In this powerful episode of the Millionaire Car Salesman Podcast, host LA Williams, the Blind Phone Master, sits down with Michael Smith, Sales Professional at Fort Wayne Toyota Lexus, for a conversation that goes far beyond the typical dealership success story. "Either you have a positive mindset, and you feel like you overcome it, or you can say, woe is me, and be negative and just give up. Well, I'm never the type to give up." - Michael Smith Michael's journey into the automotive industry didn't follow a traditional path, and along the way, he faced a life-altering challenge that would have forced many people to give up entirely. Instead, it became the catalyst for a completely different level of determination, perspective, and success. "There was something that kept you fighting, right? There was something that deep down inside of you said, I'm not done yet." - LA Williams What unfolds in this episode is a deeply human discussion about resilience, mindset, and what it really takes to build a lasting career in automotive sales. Michael shares the philosophy that has shaped his approach to customers, relationships, and personal growth, offering insights that challenge the transactional mentality often found in the car business. "I want to make sure that I'm leaving in a better place than it was when I started in the business and that people know it's the most important thing." - Michael Smith From redefining adversity to building meaningful connections with customers, this episode reveals how mindset, patience, and purpose can transform both a career and a life. If you've ever wondered what separates those who simply sell cars from those who truly build something bigger, this conversation will leave you thinking long after the episode ends. Key Takeaways: ✅ Michael Smith overcame a life-changing stroke and returned to the automotive sales industry with even greater success, proving that resilience is key in any professional journey. ✅ Building genuine relationships with clients is fundamental to long-term success in car sales, as emphasized by Michael's approach to customer service. ✅ Michael transitioned from a legal career to automotive sales and found equal financial success, demonstrating the lucrative potential of the car sales industry. ✅ The stroke prompted Michael to develop patience and a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of human connections, fueling his sales approach. ✅ Embracing a positive mindset and refusing to live down to anyone's expectations has been a crucial part of Michael's recovery and professional achievements. About Michael Smith Michael Smith is a seasoned professional in the automotive sales industry currently selling cars at Fort Wayne Toyota/Lexus. Formerly a lawyer, Michael transitioned to automotive sales more than a decade ago, where he quickly excelled. He is a dedicated salesperson at Fort Wayne Toyota Lexus and has consistently sold a substantial number of cars each month. His career in sales was notably marked by resilience and adaptability following a life-changing stroke in 2013. Despite the setbacks, Michael returned to the sales floor with a renewed focus on customer relationships and helping clients meet their transportation needs. Navigating Life's Curveballs: Lessons from a Car Salesman's Resilient Journey Key Takeaways: Embracing adversity is pivotal for growth; resilience is a non-negotiable trait in both personal and professional life. Building genuine relationships in the automotive sales industry creates lasting success. Maintaining an environment of empathy and understanding elevates not only personal triumphs but also impacts the broader business atmosphere. The Power of Resilience in Overcoming Adversity Resilience is a quintessential element in life, especially when facing unforeseen challenges that test the limits of human strength and determination. This sentiment is exemplified by Michael Smith, a car salesman at Fort Wayne Toyota Lexus, who recounted his experience dealing with a stroke while at work. "The biggest one is that on 1226 of 2013, I had a stroke while I was at work," Michael states. This moment marked a watershed in his life, illustrating the stark, unpredictable realities of life and work. Despite this adversity, Michael's story offers valuable insights into the heart and resolve required to navigate life's unexpected paths. Michael's narrative is a testament to the importance of resilience: "Well, I'm blessed in that… my cognitive abilities… didn't lose them." He turns what others might see as limitations into unique attributes, highlighting that resilience is not merely a reaction to adversity, but a commitment to overcoming it. His story encourages others in any field of work to continue pushing forward, regardless of the hurdles they face. Building Relationships: The Heartbeat of Sales Success In the competitive world of automotive sales, the power of relationship-building cannot be understated. Michael, once a practicing lawyer, found himself drawn to the car