspired by the bonobo sisterhood. You could even start by going on YouTube and watching a 15 minute video, a lot of self defense is, is being ready to verbally shut down any aggression that's aimed toward you. But learn self defense. And then once you learn self defense, the third thing is that that enables you to imagine defending your sisters. And it pisses you off. And you learn from the outside in and from the inside out that you have a self worth defending. And then you really want to do it. And you really want to defend your sisters. So it's a physical embodiment of the ideas. And that's what will change, because that's what will stop male sexual coercion. This week's episode is an especially poignant episode as I speak to a very brave and special lady about the reality of navigating death in life. Diane reached out to me as she has been listening to the podcast to give her the reassurance that after her own death, her husband, son and loved ones will be able to carve out a new and happy life for themselves. Diane is living with metastatic ovarian cancer and wanted to come and talk about the reality of living with cancer from her own lived experience, as the patient, and the grief and loss she is experiencing and what she wishes for her loved ones when her time comes. Diane openly shares how her work as a palliative care clinical nurse specialist, has helped her face her own diagnosis, and be able to talk about the things a lot of us would find very overwhelming and distressing. That's not to say it's easy for Diane, far from it, but it provides a coping strategy allowing Diane to talk about it in a professional capacity stepping back, for moments in time, from the reality she is talking about herself. However, in this podcast Diane shares a lot of her own grief within her diagnosis, how she feels about death and dying, and the reality of saying goodbye to those she loves dearly. We discuss; The different ways people grieve, Anticipatory grief, Guilt, New relationships in widowhood, The importance of communication, Hopelessness and depression, Existential crisis, The healing power of nature, living with uncertainty, What death looks like, And wishes for her loved ones in life after loss. I have to say, this is one of the most powerful conversations i've had, and one of the bravest. Diane is incredible, her wisdom, kindness and openness offers so much to so many and I feel honoured to have been able to share this time with her. This week's episode is all about embracing and being empowered by the ‘f**k you moments' in our lives as I am joined by Hollywood goddess, Diane Kruger! Diane has became one of our most respected actresses since breaking out as Helen of Troy in Troy (alongside Brad Pitt's stunning bob), before going on to star in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, and later winning the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for In The Fade, where she played a woman widowed following a terrorist attack. Now Diane returns with the high-kicking all-female spy thriller, The 355, alongside Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz and Lupita Nyongo. The movie sees five international spies come together to save the world from a mysterious cyber threat. Think of it as James Bond meets The Spice Girls - it's right up our street! But for all the success on screen there have been moments of deep disappointment for Diane. After training at the Royal Ballet School, Diane had to shelve her ballet career as a teenager following a knee injury. And even when she finally hit the big time in Troy, the role left her pigeon-holed and out of work. As Diane reveals in this episode, even winning her role in Inglourious Basterds came after Quentin Tarantino refused to audition her - becoming one of the greatest ‘f**k you moments' of her life. But sometimes other people doubting us can be the greatest fuel for empowering ourselves - am I right? Also in this episode Diane talks about how training for The 355 six months after giving birth affected her body image and how heartbreak and grief in her mid-30's led to her being more open and honest about her mental health. It is not hyperbole to say that nonprofits are essential to becoming a just democracy. The best nonprofits produce unimpeachable data and mobilize across sectors and geography to advocate for federal legislation informed by the lived experience of their members. This role has taken on greater urgency in the face of a global pandemic that has disproportionately impacted the physical and economic well-being of low-income households, exacerbating our national eviction and homelessness crisis. Diane Yentel, CEO of National Low Income Housing Coalition, exemplifies how intentionality makes transformational change possible. As Diane says, NLIHC is laser-focused on expanding housing resources for lowest income Americans, no matter who is in the White House or Congress. The story of how NLIHC was able to get $25 billion in Emergency Rental Assistance into the 2020 stimulus package, an extension of the eviction moratorium passed and build the internal infrastructure needed to ensure that these funds were deployed to states and municipalities is beyond impressive. And now there is the imperative to achieve an historic investment in housing through the Build Back Better Act. NLIHC is our path to democracy.

