In this episode of All Things Wildfire, the host welcomes Chin Thammasaengsri, a long-time member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in Los Angeles. Together, they discuss the critical role CERT plays in disaster preparedness and response, focusing on wildfires, earthquakes, and other emergencies. Chin shares insights into CERT's history, its three-fold mission of self-care, family preparedness, and community support, and practical strategies to engage with neighbors and build disaster resilience. He highlights personal stories and actionable advice, emphasizing the importance of preparation, teamwork, and communication during emergencies. Key Takeaways: CERT Overview: Established in 1985 by the Los Angeles Fire Department. Aims to train civilian volunteers to support themselves, their families, and their communities during disasters. Offers practical skills in first aid, evacuation, fire suppression, search and rescue, and communication. Three Pillars of CERT Training: Self-care: Being prepared with personal emergency supplies and knowledge. Family preparedness: Ensuring immediate family members are safe and supported. Community connection: Coordinating efforts with neighbors for collective disaster response. Lessons from Wildfire and Disaster Response: The emotional toll of disasters, such as survival guilt, underscores the value of community solidarity. Evacuation planning and multiple escape routes are critical in wildfire-prone areas. Maintaining open communication channels, such as two-way radios, ensures preparedness when traditional methods fail. First Aid and Common Injuries: Glass-related injuries, broken bones, and lacerations are common after earthquakes or wildfires. Basic disaster medical training and a well-stocked first-aid kit are essential. Community Engagement: Start small by connecting with a few committed neighbors to build awareness. Use tools like flyers, educational talks, and apps like Watch Duty for wildfire alerts to foster preparedness. Encourage a culture of mutual support and proactive planning. Practical Tools: Two-way radios (FRS/GMRS) for reliable neighborhood communication. Emergency supplies such as N95 masks, first-aid kits, and evacuation plans. Show Notes: Guest: Chin Thammasaengsri, Community Emergency Response Team member. Contact Chin: Email at cert68chin@gmail.com. Resources Mentioned: Watch Duty app for wildfire alerts. CERT training programs (local fire departments or emergency management offices). American Red Cross and American Heart Association for CPR and first-aid certifications. FRS/GMRS radios available at Walmart or Best Buy. Actionable Steps for Listeners: Take CERT Training: Find a local CERT program to learn essential disaster response skills. Prepare Emergency Kits: Stock your home with first-aid supplies, N95 masks, radios, and evacuation essentials. Engage Your Community: Start conversations about disaster planning with neighbors and join or form local preparedness groups. Download Preparedness Apps: Stay informed with apps like Watch Duty for real-time wildfire alerts. Disaster preparedness starts with individual action but thrives through community collaboration. Take the time to know your neighbors, plan together, and be ready to support one another when emergencies arise. Be sure to subscribe and follow All Things Wildfire for more expert insights on protecting your property and community. Are you basing your emergency preparedness plans on outdated data and models? As the pace of natural disasters and critical events speeds up, security managers will need to readjust their procedures and succession plans to succeed, says Thomas Henkey, CEM. Also in this month's episode, sponsored by Dataminr, Paul Maguire discusses how the volume of HUMINT and OSINT available today makes corporate security intelligence challenging, especially when artificial intelligence enters the scene. To say she knows and understands the risks and needs of the field would be an understatement. Now, as the Environment, Health and Safety Director at Life Fitness, the umbrella company for six fitness brands, Katherine uses the knowledge and experience from her manufacturing days to inform her policy practices. “We use a lot of lean manufacturing tools and Six Sigma concepts in safety, just like we would in quality or operations or efficiencies,” Katherine explains on this episode of the No Accident podcast, presented by TRUCE. “We use those same tools and mindsets and kind of that continuous improvement mindset to constantly get better in the workplace around working in a safe manner.” At Life Fitness, Katherine develops and integrates company-wide standardized, proactive EHSS programs and practices through collaborative leadership. In fact, she boasts about Life Fitness’s leaders’ dedication to safety.“We had a global leadership meeting this past week and talked about safety as really being a highlight of continuous improvement and performance this year,” she says. “The CEO talked about the fact that safety is in everybody's basket. It's for everybody to be participating in affecting change around safety. So I see not only my own leadership but the leadership within the organization really being authentic.”According to Katherine, it is truly in leaders’ best interests to invest in safety as a process flow because it is just as much an investment in employees as it is in the company’s future. “[Safety] is not a cost savings; it's a cost avoidance. … [That means] being able to think about it more as a business practice — like how can I make an improvement on the safety side of things that can ultimately affect business efficiencies and quality metrics?”Featured Guest

