The agricultural land market demonstrates remarkable resilience in early 2024, despite ongoing concerns about tariffs, interest rates, and commodity price fluctuations. In this information-packed episode, we dive deep into current farmland trends with special guest Jim Rothermich, "The Iowa Land Guy," who tracks every land auction in Iowa and provides crucial market insights.Rothermich reveals that Northwest Iowa continues to see premium farmland prices exceeding $20,000 per acre, driven primarily by local producers rather than outside investors. This producer-dominated market reflects the strategic importance of land acquisition beyond simple ROI calculations—farmers recognize that expansion opportunities may be once-in-a-lifetime chances. Despite rising interest rates reducing the buyer pool somewhat, most transactions still involve significant cash positions from farmers with strong balance sheets. The conversation shifts to recent auction results across several states, showcasing the tremendous range in current land values. From recreational properties selling for $3,800/acre in Pembina County, North Dakota, to premium farmland reaching $12,500/acre in Brown County, Minnesota, and multi-parcel offerings near Moorhead bringing $9,600/acre, the market demonstrates continued strength across diverse property types.Hosts Steve Link and Andy Murdock share exciting details about upcoming auctions, including a 3,000-acre ranch property in Golden Valley County and a unique 840-acre offering near Custer State Park in South Dakota featuring parcels with direct views of Mount Rushmore. The episode provides valuable perspective on market trends, buyer motivations, and what both sellers and purchasers should consider in today's dynamic land market.Discover why agricultural real estate continues to attract strong interest despite economic headwinds, and gain insights that could help you make more informed decisions about your land assets. I love to drive through Custer State Park in South Dakota. This time, we were driving through on our way to an outreach for the Lakota young people on a nearby reservation. I love the drive because, if I'm lucky, I'll get to see a lot of buffalo. I know you'll find this surprising, but seeing buffalo is one thing; riding them is another. Not that I ever have! We were with our Lakota Christian brother, and we saw some buffalo! And he said, "Ron, I know someone who rides buffalo in parades, and on holidays." And I said, "Wait a minute! Rides a buffalo?" I can't imagine boarding one of these wonderful wild animals. Somebody asked this buffalo rider, "What's it take?" Here's what he said: "Patience. If you neglect them one or two days, he won't be tamed any more." I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Buffalo Riding." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from Romans 7, beginning at verse 19. It actually talks about the buffalo - the wild animal inside you and me; a wild beast that does not want to be tamed. Verse 19, "For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do - this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it." Verse 24 Paul says, "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?" You get almost a hopeless feeling up to this point. And then suddenly, "Bam! The sun comes out." Here's the good news. "Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!" See, there's an animal inside of us that wants us to go against God. It's like the hymn writer says, "Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love." We know what God wants, and we want it too. But we keep choosing to let that part of us that is out-of-control run us. We just can't seem to tame it! But we're not without hope. There's a Savior, not only from the penalty of sin, which is huge, but from the power of sin. Romans 6:14 says, "Sin will no longer be your master." When we surrender that wild part to Jesus, He begins to tame what has always ruled us; what has always beaten us. But you don't tame it once and for all. It takes patience like the buffalo rider said. Luke 9:23 says, "Take up your cross daily and follow Me." If you neglect that buffalo - that animal inside you - one or two days, he won't be tamed any more. That sin that has beaten you, it's got to be beaten now on a 24-hour basis, 24-hour victories. I won it today. Some of us have made the mistake of thinking that big, great, one-time spiritual experience would tame the buffalo once and for all. But he keeps getting away from us; keeps riding over us. It's because we missed the daily part. If you conquer sin one day at a time, and if Jesus is the only one who can conquer it, doesn't it stand to reason you have to be with Jesus each new day. Now, you notice something that happens consistently when you miss a day or two of your time with Jesus. At least it happens to me. The dark side of me starts to surface again, re-strengthened. I start to see traits that I was seeing less of, and suddenly I start seeing more of. And so does everyone close to me. It's as if that daily surrender time with Jesus is the only dam that's holding back the parts of me I hate. You miss being with the Savior because of sin, and the sin starts to leak back in. You need a constant get-together. You need a consistent, non-negotiable time together with Jesus, where you again make Him the Lord of your stubborn sin. That's literally the margin between victory and defeat. We've all got a buffalo to tame. Let him go unattended for a couple of days, and sin will stampede right over you again. But you can ride the buffalo that has ridden you by daily turning over the reigns to the One who died to tame the animal inside you. He is the Savior. He is Jesus.

