Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHTHE DEAD SPEAK! The opening crawl reveals that a mysterious broadcast has been heard across the galaxy in the voice of the late Emperor Palpatine. BUT HOW?! Leia dispatches agents across the galaxy to gather information on this, while Kylo Ren, now Supreme Leader of the First Order, searches for Palpatine in an effort to eliminate all potential threats to his power.Kylo Ren finds this triangle thing which leads him to a hidden planet where he finds Palpatine, still kicken. Palpatine unveils a fleet of Star Destroyers and offers it to Kylo if he finds and kills Rey, who is continuing her Jedi training under Leia. During Rey's training, She has a chat with Kylo Ren through their Force bond—brief flashes of the past—and accidentally crushes BB-8 during training. I was so mad at her for hurting sweet BB-8.Poe announces to the Resistance that Palpatine is alive and plans to unleash his fleet. To stop him, they need the Sith Finder which Rey believes to be on a planet called Pasanna.The. crew lands during a sick dance party. Rey meets a local who gives her a necklace—through their Force bond, Kylo take it from her and determines her location. Rey is soon approached by Leia's contact—Lando Calrissian. He explains that he and Luke once searched for a Sith hunter named Ochi, who may have held the key to finding the Wayfinder. They found his ship, but no trace of him.Stormtroopers arrive, and the heroes flee into the desert, falling into quicksand that leads to an underground cave. There, they find a Sith dagger inscribed with a clue. Unfortunately, C-3PO's programming prevents him from translating Sith text.Rey senses Kylo approaching and confronts him while the others prepare for takeoff. She brings down Kylo's ship but is shocked to see Chewie captured. As she and Kylo both use the Force to stop a transport from leaving, Rey loses control and unleashes Force lightning—destroying the ship and, seemingly, killing Chewie.Don't worry - Chewie is fine. He was on a different ship and they're going to hold him captive.Poe takes the gang to see an old friend, Zorii Bliss. She takes them to a tiny little fella who can bypass 3PO's programming so that 3P0 will finally translate the Sith text, but will also erase his memory. Suddenly, the First Order arrives, having tracked the group. Rey senses that Chewie is alive on their Star Destroyer—they realize he must have been on a different transport. The crew sneaks onto the ship. While Finn and Poe are captured, Rey goes to retrieves the dagger, has a force battle with Kylo, and has a vision of the emporer killing her parents, who were hiding her to protect her. Kylo tells her it's because she's a Palpatine. The captives are about to be executed—but General Hux intervenes, revealing himself as the spy. He helps them escape, explaining he doesn't care who wins, as long as Kylo loses. Rey refuses to join Kylo Ren in destroying Palpatine and the crew escapes with Chewie and the Falcon. Hux is immediately killed for being a spy. The team heads to where the Death Star wreckage lies. They meet Jannah, a former stormtrooper who, like Finn, escaped the First Order. Rey finds the Wayfinder—but experiences a dark vision of herself as a Sith Vampire combo package. Kylo shows up and they begin to fight. Suddenly, Kylo gets a vision of his mom, Leia, taking her last breath. He drops his lightsaber which Rey catches and uses to stab him. But then when she feels like Leia is dead, she heals Kylo so he can mourn without pain:? idk man. Kylo has a vision of his father who encourages him to return to the light. Kylo throws his lightsaber into the water. Poe is named General and doubts his ability to lead. Lando comes outta nowhere to give him a pep talk. Intending to exile herself like Luke, Rey tries to destroy her lightsaber, but Luke's Force ghost appears. He tells her that Leia knew all along who she was and still believed