Ornette Coleman set the jazz world ablaze with the release of his first recording “Something Else” in 1958. Ironically, so many of the innovations he introduced to the music have become so ingrained over the passing years, it's difficult to believe his music was so controversial at the time. His conception of free jazz influenced mainstream jazz musicians like Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Jackie McClean, to name just a few, who adopted parts of his so-called “harmolodic system” to their own music. We'll play many of his compositions that have become jazz standards, including "Lonely Woman", "The Blessing", "Turnaround" and many others from this creative artist.

The word "homosexual" was first uttered on American television on the night of October 21st, 1963. The show was Breaking Point, a drama series set in a psychiatric hospital. The episode was a confronting take on sexual harassment and toxic masculinity that directly posed the question to its audience: "What is a man?" Despite network objection, this milestone in queer history happened solely because of the determination of the show's producer: George Lefferts. This show was just one of many socially conscious, thoughtful and progressive projects from Lefferts, a man whose long life was defined by his writing and his deep empathy for others. In 1960, he spent hundreds of hours interviewing everyday women about their problems for a groundbreaking show called Special for Women. But it was in radio that he'd really cut his teeth in the early days, working on dramatised science fiction shows like Dimension X and X Minus One in the 1950s. In 1953, he worked with Frank Sinatra on a noir drama series for NBC Radio, Rocky Fortune. Together, they came up with a wacky noir premise for which almost every episode followed the same formula: Rocky is unemployed. Rocky gets a new job. It all goes wrong for him in some way, and he ends up implicated in a murder. Rocky talks his way out of it and catches the killer. Rocky ends up unemployed again. The show was not a hit at the time, and decades of Sinatra biographers have dedicated one or two pithy sentences to it at most. Today, with every episode widely available online in the public domain, Rocky Fortune sounds different. This week on SUDDENLY, we listen to two full episodes of the show plus one of To Be Perfectly Frank, Sinatra's other NBC show from the same period that saw him in the role of DJ. Looking at the work of Lefferts, Ernest Kinoy and Norm Sickel, we attempt to put Rocky Fortune in his proper context - and reclaim him as a hero for the marginalised, for women, and for the unemployed. He wrote banter for Sinatra's 15-minute DJ series, To Be Perfectly Frank. Later, he wrote for Rocky Fortune, apparently at Sinatra's request. His episodes were among the most dramatic and socially conscious of the series. They differed in tone considerably from the comedic noir that Rocky Fortune became most known for. Later, his poems inspired the 1956 instrumental album Frank Sinatra Conducts Tone Poems of Color. Little else seems to be publicly known about Sickel. In this week's episode we're featuring a 1978 album for Texas icon Red Steagall: "Hang On Feelin'". Recorded and released during a period of continued commercial decline, "Hang On Feelin'" was Steagall's last outing for ABC/Dot Records. That commercial decline does not translate to a decline in quality however, and fans of traditional country and western swing will find plenty to like. Based in Nashville for much of the 70s, this record has backing from many of Music City's top flight sidemen but as usual for Texas Red, there's a definite Lone Star flavour. We could've featured the whole album this week (it's that good), but just a few of the highlights include a Jim Glaser cut (the album was recorded at Glaser Sound Studio) on "Sittin' In An All Nite Cafe"; the dark single "The Devil Ain't A Lonely Woman's Friend"; a wistful cowboy's recollection in "About Horses And Wars" and the self-explanatory "All I Knew To Talk About Was Texas". If Red Steagall ever put out a bad record, this wasn't it.

Es por ello que la fusión del sonido de la guitarra, el saxofón y en dos ocasiones el trombón, es omnipresente. Es importante recalcar que durante el proceso de composición ya se tenía en cuenta el sonido tan personal de VictorJimenez. Se trata de una propuesta dirigida hacia el público y no un ejercicio técnico e intelectual de música para músicos. Sundust ha sido compuesto en un mes y está pensado como un todo. Aunque los temas sean de estilos diferentes, proponen un viaje en el que se va bailando del jazz a músicas sudamericanas (bolero, samba), africanas e incluso recogiendo influencias de la música clásica y del rock. La armonía y el ritmo realzan el aspecto melódico con una gran fuerza impuesta por intérpretes de la talla de MarianoSteimberg, Alessandro Cesarini y Albert Palau. El nombre Sundust (Polvo de sol) es un mensaje existencialista a la vez que racional para contestar parcialmente a la gran pregunta: ¿Quien soy? Una metáfora que da su nombre también a uno de los temas del disco; un tema alegre y rápido que da ganas de bailar y de disfrutar de la vida. Este año 2019 el festival ha encontrado un nuevo emplazamiento, tanto espacial como temporal, será el CICUS y el inicio del verano lo que marque este hecho novedoso. El mes de junio marca el inicio del momento con mas calor del año como la música que proponemos. El damero del CICUS como espacio elegido para los conciertos dará además el pistoletazo de salida del programa anual de las noches de verano en la Universidad de Sevilla. La idea fundamental en esta ocasión es hacer que el Jazz Festival Universidad de Sevilla-Assejazz sea un proyecto cercano, un lugar de encuentro entre los músicos y los aficionados y para ello este año queremos contar con la mayor parte de músicos que está y son en la ciudad. Se empezó con la presentación del cartel el pasado día 17 de junio será la Sursonora Big Band creada en los talleres del CICUS gracias a la inestimable sabiduría de Nacho Botonero aunque en esta ocasión fué su director Javier Rodríguez también tuvo lugar el concierto final de taller del taller de voz de Assejazz impartido por Natalia Ruciero. Haremos un impás hasta el martes día 25 donde convocamos a todos los músicos de jazz que quieran participar en una sesión improvisada de combos al azar, lo hemos llamado Assejazz play jazz estamos todos invitados. El día 26 la Assejazz Big Band nos prepara un concierto basado en el trabajo de gran banda que durante el año se ha preparado dentro de la asociación. A Partir del día 27 tienen lugar los conciertos profesionales con músicos de reconocido prestigio. La cantante y saxofonista Eva Fernández presenta “Yo pregunto” y lo anuncia como primer proyecto liderado por ella misma, reafirmando su compromiso con la sensibilidad y la creatividad al hacer música. Este nuevo trabajo discográfico deja de ser un conjunto de “standards”, como en los anteriores discos en los que ha participado, para dar paso a la creación y así poder empezar a tejer su propio discurso. “Los poemas que forman este disco resonaron tan fuerte cuando los leí que tuve que empezar a cantarlos“ escribe la artista en la contraportada del disco. Eva Fernández forma tándem compositivo con Josep Munar, guitarrista de la formación, para musicar estos poemas, unidos per la premisa estilística ”menos es más”. Et évoquent l'un des petits ensembles les plus élégants et célébrés du genre: le Modern Jazz Quartet. A son origine, la rencontre du feu et de la glace, du vibraphoniste Milt Jackson et du pianiste John Lewis. L'un apportant son énergie exubérante et l'autre sa rigueur issue de sa formation classique. De la fusion de ces deux éléments nait un style musical emblématique du "third stream", la troisième voie inédite entre jazz et classique. Mais le MJQ n'était pas non plus insensible aux évolutions les plus récentes, comme en témoigne l'album Lonely Woman qui a placé Ornette Coleman sur la carte du jazz.
