Delve into the fierce debate over abortion rights in the U.S. and how recent measures could alter the course of reproductive freedom. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: The 2022 Supreme Court ruling to overturn Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health dramatically changed the political scene. Still, just two years on, we are witnessing another watershed moment in the struggle for abortion rights. This Election Day, 10 states will vote on whether to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution. Since 2022, every ballot measure to protect abortion rights has passed while every measure to restrict or weaken those rights has failed. Meanwhile, extremist Republicans are pushing for a total national abortion ban and seem to have Trump on their side. He told Fox News just days ago that a national abortion ban is “off the table,” but “we'll see what happens.” Joining us to share what's at stake and what can be done are Nadine Smith, the director of Equality Florida who heads the state's largest organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Heidi L. Sieck is a Political Strategist & Founder of VOTEPROCHOICE that focuses on reproductive freedom at the state and local levels. And Renee Bracey Sherman, a reproductive justice advocate is the co-author of the just-released book, “LIBERATING ABORTION: Claiming Our History, Sharing Our Stories, and Building the Reproductive Future We Deserve.” Together they unpack how abortion, access to trans health, contraception and freedom from sterilization abuse are all part of the far Right's agenda to control bodies. Could reproductive rights leap forward in 2024, not back? Plus a commentary from Laura.“. . . Just last month we had the Gender Liberation March in DC . . . We had a tent for banned books because as they're banning sex ed, as they're banning trans youth healthcare, trans healthcare and abortion, they're also banning books . . . It's the same people. They're just fighting about a different thing on a different day. And so when we come together, we'll be able to stand against them.” - Renee Bracey Sherman“We have to remember that this is an infrastructure investment issue . . . For decades, the money on the anti-choice side has been going to investments in these local infrastructure. We don't operate like that on the progressive and political Democratic side. Most of our investments are going into the federal infrastructure, and that is the problem.” - Heidi L. Sieck“The governor in Florida has been so extreme. He has sent investigators to people's homes for signing the petition that got the constitutional amendment on the ballot that would restore access to abortion in Florida . . . He's threatening television stations that run ads that are in support of the abortion ballot measure.” - Nadine SmithGuests:• Renee Bracey Sherman: Co-Author Liberating Abortion; Founder & Co-Executive Director, WeTestify• Heidi L. It's quite possibly the most important election in our lifetimes — and yet some Americans may forgo voting this November. Both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have serious problems. How do we square the contradictions when casting our vote, and how should we think about elections altogether? As National Director of the Working Families Party (WFP), Maurice “Moe” Mitchell is interacting with voters on the ground and supporting candidates who've come out for a ceasefire in Gaza. The WFP's bottom-up, third party approach is winning. What is he seeing and what is his advice in this critical election year? For starters, he says “supporting a candidate is a chess move. It's not a valentine”. He joins Laura Flanders and returning co-host Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, Senior Minister at Middle Church in New York City, to break it all down. All that, plus a commentary from Laura.“The Working Families Party is a political party that is building power for working class people of all races. We believe in a country for the many, not the few. We believe that in a democracy the people should govern, not corporations and the wealthy. And the way that we do it is we're building a bottom-up, third-party approach.” - Maurice “Moe” Mitchell“Some of us are not listening . . . [Trump] intends to join a fascist campaign . . . If we're thinking of the long game, we have to ask ourselves which of these candidates has the most propensity to help us build a movement for the 20 years that we need to, or for seven generations.” - Rev. Hello Decisive Series Subscribers,Roberto Ingram your podcast host and producer here, I'm thrilled to bring you yet another insightful conversation with a remarkable artist shaping the landscape of electronic