According to multiple media reports, pet surrenders are near an all-time high and shelters nationwide are overcrowded: Axios: Animal shelters are overrun with stray or owner-surrendered pets this year, leading to spiking post-pandemic euthanasia rates across the country.Why it matters: Animal intakes at both public and private shelters across the country are expected to reach a 3-year high this year, and adoptions or returns to owners are not keeping pace, according to the Shelter Animals Count database. Vox: From Rhode Island to Seattle and everywhere in between, shelters are reporting they're at capacity, forcing an increase in the number of dogs killed due to space constraints. Earlier this year, almost half of shelters surveyed reported an increase in euthanized dogs, while only 10 percent reported a decrease. Los Angeles Times: An overcrowding crisis has gripped animal shelters across the state and nationwide...Adoptions aren't keeping up with the number of dogs coming in, leading to higher euthanasia rates, according to Shelter Animals Count, a nonprofit that tracks shelter statistics nationwide. KTLA-TV: 1 in 6 dog owners surrendered a pet in (the) last year, according to a survey by Veterinarians.org. One issue: new pet owners underestimate how expensive it is to care for a dog or cat: USA Today: The average annual cost of owning a dog is $376 a month or $4,512 a year, according to a recent survey of 1,000 U.S. dog owners...The cost of owning a dog may be higher in the first year, with adoption or purchase fees, the cost of dog supplies and initial vaccines and vet treatment expenses. USA Today: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has quoted the average cost to own a cat as $1,149 per year, with the first year of pet ownership often being more expensive at an average of $1,904. Retired Chicago veteran news anchor Linda Yu kicks off my season 9 opener as we talk about her decades-long career in Chicago news television, what it was like to navigate the news media industry as an Asian American woman, and more. Bio: Linda Yu has been called a trailblazer, mentor and award- journalist. She recently stepped back from daily broadcasting after more than forty years in television news. Yu began her career in 1974 as a writer for the Los Angeles ABC station KABC-TV and then went on to become a writer/producer at KTLA-TV. In 1975 she stepped in front of the camera as a reporter for the ABC affiliate station in Portland, Oregon KATU-TV. Within months, she received an offer from ABC owned station KGO-TV in San Francisco as reporter and anchor, where Yu worked from to 1979. In late 1979, she was spotted by the NBC owned station in Chicago, WMAQ-TV, and moved to the Windy City as weekend anchor and reporter. Part of Yu's motivation for accepting the position was that she would be the first Asian American to appear on a Chicago network station. Five years later, ABC won her back and she moved to Chicago's ABC7, WLS-TV, to anchor the station's newly created 4 p.m. news hour. Later, an 11 a.m. news hour was added to her anchor duties. Both news programs maintained their number one rating throughout her 33 year career at ABC7. Among the honors and recognition for Yu are six local Emmy awards, as well as induction into the prestigious “Silver Circle” of legendary Chicago broadcasters. She has been named one of Today's Chicago Women magazine's “100 Women to Watch” and has been awarded a National Gold Medal by the National Conference of Community and Justice. In her community service, Yu spent more than 30 years as the Advisory Board Chairperson for the Chinese American Service League. She is also a co-founder of the Chicago chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association. She has been an active supporter and volunteer for Common Threads, the Juvenile Protective Association and the March of Dimes. A 42-year-old man "lied his way" into a guarded location and tried to drown his daughter. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Twin Speaks Station was dispatched to Pali Mountain Camp in Running Springs on Oct. 25 for a drowning report. Timothy Shipman allegedly tried to drown his 2-year-old daughter at camp. His 5-year-old son was allegedly confined in the car. Pali Mountain Camp workers removed the youngsters from Shipman until deputies came. The 2-year-old girl and her sibling were taken to a hospital and are stable. Shipman was taken to a hospital and released to officers, according to the sheriff's office. Shipman was jailed at the Central Detention Center for attempted murder. His $1 million bail. "We were glad to discover today that the victim is recovering and in stable condition," Pali Mountain Camp told KTLA-TV. After a car crash that killed six people and injured eight others, a 37-year-old nurse faces murder charges. As the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office alleges, Nicole Linton crashed into several cars on Aug. 4, while speeding down La Brea Boulevard. According to KTLA-TV, Asherey Ryan, 23, her 11-month-old son Alonzo, and her fiancé, Reynold Lester, all died as a result. Linton allegedly crashed into Ryan's vehicle, causing it to explode into flames, as she was heading to a prenatal checkup with her unborn child, son, and fiancé. Besides the fatalities, six other vehicles were involved in the crash, and five people suffered minor injuries. KABC-TV reports that police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. Linton, who was working as a traveling nurse from Houston, Texas, was traveling at around 90 miles per hour in a Mercedes when she sped through a red light at the intersection of La Brea and Slauson avenues. According to KABC, Linton was hospitalized after the crash. Her bail was initially set at $2 million, but it was later raised to $9 million. Linton was charged Monday, Aug. 8, with six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter. Linton faces 90 years to life in prison if convicted of all charges. