Why is the Government Shutdown?

On episode 99 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum talk shutdowns, Bad Bunny at the super bowl, and a new directive from Trump to go after “domestic terrorists.” Republicans and Democrats are once again at an impasse on the budget, meaning the federal government is officially shut down. Democrats are making a stand over health care. The Trump administration is threatening to use the shutdown to enact more cuts and layoffs. Our hosts outline what’s at risk and predict what comes next. Puerto Rican super star Bad Bunny has been tapped to perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show amidst a direct assault on the Hispanic community by ICE and the federal government. It recalls Kendrick Lamar’s politically charged performance last year. Do these performances have an impact, and if so, what is it? Why isn’t the media covering NSPM-7? In what could be the biggest change to national security since the Patriot Act, President Trump has directed the FBI, the IRS, and other federal agencies to go after domestic “terrorists.” Non-profits that support progressive causes and shows like ours could now face terrorism charges for “fomenting political violence.” This is probably the biggest underreported story of the year! Missed a stop? We've got you. This season's recap rewinds our best moments. Join hosts Mitti and Michelle as they recall tales of haunted nights aboard the Queen Mary, close encounters near Area 51, a record-breaking birder who can hoot like an owl, the rhinestone sparkle of Portland's 8 Seconds Rodeo, and the cuddly joys of goat yoga. Along the way, they share listener shout-outs, unexpected lessons, and a few dream guests they're already plotting for season three. (Kendrick Lamar, call us.) Best-of hits:  Spooky stays debate: Michelle vows never to sleep in a former hospital; Mitti would (barely) choose staying in an ex-morgue over risking Scary Mary's chilling grip in Skagway, Alaska. Alien encounters: From the UFO episode, Laura Krantz's creepy run-in at Area 51's gate and the mysterious Black Mailbox letters. Chef Preeti Mistry's real talk: Rethinking food as personal storytelling; plus a dash of spicy Top Chef tea. Bird-nerd joy: Noah Strycker's pitch-perfect pygmy-owl call and beginner-friendly ID tips. Black rodeo boom: Ivan McClellan's Eight Seconds—packed arenas and high-style Western flair. Mitti's already planning her outfit for the next one. Cheese Trail nibbles: Goat cuddles, Cougar Gold in a can, and Monterey Jack's unscrupulous origin story. Upcoming travels: Michelle's saying yes to oddball stops (barefoot hike near Flagstaff, Arizona) and plotting a trip to Belize or Portugal; Mitti's off to Jordan and a Rocky Mountaineer rail trip. Listener love: Michelle's dad's texts, DMs from fans, and special mailbag moments. Via Podcast is a production of AAA Mountain West Group.

The Psychology Behind Why Artists Create Fake Conflicts in 2025

Hello welcome to this week's Blonde Intelligence, I am your host Ms. Roni and I always seek to give you exquisite cranial repertoire. Authenticity matters more than ever in today's music landscape. As we venture deeper into 2025, the once-reliable strategy of manufacturing beef between artists is rapidly losing its effectiveness, and fans are becoming increasingly skilled at spotting the difference between genuine conflict and publicity stunts.Drawing from insights by entertainment psychologist Dr. Lisa Williams, we explore how the transparency of social media has fundamentally changed the relationship between artists and their audiences. When an artist releases a diss track that lacks emotional depth or conveniently appears just before an album drop, today's discerning listeners can sense the insincerity. The consequences? Diminished trust, fan disillusionment, and potentially damaged careers. What makes authentic beef different from the manufactured kind? We break down the key indicators: emotional resonance in lyrics, timing that doesn't conveniently align with promotional calendars, consistent behavior on social media, and genuine history between the artists involved. The recent Kendrick Lamar and Drake situation serves as a compelling case study in how real conflicts capture audience attention because they stem from substantive issues rather than marketing strategies. For artists navigating this changing landscape, the message is clear: focus on creating music with depth and meaning rather than relying on emotional manipulation. As one indie artist puts it, "If you don't have anything to say, it's not gonna work in rap right now." We also share details about the upcoming UME 2025 (Unplugged Music Experience and Conference) happening November 13-16, 2025, where authentic musical talent will take center stage.Ready to develop a more critical