Haunted tours of the hotel offer a closer look at this Old West spirit. Homestake Opera House 313 W Main St, Lead, SD 57754 Once a grand theater during the gold rush, the Homestake Opera House is now haunted by spirits from its past, including a mysterious woman seen on stage. Visitors often hear disembodied voices and piano music playing softly through the empty theater. Devil's Gulch Garretson, SD 57030 Devil's Gulch is home to Wild West legends and tragic ghostly lovers. Visitors often hear moans and strange cries near the gorge, as well as sightings of the tragic couple standing at the edge before disappearing into the mist. Hotel Alex Johnson 523 6th St, Rapid City, SD 57701 This historic hotel is famous not only for its luxury but also for its haunted reputation. Sioux San Hospital 3200 Canyon Lake Dr, Rapid City, SD 57702 Built on the grounds of a former Native American boarding school, this hospital is said to be haunted by the spirits of children who died from illness. Their laughter and cries can still be heard in the building's abandoned wings, and shadowy figures have been spotted by staff and visitors alike. Adams House 22 Van Buren St, Deadwood, SD 57732 The Adams House is a historic mansion frozen in time, and it's said that its original owner, W.E. Adams, never left. Visitors often smell cigar smoke in the house and see the rocking chair sway on its own in Mary Adams' room. Fairmont Hotel 628 Main St, Deadwood, SD 57732 This former brothel and gambling hall is haunted by the spirit of a woman who took her life in the hotel. Guests have also encountered an aggressive male spirit who makes his displeasure with renovations known by disturbing workers and slamming doors. Gaslight Restaurant & Saloon 13490 US-16, Rockerville, SD 57702 The friendly ghost of Samuelson Harney is often seen at the Gaslight Saloon, where pieces of his old bar were brought after it was demolished. Patrons report seeing Harney greet them at the door and playing harmless pranks by moving objects around. How do I not make a few pictures? Do we have to have a purpose? Does our photography have to be serious? Is fun a sufficient excuse for pulling out the camera?

“You're experiencing what you see on TV and the old western movies, the buffalo roaming across the prairie like that. It's that old west tradition that you don't see anywhere else in the world.” – Matt Snyder, Superintendent of Custer State Park Feel the ground rumble and the dust fly as sixty cowboys and cowgirls saddle up to bring in a thundering herd of 1,300 buffalo at the 57th Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. But we're not just watching it, we are in the thick of it as we get thrown around on the back of a truck chasing the herd across the wide-open plains. Listen to one of the riders Molly as she cracks her whip and corrals the galloping beasts. We also meet Lakota rider and manager of Bear Butte State Park, Jim Jandreau, who tells us what the buffalo means to the Lakota people. At the end of the long and tiring ride we join Molly's 87-year-old dad, who had just taken part in his 53rd roundup. Along the way we discover that although the roundup harks back to a different time, the adventurous spirit of South Dakotans that has been a way of life for centuries still lives on. And that spirit is infectious. - Brian Thacker, presenter Thank you to everyone who featured on this show: - Jim Jandreau, Bear Butte State Park - Molly Olivier, Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup - Bob Lantis, Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup - Lydia Austin, Custer State Park - Kobee Stalder, Custer State Park - Matt Snyder, Custer State Park Recorded on-location, this audio adventure is designed to do more than just let you hear what it's like to be there; it's designed to let you feel what it's like for real. We go over our 3 days in South Dakota. We made our way to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, and Badlands National park! It was insanely beautiful and full of great hikes. We even saw mountain goats for the first time on our trip! There were baby goats, too, and it was so cool to see. The Badlands was an incredible grand finale to our trip! Waking up in such a stunning camping area was