Brian also held executive positions with the University of Phoenix Online, including CEO, chief operating officer, and senior vice president.   Brian joins us on the show to share what he has built at Grand Canyon University and why he was so committed to building a Christian university that catered to all socio-economic backgrounds. He describes the impact of the 2008 recession on his team's mission to raise capital to support Grand Canyon's mission. Brian also describes some of the social programs Grand Canyon is involved in, including CityServe (a network of churches and community service organizations dedicated to helping the needy and transforming broken communities), The Learning Lounge, which supports elementary-age kids, the largest Habitat for Humanity program in the world, and crime prevention initiatives in the local area.   “We believe in partnerships. Christians should be the most collaborative group of people in the world.” - Brian Mueller   “Our goal in coming here was to make private Christian higher education affordable to all socioeconomic classes of Americans.” - Brian Mueller   “What we're learning is the appetite for people in this country to get their young people in an environment where they can learn about the world in the context of the biblical narrative.” - Brian Mueller    This Week on The Wow Factor: What Brian learned about the value of hard work from an early age Where Brian went professionally when he left college Why he moved to Denver, his time as a head basketball coach, and the decision to return to Arizona How his wife's big surprise led to Brian leaving his Ph.D. program and signing up to teach at the University of Phoenix The two key lessons that Brian learned when he was growing the University of Phoenix online Lessons that Brian has learned about making private Christian higher education affordable to all socioeconomic classes of Americans through Grand Canyon University Why Brian's past experience in raising money through capital markets gave him a vision for how to fund Grand Canyon University, which has meant they haven't had to raise tuition fees in 14 years How Brian went about marketing the university and increasing the number of students so dramatically Brian's five-point plan for achieving his vision for Grand Canyon University's role in building a Christian community here   Brian Mueller's Words of Wisdom: When people ask me about leadership, I always tell them that vision is the most critical component. You have to see the future; you have to focus on who your customer is and stay focused on getting better every day, every week, every month, and every year to stay out in front of the competition.   The Church needs to develop leaders who are visionaries who are forward-thinking so that the Christian community can lead the world and not react to the world.   Connect with Brian Mueller: Grand Canyon University Website Grand Canyon University on Instagram Grand Canyon University on Facebook   Connect with The WOW Factor: The WOW Factor Website Connect with Brad Formsma via email Brad Formsma on LinkedIn Brad Formsma on Instagram Brad Formsma on Facebook Brad Formsma on Twitter

In this podcast Miss Jones, Ms Marris & Toot Hill students discuss two articles which can be found on https://www.issuesonline.co.uk -> 'Nine things to think about before posting something negative online' and 'How to report bullying on social media'. For a written account of what we mention please see partial articles below: "1) Why are you posting it? Have a think about why you are posting it. Is it to take part in healthy debate and conversation or is it just to hurt someone’s feelings? A good idea is to write a list of as many reasons as you can think of why you feel the need to do it, and a list of reasons why you shouldn’t. Seeing it all written down might give you a bit of perspective on the situation. Plus, the chances are, you won’t be able to come up with that many reasons why you should. 4) Would you say it to their face? A big reason why we all find it easy to say negative stuff online is because we can do it from behind a screen, and it is way easier to type insults or rumours than it is to actually say them out loud. Always think if you would feel comfortable saying something to someone’s face before typing it out on your phone and hitting send. Plus, even though it might seem like it can be easy to be anonymous on social media, everything that you put out there is staying there until you take it down for the most part, and there is absolutely no guarantee it will stay anonymous forever. There is always going to be the possibility that you get in trouble for it somewhere down the line, or affect your career, relationships, school records and in the most serious of cases, could land you in trouble with the law. 8) How will it affect their lives? There’s a good chance that whatever you say will have an actual impact on someone’s life. We know it might not seem like it when there is a screen and probably hundreds or maybe even thousands of miles between you, but whatever gets put out into the universe has the power to make waves and to damage someone’s life, career or relationship beyond repair. 