perspective on artist conflicts? On episode 113 of the Planet LP podcast, host Ted Asregadoo welcomes guest John Maschino to dive deep into the world of protest songs. While many immediately think of the 1960s, this episode explores how rebellious anthems have evolved and continue to be a powerful force in music. From the satirical observations of Devo's "Beautiful World" to the deeply personal liberation in Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club," and the unflinching social commentary of Childish Gambino's "This is America" and Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," this episode covers a wide range of musical rebellion. Ted and John also discuss examples of religious rebellion, such as The Lovestrange's "Hey Now, People," along with economic injustice in Oliver Anthony's "Rich Men North of Richmond," the fight for marriage equality in The Gossip's "Standing in the Way of Control," and the broader landscape of protest in the music of Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and more. Jump right into a deep discussion on the intersection of music, change, and rebellion. Planet LP's sponsor is Steve Fox's Old School. In this episode of Selective Ignorance, host Mandii B is joined by super producer A-King, journalist Jayson Rodriguez, and former music executive and media personality Wayno for a deep dive into the state of hip hop, R&B, and the ever-changing music industry. The conversation begins with an introduction and book promotion [00:00] before moving straight into a breakdown of the current state of hip hop and R&B and how the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar feud has shaped cultural conversations [00:55]. The crew then examines the cultural pulse of media and marketing and how these forces influence public perception of artists [02:20]. Drawing from their own careers, the hosts share personal experiences in media and content creation, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges of today’s digital-first environment [05:52]. The discussion turns to the role of gatekeeping in media—a double-edged sword that can both protect and limit access for artists [19:36]. From there, they reflect on the dynamics of Dreamville and the importance of industry relationships, exploring how collaboration, reputation, and authenticity shape success [32:21]. This naturally transitions into a broader conversation about navigating industry relationships and staying true to one’s voice [39:25]. As the conversation develops, the panel revisits the topic of gatekeeping in the music industry and how it affects rising talent [41:44], before diving into one of the most debated questions in culture: what defines the “Song of the Summer”?[42:09]. They unpack how streaming, TikTok, and changing audience habits have altered how hits are made and sustained. From there, they explore the evolution of music promotion and artist visibility in a landscape oversaturated with content [59:51], followed by a discussion on the state of R&B festivals and whether the genre’s live presence reflects its cultural impact [01:05:04]. They then critique the oversaturation of media and music, stressing the importance of differentiation and strategy for artists [01:08:23]. The episode also tackles the changing metrics in the music industry [01:12:28] and how the obsession with numbers affects music perception and success [01:16:39]. From there, they highlight the tension between cultural impact and artist recognition [01:21:22], offering perspective on how audiences, critics, and platforms assign value in today’s fragmented landscape. The conversation closes with reflections on navigating the modern music business [01:26:04] and why leverage is one of the most important tools artists can have in today’s industry [01:30:26]. “No Holes Barred: A Dual Manifesto Of Sexual Exploration And Power” w/ Tempest X!Sale Link Follow the host on Social MediaMandii B Instagram/X @fullcourtpumps Follow the guest on Social Media@wayno119 Follow the show on Social MediaInstagram @selectiveignorancepodTiktok @selective.ignoranceX/Twitter @selectiveig_pod See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What does it mean to call something sacred in a world that feels increasingly chaotic? Emily Austin sits down with writer and theologian Femi Olutade—a Nigerian-American Millennial, husband, father, hip-hop head, and follower of Jesus in the Eastern Orthodox tradition—to wrestle with the idea of holiness. Femi is best known as the lead writer for the acclaimed Dissect Podcast season on Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. and for his thoughtful essays on spirituality, culture, and history on Medium.Their conversation starts with a reflection on power, using The Lord of the Rings as a jumping-off point: who should hold