Journaling (expressive writing or gratitude journaling) is a widely used non-pharmacological tool for coaching and counseling and the treatment of a wide variety of health challenges. Writing about stressful and traumatic events can significantly benefit our physical and emotional health. In fact, studies show that time spent journaling about our deepest thoughts and feelings can even reduce the number of sick days we take off work. Journaling can help us accept rather than judge our mental experiences, resulting in fewer negative emotions in response to stressors. Journaling, a therapeutic intervention used in many different disciplines and psychological approaches, is easy to implement and get started and it can benefit people experiencing an array of health challenges including and not limited to:anxietydepressionstress managementreflectionrecoveryWith practice, journaling can help process emotions–even ones that have been avoided or held back–and lead to a better understanding of how to proceed.About Our Guest:Maggie is a writer, life coach, and founder of Maggie's Way, a methodology in the field of mental well-being with a focus on adults who are under significant pressure in our current society. After navigating various paths and diagnoses and consulting with experts, Maggie ultimately found the key to happiness: Our thoughts dictate our emotions.  Her introspective quest led her not only to heal but also to discover her true self and the courage to advocate for herself. These sessions are recorded from Clubhouse and replayed here on the Italian Wine Podcast! Listen in on this series as Italian Wine Ambassadors all over the world chat with Stevie and their chosen wine producer. Which producer would you interview if you had your pick? More about the Co-Moderator - Fanny Breuil Fanny Breuil is from Angers in the Loire and have always been into wine. She studied agronomy engineering and oenology. First, she worked as a winemaker (France, Italy, Chile) and then as a salesperson for a wine importer in the USA. In 2008, She founded her company Genuine Wines with a deep willingness to help winegrowers located in lesser-known or underappreciated wine regions (but that had great potential). She started with Jura and Emilia Romagna. Since then she has been helping them with their export markets as part of each team. These are French and Italian domaines. Aside from her main activities within export, she also has a small Italian wine importing venture in France; she also works on Labadens, a wine project, she makes wines along with Thomas Oui, a fellow wine lover.” If you want to learn more you can by visiting: Facebook https://www.facebook.com/GenuineWines Instagram fannybreuil Twitter fanny_breuil LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/fanny-breuil/ Website https://genuinewines.com/en/blog/interview-with-fanny-breuil/ About today's guest producer: Elena Pantaleoni Elena Pantaleoni was born in Piacenza in 1965. She is native to Colli Piacentini where she makes wines today. She is the last of three siblings and has a brother and a sister. She first started working with books and music and had her own store in Piacenza. In 1991, Elena Pantaleoni took over the family estate, La Stoppa, located in Rivergaro on the first slopes of the Apennins mountains and works accompanied by Giulio Armani. The Domaine extends over 58 hectares, of which 30 are planted to vines, and the remaining 28 are left to nature. La Stopa was bought by her family in 1973 and before was run by a lawyer named Giancarlo Ageno who discovered the place to be apt for winemaking and started the production of wines with significant and curious names such as Bordò, Bordò bianco, Pinò. Since the mid-nineties La Stoppa decided to mainly cultivate the local grape varieties : Barbera and Bonarda for reds, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Ortrugo and Trebbiano for the whites. All focus is made on the work in the vineyards, managed accordingly to the organic methods certified by Suolo and Salute.

