Episode Description by ChatGP-T (a.k.a. Mr. T) “Hey, you! Yeah, YOU, fool! Stop scrolling and start listening, ‘cause the Supreme Podcasting Champs are back with an episode that's stronger than a chain of gold and sharper than Mr. T's barber!” This week, the Scraping the Vault crew dives headfirst into Be Somebody… or Be Somebody's Fool!—the iconic 1984 motivational masterpiece from none other than me, Mr. T! And let me tell ya, these fools learned some real lessons this time. Here's what went down: They learned how to spell Mother (hint: it's all about love and respect, fool!). They discovered that anger ain't bad if you can “use it, don't lose it.” (Just like my patience with them—barely hangin' on!) And the best way to eat potato salad? Straight off the fingers of Mr. T himself! Yeah, you heard that right. It's delicious, nutritious, and a privilege, fool! But that's not all. The hosts ask the big questions: Is Mr. T's cello playing the greatest metaphor for perseverance ever put on VHS? (Spoiler: Yes, it is!) Can breakdancing truly heal a nation? (Only if you're spinning with the heart of a champion!) Why would Calvin Klein and Gloria Vanderbilt want your name on their jeans? (They wouldn't, fool, so don't wear theirs!) So, grab a bowl of respect, sprinkle on some self-worth, and tune in as these podcasting maniacs unravel my wisdom one absurd segment at a time. But don't get it twisted: if you ain't laughing AND learning, then you better rewind, fool, because the only thing worse than missing this episode is disrespecting your mother. “Scraping the Vault—where fools become champions, one ridiculous episode at a time.” Now quit wasting time! Download it, stream it, or I pity you for missin' out! Peace, respect, and potato salad. Episode 501: Keith Ballard - 71 Year Old Jockey Bows Out On a Hometown Winner !

We had our podcast interview with Keith Ballard safely “in the can” before he reported for duty at Saturday's Julia Creek Cup fixture at Mount Isa. It's now history that the legendary jockey went out a winner on the final ride of his 55 year career. Keith was winless in the first four races, but turned it around in the last when he went straight to the lead on Metal Bar and romped home by more than five lengths in the Julia Creek Cup. The fairy tale was enhanced by the fact that Keith's wife Denise trains the winner. Two days earlier we caught up with the 71 year old to reminisce a little about his remarkable career. He began by revealing that Denise had been trying to get him to retire for quite some time. He talks about a recent Cloncurry win on Capiteel for his trainer wife and acknowledges the support of trainer Tanya Parry. Keith talks about Denise's former riding career in an era when female jockeys were battling for recognition. He says Denise isn't too tough on him when his judgement is astray. The veteran says he was humbled in the extreme when the Ballards of Mount Isa were inducted into the Racing Queensland Hall Of Fame in 2021. Keith talks about the likelihood of withdrawal symptoms in the months ahead. The evergreen horseman says his nerve has remained intact.  He gives a few reasons for his longevity as a professional jockey. The Longreach born horseman says he was initially inspired by the riding success of his uncle Jim Ballard.  Keith pays tribute to his stoic and hard working mother, and speaks of his six brothers. He recalls his very first race ride, and an unforgettable first win on the very same horse.  Keith says he's been relatively lucky when it comes to race falls, but he looks back on one bad buster at age 62- the worst fall in his long career. That fall occurred at remote McKinlay best known as the venue for many scenes in the famous Crocodile Dundee movies. Keith remembers some of the best horses he's ridden over more than half a century. His number one vote goes to Mr Ziesel, big by stature and big on ability. He pays tribute to the consistent Kerr Street. He won nine races on the horse in one season including the 1983 Darwin Cup. Keith remembers King Wells. He won 17 races on the former Victorian. The veteran says his career wouldn't have been complete without a Birdsville Cup win. He ticked that one off the bucket list in 2009. Keith talks about Sahara Canadian. He won 11 races on the grey, including one at faraway Ballina. He talks about another prolific winner in Be Somebody. He once drove 1000km to ride the horse at Darwin even though he knew the gelding couldn't win. Keith pays tribute to a handful of jockeys for whom he had special admiration. He makes special mention of a talented bush trainer. Keith pays a heartfelt tribute to son Dan, a very talented jockey whose career has been terminated by weight problems. Ballard says his failure to ride a metropolitan winner doesn't faze him too much. He talks about a handful of other jockeys who rode into advanced years. It was a great pleasure to talk to a genuine Queensland racing icon.