the ring, and what happens when they do? From there, Emily and Femi trace the ways holiness has been understood across different traditions—evangelical, charismatic, liturgical, and Orthodox—and how each has shaped their lives. They talk about fasting and Lent as tools for clarity, why the Desert Mothers and Fathers still speak to us today, and what it means to see God's presence not only in church but also in the ordinary rhythms of life.In Memphis? This led to me being on a torta adventure from he mall to the movie theater. I went to see a movie in 2D and the ladies in front of me made it a 3D experience. These seats that were bolted to stay stiff ended up being super flexible putting the structure at risk. From there i try to step out of character and be a hero, to my avail i find out what my true weakness is, it is high cost of living. This girl was trying to shop lift and i was gonna buy her out the situation until  heard  the  full price and i was like nah I'm good. FRED HAMPTON - WHY DON'T YOU DIE FOR THE PEOPLETHIS IS AMERICA - CHILDISH GAMBINO(00:00 - 26:58)On the movie review section we talk about film movies and other things and give the worse takes. This week i speak about  “ THE CONJURING LAST RITE ” this is the final installment of the franchise, and for me it felt lackluster. This was snooze fest for me and i feel they have yet to ever reach the success of the first film. To me they did too much without doing too much if this makes any sense, this was a typical conjuring movie and they keep making the same game play every trip. If you want to watch this film, wait for a streaming date and watch it from home.   (26:59 - 34:06)I then jump into The Cool Report  where we discuss Kendrick Lamar once again because he just received an Emmy for his Super Bowl performance, what a time for hip hop and a bad time for a Canadian. This beef has been going on for more than a year and this is clear sign that there was a victor in this battle, award winning general. Speaking in general a woman politician in Georgia calls ice on Hyundai factory created to facilitate more jobs on the US. She killed an international relationship for votes that she will not be getting, she blew all chances of getting elected with this stunt. Then i speak on the assassination of Charlie Kirk and I try to be respectful as possible, while talking about the division of a nation. His death should not be the go to answer when you have a disagreement with someones views, this is not how our democracy should work.(34:07 - 01:02:28)We then step into a segment where the listeners ask me 3 questions about myself or just randomness. A random listener wants to talk about Pain in Full rights being bought by 50 cent, and this shall be interesting. If this becomes a series, then we can go more in-depth into their lives. Another character wants to know is it right to double charge siamese twins for events if they only take up one space, this was a very interesting convo. Then we receive a question of my future baby mother, that won't be anymore because she's unraveling in front of the internet, leave Brittany alone.  (01:02:29 - 01:17:02)Then we have 2 fans ask us a questions for PTL where we get asked the tough questions where we place ourselves in their shoes. A lover wants to know is it cool, for your friends to be cool with your ex. Is this a betrayal of friendship or a gross overlook on the idea that you invited this stranger into their lives and they have now bonded. Another lover wants to know how to break to to his girl that he knows she cheating, because she's cheating on him with him???? right that sounds crazy, tune in for full detais.(01:17:03  - 01:26:54)THE FINThanks to everyone that shows us love and wish y'all the best on the journey called life.(01:26:55 - 01:29:27)please continue to like, share, comment and subscribe.PEACE OUT!!!! For questions to be answered on Part time lover please email @nospecialcharacterspod@gmail.comTIME CODEINTRO/ WHAT'S NEW - 00:00MOVIE REVIEW - 26:59THE COOL REPORT - 34:07ASK ME A QUESTION - 01:02:29PART TIME LOVER - 01:17:01OUTRO - 01:26:55