Johan gaf me een geanimeerde rondleiding. John Harley is our guest this week on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. His label is called Inizi Wines and he specializes in growing and producing Italian varietals in California which are rarely found in the United States. Inizi Wines was founded by two couples, A.J. and Jen Filipelli and John and Kirsti Harley, in 2012. John and A.J. became friends when they were studying Enology and Viticulture, respectively, at Fresno State, and their wives are also partners in the company. The word "Inizi" means "beginnings" in Italian. Their first vintage was 2012, a Charbono. It's an Italian variety that was known for a while in the Napa Valley. It is known for its acidity, dark color and beautiful aromatics. It was known as a good blending grape in the age before the Judgement of Paris, when blends were more popular, and before Cabernet Sauvignon took over. Next they taste a 2018 Tocai Friulano, a crisp white wine very popular in Italy. It is usually grown on steep, rocky hillsides, in Friuli, the region of north-eastern Italy. "You can take the grape out of Italy but you can't take the Italy out of the grape." After they started with Charbono, they continued to plant and produce unfamiliar wines. The four of them have jobs in other parts of the wine industry and they were surprised at how much success they have had. They have a tasting room in Guerneville. They also make three blends, a white, red and rosé, from their Italian varieties. They make a Sagrantino, which is ultra-rare. They also make Montepulciano. Their red blend is their most popular bottling, it has Montepulciano, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Barbera and a little Cabernet Sauvignon. Dan Berger notices that the 2015 Charbono is dark but has low tannins. John compares it to a cool climate Syrah. John explains that they don't own their vineyards but they work closely with the vineyard owners. They have ancient Charbono vines. There are only about 70 acres of Charbono in the US. They grow Charbono in Argentina, where it is also called Bonarda. (The name Bonarda is also known in Italy.) In Argentina, they use it for blending with their Malbecs. Dan Berger explains that it is not easy to find these plantings of old Italian varieties in California, you have to go out and hunt for them. John tells about his Italian grandfather who started selling grapes in New York on a small scale and eventually grew to a nationwide business and he became known as The Juice King of the US. They also taste a Sagrantino that Dan says is so extraordinary that he would cellar it for 30 or 35 years. Sagrantino comes from the south of Italy and is one of the most tannic wines in the world. It has to be a year in the barrel and two years in the bottle, by Italian DOC standards. His friend Dick Handel has an acre and a half of this on a hill in Dry Creek. "You can take the grape out of Italy but you can't take the Italy out of the grape." Dan compares it to a walk in the forest in the summertime. Sagrantino is the Barolo of the south, says Dan, quoting friend of the show Don Chigazola. John says it could be compared to a Cabernet Sauvignon. Dan suggests having it with roast lamb with garlic. There are only about 10 acres of this grape grown in the US. Dan says it is a hard fruit to work with, you have to use small quantities of fruit and make it gently. John says they had about a ton and a half. They had it in a large open topped container, they de-topped the fruit, it has about 10% whole cluster, to give it a softer structure and aromatics, and that helped kick off its native ferment with its indigenous yeast. They gently extracted the wine, a couple of punch-downs per day. The yeast produces CO2 and ethanol. The skins float to the top. That's where the c0lor, flavors and tannins are, so you want to mix that back down into the juice, 2 or 3 times per 24 hours. This they do manually. The vines struggle on the hillside and that produces really concentrated ...

Mendoza is Argentina’s most important and prolific wine region, representing two-thirds of the nation’s wine production. We talk about the effect of altitude and other geographical features that make this area so unique. Then we break down sub regions and discuss the incredible diversity that guarantees there is a wine style for every palate out of this beautiful, mountainous wine region.   Here are the show notes: First we tackle the stats and some history on the region: High altitude vineyards in the Andes Mountains that range from 430-1610 M/ 1,411 – 5,282 feet Latitude: 32˚ - 34˚ south 151K hectares/373K acres 5 large sub-regions: Valle de Uco, Primera Zona, North, East and South Mendoza Zones Mendoza wine blossomed with the railroad coming through in 1885 and industrial wine production reigned for many decades. International markets weren’t a priority until the financial crisis of the late 1990s.   