In this milestone 99th episode of Trail Society, we go all-in on Keely Henninger's third-place finish at the Canyons 100K, earning her a coveted Golden Ticket to Western States. Keely walks us through her decision to return to Western States, how she managed training on reduced mileage while in med school, and the strategies she used to stay consistent under immense pressure. We dig into the physiology, planning, and mindset shifts that made this comeback possible—including how stepping away from sponsorship has reshaped her relationship with competition. Listeners will get detailed answers to real questions from the trail community: what does tapering for a 100K really look like? How do you fuel during a freezing wet race? Can long hours on your feet at work substitute for running volume? Keely shares what went right, what she learned from what didn't, and how she's preparing to level up for Western States. Plus, we cover gear (including the story behind those glasses), race-week nutrition tweaks, and how elite women are balancing ambition with authenticity in sport. If you're navigating time constraints, training stress, or racing with less-than-ideal prep—this conversation offers both practical takeaways and serious inspiration. Send us a textIn this enlightening conversation with ultrarunner Jazmine Lowther, we explore the dynamic intersection of elite performance, career transitions, and authentic living in the mountain sports world. Jazmine takes us inside her recent move from The North Face to Arc'teryx, revealing the emotional complexity of brand identity for professional athletes and the forward-thinking athlete support systems being developed in the industry.Training in Squamish British Columbia brings unique challenges—freezing rain, challenging terrain, and a community where extraordinary multisport days are the norm. Jazmine shares how this environment shapes her approach to training while preparing for races like Canyons 100K, where she'll return as a former champion. The candid discussion about mental fortitude required for Pacific Northwest winters offers valuable perspective for anyone training through challenging conditions. The conversation takes fascinating turns through coaching philosophy, where Jazmine emphasizes human connection over training metrics. "Communication is the foundation for the coach-athlete relationship," she explains, detailing how understanding an athlete's life stressors, relationship challenges, and mental health is crucial to effective coaching. Her approach to running retreats and holistic athlete development reveals a thoughtfulness that extends far beyond physical performance. We tackle complex industry questions about race consolidation, the UTMB ecosystem, and finding balance between professional opportunities and grassroots racing culture. Jazmine's balanced perspective acknowledges both the visibility major race series bring while valuing the community events that build the sport's foundation. Her personal dilemma between targeting Western States or UTMB highlights the scheduling challenges elite athletes face in today's crowded calendar.Perhaps most compelling is Jazmine's reflection on authenticity in the trail running community, where she values genuine connections over curated perfectionism. For anyone navigating the intersection of passion, profession, and purpose in outdoor sports, this conversation offers invaluable insights from someone balancing competitive excellence with genuine human connection.Follow Jazmine on IG - @jazmine_lowtherFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow The Steep Stuff on IG - @steepstuff_podThis episode is brought to you by Ultimate Direction - use code steepstuffpod for 25% of your cart at checkout

We got the surprise of our lives before recording this dazed-and-excited episode! The main topic was the Canyons 100k. It was Megan's dream race, and you may have seen... she did not start. We had some incredibly surprising news right before we boarded our flight to California for the race, and we process it in real-time on the episode. Hopefully the discussion and Megan's openness helps you deal with whatever big surprises you face in life! Even though Megan didn't race, we cheered and crewed as ultra history was made at the race! This year's Canyons 100k had a performance for the ages from Katie Schide, plus a breakthrough from Rod Farvard, a selfless act from Drew Holmen, and so much more. We break down the dynamics, full of joy from seeing it all live! The big discussions revolve around training theory, fueling approaches, how cooling mattered even in temperate conditions, our complex thoughts on carb loading, hydration needs, and inspiration from the back of the pack. And we brought a giddy, delirious energy to some awesome topics! Other topics: why we were so surprised by the big news, how Megan feels about it all, societal expectations in early pregnancy, Allie Ostrander's wonderful reflections on crying after races, continuous lactate monitors, the 776 Invitational's huge investment in women's track and what it might mean for the future of the sport, why it's bloodwork season and what people should test, the new ruling making non-competes unenforceable and how it's relevant for endurance sports, the TikTok ban, and hot takes. After the health issues, we were unsure whether we'd ever be able to have this sort of discussion on the podcast, and listeners have been there every step of the way. If there is any test, it's in training. Racing is a celebration. This episode celebrates