Welcome back to Part 34 of our series with Dr. John G. Turner! Today we are covering most of Chapter 27 in John Turner's new book Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet. The chapter is called “Deep Water” and covers the year 1843.The main topic for today is polygamy.Join us as we discuss several of Joseph Smith's wives such as Flora Woodworth, Eliza R. Snow, Sarah Ann Whitney, Lucy Walker, etc. John Dehlin challenges Dr. John Turner on specific aspects such as whether Emma Smith really did push Eliza R. Snow down the stairs and whether or not Porter Rockwell did actually attempt to assassinate Lilburn Boggs. We also discuss the validity of the William Clayton journals and postulate on why the church has yet to publish them.Throughout 1843, Joseph Smith promised men and women salvation based on their willingness to enter into polygamy. He spent church funds on gifts for his wives, as well as buying some of them plots of land, and even travel expenses for some of the women (from England to Nauvoo). Joseph Smith used language that could be seen as coercive, for example, telling Lucy Walker that polygamy was a command of God and that he would give her “until tomorrow to decide this matter [of polygamy] and that “If you reject this message the gate will be closed forever against you.”In this episode we tackle hard questions such as: Can people who do bad things also be good? Does good behavior negate seemingly abusive actions? Are people all bad and all good? Can Joseph Smith's actions be seen as human trafficking? This chapter in Mormonism is deeply problematic and disturbing, but Dr. John Turner handles it amazingly.Let us know your thoughts on a Brigham Young series (comprising ten episodes) covering John Turner's book Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet. If you'd like to help keep this project going, please consider donating to support this series here. In his official 1838 history, Joseph Smith described discovering the golden plates inside a carefully constructed stone box in the Hill Cumorah. According to his account, the box contained the plates, the Urim and Thummim, and a breastplate. But what happened to that stone box?In this episode of LDS Discussions, we take a deep dive into the historical record surrounding the stone box narrative. We compare Joseph Smith's 1838 history with earlier and later accounts, statements from witnesses like David Whitmer, Martin Harris, and Oliver Cowdery, and later retellings from leaders such as Brigham Young. We explore:-What Joseph Smith said was inside the box-Whether early Saints believed there was MORE than one box-Claims about swords, the Liahona, and other Nephite artifacts-The evolution of the story over time-Whether codex-style plates create anachronistic problems-The “magic worldview” shared by early Mormon leaders-Comparisons to treasure-digging culture-Why there is no physical evidence of the stone box todayWe also examine 19th century newspaper references discussing the stone box, Whitmer's later (contradictory) interviews, and the strange disappearance of a stone structure that supposedly survived for over a thousand years. If the box was real and physically constructed with stone slabs and pillars –as described –why did it leave no trace? Why didn't believers preserve fragments the way people took pieces of the Berlin Wall? And why does the Hill Cumorah today appear completely undisturbed? This episode wrestles with a central question: Does the detail of a stone box strengthen Joseph Smith's credibility –or create new historical and epistemological problems? This is Episode 71 in our LDS Discussions series!___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. John got hung up in the recent storms and was trapped at various airports so thankfully - democratic strategist Max Burns jumped in last minute and helped out. Max Burns takes the reins diving into Trump's recent comments about Cuba, where he mistakenly claims the island is not in a hurricane zone. This absurdity sets the tone for a discussion filled with political satire and insights. Then, joining Max is Salt Lake City Council member Ava Lopez Chavez, who brings to light the alarming news that the Department of Homeland Security has secretly negotiated a deal to turn a warehouse in Salt Lake City into one of the nation's largest immigrant detention camps. Ava passionately discusses the implications of this deal, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in government actions that affect local communities. As the conversation unfolds, veteran journalist Brian Karam joins to provide his perspective on the ongoing chaos in Washington. He highlights the dysfunction within Congress and the alarming shift towards voter suppression tactics, particularly through the proposed Save America act. Brian's insights shed light on the potential consequences of these actions for American democracy and the urgent need for civic engagement.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Eliza R. Snow is perhaps the woman in our Relief Society history who we hear the most about, and for good reason. She was a writer, organizer, temple worker, and advocate for women. She was an accomplished teacher and encouraged fellow sisters to overcome fears of public speaking and to minister to each other and their communities. She was a force for good whose influence extends to us today. During this month where we celebrate the birthday of the Relief Society, we're learning how we can continue her legacy by standing for truth with bold faith, encouraging one another through our words and actions, and ministering and teaching as the Savior would. Today's guest, Jenny Reeder, works for the Church History Department on historic sites. She has a PhD in American history from George Mason University and a Masters degree in editing documents. She's also a writer, and wrote First: The Life and Faith of Emma Smith and was head historian and editor of At the Pulpit: 185 Years of Discourses by Latter-day Saint Women. Most recently, she was head historian and editor of Rise Up and Speak: Selected Discourses of Eliza R. Snow. Notes: Local to Salt Lake City? Hear more from Jenny Reeder at this special event. Wednesday, March 18, at the downtown Salt Lake Deseret Book store, gather with historians from the Church History Department to discuss the bold teachings of Eliza R. Snow captured in the new book, Rise Up and Speak. Discover how this inspiring 19th-century leader helped found the Relief Society, Young Women, and Primary organizations—and learn why her call for Church members to speak up still resonates today. Stay for a Q&A and meet and greet. Click the link to claim your free ticket! Read the book! Rise Up and Speak: Selected Discourses of Eliza R. Snow.