Next, we discuss the unique geography and terrain of the region: We delve into the intense climate, the desert-like conditions, and how irrigation happens thanks to the inventions of the Huarapes and Incas We discuss the altitude for a long time (sorry if it’s too dorky!) – and why it is the most important thing Mendoza has going for it. Most vineyards are 3,000 -5,000 feet above sea level – big diurnals mean grapes can maintain acidity despite intense sunlight Soils: Alluvial with loose sand over clay – areas differ based on what runs down the mountain… Sandy areas – lighter, more aromatic elegance (red fruit) Clay-based soils with lime: Dark, powerful Malbec   We chat about grapes and wine colors of Mendoza Red: 61.2% with the main grapes: Malbec – 40% Bonarda – 17% Cabernet Sauvignon – 12% Syrah – 9% Tempranillo – 6% White: 15.8%: Chardonnay – 21% Torrontés Riojano – 15% Chenin Blanc – 7% Sauvignon Blac 6.5% Rose: 23%     Then we riff on sub regions for the rest of the show!  I. South Mendoza: San Rafael: Malbec, Bordeaux blends – Cab, Syrah, Bonnarda, Chard, Semillon, Torrontés II. East Mendoza San Martin: Lots of coops, lots of Criolla Grande, Cereza, now moving to better wines Lower altitude, a bit warmer, flabbier   III. North Mendoza: also warmer, can be very soft/low tannin and low acid wines   IV. Primera Zona: Maipu and Lujan de Cuyo – 40% of Argentina’s wineries, 881 inn total Maipu –12 districts, 6% of Argentine wine Familia Zuccardi, Rutini and Trapiche have vineyards here Maipu is not quite as highly regarded as Lujan de Cuyo or Uco Valley  Important Subareas: Lulunta: East of Mendoza city, altitude is around 900-930m/ 3000 ft Rich style of Malbec Barrancas: 115 miles/185 km south of Mendoza city.Centered around the small township of the same name. Old region – started in 1880s Slightly warmer climate here and lower lower altitude – 2500 ft/750 m- softer and riper than those from other parts of Mendoza Cab, Syrah, Malbec    Luján de Cuyo –14 districts, 8% of Argentine wine production Just south of the city of Mendoza and on higher ground to the west of Maipú Vistalba and Compuertas north of the river and Perdriel and Agrelo south of it Grapes: Malbec with Cab, Chard, Torrontes Hot, dry, desert-like but moderated by high altitude – average is 3300 ft/1000 m Alluvial soils are the big thing here – rocky, sandy, poor soils, mountain soils – lots of stress on the vine Catena Zapata, Bodega Septima, Cheval des Andes   Important Subareas: Agrelo  Complex Malbec – long-lasting, powerful wines Also Cab, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc In Center of Lujan de Cuyo: Bodega Septima, Pulenta Estate, Catena Zapata, Susana Bilbao   Las Compuertas At opening of the Mendoza River as it emerges from the mountains -- Las Compuertasmeans "the floodgates" Malbec vines are some of the oldest in Mendoza, up to 100 years old. Other grapes: Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay Famous winery: Cheval des Andes   Perdriel  Small sub-region (20 kilometers/ 13 miles) south of Mendoza Some of the oldest vineyardsof Malbec and Cab Wines are subtler and more refined, floral notes   Vistalba (means "view of the dawn" in Spanish) Southwest of Mendoza Malbec, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir Cabernet, Sauv Blanc, Bonarda Slightly higher than the surrounding regions -- better air circulation Wines are often elegant in style Trapiche. Bodega Vistalba     V. Uco Valley (Valle de Uco)-- 14% of all Argentinean wine Hour's drive south from the city of Mendoza, famed wineries Since 2006, cultivated area grown by 65%, double the size of Luján de Cuyo Grapes: 50% Malbec, Cab Franc has potential, Chard, Torrontés Each zone offers a different profile of Malbec and other wines. European investment here – from Bordeaux in particular:Lurton, Rothschild and Rolland Soils: alluvial and fairly uniform: a clay and rock base with a stony, sandy surface Cooler climate, slower ripening, Slightly higher above sea level Maipu and Lujan de Cuyo   Important Sub areas: Tupungato  Vineyards planted nearly 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) above sea level – way cooler here than farther north Northern end of the Valle de Uco southwest of Mendoza. Best -- Gualtallary, a precious corner Violet scented Malbec: earthy, herbal and balsamic Cabernet Franc: elegant Pinot Noir Tunuyán  All about sub-appellations: Chacayes: High vineyards, full but minerally wines Los Árboles: Coolest area, borders Tupungato – Chardonnay is best here Vista Flores: Prized property – (Clos de los Siete – Michel Rolland’s