in her. He gives her Leia's saber and helps her retrieve the Wayfinder from Kylo's ship. Rey pilots Luke's old ship. With a signal from Luke's ship coming through, the Resistance prepares for battle. Poe and Finn lead the attack, on horse back cuz duh. Rey shows up to confronts Palpatine. Dude is pumped to see his granddaughter. He says he doesn't want to kill her, rather he wants her to kill him so his spirit will enter her and they can lead together. Kylo shows up and they fight together, sharing Leia's saber through the Force. Papetine enjoys the show and then uses his lightning fingers on both of them which is like draining their power. The Resistance attacks Palpatine's fleet, but they're outmatched. Just as hope fades, Lando arrives with a massive fleet from across the galaxy. As Rey lies on the ground, she hears the voices of past Jedi who encourage her to get up! She confronts Palpatine again, deflecting his lightning with both Luke and Leia's sabers. As he declares “I am all the Sith,” Rey responds, “And I... am all the Jedi,” and destroys him. She's on the verge of death from the blast, but Kylo climbs out of the pit he was throw in and revives her with his own life force. They kiss BIG ONESSSS! But then he dies. Womp Womp. The Resistance destroys the Sith fleet. And the heroes reunite and celebrate the win. The movie ends with Rey and BB8 take the Falcon to Tatooine. She buries the Skywalker lightsabers there and shows that i guess she has her own yellow one now. When a local asks who she is, she says Rey. Follow up Q for you - Rey who? She ponders the answer until she sees the ghost of Luke and Leia smiling at her and she says Rey Skywalker as she and BB9 watch the twin suns.

Dana and Tom with 5x club member, Shane Rogers (Comedian and Host of Midnight Facts for Insomniacs) and Jesse Sertle (fellow group member of CineMadison) discuss the movie that created the biggest film franchise of all-time, Star Wars (1977): written and directed by George Lucas, cinematography by Gilbert Taylor, music by John Williams, starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness, and James Earl Jones.Plot Summary: Star Wars is set in a galaxy far, far away under the oppressive rule of the Galactic Empire. The story follows a young farm boy, Luke Skywalker, who discovers his destiny when he comes across a pair of droids carrying secret plans for the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star. With the guidance of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as the help of a roguish pilot, Han Solo, his co-pilot Chewbacca, and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, Luke embarks on a daring mission to rescue Princess Leia from the clutches of Darth Vader and to aid the Rebel Alliance in their fight for freedom. The film is a tale of heroism, hope, and the battle between good and evil.Guests:Shane RogersComedian and Host of Midnight Facts for InsomniacsPreviously on Broadcast News (1987), The Big Lebowski (1998), Superman: The Movie (1978), There's Something About Mary (1998), This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Ex Machina (2015)Jesse Sertlefellow group member of CineMadisonpreviously on Rounders (1998), Easy Rider (1969), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)@jsertle on IGChapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome Back to Shane and Jesse02:31 A Significant Movie in the History of GMOAT03:13 Cast and Background for Star Wars08:18 Relationship(s) with Star Wars18:25 What is Star Wars About?23:43 Will Star Wars Ever Be at the Peak of Culture Again?34:15 Plot Summary for Star Wars35:19 Did You Know?37:11 First Break38:00 What's Up with Shane Rogers and Jesse Sertle39:29 Best Performance(s)48:45 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)01:00:08 Second Break01:00:47 In Memoriam01:04:04 Best/Funniest Lines01:08:24 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:14:04 The Stanley Rubric -...