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said, "This is a case that will always be remembered for the senseless loss of so many innocent lives." In the case of a 45-year-old dermatologist who poisoned her husband of ten years husband, she stands accused of murder. According to the Irvine Police Department, on Thursday, Aug. 4, a man reported he believed his wife, Yue Yu, was poisoning him. Over the course of a month, the victim reportedly became ill and suspicious. The victim turned over video evidence "supporting his suspicions" to police. According to KTLA-TV, Yu poisoned her husband without his knowledge for an unknown period of time. According to reports, the victim captured Yu pouring drain cleaner into her husband's beverage on July 11. She took a sip from the cup and left the kitchen. Yu was interviewed by police, and a search warrant was executed at the home she shares with the victim on Aug. 4. She was arrested and booked into Orange County Jail on Aug. 4. Following significant internal injuries from the alleged poisoning, the victim is expected to recover. In addition to the poisoning, a domestic violence restraining order has been filed against Yu. According to police, a 23-year-old woman posed as a nurse at a hospital and attempted to take a newborn. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department reported that on July 14 at 10:30 a.m., deputies from the Moreno Valley station responded to an incident at Riverside University Health System - Medical Center regarding a woman impersonating a nurse. Miron reportedly entered a patient's room and tried to take the newborn and leave. Hospital staff reportedly confronted Miron and contacted security. Miron fled before security officers or deputies could catch up with her. Miron was identified as the suspect and a search warrant was obtained for her Moreno Valley home, where "evidence of value" was discovered. She was arrested and booked for kidnapping. The Riverside University Health System - Medical Center's CEO Jennifer Cruikshank told KTLA-TV the hospital is investigating "how the suspect accessed the patient's room and interacted with the family." The first reports from Los Angeles had an all-too familiar ring - a black motorist who had been stopped by police for drunk driving was pulled out of his car and beaten by several white officers. But this time, the entire incident was captured on a bystander's video camera, then broadcast via television around the world. When the offending officers went on trial, an all-white jury saw things differently. After announcing a deadlock on a single assault charge and acquitting the four police officers, the city erupted in an eerie replay of the Watts riots thirty years before which had left much of Los Angeles' inner-city community in ruins. She's built multi-million dollar campaign strategies in multiple categories including automotive, pharmaceutical, television & film, CPG and beauty.  After launching Media Bella, a wildly successful media consultancy in 2008, she became pregnant with her second son. Days after her second son turned 4 months old, the children's father left her for another woman with $13.16 in the bank. He never returned. Left with two options and no financial resources, Askia chose to pack up her infant and pre-teen son, and move into the home of her oldest son's youth football coach - a man she barely knew. A choice she fondly recalls as the best she's ever made. Despite the harsh reality of her grim financial circumstances, the humiliation of abandonment, she kept her eyes on their futures.  "I was moving and operating with zero clarity. All I knew was I needed to do what made the most sense for Dallas. He was priority number 1. My infant was easy, he was perfectly happy to be papoosed to my chest everyday. My oldest was my biggest concern because I knew he was painfully aware of everything that had gone on and since I was barely able to process our new normal, I knew he was struggling too. We didn't deserve what was happening to us and I was ill-equipped to help him. It was more pain and confusion than most 12 year olds should ever have to process and the only thing I could think to do was keep him in sports. He was the happiest version of himself in a jersey and I refused to take that from him. We battled through the pain by not avoiding it and we've never looked back." The Future of Division 1 was born out of a series of circumstances that happened to and around a single mother and her son, a Division 1 football recruit. A mom who had zero knowledge of the college recruiting process but dove in blindly to support her son through it - twice. The company name is a personal declaration that speaks truth to the futures of all facets of the Division 1 recruiting process and has now blossomed into a brand, sports content company including a podcast and web series (currently in development) with hundreds of athletes proclaiming their futures. The Future of D1 is the future of professional sports.