property is here) San Carlos Tunuyán river helps influence vineyards -- sandy alluvial soils with rocks and calcareous stones are irregular and that gives a lot of diversity in style Two important subregions: Paraje Altamira: Fruity, earthy reds with minerality, dusty note. Excellent Semillons (Check out Finca Suárez or Mendel) La Consulta: Many old vines with intense and concentrated reds   Please shop around, try all the different styles and let us know what you like! Robert Larsen is back with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today. He has brought the Grenache and Grenache Rosé from his personal label, The Larsen Projekt. Robert Larsen is also a publicist with many years experience in the wine business. The 2018 Rosés are coming out now and Robert has brought his entry. Dan Berger starts with a big compliment to Robert's wines. "The most important thing is, it's dry!" says Dan. It sells for only $20. Dan says that with the Rosé boom, some are pricing above $20 which Dan says you can get if it is dry. Robert Larsen was at Rodney Strong Vineyards for many years and now he does marketing and public relations representation for many other wineries. The Larsen Projekt is his personal production. He likes Grenache in all its blends and forms. They are tasting his 2018 Grenache Rosé from Dry Creek Valley. Dan says that Grenache gives you a red wine floral as opposed to a white wine floral. It is dry, with more than 7g of acid, it goes great with seafood. The fruit comes from Mike Saini Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, for the Grenache Rosé and red. He has a team of winemakers who are former colleagues. He uses the Healdsburg custom crush facility. Dan says the Saini family knows something about Grenache. They grow aggressively and the vines must be pruned well. "It is luxurious and beautiful," says Steve. Robert Larsen Projekt wines are available at the Larsen Projekt website. Previous vintages are mostly at restaurants. Wilabee's and Oliver's carry them retail, and the restaurants Franchetti's,  Jackson's, The Pullman Kitchen and Bistro 29 also do. Robert Larsen started at Sonoma State University but before their wine business program was developed. He took an internship at Glen Ellen Winery. He still works with some people he met there. He was at Buena Vista, and also in Monterey County and Mendocino, but always came back to Sonoma County. Dan says Grenache has lower tanins and therefore more approachable wines. Demand for it is increasing and more growers are planting it. It was originally called Bonarda and was made as a blender to cut the tannins in the Malbecs in Argentina. The Bonarda is related to an Italian grape, originally. The Grenache is an offshoot variety grown in the Rhone Valley. It is the dominant grape variety in the Southern Rhone Valley and an important component in Chateauneuf du Pape. Most of the Grenache around now was planted from 1994 to 1998 or younger. They grow very tall fronds early in the growth season and you have to cut it way back. Too much fruit makes flavorless wine. The 2018 Grenache Rosé will be released in the next two weeks, on the website. The 2017 Grenache is blended with a little bit of Syrah, about 13%. Dan says this is Grenache as it wants to be, when it is a varietal. This one, from California, has lower tannins than a European variety. There are 13 legal varieties used in southern Rhone wines, which make up Chateauneuf du Pape. There are people who can not abide Cabernet Sauvignon because the tannins are too strong, so they drink Merlot instead. If you don't like bitterness in your wine, this is the wine to buy. Robert Larsen's production is small, only 250 cases of the Grenache Rosé. But he only made 75 cases of the Red Grenache.

The great grape of Piedmont has a lot in common with the great grape of Burgundy, but it may be even more selective about site and growing conditions. In this show, we tell you what to look for in a great Nebbiolo, plus places outside of Piedmont doing a good job with this finicky grape!   