2 Corinthians 10:1-18 - Speaker: Lukus Counterman - In the final section of 2 Corinthians, Paul shifts gears. But it feels like he does it without using the clutch. In chapters 8-9 he was talking about generosity and abounding grace. But in chapters 10-13 the tone feels heavy and a bit foreboding. Paul is trying to vindicate his apostolic authority and convince the church to deal with dangerous imposters who are promoting false doctrine. Rainbows and lollipops are exchanged for weapons and warfare. Things get serious rather suddenly. But all of this is because Paul knows that the good of the church and the glory of God are at stake. So, may the Lord lead us in discernment and discipline.
Reposted from They Did What?!, which you can find now or very soon at: https://podcastica.com/podcast/they-did-what — In this episode, Kelsey and Gen discuss the Netflix 2026 documentary Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart that revisits the 2002 abduction of Elizabeth Smart from her home in Salt Lake City and the nine months she spent in captivity before being recovered alive. Drawing on Elizabeth's accounts, new interviews, news coverage from the time, and law-enforcement records, the documentary examines how the case quickly became a national media story and how early assumptions shaped both public perception and investigative priorities. Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart details a series of misjudgments by law enforcement and focuses on the efforts and experiences of Elizabeth's family, who continued to push the search forward when progress stalled. Rather than retelling the crime itself, the documentary examines how the case was handled, how it was reported, and how those choices affected both the investigation and the public response. In this episode of the Eastmans Journal Podcast Edition, Ike Eastman sits down with Tim Lesser of Leupold at the Western Hunt Expo in Salt Lake City to talk about optics, innovation, and the technology behind the gear serious hunters rely on. Leupold has been building optics for more than 120 years, and their reputation for durability and trust in the field didn't happen by accident. Ike and Tim dive into what makes a high-performance rifle scope, how optics are engineered, and why reliability matters when you're miles deep in the mountains chasing a once-in-a-lifetime tag. Tim breaks down the science behind modern optics—including light transmission, magnification ratios, and the surprising complexity inside a rifle scope. They also discuss how Leupold stress-tests their gear to survive extreme recoil, harsh environments, and real-world hunting conditions. The conversation also covers Leupold's newest technology, including the NEW BX-6 Range HD binoculars, advanced ballistic features, and how integrated mapping and pin-drop technology can help hunters track animals and navigate the field with precision. Beyond gear, Ike and Tim explore a bigger topic: where technology meets hunting ethics. As innovations like thermals and drones change the landscape of modern hunting, they discuss where the line should be drawn and how companies like Leupold think about responsible innovation. If you've ever wondered what really separates high-end optics from the rest—or what goes on inside the engineering labs of one of America's most trusted optics brands—this is a conversation you don't want to miss.