“Surround yourself with people you admire.” In this episode of Recording Studio Rockstars, I had the pleasure of talking with Brendan Duffey, a multi-Grammy-nominated mix and mastering engineer with nearly 30 years of experience. Brendan has worked with legends like Kendrick Lamar, Sheryl Crow, Milton Nascimento, and Bruce Dickinson—best known as the iconic lead singer of Iron Maiden and a legendary solo artist in his own right. Brendan brings a deep understanding of both the technical and emotional sides of music production. We talked about everything from his early days teaching audio engineering—where he learned how to explain complex concepts in simple ways—to his approach to mixing and mastering across different genres. Brendan shared what it was like to remix and master much of Bruce Dickinson's solo catalog, how he thinks about low-end in hip-hop, and why sometimes a mistake in the studio can lead to your most exciting creative breakthrough. He also opened up about how vocal production has changed over the years, moving from an auditory process to a more visual one, and why he believes simplicity, emotional connection, and knowing your tools inside and out are what really make a mix come alive. Brendan reminded me that mixing isn't just about the gear or the plugins—it's about bringing out the best in the performance and creating something that moves people. This was a killer episode with tons of great insight, whether you're just starting out or deep in your career. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Brendan Duffey, an award-winning mix and mastering engineer with 21 nominations to his name. For 10 years, Brendan owned and operated a major recording facility in São Paulo, Brazil, before relocating to California to focus on mixing and mastering. Grifty

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2025 62:21

August 31, 2025 Welcome back to Grifty, the podcast where cult wellness, corporate greed, and authoritarian politics meet at a potluck dinner nobody wanted. Tonight's theme is Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Make America Healthy Again plan, better known as MAHA. The Trump team is branding it as a health revolution. But peel back the organic avocado sticker and it looks more like the same old MAGA project: pretend to fight for wellness while quietly dismantling the science and institutions that actually keep people alive. Let's dig in. ⸻ Segment 1: The Food Fight Nobody Ordered Robert F. Kennedy Jr., serving as Trump's Health Secretary, launched MAHA to target ultra-processed foods, artificial dyes, and chemical additives. Big food corporations such as Kraft Heinz, Mars, and Kellogg have already pledged to remove synthetic dyes by 2027 under mounting pressure (Axios (https://www.axios.com/2025/08/31/rfk-robert-kennedy-maha-food-plan)). Supporters frame MAHA as consumer protection. Critics see Kennedy using it to market himself as America's wellness crusader while sidelining medical professionals and spreading distrust in vaccines and science. Questions:     1.    Is this food reform real progress or just wellness-washed authoritarianism     2.    Should we be celebrating slightly cleaner Pop Tarts while the CDC is gutted behind the scenes ⸻ Segment 2: Polls Love Food Reform, Hate Science According to an Axios Ipsos survey, 87 percent of Americans support stronger food safety rules, with bipartisan backing (Axios (https://www.axios.com/2025/08/31/rfk-republicans-gop-business-make-america-healthy-again-maha)). Nobody is begging for more Red Dye No. 40. But vaccines remain a dividing line. Gallup found that Republicans are significantly less supportive of childhood vaccinations than Democrats, leaving MAHA as a unifying food crusade that simultaneously deepens America's science divide (Axios (https://www.axios.com/2025/08/31/rfk-republicans-gop-business-make-america-healthy-again-maha)). Food For Thought:     1.    Does this prove people only support science when it is about snacks     2.    What does it mean when food safety unites but basic vaccines divide ⸻ Segment 3: GOP Breaks Up With Big Food The Republican Party has suddenly distanced itself from Big Food. Instead of defending corporations, GOP leaders are aligning with suburban parents worried about chemical exposure and warning labels on junk food (Axios (https://www.axios.com/2025/08/31/rfk-republicans-gop-business-make-america-healthy-again-maha)). But corporate donors are not walking away quietly. Agricultural giants like Mountaire and Reyes Holdings are resisting regulation, and their financial influence means the fight is just beginning. Questions:     1.    What happens when Republicans break up with Big Food, and who is their rebound     2.    How long before Fox News says Biden wants to ban Oreos ⸻ Segment 4: MAHA's War on Science The Trump administration is using MAHA to undermine public health. The CDC is being overhauled and senior scientists are resigning in protest of political interference and Kennedy's rejection of mRNA technologies (The Hill (https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/5475599-trump-administration-overhauls-cdc/amp/)). Experts warn this is not temporary. Cutting research programs and pushing conspiracy rhetoric risks decades of progress in medicine and public health Questions:     1.    What does America look like when essential oils replace vaccines     2.    