the broken road to get to the race-day party! This one was also packed with fun science! The main study helped debunk energy availability cycling, where athletes intentionally reduce energy availability in an attempt to improve power-to-weight ratio. Running is a power sport, and it's all about improving that power! And we had tons of our favorite topics to discuss! Other topics: getting used to on-course nutrition options, the emotional process of getting to start lines, vibes-based earrings, David's up-and-down crash recovery, a new study on fasting metabolism, 3D-printed shoes winning the Boston Marathon, the new UTMB and HOKA partnership, an international doping scandal, a cool study on e-sports training, Dan Quinn's approach to coaching, a new menstrual cycle study, and hot takes. I took on the Canyons 100K in hopes of getting a Golden Ticket. But, once again, I came up way short as I battled with a ton of adversity. The kind of adversity that I didn't expect, nor have I ever dealt with in a race before! But, in the end, I was able to get it done (even though I considered quitting), and I learned so much along the way. In this episode, I break down all of those lessons and reflections throughout my training, my race day, and afterwards in hopes that it will help you avoid the same mistakes I made. We did a happy dance for the most wonderful day of the week: Podcast Tuesday! The main discussion was on fun takeaways from racing the Canyons 100k. David stepped up into the unknown and was 5th place! But what made the day really special was hitting a low point when it seemed impossible, and finding out that there was more to give. Our suggestion is to try something really big and really scary, whether it's in athletics or something else. Shoot those shots! The race discussion led to tons of fascinating topics: the science of "deception" in hot conditions, drug testing, the role of ego, the power of subconscious expectations, inspiration from people pushing their limits, and so much more! We also discuss the wildly uncertain area of electrolyte consumption, and how population-wide recommendations may not apply to individual athletes. This race was the most fun experience OF ALL TIME, and we can't wait to do more of these. Hopefully this discussion will inspire you to try something that seems unthinkable! And that was just the start! Other topics: the US Mountain Championships and the legend of Grayson Murphy, 5 rules for fueling runs based on duration and intensity, a shocking revelation about our favorite grocery store, last week's news of a positive drug test from an elite triathlete, and a question from a listener on how to optimize fitness at lower training volumes. Our only concern is that the happy dances on this episode may lead to cheek cramping (faces and butts). Keep the salt pills close by. Winning a Golden Ticket to Western States doesn't happen by luck. It takes a lot of mental fortitude and fitness to get there, and the ones who do earn it have built tons of success in their ultrarunning journey. Ttoday's guest definitely fits that description, as she recently won a Golden Ticket at this year's Black Canyon 100K a few weeks ago, placing in 3rd in an incredibly stacked women's field. And to pull it off, she implemented tons of lessons, learnings, and experience she gained in prior races to reach her big goal out in the desert on that day. And she is definitely someone to watch as she is one of the rising stars in our sport! Today, we're chatting with Meg Morgan who is an athlete for La Sportiva based in Boulder, CO. Meg has not only won a Golden Ticket at Black Canyon, but has also placed top 10 female at Canyons 100K and Bandera, as well as being the winner of Never Summer 100K, all within less than 3 years in the ultra scene! We have Ladia on the podcast again this week for part two! Ladia opens up our conversation with a bang by challenging the prescribed narratives we feel we have to fit into as women and mothers in this place and time in society. For example, the “bouncing back” culture we experience after having babies and seeing body changes as a disservice to the other parts of our life (including running) often does not honor what we go through or how we want to embrace the growth we can find in that space. Ladia says, “but I don't want to go backwards. I don't need to be the person I was yesterday or ten years ago…. Whether in pregnancy and postpartum or not, that's not what I'm trying to move towards. I want to embrace who I am, where I am, today and every day moving forward.” We ponder how to find, process and represent our true experiences with language that will free us and others from societal expectations. The things we go through shape us and we can hone the power of that growth and channel it when facing hard things (like ultra running and motherhood). We talk about the need for mothers to have space to talk candidly about their struggles without being dismissed or having to prove their gratitude of being a mother and the importance as mothers to show our kids our full humanity. Ladia mentions, “The most important thing we do as mothers is be ourselves”. Ladia shares a little about her birth and feeling the contrast of grief from losing her best friend, Gabriele Grunewald, while looking forward to new life through her son Gabriel (named after Gabe of course!). We hear about how Ladia moved through the early postpartum days when building up running in a way that showed kindness to her body and honored her emotions and anxiety of leaving her