music. Today, we have the privilege of delving into the world of Jan Kincl, a Croatian DJ, record producer, remixer, engineer, and live performer whose work has captured the attention and admiration of audiences worldwide. International media placed Jan among "the most interesting voices coming from the region", and his debut album, a deeply jazz-informed house record "In Plain Sight" recorded with a French keyboard player Regis Kattie, got described as “one of the most significant pieces of regional contemporary dance music” with support from Laurent Garnier, Derrick Carter, Alton Miller, Jazzanova, Volcov, Tony Humphries, Lefto, Claude Young, Jimpster, DJ Bone, Mark Grusane, Kai Alcé and many more.“An amazingly beautiful album! Very deep.” - Claude Young“The funk's all over this project!” - Kai Alcé“Superb deepness!” - Laurent GarnierBorn and raised in Zagreb, Jan is a product of the late 90s clubbing scene emerging in Croatia. A then-teenager, who embraced the music of the Motor City as a teacher has grown into a recognizable presence in the regional music life. Today, Jan is equally recognized for the music crafted in his Cycle studio, and life-long dedication to the art of DJing. Influenced equally by jazz and hi-tech jazz, he is devoted to a more traditional way of presenting music and feels more aligned with artists not limited by genres or eras. New, old, fast, slow, soulful, or rough. For Jan, the juxtaposition of all this is what DJing is about.Even though the majority of his work is dance music, this broad approach allowed him to operate in different scenes. Remix for a Brazilian legend Ivan Mamão Conti (Azymuth) on the legendary Far Out Recordings, remixes for a German jazz-funk band Key Elements on Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv label, a solo 12” under CVER alias on Oye Black Label, and a track on Deep Inspiration Show Records' ‘Family Things Volume 1' all came out in a period of a single year. The last project to hit 2020, though, were reinterpretations of Radojka Sverko's ‘Kud Plovi Ovaj Brod', a special 50th-anniversary re-release of a 1970 chanson classic which holds a unique place in Croatian music folklore. In 2021, Jan is continuing the string of releases for BBE Records, PDV Records, Get Physical, and Deep Inspiration Show Records. On top of that, a debut record from Cycle Records, his recently launched label, is coming out. Titled "For A Minute", a 12" features two of Jan's original versions, and two remixes from a Chicago house legend Gene Hunt.In parallel with working on his own music, Jan's had a decade-long run lecturing on the subject of ‘History of Electronic Music' at the Music & Sound department of United Pop Academy, still ongoing, and is running CYCLE - a studio, and music production company based in Zagreb.Contact us here to book Jan for a DJ show, live performance, or lecture/workshopJoin us next time for another episode of the Decisive podcast series, where we'll continue to explore the stories and sounds shaping the world of music today. What are the consequences? That question is at the core of “Wealth Supremacy: How the Extractive Economy and the Biased Rules of Capitalism Drive Today's Crises”, the new book from Marjorie Kelly. There's too much financial wealth in our system, she says, yet capitalism encourages us to keep scaling up, building our portfolios and maximizing profits. Like white supremacy, wealth supremacy is both entirely obvious and oddly hidden. But it shows up everywhere, and it's brought us to a deadly brink. What is to be done? As you'll hear in the episode, meaningful conversations about wealth supremacy can help us shift away from capitalism and imagine better economic models. Tune in as Marjorie Kelly and Laura Flanders do just that. Marjorie Kelly is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Democracy Collaborative and a longtime business observer. Her book is out now via Berrett-Koehler Press.“. . . Big capital is out there right now buying water rights . . . Communities are saying no . . . water needs to be declared a public trust. You have these two completely different worldviews, which really show us we can have a financialized world or we can have a democratic world . . .” - Marjorie Kelly“White supremacy and wealth supremacy are entirely entangled and you can't solve for racial equity without also looking at this wealth inequity. It hits people of color hardest, but it's hitting all of us, including the planet.” - Marjorie KellyGUEST: Marjorie Kelly: Distinguished Senior Fellow, The Democracy Collaborative; Author, Wealth Supremacy: How the Extractive Economy and the Biased Rules of Capitalism Drive Today's Crises Full Episode Notes are located HERE.