How do we measure the long term cost of this brain drain from the CDC ⸻ Segment 5: Killing Cancer Research While Posing As Wellness Saviors While Trump and Kennedy promote MAHA as a children's health movement, they are simultaneously dismantling federal programs designed to find cures for cancer, Alzheimer's, and ALS (House Appropriations Committee (https://democrats-appropriations.house.gov/news/press-releases/trump-team-dismantles-efforts-find-cure-cancer-and-other-deadly-disorders-and)). The cruelty is in the timing. The New York Times reported promising breakthroughs from a new pediatric brain cancer trial group just this week (New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/28/well/pediatric-brain-cancer-trial-group.html)). While researchers bring hope to families, Washington is choking off the funding that sustains them. Questions:     1.    How do you square calling yourself pro child health while cutting cancer research     2.    Is this just political theater that uses kids as props ⸻ Segment 6: MAHA 2026 Political Weaponized Wellness Kennedy and Trump are positioning MAHA as a key wedge issue for the 2026 midterms. The strategy is to woo suburban women, independents, and younger voters with promises of food safety and wellness transparency (Axios (https://www.axios.com/2025/08/24/rfk-jr-maha-strategy-2026-midterms)). The contradiction is glaring. They say they care about your family's health, yet they are dismantling the very systems that could save your family from disease. It is not Make America Healthy Again. It is Make America Hypocritical Always. Questions:     1.    Is this wellness movement just MAGA wrapped in Whole30 branding     2.    How do Democrats fight back against a political cleanse disguised as health reform ⸻ OUTRO That is MAHA in all its kale washed glory. A movement pretending to save you from Lucky Charms while cutting off cancer research and gutting public health. This is violence with branding. Trump and Kennedy are not protecting families, they are using wellness as a mask for authoritarian power. Kendrick Lamar. Please take us out.

In celebration of Peter, Bjorn and John's breakthrough third album, 'Writer's Block,' we take a detailed look at how it was made. When Peter Morén and Björn Yttling started playing music together in high school, they bonded over a shared love of guitar rock. When they moved to Stockholm after high school, they met John Eriksson, who was a trained percussionist, playing in a percussion ensemble. They eventually asked him if he would consider playing drums with them in a pop band and the trio, Peter Bjorn and John, was born. In 2001, they self-released their first EP with a self-titled album following in 2002. They jumped between Swedish labels Beat That! Records to Planekonomi and released their second album, 'Falling Out' in 2004. At this point, they considered ending the band, but decided to make one more album and record it themselves with Yttling producing. 'Writer's Block' was eventually released in 2006. In this episode, Peter Morén reflects on connecting with Yttling early on and how their sound evolved over the years. Morén shares how he originally approached guitar by using multiple chords and leaving little space until Eriksson encouraged him to play less. Björn Yttling describes his role as the producer and how the recording space he had at that time was not conducive to recording a full band. Despite the constraints of having no budget and only a couple of microphones, they were able to capture a unique sound by relying heavily on minimal drum arrangements, percussion overdubs and extensive use of a Space Echo. John Eriksson discusses his naive approach to the drums and how the relaxed recording atmosphere helped them to try new things with this album. With Morén and Yttling encouraging him to write and sing for the first time, Eriksson was able to add another dimension to the album with his own attempts at writing pop songs. From using a drum kit found in a trash heap, to relying on whistling instead of recording synth lines, to making the drum lines sample-able, to how hip hop artists like Drake, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar would go on to rap over beats from the album, to being in their late twenties and feeling like the band had run its course, to the unexpected global success of “Young Folks”, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Before Kendrick Lamar became one of the greatest lyricists of his generation, he was K.Dot—a kid from Compton with a front-row seat to trauma, loyalty, violence, and survival. This is the story of good kid, m.A.A.d city and the real-life events that fueled it. It's about a drive-by shooting that changed Kendrick forever. About a murder. About a robbery. About friends who vanished and others who couldn't be saved. It's about escaping the cycle without forgetting where you came from. And above all, it's about mercy—in a world that rarely offers any.