9) How would it affect you if you were on the receiving end? OK so we know this is the kind of thing your teacher or your Mum used to say when they wanted to prove a point, but actually feeling empathy for other people is super important before you decide to say or send something negative online. If those notifications came popping up on your screen, the chances are you would feel a bit rubbish about the whole thing." "YouTube If you feel a video you have seen on YouTube is inappropriate, you can ‘flag’ this by clicking on the little flag at the bottom right of the video. YouTube will then look at it to see if it breaks their terms of use. If it does, they will remove it. YouTube state that videos with hate content, graphic violence or nudity cannot be uploaded so if you see one, report it as inappropriate. To remove someone from your YouTube page, go to your account page and click on ‘all contacts’ in the ‘Friends and Contacts’ section. Choose which person you wish to unfriend and click on ‘remove contact’. Once you have done this, the person will no longer be on your ‘share video’ list. If you receive abusive, bullying or threatening comments on YouTube, you can report them and they will investigate https://www.youtube.com/reportabuse. Instagram Bullying or abuse on Instagram can take place in a number of ways: Negative Comments Fake Profiles Hacking Accounts Instagram’s advice is to block and unfollow the person who is being abusive. To block someone on Instagram, tap their username to open their profile, tap the three dots and press the option to ‘block user’. In this podcast Miss Jones and Ms Marris discuss the article which can be found on https://www.issuesonline.co.uk -> Net-zero – the UK’s contribution to stopping global warming. The article explains the actions the UK will take to Combat Climate Change. We then discuss with students (5 mins) what they think of Climate Change and how we can help get to net-zero. "This report responds to a request from the Governments of the UK, Wales and Scotland, asking the Committee to reassess the UK’s long-term emissions targets. Our new emissions scenarios draw on ten new research projects, three expert advisory groups, and reviews of the work of the IPCC and others. The conclusions are supported by detailed analysis published in the Net Zero Technical Report that has been carried out for each sector of the economy, plus consideration of F-gas emissions and greenhouse gas removals. The report’s key findings are that: The Committee on Climate Change recommends a new emissions target for the UK: net-zero greenhouse gases by 2050. In Scotland, we recommend a net-zero date of 2045, reflecting Scotland’s greater relative capacity to remove emissions than the UK as a whole. In Wales, we recommend a 95% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050. A net-zero GHG target for 2050 will deliver on the commitment that the UK made by signing the Paris Agreement. It is achievable with known technologies, alongside improvements in people’s lives, and within the expected economic cost that Parliament accepted when it legislated the existing 2050 target for an 80% reduction from 1990. However, this is only possible if clear, stable and well-designed policies to reduce emissions further are introduced across the economy without delay. Current policy is insufficient for even the existing targets. How can the UK reach net-zero GHGs? Scenarios for UK net-zero GHGs in 2050 It is impossible to predict the exact mix of technologies and behaviours that will best meet the challenge of reaching net-zero GHG emissions, but our analysis in this report gives an improved understanding of what a sensible mix might look like. Including: Resource and energy efficiency that reduce demand for energy across the economy. Without these measures the required amounts of low-carbon power, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) would be much higher. In many, though not all, cases they reduce overall costs. Some societal choices that lead to a lower demand for carbon-intensive activities, for example an acceleration in the shift towards healthier diets with reduced consumption of beef, lamb and dairy products. Extensive electrification, particularly of transport and heating, supported by a major expansion of renewable and other low-carbon power generation. The scenarios involve around a doubling of electricity demand, with all power produced from low-carbon sources (compared to 50% today). That could for example require 75 GW of offshore wind in 2050, compared to 8 GW today and 30 GW targeted by the Government’s sector deal by 2030. 75 GW of offshore wind would require up to 7,500 turbines and could fit within 1–2% of the UK seabed, comparable to the area of sites already leased for wind projects by the Crown Estate. Development of a hydrogen economy to service demands for some industrial processes, for energy-dense applications in long-distance HGVs and ships, and for electricity and heating in peak periods. By 2050, a new low-carbon industry is needed with UK hydrogen production capacity of comparable size to the UK’s current fleet of gas-fired power stations. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) in industry, with bioenergy (for GHG removal from the atmosphere), and very likely for hydrogen and electricity production. CCS is a necessity not an option. The scenarios involve aggregate annual capture and storage of 75–175 MtCO₂ in 2050, which would require a major CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure servicing at least five clusters and with some CO₂ transported by ships or heavy goods vehicles. Changes in the way we farm and use our land to put much more emphasis on carbon sequestration and biomass production. Enabled by healthier diets and reductions in food waste, our scenarios involve a fifth of UK agricultural land shifting to tree planting, energy crops and peatland restoration. Taken together, these measures would reduce UK emissions by 95–96% from 1990 to 2050. Tackling the remaining 4–5% would require some use of options that currently appear more speculative. That could involve greater shifts in diet and land use alongside more limited aviation demand growth, a large contribution from emerging technologies to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere (e.g. ‘direct air capture’), or successful development of a major supply of carbon-neutral synthetic fuels (e.g. produced from algae or renewable power). The scenarios involve additional reductions in the UK’s consumption emissions as they include measures like resource efficiency that cut emissions from production overseas as well as in the UK. However, consumption emissions will only reach net-zero once the rest of the world’s territorial emissions are also reduced to net-zero. At this point the UK can expect to pay slightly more to cover the costs of low-carbon production of the goods we import. The above information is reprinted with kind permission from Committee on Climate Change." Bibliography Committee on Climate Change (2019). In this podcast Miss Jones and Ms Marris discuss the article which can be found on https://www.issuesonline.co.uk (written by Kimberly Holland) -> What triggers anxiety? 11 causes that may surprise you. We let you know the viewpoints of the professionals, our opinions and the thoughts of your fellow Toot Hill students. "Anxiety is a mental health condition that can cause feelings of worry, fear or tension. For some people, anxiety can also cause panic attacks and extreme physical symptoms, like chest pain. Anxiety disorders are incredibly common. They affect an estimated 40 million people in the United States, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. What causes anxiety and anxiety disorders can be complicated. It’s likely that a combination of factors, including genetics and environmental reasons, play a role. However, it’s clear that some events, emotions or experiences may cause symptoms of anxiety to begin or may make them worse. These elements are called triggers. Anxiety triggers There are 11 causes listed in Issues, here are four of them. You can read about the others in the Learning Lounge or online by following the link below: Health issues A health diagnosis that’s upsetting or difficult, such as cancer or a chronic illness, may trigger anxiety or make it worse. This type of trigger is very powerful because of the immediate and personal feelings it produces. Negative thinking Your mind controls much of your body, and that’s certainly true with anxiety. When you’re upset or frustrated, the words you say to yourself can trigger greater feelings of anxiety. Parties or social events If a room full of strangers doesn’t sound like fun, you’re not alone. Events that require you to make small talk or interact with people you don’t know can trigger feelings of anxiety, which may be diagnosed as social anxiety disorder. Conflict Relationship problems, arguments, disagreements – these conflicts can all trigger or worsen anxiety." Bibliography Holland, K. (2019). In this podcast Miss Jones and Ms Marris discuss the article which can be found on https://www.issuesonline.co.uk (written by Tijen Butler) -> Is homework necessary or a pointless waste of time. We let you know the viewpoints of the professionals, our opinions and the thoughts of your fellow Toot Hill students. "There’s an ongoing debate surrounding the necessity of homework for school children and young teenagers alike. On one hand, homework can cause stress and the task may not have much substance to it, with most teachers merely setting it because they’ve been instructed to do so daily. But on the other flip of the coin, homework is necessary because the child can then gain a deeper understanding of a topic and they will grow up disciplined. What are the benefits of homework? The after-school workload is an opportunity for families to get involved in the child’s learning process, and it reinforces what has been taught that day at school, so the child can better understand and remember. It can give parents an insight into what their child is struggling and exceeding in. Then, the parent could arrange private tuition in that area, if it was needed. It also gives students various skills and life-lessons such as discipline, accountability, independence, time management and team-work. These will all be beneficial beyond school and it gives them a taste of ‘real life’. But then why can homework be a pointless waste of time? Firstly, homework is handed out too frequently, making it stressful and boring. Often, it’s also too difficult for the child, even with the parent’s help, increasing pressure and anxiety. As a result of this, parents often do their child’s homework instead. A survey shows that a hefty 23% of parents actually complete their child’s homework assignments without even involving them. Another reason it could be a waste of time is the way in which teachers set it. They seem to set frivolous tasks for the sake of it. Unless the homework holds purpose, why bother doing it? It may be better to set fewer hours on assignments that are truly meaningful, instead of 5+ hours on repetitive tasks – though not all schools would do this. However, subjects such as maths will often always be beneficial because they work at practising equations… but, again, this only works if the child understands what they’re doing."