the best! And on our drive in, we were greeted by so many bison. We had some hot weather and got in some great hikes! It's a very fascinating place that makes for a great road trip for any Midwesterner! CLICK HERE FOR A FULL RECAP & ALL THE LINKS! Dear listeners, I have a tale for you!! It was one of the best/worst thing to happen to me delivered by our sweet Mother Nature. I had been planning a camping trip for 1 whole year with a high school buddy (who only knows me only as a metalhead, shhhhhh......). He had never been to the mid-west, in any place like South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, or Idaho. I had, but for work-related travel, which was a soul sucking endeavor and left me devoid of any potentially wonderful life altering experiences. Our plan went from imagining to planning, and would take us to The Badlands, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills, Devil's Tower, Bighorn National Forest, Yellowstone Park, and beyond. It was going to be fantastic. I bulked up some snivel camping gear and I was ready. Imagine that: me, a sissy novice camper, eating barbaric foods over a fire and having a flexible agenda while listening to nature at night in a tiny tent. What could go wrong? We didn't bother to plan more than a day in advance, just in case we liked something so much we decided to explore it more. How exciting!! The first day after flying into Rapid City, SD was the Badlands. We hiked all over it, went places where we probably should not have (including into a buffalo field about a mile's walk from our car, how very wise) and spent about 12 hours there. It was blissful! That night, we set up camp at a very basic campsite. I was awoken in the morning at about 2:30 to hear some distant thunder and some very light sprinkling that lasted about 30 minutes. Perfect. In the morning, the sweet breezes dried everything flawlessly. This is how it is all going to be. Or so I thought. After another few days, we were succeeding, and confident. Nothing could defeat us! On the 3rd night, we set up camp at a popular chain camping place with great amenities and were nice and comfortable. We didn't even bother to see if it was going to rain. Like I said before, what could go wrong? Well, yeah, dear listener, I found out how wrong it could really go for us. I was awoken that night at around 1:30, and there was a torrential downpour above us. Not only that, it sounded as though the wind was whipping at about 300 miles per hour, and massive hailstones were pummeling my tent. There were flashes of lightning that seemed like a thousand suns happening every 10 seconds and thunderclaps with deafening roars. Not gonna lie, I was extremely petrified. I could hear by buddy sneezing non-stop in his tent during it all (we were under pine trees, he has a very bad allergy) that multiplied my fear because I knew that the end is near! It lasted for 2 hours, and I buried my head within my sleeping bag and wondering why I thought that it was wise to sleep under a lightning rod, uh, I mean a tree, and planning my escape to the car at a moment's notice if needed. Dear listeners, I was relegated to the fetal position and turning back into the sissy camper that I really was. I was indeed back at square one. When we woke in the morning, we had to carefully pack (after shaking out) all of our drenched gear and drove 5 hours to a hotel that was gracious enough to permit usage of a private room in which to completely dry out our gear. Dear listener, I made promise to Mother Nature that I would use my fortune of survival against the elements to create a session in the volume of the Camping Under The Stars series. I could only happily oblige. Even though Mother Nature can be comforting and offer serenity and peace, she also exists to put us in our places. She provides a balance of awareness, and offers us sanctuary. Remain cognizant of her beauty and power, respect her intentions, use this session to overcome your challenges, and invigorate your senses with monumental breakthroughs. Make the time to exercise your new mental awareness and gain a new appreciation and respect for Mother Nature in all of her beauty. Shameless plug time!! The very last song is an original song of mine that will