sales industry, driven by "the desire to help people." His approach was grounded in authenticity and care, making it clear that successful sales professionals prioritize the human element in transactions. Michael's philosophy in sales is straightforward: "Make it a relationship." In doing so, he not only sells vehicles but also builds trust and long-lasting connections. "Strangers become friends, and friends become family," he shares, describing how he manages to cultivate loyalty and return business. The relational approach he champions is critical for those aiming to not only survive but thrive in sales. "My clients are my friends," he states confidently. This principle is not just a strategy but a creed, underscoring the integral role of empathy and honest communication in fostering client loyalty. In a business often perceived as transactional, Michael demonstrates the profound impact of genuinely caring about the people behind the transactions. Compassion and Empathy: The Secret Ingredients for Leadership and Success Adversity often reshapes perspectives, revealing the significant role of compassion and empathy in effective leadership. For Michael, experiencing a life-altering stroke has influenced his approach to engaging with both clients and colleagues. He stresses the importance of patience and understanding, advocating for a more compassionate view of others' behaviors. This epiphany stems from his firsthand experience with challenges, rendering him more insightful: "There's not enough listening to other people that goes on." Michael's newfound appreciation for human complexities informs his dealings, prompting others to appreciate the significance of empathy in daily operations and leadership. His story transforms the abstract notion of empathy into a tangible, daily practice. "People… they want to help," he reveals. The ability to understand and share feelings amplifies trust and cohesion within a team, while enhancing the dealership's overall customer experience. Michael's journey serves as a compelling reminder that leadership grounded in empathy can catalyze positive business transformations. Michael Smith's journey underscores an indispensable journey of resilience, relationships, and empathy. These themes carve a path to not only personal success but transformative leadership within the automotive industry. For any professional striving for excellence, the lessons imparted by Michael's life story are as practical as they are inspiring. His perspective invites us to reconsider the way challenges are perceived. By nurturing genuine connections and leading with understanding, professionals can adhere to what Michael exemplifies—a life and career driven by purpose, resolve, and unyielding resilience. This mindset, when applied to business and beyond, fosters an environment where true fulfillment and success can thrive. What if four words could save you thousands at the dealership? We sit down with veteran insider Randy Presgrove to unpack 47 years of wins, wrecks, and the unfiltered truths of car buying and selling. From boardroom bravado to showroom reality, Randy pulls back the curtain on how hits are made, how flops happen, and how regular buyers can tip the deal back in their favor. We trace the anatomy of failure through icons like the Edsel and head‑scratchers like Mazda's youth‑aimed MX‑3, showing how timing, design, and marketing alignment matter more than hype. Randy explains why many product misfires teach sharper business lessons than successes, and how dealers experience those lessons in real inventory pain. Then we get practical: the research that actually moves price, captive finance deals that hide in the fine print, and the single sentence that resets a negotiation when the process drags or the fees bloat. The conversation shifts to the future of retail. Online shopping has shrunk the need for sprawling showrooms, yet manufacturers still push costly facilities while buyers increasingly compare, configure, and pre‑approve from the couch. We explore where those forces collide, what stays the same about human selling, and how service capacity becomes the quiet profit center that keeps customers loyal. Along the way, we revisit Chrysler's Iacocca era, sky‑high interest rates, brand disappearances after 2008, and why price creep has nearly erased true loss leaders. We wrap with fast‑hitting, high‑leverage tips: stack incentives the right way, verify every rebate on paper, know your exit, and keep control of your time. If you've ever felt overwhelmed under the bright lights, this conversation gives you a roadmap and the confidence to use it.Enjoyed the show? Sports cars comprise around 1% of new car sales these days, sadly. We discuss, and Steve-0 and our trauma surgeon Dr Stephan Moran pick our five favorite sports cars of all time.Trauma surgeon safety segment: For many years, Dr Moran has been advocating for better crash dummies ("They should have 20 different size and gender dummies lined up, and the tester can pick any one and put it into a car and run the test", is what he's been saying). Chinese manufacturer Geely has built a safety testing facility that can test 60 crash dummies, so finally someone out there has been paying attention and making cars safer through better crash testing. Dr Moran discusses.Stephan spots an insane Honda Accord. Us old guys think it's Fugly, but presumably "da kids" love it.Steve-0 gets into 2025 new car sales data and draws some conclusions: big pickups rule, compact crossovers and big SUVs are selling like crazy, BEVs are fading fast, and BMW is dominating the luxury market (with Lexus close behind).#carsoncallpodcast #automobile #traumasurgeonsafety #sportscar #bmw #lexus