In this episode of Star Warsologies, we share the recording of our our Star Wars Celebration Japan panel "Droids, Artificial Intelligence, and Sentience" Panel description: R2-D2 and C-3PO. BB-8. Battle droids. Star Wars isn't Star Wars without its lovable droids. We'll examine the science of robots, the programming of personality and the ethics of sentient mechanicals in society, plus go behind the scenes on designing droids for the movies. Why do droids in Star Wars look the way they do? Why do we all love R2-D2? How close are we to having droid intelligence and personality in our own world? Let's go inside the gears and processing units to explore all the possibilities. Our team of experts includes Yukie Nagai (Project Professor, International Research Center for Neurointelligence, University of Tokyo), Fon Davis (ILM Model Maker - Star Wars), Chris Kempshall (author, Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire and The History and Politics of Star Wars) and Joel Welch (PhD Law candidate at Western University, Emerging Technology Policies & SciFi). A grande surpresa? Star Wars: Droids – The Forgotten First Animated SeriesIn this episode of Star Wars Generations, hosts Erin and Matthew explore Star Wars: Droids, the first-ever Star Wars animated series. This often overlooked show from the mid-1980s follows the adventures of C-3PO and R2-D2 before they joined Princess Leia, offering viewers a glimpse into their earlier escapades. The hosts examine how this episodic series was structured around three main story arcs, each following our droid heroes as they encounter new masters and get involved in various adventures across the galaxy. Despite being non-canonical in current Star Wars lore, the show provides interesting early concepts that would later influence the franchise. What makes Droids unique in Star Wars history? As one of the earliest Star Wars TV productions (second only to the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special), Droids represents an interesting moment in franchise history. The hosts discuss how the show's 1980s animation style resembles other cartoons of the era like He-Man and She-Ra, appearing somewhat amateurish by today's standards but groundbreaking for its time. How does Droids handle character development? The hosts analyze how C-3PO's personality differs slightly from his film portrayal, occasionally expressing desires to be a "freedom fighter" while still maintaining his characteristic anxiety and complaints. They also note the show's treatment of droids as property, with slavery being normalized in ways that modern viewers might find uncomfortable. What connections exist between Droids and later Star Wars properties? The hosts point out several interesting connections between elements in the show and later Star Wars productions, such as the character "Kybo Ren" potentially inspiring the name "Kylo Ren" years later, as well as appearances by characters like Boba Fett, Sy Snootles, and Max Rebo.Other topics discussed:The three main story arcs featuring different masters and adventuresEarly concepts of land racing that predated pod racing in The Phantom MenaceThe surprisingly dark "disappearing disease" featured in one episodeC-3PO's memorable quips, including threats toward petsAppearances by familiar characters like Sy Snootles and Max ReboThe show's approach to magic and mysticism not typically seen in Star WarsHow merchandising drove much of the show's creationDespite its simplistic storylines and now-outdated animation, Star Wars: Droids offers fans a fascinating look at early expanded universe content before the concept of a cohesive canon existed. While not essential viewing for casual fans, the hosts suggest it might interest completionists looking to experience every corner of the Star Wars universe.AND—stick around after the episode for a preview of this month's Star Wars Book Club Member's Only Episode on Queen's Shadow! **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Star Wars Generations, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Savon, formerly of Coffee and Comments podcast, returns to review a classic film, The Indian in the Cupboard (1995). Based on the 1980 book by Lynne Reid Banks, the story sees Omri, a young kid who lives in New York City, discover his cupboard brings his toy American Indian to life.Discussion Points:-How the book became a staple of British Primary Schools.-The DVD read-through returns.-Sean is confused by American foods.-Savon and Sean discuss the differences between the book and the film adaptation.-Savon describes how 90's the film feels and was surprised to see an Abacus. -The differences between the book and the film adaptation.