baby for long runs. AND! We hear about her INCREDIBLE 4th place finish at Canyons 100k in April! From funny stories to positive energy to trail beauty to racing as a way to feel connection amidst the loneliness of motherhood to numb legs to oozing poison oak, it was so fun to hear Ladia tell the race day tales. We were so lucky to be in Ladia's presence again and we hope you enjoy this episode! Don't forget to subscribe and share this with your people! Thank you! One of the toughest accomplishments to achieve in ultrarunning is securing a Golden Ticket spot to Western States 100 by placing in the top 2 of the Canyons 100K race. And today's guest recently accomplished that feat, even though the race was only his first 100K ever! Adam Peterman is a HOKA athlete who has been taking the ultrarunning world by storm over the last few years in his early career. He won the JFK 50 miler in 2021, nearly breaking a seemingly unreachable course record. And in this year, he took first place at the Canyons 100K race to secure his spot at Western States 100, where he will no doubt be a top contender to look out for in an already stacked field. And in this episode, we dive into Adam's approach to training and preparation for big races, how he tackles negative thoughts during the middle of a race or on training runs, and what he's focusing on going into Western States 100. To her utter disbelief, she led the women at Canyons off the start and never let it go. I will also link in the show notes to Ryan's social channels as well as the Trails and Tarmac website in case you want to get in touch. In this first episode we kick off our coaching relationship that officially starts on January 3rd. We look into how I'm feeling, how training will be structured, strategies to stay focused, how to think about goal setting and more. Excited to welcome Beth Pascall on the show, who just finished 7th overall and first woman at the 2021 Western States endurance race. She placed a record as second fastest female ever on the 100-mile run with a time of 17 hours, 10 minutes, and 41 seconds. Beth is a British pediatrician and took time off from her job as a doctor and spent 10 weeks in the US training for Western States. Beth even got married a few days after her Western States finish.    Beth also recently won the Canyons 100K and holds the FKT for the Bob Graham Round with a time of 14 hours and 34 minutes.    “The mental preparation is just important as a physical preparation.” –Beth Pascall     In this episode we cover… The logistics Beth had to go through for training for Western States, the actual race, her wedding right after the race, and her work as a pediatrician.  How trying different sports helps you in athletic performance. For Beth it was trying rowing, cycle touring and triathlon, until she found ultra-endurance running.  “I don't think I ever really believed I could Western States until 2018 when I got picked.”  The importance of confidence. “I came to realize that I thought my confidence was affecting my results because I truly never thought I could do well in a race. Just having people around me that really believed in me and gave me that confidence.” She's done 250-mile distances which add the sleep deprivation element into it  “It's possible to keep going and also learning to listen to your body, that way you'll know what it feels like when you need to back off.”   Resources: Beth Pascal Instagram   Beth Pascal Website   Beth Pascal Twitter   Beth Pascal's Interview at Western States     Thank you to BEAM, Generation UCAN, and Tracksmith for sponsoring this episode.   A new product that I have been trying out is Beam. “Over the last years, the main thing to me when I get into a race, I think what kind of changed my trajectory at least in the road stuff, was that I don't want to look at times anymore—that was the big thing in the roads: I don't want to look at times, I just want to compete. People would ask, ‘What are you shooting for?' I'm like, ‘I just want to compete.' And that's kind of been my answer for everyone in most races that I've done over the last many years. There's been a couple times I've gone out to a race that the competition, you could tell, wasn't going to be too stout and you go out for time or a course record on that by yourself, but when there's big competition, it's just strictly about competing to me.” Anthony Costales recently won the Canyons 100K in Northern California in 9 hours, 11 minutes, and 40 seconds, defeating a stout field, which earned him a Golden Ticket to this year's Western States Endurance Run. He's only a few years into the trail and ultra game and is really starting to make a splash in the sport. A graduate of Chico State, Anthony has a 2:13 marathon personal best on the roads, he won the U.S. Trail Marathon Championship in 2018, and also represented the U.S. that year at the World Long Distance Mountain Championships in Poland, where he finished 10th overall. Anthony's a native of Fairfield, California, he now lives and teaches middle school P.E. in Salt Lake City, Utah, and he's a relatively new dad. In this conversation, we talked about Anthony's most recent win, of course, but also his progression in the sport, how he's shifted his training in recent years, and the physiological and psychological differences of racing on the trails versus competing on the roads. Anthony told me why he calls himself a silent competitor, we discussed why shorter distance trail races don't get nearly the respect and attention of ultra-distance events, and a lot more.