be released on an upcoming album (waiting on one last song to be mastered). You can find my music at https://www.tonepoet-music.com Another very last thing, I did record a few sounds from this crazy camping trip and posted them to the app White Noise (I'm not affiliated with them, and I'm not endorsing anything, I just use the app). You can find those sounds HERE. There were many exciting things at this year's National Western Stock Show, but one of the highlights was the group meeting up on the side pens of the Event Center. The Bison people were there in force, and the critters they came with stole the show, even if it was 25 degrees and snowing. Especially since it was that cold, because in the frigid air the already impressive and feisty beasts were breathing out steam from their nostrils like something out of The Hobbit. Today, we're sharing a conversation we had with Chad Kremer, President of the National Bison Association, Herd Manager for Custer State Park in South Dakota, long-time bison ranch owner, and title holder of the National Western's Most Interesting Mustache. He was also a super nice guy, and a true representative of All Things Good about South Dakota. After speaking with him, it looks like another roundup might be in our filming future -- Buffalo style, so it looks like we're going back.Done with capitals yet? Wild, Wooly, and Untamed. With that, we'll put our foot down (but gently)(And as a side note – how many people can legitimately say they're president of the NBA? How cool is that?) South Dakota is far more than harsh winters and endless prairie. The western part of the state is full of exciting things to do and see: Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills, fossil digs, Badlands National Park, and so much more. But if you plan a trip there, you should put at the top of your list Badlands Observatory. This amazing night sky destination is located in Quinn, South Dakota, only a few miles from Badlands National Park. It's owned by Ron Dyvig and Teresa Hofer who join me in this episode to talk about their special slice of heaven under the stars. Visit NightSkyTourist.com/57 for more information about this episode. This week, we head back to Custer State Park, which rivals most national parks for beauty and recreation. We talk about what the roads might look like this Thanksgiving, and why some overbearing leaf-blowing has us sneezing.
In and outside of the loyalty and reward points and miles space, there's plenty of talk about "free" travel, almost all of which doesn't end up to actually be free travel. In short, so many people omit details and costs that negate exactly what they claim to be promoting. I like to create goals, and one goal that lingers every time I'm ready to create a new trip somewhere, is to travel for free - free as in no out of pocket expense. This episode is about a pretty cool road trip that culminates in a summary of an example of a free trip. As an early birthday gift to my friend, we flew then drove around and across Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Minnesota in mid-September. This is our trip: Alaska Airlines flight, MSP -> SEA -> FCA (Kalispell, MT) Kalispell (MT) Glacier National Park (MT) Big Sky (MT) Yellowstone National Park (MT, WY) Beartooth Pass Scenic Highway (MT) Devils Tower (WY) Deadwood (SD) Mount Rushmore (SD) Wall Drug (SD) Delta-09 Missile Silo (SD) Badlands National Park (SD) We hit just about everything we could in the 6 days that we had for our road trip. The only other things that I can think of along our journey that would have been nice to see are Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming and Custer State Park in South Dakota. Each of those would take some time, and in the case of Grand Teton, likely a significant amount of time that we really didn't have. Even with wildfires all around us and Covid still going strong, we managed to have a nice trip. Part of how I overcame extra expenses on this trip was through the Dosh app. It's pretty simple, just plug in the credit cards that you use most and cash back posts to your account after purchases. Please use my code for Dosh (https:/link.dosh.cash/JEFFREB113) if you don't already have and use it! Thanks for listening and enjoy!