-The tumultuous story of the American West.-Savon and Sean discuss the unexpected emotional depth in the film.Raised Questions:-Who chooses the books you read at Primary (Elementary) school?-Why do we read so many American based stories in Britain?-Do Americans get fed up with films based in New York?-Is this film more 'Field of Dreams' (1989) than 'Toy Story' (1995)?-What happened to skating in films?Corrections:-*Frank OZ played Yoda in the Star Wars films, not C3PO.-*Alan Abernathy was the character in Small Soldiers, not Lewis. Thanks for Listening!Find us here: X: @YourselfReviewInstagram: reviewityourselfpodcast2021YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ReviewItYourself Hosted on Acast. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, we explore the Uncanny Valley. This was inspired by a video I published about Apple's marketing campaign for Apple Intelligence. It turns out I'm not the only one unsettled by their approach. It's interesting to contrast these Apple commercials with those for Google Gemini. Apple presents its AI technology as a tool for masking personal flaws and promoting insincerity. Conversely, Google has framed AI as a social companion that enhances self-expression. It gives advice, and makes suggestions to help its users work on their goals. In other words, they frame Gemini as a support to enhance people's competence, confidence, and knowledge where Apple helps people deceive and pretend to be more skilled and knowledgeable than they really are. A Voice From The Uncanny Valley The Gemini adverts got me thinking about The Uncanny Valley. There is something eerie about the way they demonstrate the technology. Not least, seeing users glued to the phone, on the other end of which is a friendly disembodied humanoid. They have anthropomorphised this technology, giving it an uncanny human voice and the platform of a constant companion. It is a friend, teacher, mentor, cheerleader, and coach—the ultimate human! Or, perhaps not quite human. The Uncanny Valley hypothesis, coined by robotics professor Masahiro Mori in 1970, describes the discomfort humans feel toward entities that are almost but not fully human. The valley exists when something moves from anthropomorphised traits, as seen in animations of talking animals, cuddly toys with facial features, and the projected thoughts and feelings we give to our pets, to unnervingly realistic human characteristics. These nearly humans freak many of us out. But why do some of us seem more impacted than others? High Sensitivity and The Uncanny Valley Those who score higher on the sensitivity scale (Highly Sensitive People) may experience the uncanny valley more intensely due to their deeper sensory processing and emotional attunement. HSPs may be unsettled by artificiality, preferring clear distinctions between what is and isn't "real". It's interesting to consider this a foundational biological survival instinct rather than one of ethics or morality. In other words, highly sensory people unconsciously scan the world around, within, and between us, looking for signs of safety and danger. When we encounter something that seems real but doesn't feel right, it might leave us unsettled, prompting us to investigate further to see if an impostorous threat lurks within. HSPs process information deeply and are attuned to subtle sensory cues. We might detect unnatural contradictions, such as mismatched tone or body language, at a subconscious level. This attuned sensitivity can lead to unease during interactions with AI chatbots and humanoids, where inconsistencies may create discomfort even if not immediately apparent. As AI technology advances, the line between human and machine becomes more blurred, making it harder for HSPs to discern artificiality. Why Do We Make Machines in Our Image? The tendency to anthropomorphise technology—creating machines that mimic human behaviour—raises questions about our desire to replicate human characteristics in machines. It's strange! Why do we do this? Maybe it's some "god complex", or we are simply trying to figure out what it means to be human by considering what is still missing from creatures that look and sound like us. But we don't need to do this, and the uncanny valley hypothesis indicates that we would be more successful at trusting technology if we didn't try to make them in our image. Think about fictional droids, like R2-D2 and BB-8 in Star Wars. They are loveable despite, nay, because of their non-human forms. Yet they have distinct personalities and a range of emotional expressions. On the other hand, more humanoid machines like C-3PO can be profoundly irritating despite havi...