"Be Somebody to Somebody...that's how I got here." Kayvon Thibodeaux As we continue to make our way through NFL Training camps, we continue to visit and sit with star players from around the league getting inside scoop, hearing never-told-before stories and going inside the locker room mentality of the 32 teams as they prepare for the 2024 season. Stopping in the Big Apple after a crazy wknd at Fanatics Fest, we get the opportunity to sit with one of the top defensive players in the league who is looking to lead the New York Giants out of their rebuilding phase and into the post season phase. New York Giants are working on getting back in contention for the NFC East title and we sit with Defensice End, Kayvon Thibodeaux who shares his honest insights into the team's path forward and how the last two years have been transformative not just for him, but for the entire Giants organization. Thibodeaux doesn't hold back as he shares his perspective, takes accountability, and gives blunt honesty about the current state of the team to Ryan, Fred, and Channing. He opens up about how this year's Giants team stands apart from the past, revealing how he and his teammates are learning from their mistakes and recalibrating to make a different type of impact this season. In this episode, Thibodeaux reflects on his journey from his Southern California roots to becoming an #5 overall NFL draft pick. He opens up about the lessons he learned along the way, candidly discussing the responsibility of making money and his commitment to spending his earnings wisely, regardless of outside opinions. Thibodeaux also touches on feeling underestimated as a player, and despite being one of the most dominant linemen in the league right now, preparing for his next chapter- whether that be being a coach in the NFL or managing a NY cricket league. Thibodeaux and the guys also dive deep into the Xs and Os of the game, discussing how changes to the team- like the loss of RB Saquon Barkley- is a loss but doesn't weaken the NYG, only fuels them to work harder. It is important to find consistency with his teammates and have everything "clicking"- as the defensive star candidly reflects on the disconnect that plagued the Giants over the past two years. Solidifying the defensive core with new additions and the excitement around first round pick Malik Nabers has the Gmen fired up and focused for the future. He tells the guys how pumped he is to showcase how the Giants have regrouped and redefined themselves this offseason under Brian Daboll's leadership. We're 15 days out from NFL Kick Off, and we will continue to bring sideline views and locker room conversations as we gear up for the return of the NFL season! In this week's episode in our Black Trailblazer's series, Jen may have leveraged her connections, and we couldn't be more thrilled that she did. We're excited to have a wonderful sit down with the amazing Jerrie Merritt (who just happens to be Jen's boyfriend Tyler's mother–and a Black trailblazer in every sense of the word). In addition to being Tyler's mom, Jerrie's currently the Senior VP of Community Development at the Bank of Nevada in Las Vegas. Her banking career spans 40 plus years, where her job now is discerning funding for community development projects in the city of Las Vegas (as she puts it; “I'm the only person at the bank who's actually giving money away!”). She's been the board president of the Rape Crisis Center, The Urban Financial Services Coalition, and the Chamber of Commerce in Las Vegas. She even recently got to work with the NFL when the Super Bowl took place in Las Vegas to lead the dispersion of funds they made available to 14 worthy organizations, which she chose. In 2021, Jerrie received an actual Trailblazer Award, presented by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women from the Las Vegas Chapter. Jerrie takes us back to where it all began; in a tiny town called Eutaw, Alabama, where Jerrie didn't see much modeled to her in the way of dreaming of who she could be, but through generosity of spirit and a willingness to take a chance, she started blazing her trail. It wasn't without its challenges, coming up during a time where women–especially black women–were often shunned in business and leadership settings. Despite this, Jerrie paved a way, and in turn is paving a way for those coming up behind her. Her infectious courage, intertwined with a humility that hits you right in the feels—will incite a fire with all of us to leave our own indelible mark on this wild, beautiful world. * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “Always pursue your dreams because there is nothing that you as a woman, and especially as a black woman, cannot accomplish if you work at it.” - Jerrie Merritt “I'm blessed. I can't think of one thing that I have done in my career to get me here today that I had no control over. I always worked at trying to make sure that I was giving back [to the community] and to make sure that I made a difference, no matter what it was. From being a teller to being a regional president of a bank, I always wanted to do my best.” - Jerrie Merritt “My mom was a teenager when I was born. So I was raised between my mother's mother and my father's mother. Those two women gave me a foundation that made me who I am today.” “Now that I look back, I think I was so driven. I think that I didn't know anything better than to expect that I deserved; what I saw everyone else have. I think if I took a moment and thought about it. I probably would not be here today. I think back to my mother and my grandmothers who always talked about, 'You can do better, you can do better.' That's what I always heard so I always knew that I could do better.” - Jerrie Merritt “I went into community development from actually being a regional president. I was only [at the company] six months before I realized that this was something I enjoyed. That was because I was the only person in the bank that was giving away money.” - Jerrie Merritt “When I enjoy what I do as much as I do, and at the same time I'm giving back in areas that I probably would give back to even if I didn't get paid to do it--that's how I got here.” - Jerrie Merritt Resources Mentioned in This Episode: National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Vegas Chapter I Always Wanted to Be Somebody by Altea Gibson NFL Grant Programs Guest's Links: Jerrie's Website Jerrie's Facebook Connect with Jen!