The woman was at Fort Custer State Park in South Dakota taking the picture when a different bison decided she was too close. The animal charged her, catching her belt on its horn, and flung her around before her pants fell off and she fell to the ground. After the animal retreated people rushed to help. The woman was flown to a hospital and had serious injuries. State park officials are reminding visitors to stay at least 100 feet away from bison. Custer State Park is one of our favorite parks to visit in the fall and the bison are part of the draw. To see our list, click here. Illegal boondockers near California's Big Sur leaving behind big mess With warm weather and totally booked campgrounds, officials near California's Big Sur have experienced problems with people illegally camping along Highway 1 over the past several weekends. More than 150 people illegally camped along Highway 1 in Monterey County last weekend, generally in turnouts. And they leave behind human waste, toilet paper, beer cans and coals from fires. Officials are closing several roads through Oct. 19 to stop the illegal boondocking. We are big fans of boondocking, but ALWAYS clean up after yourself, and check to see if boondocking is allowed before settling in for the night. For more boondocking tips click here or here. Who doesn’t love an end-of-summer road trip? Few activities compare to the joy of packing a duffel bag full of stuff, filling the snack bag with Cheez-Its and animal crackers, and heading down the open road with all of your cares in the rearview mirror. It’s even better when you have a theme. In this episode, we talk about a buffalo-themed road trip we took across the northern plains states to some national and state parks where we visited as many public bison herds as we could fit into two weeks. Probably the most iconic American mammal is the bison, or buffalo as it’s colloquially called. They’re nearly synonymous with Yellowstone National Park, but there’s another, better place to see them. One where traffic jams rarely occur every time one meanders by. It’s also a bit easier for most Americans to get to and every bit as beautiful: the Black Hills of South Dakota. This week, the Great Buffalo Roundup at South Dakota’s Custer State Park.

A married mother of two and an ICU nurse, Kathy talks all about how she and her husband decided to sell their home in North Bend, WA to travel around the states in an RV for a year. Kathy gets really personal about how motherhood challenged her and her need for some serious change. So, Kathy, Leland and their two young kids set out on a great adventure. She has some incredible stories, amazing gems of places to see such as the Channel Islands off of Ventura to Custer State Park and advice on how to actually make this work! After a year on the road, Kathy and her family settled on their new location of Durango, Colorado where she is working as a nurse and Leland is busy with his vintage car repair business. This week on RV Miles, we begin our tour of the stunning Black Hills region of South Dakota. We cover the simply massive Custer State Park, including its wildlife, and a unique annual event - the Buffalo Roundup, where more than 1300 wild bison are herded into corrals by cowboys and cowgirls for health checkups. We'll also take you on some amazing scenic drives — the Needles Highway, which spins through hairpin and pigtail turns, as well as 8' wide tunnels through the magnificent needle spires of the Black Hills, as well as the Iron Mountain Road, full of scenic vistas and striking views of Mount Rushmore. All that, plus some RV-related news items, a listener question, a new brain teaser, and more!
We sit down with Custer State Park's Bison Herd Manager, Chad Kremer and Interpretive Manager, Lydia Austin and talk about the upcoming Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup!
Janice is feeling something she hasn't felt since before her cancer year: is it… relaxed? Having spent the day visiting sites in the Black Hills, she's found a level of calm she hasn't felt in a long time. It's well deserved. And speaking of those sites, it was an amazing day visiting Crazy Horse (another mountain they're blowing up into a sculpture but it's taking a lot longer), driving through Custer National Park (BISON BABY ALERT. BISON BABY ALERT), and taking the Needles Highway. What's the Needles Highway you ask? Janice and Dan didn't know either, but it turns out it is amazing provided that you: (a) know the width of your car in advance (b) know the height of your car and (c) don't almost run out of gas before you've climbed the whole thing. If you don't know those things, it's maybe a little stressful. But potentially getting the car wedged in a 9' wide tunnel or running out of gas at the top of a mountain isn't going to stop Janice from reaching that perfect state of calm-bilibrium.
I climbed to the top of Black Elk Peak and I was inspired. The inspiration came from a place that I didn’t expect. I expected to be inspired by the scenery and beauty of Custer State Park. That was definitely worth the effort and time. However, the people I met along the journey is what I will take away as inspiration. A large number of people willing to challenge themselves. To do something that allows them to continue living fully.