Chapter 24 of Star Wars: Dark Force Rising (1992) (EU: 9 ABY) by Timothy Zahn. All links are available in this chapter's documentShare this link to find your preferred podcast player## The Story So Far ##Leia captured one of her attempted Noghri abductors on Kashyyyk. In the interrogation, the operative Khabarakh identified her as Lord Vader's heir. Leaning on his people's reverence for Vader, Leia offered Khabarakh his freedom in exchange for an embassy on his home planet.Leia, Chewbacca and C-3PO go to Endor in the Millenium Falcon. They transfer to Khabarakh's ship and he takes them to the devastated world of Honoghr. They try to avoid Imperial detection but Khabarakh's ship is confiscated. After analysis reveals Wookiee hair throughout the ship, Khabarakh is taken into Imperial custody for treason, then left in the capital of Nystao. The Imperial Grand Admiral mysteriously disappears, so Leia plans to break into Nystao and escape with Khabarakh.During her stay, the Khim'bar Maitrakh shares the history of the Noghri people and how they came to be in the service of the Empire after a calamitous space battle wreaks planet-wide ecological collapse. Chewbacca's estimations of the decontamination effort place the disaster at the height of the Galactic Civil War, and Leia feels guilt at the untold collateral damage caused by their struggle against the Empire.## Chapter 24 ##Leia is more-or-less prepared to steal Khabarakh out of Nystao. Leia is too busy to heed C-3PO's concerns over an unusually curious decon droid. The Maitrakh tells of when her fisrtsons were conscripted by the Empire, revealing that Khabarakh is not her third-born son, but her great-grandson; meaning the calamity happened during the Clone Wars almost half a century before! Indignant, Leia is determined to bring it directly before the Dynasts. She orders Chewbacca to test the khlom-grass. The Maitrakh leaves herself to send word ahead. They leave the village by speeder under the cover of night. A large congregation follws them from each village they pass. They are brought to the Grand Dukha. Dynast Vor'corkh is defiant to allow an alien interfering with their politics. Leia calls her lightsaber forth with the Force to demonstrate her authority as the mal'ary'ush. Dynast Ir'khaim and a supermajority of dissenters call to hear Leia's proclamations.Leia holds up the analysis of the supposed khlom-grass to show that they are genetic forgeries created by the Empire and that the decontamination effort a ruse.An overly-curious decon droid is skulking behind the Grand Dukha. Leia orders its capture in exchange for proof. The droid is no match for the Noghri hunters. She opens the droid to reveal an espionage droid and a tube of decon fluid. With one drop, the plant shrivels up, demonstrating the true function of the decon droids.Vindicated, the Dynasts agree to a cover story of Khabarakh's escape. Leia promises to return with more herbicide for the imitation khlom-grass. To save precious time season's end, Leia decides to return straight for Coruscant, intending to leave the Falcon in orbit around Endor. ## Join Us ##Discuss with us on Discord or YouTubeSupport us on PatreonOur WebsiteSupport the show

Guest: Rony Abovitz, founder & CEO of SynthBeeSynthBee CEO Rony Abovitz grew up “really believing” in Star Wars and the idea that there could be benevolent, artificially intelligent beings like R2-D2 and C-3PO.“It wasn't a dystopian vision of the future,” he says. “It wasn't HAL from 2001. It wasn't the Terminator. It wasn't Skynet. It was this kind of friendly, empathetic, more utopian vision.” George Lucas himself told Rony to tone it down and not “take it so literally” — but he was undeterred. The way he describes today's leading AI powers sounds like an idealistic Rebel conceptualizing the Evil Empire.“You've got companies that receive massive funding that want to take all the data in the world ... I feel that's a massive mistake,” Rony says. “We become serfs. They become the Lords. They become the Kings. I'm completely opposed to that. Are you there, God? It's Sam Harris and Jonah. At long last, the neuroscientist-philosopher and father of the new atheism movement has come to The Remnant for a Horatian salon that is poised to discuss the really big questions—questions so big we had to double the length of the episode. Jonah and Sam debate dogma, epistemological free-for-alls, the emancipation of C-3PO, and truth as its own defense. Questions abound: Would society be free from all ill if every man and institution was fully secularized? When do we defer to the experts? How do we grapple with the cognitive dissonance of human nature and our modern ethical sensibilities? But the party doesn't end there. In the second hour of their conversation, Jonah and Sam dig into the root causes of the rise of antisemitism in elite institutions, ranging from cultural addiction to transgression to the feelings economy. They cover the rise and future of artificial intelligence, speak to the camaraderie that comes with being a classical liberal, and discuss what has been gnawing at the back of everyone's brain: What happens after Trump? Fair warning, if you make it to the end, you may have some newfound fears about an impending dogpocalypse. Show Notes: —Sam's podcast: “Making Sense” —Sam's Substack —Yuval Harari: Nexus — Chestertonian ideas The Remnant is a production of The Dispatch, a digital media company covering politics, policy, and culture from a non-partisan, conservative perspective.