What's the fastest way for a church to start following Satan rather than Christ? Stop talking about him, and stop treating him as a real being with a real agenda. In a 2021 speech to Awaken Church in Salt Lake City, Charlie describes how Satan tempts believers, how he tricks and lures people to stray away from the truth, and how to overcome him with the assistance of Christ and the Spirit. Homelessness is one of the major issues that cities like Chicago are trying to solve. The state of Utah is planning to build a 16-acre homeless campus on the outskirts of Salt Lake City, where unhoused people with mental illnesses or addiction issues could be sheltered and in some cases involuntarily committed. This controversial idea is the brainchild of conservative think tanks, and it's one that's very much being embraced by the Trump administration and the Utah legislature. City Cast CEO David Plotz talks with City Cast Salt Lake podcast host Ali Vallarta about how this plan is meant to work, the concerns about forced institutionalization, and why the state is pushing for this even though it goes against the recommendations of local experts and service providers. In June 2011, two‑year‑old October “Toby” Perez was rushed to a Salt Lake City hospital with catastrophic injuries—injuries prosecutors later said were the result of months of hidden abuse inside a cramped Great Falls, Montana home. Her mother's boyfriend, David Wayne Hyslop, was soon charged with deliberate homicide, a crime that would expose alarming failures in the systems meant to protect vulnerable children. 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 - Speaker: Lukus Counterman - In 2 Corinthians 9:6-15, Paul concludes his address concerning the famine relief fund for believers in Jerusalem. For two chapters he has been talking about generous giving. But as he wraps things up, he wants to make sure that generous giving is connected to the Generous One. You see, intimacy with God is what fuels generosity towards others. So, as we conclude this segment of scripture on giving, let's take some time to evaluate whether God is at the center of our generosity. May he help us understand what he loves, what he enables, and what brings him glory as we look to his word this weekend.

On March 18, 2020, the ground literally shook in Salt Lake City, causing the trumpet to fall from the hand of the Angel Moroni. It was a physical wake-up call for a spiritual reality: our world—and our faith—will be shaken. The question isn't if the earthquake is coming, but whether your foundation is built on something that cannot be moved. Summary: In this episode, we answer the "Why" of the "Finding Faith" course, exploring the deep symbolism of earthquakes in scripture to see why this kind of "shaking" is meant to symbolize life in the last days. Drawing from Revelation 6 and the "sixth seal," we analyze the nature of spiritual instability and the divine purpose behind the "shaking." The Sixth Seal: We dive into the apocalyptic imagery of mountains moving and the heavens departing as a scroll. Who shall be able to stand when everything familiar is displaced? The Salt Lake Earthquake: We reflect on the 2020 seismic event as a metaphor for the "shaking" of our modern institutions and personal certainties. The Purpose of Shaking: Using Hebrews 12:27, we discuss how God allows the shaking to remove things that are temporary so that "those things which cannot be shaken may remain." Building on Bedrock: We learn the difference between sand and rock, and how to ensure our "spiritual architecture" is built to withstand the "spectres of the mind". Finding Power in the Night: We conclude with the hope that faith isn't just found in the light, but is forged and strengthened in the darkness of the "shake."

On an evening in March 1974, an investigator in Salt Lake City, Utah sat across an interrogation table from a man who claimed he had psychic powers. The deputy had been skeptical… but now this self-described psychic was giving him a bunch of incredibly specific visions about the case. It was enough to make the deputy wonder… was this man really a psychic, or was he actually the killer? In this episode of Mormon Stories Podcast, we speak with Christopher Jenkins, a former LDS bishop, about his personal experience with the Church's abuse hotline. While serving as bishop in Washington, a ward member confessed abuse to him. When Christopher called the Church's hotline for guidance, he says he was told he was not a mandatory reporter and felt pressured not to report the abuse to authorities.Christopher walks us through both calls he made to the hotline, the legal framing of the guidance he received, and the lack of follow-up afterward. He also discusses broader issues surrounding clergy confidentiality, how reporting requirements vary by jurisdiction, and what he perceived as the Church's focus on institutional liability rather than victim care.We also explore how he now views mandatory reporting laws, the Church's opposition to certain reporting requirements in Washington, and larger questions about abuse prevention, bishop training, and accountability. Christopher shares how this experience, along with navigating life as the father of LGBTQ+ children, contributed to significant shifts in his faith. This conversation centers on leadership responsibility, ethical decision-making, and what happens when institutional guidance conflicts with personal conscience.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.