Tom also thinks there's no sport that relies on a single player more than teams do with a quarterback. Cody Bellinger stays with the Yankees and Jose Ramirez reworked his deal with the Guardians. Tom asks if the MacKenzie Gore deal makes sense for the Rangers. Plus, how did the US car market do last year and what's coming in the future? In this episode of the Millionaire Car Salesman Podcast, Sean V. Bradley sits down with longtime industry strategist Troy Spring to discuss the evolving state of automotive advertising. With nearly four decades in the business, Troy brings a perspective shaped by experience, data, and a deep understanding of what truly moves the needle for dealerships! "I've never seen anything work better than direct mail ever." - Troy Spring From traditional marketing channels to modern digital ecosystems, the conversation explores how dealers think about their market, their budget, and the strategies that shape their advertising decisions. Sean and Troy examine the realities dealerships face today, from vendor relationships to the role of in-house marketing leadership, and why understanding your market is more important now than ever! "It's a chess match. It's not just advertising. It's about looking at everything holistically." - Troy Spring This episode challenges assumptions, reframes how dealers view their advertising spend, and offers a candid look at the mindset needed to succeed in a competitive landscape. If you're a Dealer, General Manager, marketing manager, or anyone responsible for driving traffic and generating opportunities… this is a conversation you'll want to hear firsthand! Tune in to learn how top operators are rethinking their advertising journey, and why the next evolution of automotive marketing starts with clarity, strategy, and control! Key Takeaways: ✅ Direct mail remains one of the most effective traditional advertising methods for car dealerships, often outperforming digital strategies. ✅ To optimize marketing spend, dealers need to focus on their immediate market area before expanding efforts to broader markets. ✅ Understanding and calculating the true cost-per-sale involves more than just the simple division of ad spend by cars sold. ✅ Dealerships should ensure their marketing managers have both automotive sales experience and technical knowledge in digital marketing certifications. ✅ Successful dealer strategies often include a mix of both traditional and digital marketing methods, customized to their specific market needs. About Troy Spring Troy Spring, Co-founder of Dealer World, is an automotive industry veteran with nearly 40 years of experience! He sold his first car at the age of 18 and rose quickly within the ranks to manage dealerships, including leading a four-store group as a platform manager. In 2009, Troy founded Dealer World, a boutique advertising agency specializing in driving traffic and sales strategy for car dealerships. He later co-founded Dealer Funnel, focusing on nurturing leads for better conversion rates. Known for his innovative approach and in-depth understanding of both traditional and digital automotive marketing, Troy is highly respected in the industry! Disrupting Auto Dealership Strategies: Insights from Industry Experts Key Takeaways Dealers must focus on securing their local market before venturing into new territories to maximize profitability. A holistically-managed marketing plan, customizable per dealership's needs, outperforms cookie-cutter OEM vendor solutions. Successful dealership marketing relies on understanding both traditional and digital advertising fundamentals. The Importance of Protecting Your Primary Market Area (PMA) In the fast-paced world of automotive dealerships, focusing on expansion without reinforcing the existing customer base can be a recipe for inefficiency. Sean V. Bradley, president of Dealer Synergy, suggests a foundational strategy: focus on protecting your primary market area first. Bradley asserts that many dealers overlook the rich opportunities available locally. "It's interesting," Bradley remarks, "we'll sit with a dealer, and they'll say, 'I got to go after XYZ down the street,' when they should be protecting their backyard first." This discussion highlights that the inclination to conquest rather than consolidate can lead to a dilute marketing focus. The