Pearly Queen Diane Gould follows in the rich tradition of Pearly royalty. Born in North London into a family of Costermongers (street market traders) her Father Alf Dole was grandson of the very first Pearly King of St Pancras, having put on his first suit as the Pearly Prince aged 7. As Diane says, The Costermongers worked hard and played hard, always ready for a sing song and knees up in the local battle cruiser (boozer). The Costermongers were a resilient bunch with a Stoic outlook on life. If you fall on hard times- well, you just pick yourself up and get on with it. And boy did they have hard times going back three and four generations, but they were often carefree happy times too. Playing out in the streets of London, spending long hot summers hopping down in Kent. Underpinning much of what the Pearlies have always been about is charity, and today Diane and her fellow Pearlies , share their rich history through education programmes, community projects, social engagement and of course fund raising for wonderful causes including the world renowned, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Rippledown Environmental Education Centre, giving kids from Inner London a rare chance to engage with the natural word. The tradition of Pearly Kings and Queens started in 19th Century Victorian London, and their reason d’etre of spreading good will and cockney spirit is as important today as ever. In each of London’s 28 boroughs a Coster King and Coster Queen was decided to watch over the corresponding street market. They looked after the interests of the markets and interact with them, and the Coster Queens and Kings would talk and entertain and listen to keep them coming back to their market—and if one of the Coster traders went on hard times they would go to their Coster King or Queen for help—thus starting the tradition and heritage of charity among the Pearlies. So how did Pearlies come about? Diane’s Great Grandad—as legend has it—appeared in a top hat in dress suit completely covered in peals and wanted to go out and help the poor people at markets, as Costermongers weren’t exactly sharp dressed. The pearls are said to have been found in the Thames and her Great Grandad went about fashioning them to his suit. “We’re connected through story, aren’t we? We’re connected through story—in many ways. Diane Hoskins is the co-CEO at Gensler, the largest global design and architecture firm with over 6,000 professionals across 50 offices. You may have seen some of the structures they have worked on, including the Shanghai Tower, the Facebook Headquarters in Menlo Park, the Microsoft headquarters in Ireland, the Ford Foundation Center in New York, and countless others all over the world. It’s no longer just a space where we go from 9 to 5, because of the integration of work and life that is happening. As Diane shares the workspace is what allows people to connect, collaborate, share, innovate, and make a difference. A workspace should reflect the culture, the mission, and the purpose of the organization. This is a major shift that is taking place in workspace design. The old debate between open and closed spaces in the workplace is quickly becoming something of the past. It is becoming more apparent that it is a diverse work environment that is what makes the most sense. It’s important to have a mixture of open spaces that encourage collaboration and interactions as well as some closed spaces for phone calls, meetings, and individual work. Gensler is utilizing a lot of new technologies to help design workspaces that make sense for the needs of their individual clients. The ability to use data sensors, wearables, and algorithms in the design process is something that couldn’t have been done years ago and it is impacting the future of workspace design. So with all of these updates and changes, how do you keep your workplace relevant for years to come? Diane says, “There used to be a lot more specific design around the process, almost this idea of taking apart the process and then overlaying that on the floor plan and designing each department in its own way, and really looking at the actual work activity. And with the rate of change of what people do, and how companies are transforming, to your point, you basically can design something that will be obsolete you in a year, six months, or two years. And so the the understanding of what work is and how people work, is less about the process, which is probably a little bit more of a factory mindset, and more about, as we were talking earlier, it's about really supporting individual work, group work, and the organization itself. Acronyms are F’d Up Pt. 1RecapWritten by Brandi AbbottIn 1992, George Goode was at his home with his brother Chris and friend Eugene DeCastro. The landlord, Leon Batton, came by for rent and a verbal fight broke out outside between Chris, Eugene, and Leon. George was still in his trailer. The argument escalated really quickly - to the point that Chris and Eugene attacked Leon physically and ultimately stabbed him to death. Leon’s wife, Margaret, got a call that someone was attacking her husband and she rushed over – Chris and Eugene turned their attention to her