Here are more detailed show notes:  Nebbiolo Overview Parents of Nebbiolo likely are extinct 1268 earliest mention – called Nibiol 13th, 14thcenturies – one of the oldest, most widespread grapes in Piedmont In the 15th century, the penalties for chopping a Nebbiolo vine were stiff! Name – from nebbia or “fog” – thick bloom covering ripe berries, like they are covered in fog. Could also be b/c fog covers piedmont hills Four clone types: Nebbiolo Lampia – most widespread, more highly valued for the quality Nebbiolo Michet –virused form of Lampia Nebbiolo Bolla – declining because it’s too productive and dilute in flavor Nebbiolo Rosé – has evolved into a different grape, not a clone, but still blended in   Nebbiolo in the Vineyard: Early budding, VERY late ripening, can’t plant anywhere spring frosts are an issue Always given best hillside sites -- south and southwest facing Fussy about soil – really thrives only on calcareous marl north and south of the town of Alba, and on the right bank of Tanaro Not adaptable, doesn’t travel well Best vintages experiencedry weather during September & October Nebbiolo warmth to develop get sugar/alcohol and fruit flavors to balance high acidity and tannins Like Pinot Noir in ability to express terroir so differently – cru in Barbaresco/Barolo divided because it can pick up subtleties   Wine Character and Flavors: Light color, turns orange very fast High in acid and tannin PERFUMED!! Aromas – tar, dried cherries, licorice, violets, roses, decaying leaf, woodsmoke, earthy   Oak effect on Nebbiolo Small French oak barriques v. traditional large Slovenian oak casks, orbotti Small barrels = faster-maturing wines with less character. Most producers today use a mixture of the two, depending on the particular vintage, vineyard   Blending Can be used to add color and/or soften the grape's harsh tannins. Common blenders: Barbera, Bonarda, Croatina, in Roero: Arneis DOCG regulations for Barolo and Barbaresco call for the wine to be a 100% Nebbiolo.     Where is Nebbiolo Grown: Piemonte: Grows 3/4 of all Nebbiolo   Outside of Barolo and Barbaresco: Gattinara, Ghemme, Roero: 75-95% of Nebbiolo in Ghemme and Gattinara. Blended with Vespolina, Croatina, and Bonarda Other Piedmont DOCs to look for: Carema, Langhe Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo d’Alba – at least 85% Nebbiolo, often 100%   Lombardia – Nebbiolo called Chiavennasca Doesn’t ripen well often so the tannin and acidity are too high in these wines – Valtellina/ Valtellina Superiore   Lower part of Valle d’Aosta (a different province) – subalpine and in poor years there is harsh acidity and tannins   Outside Italy: Languedoc, France: Mas de Daumas Gassac, some in their top red blend Switzerland: 2 producers use it United States: California – 150 acres/61 ha in Paso Robles, Santa Cruz Mtns, Sierra Foothills, Amador, Moneterey, Santa Ynez, Santa Barbara. Thus far, producers have had a hard time finding the right sites for Nebbiolo Other U.S.: Washington State (Yakima), OR, VA, PA, TN, NM, in Canada – BC, Mexico Argentina: Mainly in  San Juan, Mendoza Some in Chile, South Africa, New Zealand, growing in popularity in Australia   And thanks to this week's sponsors! In this podcast we cover it all!   Overview: Barbera is one of Italy's top 5 most planted grapes, one of the 15 most planted in the world! 60%+ is in Piemonte, but it's found in almost every region We have no real idea of the parentage, but we know it's not related to the other Piedmont grapes...a strange anomaly that needs more investigation!    About the Grape Large bunches, oval, very dark blue berries – darkest of all the reds of Piemonte  Productive, ripens late, can get out of control quickly so pruning is a must. Even at high yields it tastes ok because of its acidity Drought resistant, versatile in many soil types, adaptable   The Wine The best are bright with good acid, cherry notes, earth, spice, low tannins With barrel age the wine can be plummy, round, softer and more complex -- oak can "beef up" the wine Barbera is a good blender but on its own can be tasty although it needs food There is A LOT of variety in winemaking and character Producers: Great producers of Barolo and Barbaresco make good Barbera Giacomo Conterno, Braida, Marchesi Gresy, Vietti, Paolo Scavino,  Giuseppe Mascarello, La Spinetta, Gaja Famed wine: Bricco dell'Uccellone     Appellations Italy Barbera d’Asti and Barbera Monferrato Superiore DOCG, up to 15% Freisa, Grignolino, Dolcetto. Asti – Barbera is queen  Nizza is the top wine – 100% Barbera, strict rules Lighter in color than other appellations in Piedmont Unofficial Classico region – between Nizza Monferrato, Vinchio, Castelnuovo Calcea, Agliano, Rocchetta, Belveglio – Barbera’s traditional best zone Barbera d’Alba DOC Smoother, richer, velvety Barbera – complex, powerful, dark in color Alba is popular because good winemkaers are here – best Barolo is made here and those winemakers also make Barbera limits the quality and quantities of the wines labeled with the Barbera d'Alba DOC.  Barbera del Monferrato DOC Barbera is blended with up to 15% Freisa, Grignolino, Dolcetto and can be slightly sparkling Tart, fruity, light, sharp acidity, can be frizzante , not in the market Lombardia: Oltrepo Pavese, some blended with Bonarda.  