result? Dealers potentially miss out on higher return-on-investment (ROI) opportunities domestically. Bradley's recommendation to analyze the pump-in, pump-out report is a strategic reminder to first solidify one's standing locally. This approach not only optimizes ROI but also reduces advertising costs associated with pursuing less familiar, distant markets. Taking Bradley's advice to heart, a dealership can enjoy the double benefit of deepening customer loyalty while also enhancing word-of-mouth marketing locally. Through focusing efforts on holding on to current clientele before aggressively targeting competitors', dealerships can achieve a more sustainable, profitable growth model. Crafting a Custom Marketing Strategy: Beyond OEM and Vendor Scripts Both Bradley and Troy Spring, founder of Dealer World, make compelling cases against the dependency on prescribed OEM and vendor-driven tactics. Amid the rising challenges facing automotive dealerships, they argue for a bespoke marketing strategy that's adaptable to each dealership's unique environment. Spring states, "You have to be with someone who can think holistically because if you're on with linear OEM vendors, you're just gonna get told why you should continue to do more and more of what it is that they sell." Such insights underscore the limitations of formulaic marketing solutions. While OEMs often push for uniformity—to simplify their nationwide branding and operations—dealerships must vigilantly evaluate these suggestions. Bradley underscores a critical point, proposing that dealers risk spending thousands unnecessarily on ineffective lead generation strategies because they blindly follow OEM guidance. The conversation dives into the economics of advertising. Bradley shared, "I've got a dealer group spending $70,000 on a splash page generating just a few hundred leads each month." This statistic serves as a caution against the pitfalls of not closely scrutinizing advertising expenditures versus results. It's essential for dealerships to cultivate an advertising strategy where each segment, from pay-per-click (PPC) to SEO and database marketing, functions as an integrated system rather than disparate efforts. This avoids the trap of bloated expenses disguised within bundled packages, which can negate perceived savings with reduced effectiveness. Bridging Traditional and Digital Advertising for Maximum Impact The discussion also delves into appreciating the coexistence of traditional and digital advertising within dealership marketing, which offers a nuanced approach to driving traffic. One standout revelation from Troy Spring? The effectiveness of direct mail. Although often regarded as an antiquated medium, Spring asserts, "Nothing has ever worked better than direct mail." It's a thought-provoking declaration in an era rich with digital solutions. Contrary to perceived obsolescence, traditional methods such as direct mail remain relevant, especially when optimized with the latest data analytics techniques. Properly targeted, a traditional medium can reach high potential customers directly and personally. Given the inundation of digital ads, a physical piece of mail stands out, often carrying more weight. Spring further suggests that while digital tools, like social media and search engine marketing (SEM), play critical roles in modern strategies, their effectiveness hinges heavily on their synergy with traditional advertising channels. These multifaceted campaigns leverage the strengths of both domains—ability to track and personalize digital ads with the tangible and trust-building potential of offline methods. Emphasizing on integrative approaches that couple interactive digital platforms with traditional media allows dealerships to engage in comprehensive advertising strategies personalized to consumer behavior trends. Through harmonizing these forces, a dealership's presence is effectively cemented in the market, leveraging the best aspects of each medium. A Synthesis of Strategy and Practice The insights shared by Sean V. Bradley and Troy Spring showcase a wealth of expertise in crafting dealership marketing strategies that balance innovative thinking with foundational business tenets. As dealerships navigate the complexities of an ever-evolving industry landscape, these professionals emphasize the necessity for both strategic foresight and a command over advertising mechanics. Essentially, the most adept dealerships will be those that recognize the imperative to protect their primary markets while scaling responsibly. They explore bespoke advertising solutions beyond OEM packages, integrating digital dexterity with traditional marketing. Each dollar spent should be scrutinized for its ROI, as the measure of an effective advertisement goes beyond impressions or clicks to the tangible growth it champions for the dealership. In an industry as competitive as automotive sales, this layered, integrated approach becomes the solutions beacon through transformative, modern advertising challenges.