and inexplicably killed this poor woman as well. George who had remained inside for the entire altercation was in shock and terrified but Chris and Eugene snapped him out of it and all three men fled. For whatever reason, Chris handed Leon’s wallet to George at some point - so evidently they had robbed him as well. George was arrested very quickly, shortly followed by his brother, and Eugene the next day. As they had no time to pop home and take a shower or anything, Chris and Eugene were still covered in blood when they were picked up. George had absolutely no blood on him; and the SBI Crime Lab at the time even verified this, but a knife was found near where he was arrested and he had Leon’s wallet and somehow he was charged with murder. George’s trial began in 1993 when Duane Deaver was a young up and comer, and he testified at the trial that there was “invisible blood” on George’s boots. No one asked if this was his initial test or confirmatory test, because at that time, no one knew to ask. No one asked about the coveralls George was wearing which had been tested by a different analyst and received negative results because the defense didn’t have access to the files. George and Eugene were sentenced to the death penalty, whereas Chris received life in prison, but as he was actually covered in blood, we aren’t sure why he received a lighter sentence. Diane Savage, who has been mentioned a few times so far in the podcast, was born and raised in New York and a bit of a troublemaker. She was kicked out of her family home at a very young age, but she was scrappy and got a job in a lab to provide for herself. After a few years of working there, the lab workers decided to unionize and she helped them. She also helped with community organizing. Stuff like this was what she really enjoyed and wanted to continue helping others. She decided law school was the way to go, and got in to Georgetown. During her time in Washington D.C., she met her now husband who received a job opportunity in North Carolina, so they relocated. When she first arrived in NC, she was told by a local that she had “three marks against her”. 1. That she was a Yankee, 2. That she went to a fancy school and, 3. That she was a woman.  Diane’s first case as an attorney in North Carolina was George’s appeal. As we learned in the last episode, if you’re sentenced to death row, you’re appointed two defense attorneys. He got Diane and Lisa Williams. As Diane was reading through the case file, she noticed that there wasn’t a record of confirmatory tests. She had hired forensic expert, Marilyn Miller, and also had her lab background – and both women found the lack of secondary tests concerning. Note: This case was Marilyn’s first experience with Deaver and his shitty science. Phenolphthalein was the presumptive test that was used to confirm the alleged blood on George’s clothes. At the trial Diane questioned Deaver about his confirmatory tests, which were standard operating procedure in the SBI lab (even if reporting them was not), and Deaver claimed he didn’t do one. As evidenced throughout the podcast and in the Audit report, he always did a confirmatory test - so this was weird. The judge in this case didn’t like that Diane Savage was “living up to her last name”, according to Priya, and the DA didn’t like the way she was treating Deaver. According to Diane, Judge Jenkins told her that she engaged in character assassination and maligned elected public officials. He also told her that if she were correct about Duane Deaver, a grand jury should be convened and people prosecuted for perjury. Diane said that the judge struck the pleading over what she said about Deaver and she would have to start over again. He also took what’s called judicial notice to basically declare as “fact” that Duane Deaver was great.  To further prove his point, he reported Diane to the state bar for discipline. She was investigated and removed from her cases.Thankfully, she was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing. Priya pointed out that this was in 1997 and if people had listened to Diane then, they may have been able to shave 13 years off of a lot of people’s sentences and maybe even saved some lives (see: Death Row is F’d Up). ASCLD LAB was the only agency that had accredited the SBI Crime Lab as of 2010, and as the News and Observer stated, had missed all of the problems. They should have been aware of all of the mess the SBI had been concocting and should have stopped it. ASCLD LAB stands for The American Society of Crime Lab Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board, is not to be confused with ASCLD which is just the American Society of Crime Lab Directors. Confused yet? I sure am. As F’d Up has discussed, the NCSBI Crime Lab is closely intertwined with prosecutors and ASCLD LAB is much the same. ASCLD LAB HQ was located in Johnston County, NC - which was in close proximity to the executive director’s home.  