Over his career, Ed received numerous uniformed services and civilian commendations.  He created and led the Mad as a Hatter Campaign for a Mercury-Free NIH and developed new training materials to improve awareness of the potential role of mercury contamination in promoting development of resistance to antibiotics in bacteria.  For the campaign effort, he received the American Chemical Society’s 2005 Howard Fawcett Award for outstanding contributions in chemical health and safety.  Two projects that he subsequently created and promoted while assigned to the NIH received White House GreenGov presidential awards from the Bush and Obama administrations.  In 2009, the NIH laboratory building decontamination and decommissioning process, now referred to as Sustainable High Efficiency Deconstruction (SHED) received the Closing the Circle GreenGov award for the category Seeds of Change, and in 2013 the Substances of Concern Reduction Initiative received the award for the category Sustainable Innovation. While assigned to NIH Captain Rau carried out applied research activities relating to his hazardous waste management responsibilities.  This included development of minimization and treatment methods for mixed waste (radioactive hazardous waste) and other multi hazardous waste streams generated by biomedical research activities.  Working with other NIH investigators he also devised novel apparatus and experiments to investigate the extreme resistance of prions, the agents responsible for mad cow disease, scrapie and other spongiform encephalopathies to thermal inactivation.  The apparatus simulated conditions in a medical waste incinerator and captured emissions from burning tissues containing a thermally resistant strain of scrapie.  These studies defined the extreme conditions necessary for inactivation of the agent and led Ed to propose a new theory of agent replication by means of inorganic templates.  This work was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science and co authored with Dr. Carleton Gajdusek, a Nobel Laureate and other leading prion researchers. Ed is a Registered Hazardous Substance Professional and licensed in Maryland licensed as an Environmental Health Specialist.  He holds active memberships in the American Chemical Society, National Environmental Health Association, Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals, Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council, the Cosmos Club of Washington DC, Medical Reserve Corps of the Hawaii Department of Health, and a newly formed local Community Emergency Response Team for the Discovery Harbour area of Hawaii.   Resources:Website - https://sustainablebioresources.com/

This time the GCP guys sit down with Josh from the Tacoma Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, utility safety, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. 1:24 – Justin gives a shout out to Wizard's Keep Games, gives listeners information on GCP's social media, and their new Patreon Account. They give a shout out to Castle Security and Protection, Justin talks about a recent Reddit comment on Tacoma's happening scene in the early 80's, and it's downfall in the later 80's. Jeff gives an update on the ghost activity at the Union Club he found using the I Ovilus ghost hunting app, Josh tells the guys what the Community Emergency Response Team does, and the types of training they offer. 15:31 – Josh talks about using the ‘All Hazards Approach' that CERT uses, how long it's been in place, and the variety of services they offer in the community. He talks about how he got involved, how CERT would assist if a big disaster happened, and what they train community members on in order to sustain themselves if a disaster were to happen. Justin talks about the importance of getting to know your neighbors in case of an emergency, Josh explains what the program ‘Map Your Neighborhood' does, and how a little bit of training goes a long way if a major situation were to happen. 24:35 – Josh discusses the importance for local government to provide information to people on what to do if a disaster were to happen, other ways they're expanding on how they can communicate to people in other languages in a time of disaster, and looking at other countries like Japan as an example of how they can also expand on what they're doing in terms of emergency communication. Justin expands on the importance of knowing your neighbors, Josh shares where people can find them online, and classes they have coming up. 33:45 – Conversation goes to what people should carry in their cars in case of an emergency, what Josh recommends for people to keep in their home, and what people should do with their pets in an evacuation scenario. Josh gives information on how people that want to do the training can do so, Justin talks about being involved with the ‘Safe Streets' in his community, and the group talks about the challenge to get younger people involved. Josh discusses students practicing the Lahar evacuation monthly, Puyallup's high risk of a Lahar happening if the volcano went off, and how Tacoma is built on top of mood flow from Rainier in the 1500's. Thanks Josh for stopping in for a very informative episode, we look forward to hearing the rest of the episode next week! Special Guest: Josh Shelton.