Usually good acidity, good with full food Emilia-Romagna: often blended with other stuff   Other regions: California First planted in 1880s Today: Bonny Doon in Central Coast, Peterson in Sonoma, many producers in Sierra foothills/Amador County, Lodi, Napa, Paso, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Central Valley Other US: Washington, Arizona, Oregon Australia: Barossa Top producers: Brown Brothers, Crittenden Argentina:  Mendoza makes good Barbera, used for blending Greece, Israel, Uruguay   Thank you to our sponsors this week: YOU! Show Notes Wine of the Week Jan 10-16, 2012: La Chamiza Bonarda When you drive through the streets of Mendoza Argentina there is a clear Italian influence on the architecture and cutlture. Many of the street names are Italian names which makes perfect sense when you consider that the majority of the immigrants that built Mendoza came from Italy in the 1860’s. A whole bunch came from the Marche region which is located on Italy’s East Coast. With that pedigree it is not too hard to see how such a vibrant wine culture has developed in Mendoza and surrounding area. One of the many gifts bestowed upon the area were some grapes, namely Bonarda. What?  You say... Bonarda, what the heck is Bonarda. It is said that Bonarda has it’s home in the hills and valleys on the border between France and Italy and is known as Charbono in California. When speaking to those in the know in Argentina they can confirm that it is not Croatina which comes from Lombardy and is likely Bonarda Piedmontese. In any case Bonarda, until recently replaced by Malbec, was the most widely planted grape in Argentina although you wouldn’t know it as it was used mostly for bulk table wines of varying qualities. Today, however, the new generation of wine maker’s is crafting varietal wines out of Bonarda that are wonderfully flavourful and rich. In fact on the buying trip I did last May, I tasted over 700 wines in 10 days and although there were numerous to die for Malbec’s, what really showed through was Bonarda’s. By nature Bonarda lends itself to our palates. We tend to like the look of inky purple wines in the glass (downside is that it can leave a nasty stain and has a penchant for falling on white silk blouses, expensive white tailored shirts and of course, white carpet), it gives us a feeling of depth and mystery. Careful though as I find that there have been many times that I have spied a ‘black’ wine and laden it with great expectations only to be met with a thin, tannic, acidic purple stain on my teeth. Anyway when it is short cropped the colour can be quite intense. The nose is often cherry, plum and bright berry, almost grapey which is good as that is what it often tastes like to. The texture makes it perfect for pairing with lighter cuisine as Bonarda is naturally low in tannin but with moderate acidity (similar in many ways to Barbera). The mouthfeel is fresh and alive and the finish is juicy but not long. Your palate will never likely tire from too much alcohol or tannin on this wine. I would happily pair this with pork, pizza, pasta, ham, roasted poultry, and cheeses like Gouda and Cheddar. The only drawback to Bonarda in BC is that there really only a few available, so the full spectrum is not available to experiment with... allow I’m doing my part to change this. Now about the La Chamiza Bonarda. La Chamiza sources their grapes from the Tupungato and Argrelo districts which are the same areas that luminary wineries like Catena source their grapes from. Bonarda is naturally late ripening so the best quality will come from regions that are warm, dry and have a long growing season. This describes Tupungato to a ‘T’.... pun intended. You may remember La Chamiza from a few years back as they were in the BC market in a big, cheap way. La Chamiza is not a low end producer. They may low key, but they are not low end. So they pulled out of the market for a couple of years in the hopes of re-establishing themselves as a quality/value producer but not a cheap one. If the Bonarda is an indication we will start to see some of the best options from this winery and region. The nose is big cherry and bright berry, with hints of grape jelly. While the palate if full of rich juicy flavours and a hint of delicate purple flowers. The texture is bright and fresh due to the acidity, and the finish is nicely juicy thanks to the low tannins. In relation to other wines in the $15 range I have to say that this really delivers, the only problem is that this was a one time buy and once it is gone it won’t come back for several months. PRICE $15.99 PAIR WITH pizza, pastas like lasagne and meat sauces, roasted chicken, pork chops, pork tenderloin, Barbecue Ribs, Burgers. OCCASIONS this is a great wine for Pizza Night, Family Movie Night, Casual Get Togethers, Simple Dinner parties and evenings. AVAILABILITY Special Order purchase so once it is gone it won't be back until the next vintage.