In 2016, ASCLD LAB joined forces with an organization named ANAB, which stands for ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board. The hidden acronym in that one stands for American National Standards Institute- American Society for Quality. If your acronym is so long, it needs its own acronym, you have a problem. After the merger, ASCLD LABS and ANAB became just ANAB. When ASCLD was formed in 1974, their early goals were to address a quality control for labs and their practices, and it was decided that accreditation was the way to go. As ASCLD was not an accrediting body, ASCLD LABS was formed in 1982. Labs accredited by ASCLD LAB must be up to their standards and willing to be re-inspected on site every five years. The process for accreditation includes a tech or supervisor selecting at least five cases for review, which basically means the lab can pick whichever cases they want to be reviewed - and would obviously select their best cases. If a lab is found to be non-compliant, they have the opportunity to correct the issue. At some point after the audit, Chris Swecker told the News and Observer that it was thought that ASCLD LAB was infallible and it was surprising to him that they hadn’t gotten a better sense of what was going on in the SBI Crime Lab for all of those years. It was surprising to only him however, as the labs always knew that ASCLD LAB was coming for a review and were allowed to cherry-pick cases. According to a few articles, the SBI has repeatedly had to fix policies or correct cases in order to pass, but they always did pass and remain in good standing with ASCLD LAB. ASCLD LAB is quoted as saying that they often bend over backwards to help labs pass because they want them to pass. A defense lawyer Priya spoke with, who is part of the New York State Commission of Forensic Science, named Marvin Schechter wrote in a memo in 2011 that ASCLD LAB could more accurately be described as a product service organization that sells a seal of approval for a fee. This is something labs can use to bolster their credibility.Marvin Schechter was in his office in New York when he got a call from a friend in D.C. that a commission was being formed to identify needs from forensic science. They wanted a well-rounded committee of lawyers, scientists, and judges with different perspectives of the needs of forensic science. They were missing a defensive attorney and Marvin’s friend recommended him. With this commission, he coauthored the National Academy of Science’s 2009 report titled “Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward”. This report was a 350-page look at forensic science that identified the needs of the forensic science world and made recommendations to the forensic science community. One thing that the report didn’t look at was accrediting entities for forensic labs in the countries. People like Marvin began getting concerned about these entities, such as ASCLD LABS, because they seemed to have no concern about the blatant wrongdoing in the labs. He wrote a memo to the New York State Commission in March of 2011 that was a detailed analysis about ASCLD LAB and forensic laboratory accreditation which is what inspired Priya to reach out to him for F’d Up. What she learned from speaking to him was that around the same time as the audit and everything going on in NC after Greg Taylor’s exoneration, the SFPDCL (San Francisco Police Department Crime Lab) were garnering attention. A tech in the drug testing area had been stealing cocaine from the lab for personal use, and in May of 2010, the drug testing section was shut down. A whistleblower sent a letter in 2008 to a public defender and a letter in 2009 to ASCLD LAB revealing that there had been a DNA test tube mess-up by a tech that was covered up by a supervisor. In July of 2009, ASCLD LAB sent a letter to that supervisor who denied knowing anything about it. After investigating, verifying that there was a mixup, and finding out the files had been destroyed in an attempted cover-up, ASCLD LAB accredited that lab for another five years. In 2009, the NYSIG (New York State Inspector General), issued a report that mentioned the SDPDCL and its issues. It also mentioned a tech in the NYSPFIC (New York State Police Forensic Investigation Center) had fabricated fiber analysis evidence which occurred while the lab was being accredited by ASCLD LAB. A guy named Jay Jarvis who was on the ASCLD LAB board of directors, referred to this report in an article he had written, meaning they were aware of these issues. The gist of the excuses thrown around over these fuckups is that it’s “one guy in one lab”, but it’s not. There’s a pattern of, at minimum, gross negligence and at most, intentional lying. Duane Deaver is usually named in relation to the disaster that is the SBI Crime Lab and their audit, but as we’ve learned, he wasn’t the only one fucking up, just the one most often blamed. As you may remember, the NAS report in 2009 recommended that lab employees have a science background in biology or chemistry. And… Peter Duane Deaver graduated from North Carolina University with a degree in zoology in 1984. On December 1st, 1985, Deaver was hired by the SBI to work in the serology section of the SBI Crime Lab. Deaver attended the SBI Academy in March of 1986 and worked his first serology case in 1988. At that time a man named Mark Nelson was in charged of the serology department. In 2010, Deaver was involved