It's Island Night on Global Ginga! There is an "island" element in today's episode that I hope will leave you mesmerized. To our local listeners, the best part is that you can watch these artists live here on our Stanford campus! Small Island Big Song is a music, film, live project featuring over a hundred musicians across 16 island nations of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, creating a contemporary and relevant musical statement of a region in the frontline of cultural and environmental challenges. The album & film were composed, recorded, shot and overdubbed in nature, on the artists' custodial land. The 2022 tour shares their new album "Our Island!" Drawing on a roster of respected first nation islander artists, the concert features musicians performing irresistible oceanic grooves to soulful island ballads. Combining music, spoken word and live cinema with AV projections featuring footage collected during a 3-year film trip across 16 countries guided by the artists on their homelands. They will be here on Feb 9th! Nella is a new voice hailing from the island of Margarita in Venezuela. She graduated from Berklee College of Music to immediately become the winner of the 2019 Latin GRAMMY® Award for Best New Artist. That same year, her full-length debut, Voy (I Go) written and produced by Javier Limón for Casa Limón Records, received acclaim from NPR and yielded the hit “Me Llaman Nella” (They Call Me Nella) which surpassed 1.4 million Spotify streams and 1.4 million views on YouTube. In addition, the title track was named the 14th best song of 2019, in any genre, by the New York Times. Nella's music is a meeting place for the folklore roots of her native Venezuela, contemporary influences, and the music of Andalusia, Spain. At the beginning of 2020 Nella signed with Sony Music Records and released her new album “Doce Margaritas” on 2021 which you can hear on today's episode of Global Ginga. You will also hear "Me Llaman Nella," her signature hit, "Volaré," her 2022 release with Pedro Capo, plus a couple of songs more from her Voce Margaritas album and the single, Mi Guitarra, a sweet bolero with Juan Luis Guerra. I finish off with an album by World renowned BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson, Gilles Peterson, on Far Out Recordings, released initially on vinyl in 2009. A bit of jazz, funk, soul and electronic. World renowned BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson compiles a spectacular collage mix tape from the vaults of Far Out Recordings for this fifteenth anniversary celebration. A close friend to Joe Davis for 25 years, Gilles Peterson has been a constant supporter of the original and best UK based Brazilian record label. The pair released the original ‘Brazilika' compilation on Gilles' Talking Loud label 15 years ago and now go full circle with the fourth installment in Far Out's series following block party mixes from Kenny Dope, 4 Hero and Andy Votel. Brazilian music aficionados Peterson and Davis introduced a new generation to the cream of Brazil's bossa and post-bossa artists and here expertly blend the timeless with the new breed from Far Out's vast catalogue. Gilles Peterson's ‘Brazilika' includes five exclusive unreleased tracks and is the definitive collection of Far Out's work, taking us on a breathless ride through a beautiful and barmy Brazil. Stretch the circle wider! There are many music genres and artists coming to Stanford from all corners of the world! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/global-ginga/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/global-ginga/support

Welcome everyone to another episode of the Decisive Podcast Series, the first for this month of December and I hope you all are in positive spirits as we get closer to the Christmas Holidays Season 2020. Today you get a great program with a lot of interesting topic information about recording, production, studio gear, plugins, not to forget an in depth conversation about my experienced guest Jan Kincl Cycle Zagreb PDV Records, Far Out Recordings, Oye Black Label. Jan Kincl is a Zagreb-born house and techno dj, producer, live act performer, radio host and a party promoter. Through almost two decades in all this, it's hard to scratch the surface of electronic music in Croatia without coming across something he's been involved with. Raised by the music of Motor City, Jan's sound is a combination of house and techno, unmistakably rooted in the more organic and soulful side of it. In recent years, Jan's forays into jazz became deeper, and in 2016 resulted in a collaboration with a French keyboard player Regis Kattie. The pair quickly became one of the most prominent regional acts and their debut album, a deeply jazz-informed house record 'In Plain Sight' got described as “one of the most significant pieces of regional contemporary dance music”; with Laurent Garnier, Jazzanova, Volcov, Tony Humphries, Lefto, Claude Young and Kai Alce amongst its supporters.Jan Kincl - Decisive Podcast Tracklist01. Delicate, aromatic, and easy to prepare, Pesto Alla Trapanese is a slight variation of the Genoa traditional one, with almonds, tomatoes, and pecorino instead of Parmigiano and pine nuts.In the mix: penne rigate, basil, Roma tomatoes, raw almonds, pecorino cheese, garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper. Also, this time we need a mixer too... or the traditional mortar, if you got one. Of course, paired with the freshest music selection from yours truly. Aloha people!

Jazz It Up !!! radioshow #221 - 09.02.2016 by Simone Vimercati An eclettic mix of new, old and classic sounds with no time and one common thing: Jazz Music. This is the aim of "Jazz It Up !!!". A selection where Jazz is mixed but without borders and limits of time and genres, which often bring this music to be a niche's phenomenon for experts and purists. During this appointment, I give you a cocktail of pleasant and good quality music that goes from instrumental to vocal jazz, from soul to funky, from latin to rare grooves or new electric sounds. This is also to show everybody that jazz is not a musical genre, but a style, an attitude to express ourselves through the music. This attitude keeps on evolving and it has no limits. It is a music that embraces many listeners' generations: from the youngest, who can discover the past's giants through new artists, to the the eldest who will get amazed by listening to the music's evolution of jazz, soul and funk. I wish you a good listening: let you cherish by "Jazz It Up !!!". "Jazz It Up !!!" radioshow is available through radios, web radios, platforms for streaming on-demand and podcast.