with 50 of the 230 cases in the audit. When the audit was released, he was suspended with pay and advised that he was the subject of an administrative investigation. In January 2011, he was officially fired. One reason behind this was that he was asked to look over some evidence during his suspension in October of 2010 which was sanctioned by the SBI, but in late October, without permission, he assisted a criminal profiler with writing a complaint related to the case. He asked for his name to be taken off of this complaint as he wasn’t suppose to be working on it while on leave, but removing his name wasn’t legal.Another reason was on September 3rd of 2009, Deaver told the IIC that there was no further testing in Greg Taylor’s case, but there had been. The last reason was his unprofessionalism in saying “that’s a wrap baby” at the end of the video where Gerald Thomas was trying to “shore up” evidence in Kirk Turner’s case. About a month after being fired, he met with SBI Director McLeod in an attempt to get his job back but was denied. He appealed his firing and the case went before the State Human Resources Committee. He claimed that he didn’t perjure himself at trial because he rushed through the file quickly in the car right before the hearing. He defended his performance in the video by claiming he didn’t know the sound would be on in the video. He presented the video he did with Suzi Barker in the Peterson case where she jumps up and down and pointed out that she was only reprimanded, whereas he was he fired. Essentially, everything Deaver had done was being done by everyone in the SBI Crime Lab. His lawyer brought up the fact that Deaver was the scapegoat for the SBI. Getting rid of him was a way to put the public’s mind at ease. The State Human Resources Commission came to the conclusion that the lesser disciplinary action of being demoted with a reduction in his salary would have been appropriate for Deaver. They noted, however, that on July 16th, 2013 Deaver was found to have presented false or misleading evidence for the Michael Peterson case and that would have been grounds for firing. Deaver was unfired in November of 2014 and reinstated into his previous position with two years of backpay and “all of the other benefits of continuous state employment”. He was fired again the same day he was unfired with a backdate of July 16th, 2013 which was the day his misconduct in the Michael Peterson case came to light.Meanwhile, Suzi Barker is still employed with the SBI and Gerald Thomas has climbed the ladder to almost the top of the SBI. Essentially, as F’d Up has been saying this whole time, Duane Deaver isn’t the only problem, there are problems in labs all across America. Next week’s episode will delve more into those, more acronyms, the rest of George Goode’s case, and some tinfoil hat theories about Duane Deaver.

It partners with community based nonprofits, the faith community and veteran's groups to advocate for solutions, from ballot initiatives to state-based legislation. And it advocates on a national level for the embattled Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a champion of consumer rights. Diane remains a relentless and positive force for a fair financial marketplace. I'm on a cider kick! Just talked with the Potter's Craft boys and this week it's Diane Flynt of Foggy Ridge Cider. Cider is the fastest growing segment of the alcohol business, growing at a rate of over 100% a year. But it still only makes up 3% of the entire industry. How do we increase this number? As Diane says, "The ingredients in the glass are important." In other words, if you're using shabby apples, you're going to get shabby cider. Which is why Foggy Ridge uses only heritage cider apples it grows on its property, including English cider varieties Tremlett's Bitter and Dabinett. Proudly purist, Foggy Ridge uses no flavorings just the pure essence of blended heirloom apples. In her mind it's the difference between a fine wine and a flavored wine cooler. Just taste her Serious Cider or First Fruit and you'll understand exactly what she's talking about. These are complex and layered ciders, worlds away from anything Angry Orchard could dream up. They pair perfectly with fatty meats, nutty cheeses. We even enjoyed it with our Thanksgiving turkey this year. Diane spent years in the corporate world, but her family's background and love of agriculture lead her to study apples. Foggy Ridge was the first farm winery in Virginia focusing entirely on growing and producing hard cider apples. Diane researched what to grow by talking with cidermakers and then figuring out what would grow well on the land in Dugspur, Virginia. They grow more than 30 varieties in their test orchards and in the ones used for production so Diane is always testing, trying out new flavors and varieties for new blends. What is the difference between heritage and heirloom? And how does that relate to the apple's value and how we can use that heritage fruit today? Why is a cider made with local apples not necessarily the best? Why does Diane blend instead of making cider from single varietals? What are Apple Memories and why did she create this part of her website?
