In this special episode of Inside the Lab, producer and host David Ritter does a dive into the history of efforts to integrate AI into the practice of healthcare. He's joined by MD/PhD candidate Rahim Hirani, who discusses the history of efforts to automate diagnostic decision making in healthcare all the way back to the 1950s, and how these efforts were qualitatively different from current tools like large language models. Then, he's joined by Dr. Melody Nelson from the who discusses contemporary issues with applying modern AI tools in the context of the practice of pathology.
What we're offering today is something completely different: two outlier artists (although one is a French icon) who created off-kilter, out of the box, almost unintelligible nuggets of artistic brilliance. These cuts are linked, not only by the fact that they both feature sinuous bass lines and orchestral flourishes, but that they are produced by artists whose stances were uncompromising, prickly, unknowable - and, touched with stardust. SCOTT WALKERScott Walker, whose rich, deep baritone was first introduced to the world in the early 1960s, with the internationally famous group, The Walker Brothers (they weren't) - and their hit single “The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore.” When he went solo he faced an uphill battle, trying to gain public acceptance for his dark, and tangled personal visions. I became enamored of his work when I heard his musical evocation of Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal. By 1970, his solo career went silent. Probably, as a financial imperative, he rejoined The Walker Bros, for some moderately successful MOR cover filled albums. But, in 1984 Scott's mojo returned, triumphantly, with the album “Climate of the Hunter” from which this cut, Rawhide, derives. (Don't worry about trying to figure out the lyrics - just let it wash over you). Against all odds, the “30th Century Man's” time had come, and there was a whole new generation of acolytes, eager to drink the magic potions Scott was uncorking. SERGE GAINSBOURG Serge Gainsbourg's unique 1971 concept album, Histoire de Melody Nelson, is a suite of songs telling the story of a doomed, illicit romance between a middle aged man and a 14 year old girl named Melody, portrayed by his muse, the dreamy actress and model, Jane Birkin, who also graces the cover.Produced far before the “Me Too” era, this provocative and subversive pop-music drama was not offensive to the French; on the contrary, it cemented the French chameleon's iconic status, and the celebrity couple became the subject of much tabloid journalism. His stylish, outlaw decadence generated a fascination that continues to this day. Gainsbourg, born Lucian Ginsburg, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, was a manufactured creation. He took his nom de musique as a tribute to the English painter Thomas Gainsborough. And, after surviving the German occupation of France during WW2- (he recalled having to wear the Yellow Star, which identified him as a Jew) - he went on to carve out an indelible new identity of swagger, writing and producing over 500 pop hits spanning several genres. He was one of a kind.

I have been a fan of today's guest since I first saw his mind-blowing film, Night Watch years ago. Timur Bekmambetov is an established director, producer, and writer who has built a name for himself both in his home country, Russia, and here in the U.S., making films, music videos, and commercials. At first glance at his film, I became obsessed with Timur's work and his filmmaking style. He is the producer and director of Day Watch (2006), Wanted (2008), Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (2012), Profile ( 2021), and many many more.Timur is a jack of all trades. His journey in the industry started with theater production design and soon he got the directing bug. While honing his directing skills, he took up producing which then led to movie production. One of my favorite of his films is the genre-bending Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie, James McCovey, and Morgan Freeman.Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is an office worker whose life is going nowhere. After his estranged father is murdered, he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), who recruits him into the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins that takes its orders from Fate itself. Fox and Sloan (Morgan Freeman), the Fraternity's leader, teach Wesley to tap into dormant powers. Though he enjoys his newfound abilities, he begins to suspect that there is more to the Fraternity than meets the eye.Abraham Lincoln is reinvented as a vampire-killing president in this Timur Bekmambetov-directed action picture starring Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, and Dominic Cooper. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author Seth Grahame-Smith adapts his own book for 20th Century Fox. Tim Burton produces alongside Bekmambetov and Jim Lemley.Timur's latest project is Profile. The film was initially released in Russia in 2018 and is set to be released in the US on May 14, 2021.Based on Anna Erelle's non-fiction book, In The Skin of a Jihadist, the film contextualizes our digital life and fears. It explores the role of digital spaces in the recruitment of young European Women by ISIS. British journalist, Amy Whittaker sets on this investigation by creating a Facebook profile under the alias of Melody Nelson along with a persona online of a woman who has recently converted to Islam. The results are thrilling and eye-opening.Profile was shot in a new film language called Screenlife. What is Screenlife?Screenlife is a new format of visual content that has grown from independent projects to full-length, world-renowned films, documentaries, and TV shows. Its main idea is that everything that the viewer sees happens on the computer, tablet, or smartphone screen. All the events unfold directly on the screen of your device. Instead of a film set — there's a desktop, instead of the protagonist's actions — a cursor. If you are involved in video production, cinema, or even video games, Screenlife is a new expressive environment for you, the potential of which is yet to be discovered. Before your eyes, there will be new tools to work with, such as the screen life recorder.Bekmambetov produced the Screenlife film Unfriended, in which the action takes place on the screens of protagonists' computers. With a budget of only $1 million, the movie raised $64 million at the box office worldwide. This new film language is extremely exciting. Timur and I discuss Screenlife, his visual style, his directing process, Hollywood politics, and much more.Enjoy my conversation with Timur Bekmambetov.

We had a fantastic time recording our 7th full length episode with Krief. For our first francophone album (Spoiler, Tom and I don't speak French) we discuss how Patrick still draws inspiration from this 1971 production. Thankfully he does speak French and was able to explain the lyrics to us. Wait...it's about what?!?
I have been a fan of today’s guest since I first saw his mind-blowing film, Night Watch years ago. Timur Bekmambetov is an established director, producer, and writer who has built a name for himself both in his home country, Russia, and here in the U.S., making films, music videos, and commercials. At first glance at his film, I became obsessed with Timur’s work and his filmmaking style. He is the producer and director of Day Watch (2006), Wanted (2008), Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (2012), Profile ( 2021) and many many more.Timur is a jack of all trade.

Jay kicks the show off this week with the second round of the potentially award winning, nearly original YSCIO game, “Tag The Track”! Nick & Greg face off to see who can name a popular song in the least amount of time. Will Greg retain his title and repeat his Round 1 performance? Will Nick get enough questions right to make the game close? How long will Jay tolerate being constantly interrupted? There’s only one way to find out…Song: Norah Jones - To LiveNext up, Nick shares a story from NPR about a recent project launched by the Library of Congress to commission music of the Coronavirus pandemic. Inspired by stories collected by the 14th century Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio about the Black Death, the project aims to challenge talented composers to create a work in isolation. A controversial figure in his heyday, he’s now regarded as one of the most important figures in French pop. Histoire de Melody Nelson is arguably Serge Gainsbourg's most coherent and perfectly realized studio album, with the lush arrangements which characterize the majority of his work often mixed here with funky rhythm lines which underscore the musky allure of the music.

This was such a fun episode to record where we discussed everything from dinner parties to playlists to icebreaker jokes. Brendan and Rico shared the title they originally wanted to give their book and their most memorable dinner parties. Definitely an episode not to be missed. This week, the content relates to love lost and life spent in the throes of opiate addiction. The films Drugstore Cowboy and Withnail & I are themed and much of the music was introduced to me in the UK.There is a little bit of the steganogrammic, though I doubt anyone would see it, thus the "stegano" aspect of steganogrammic. The sense I had in composing this podcast was one of turning around to face the demons that torture one, and of addressing them in turn. Equally, and perhaps more importantly represented is a sense of gratitude and an earnest earnestness about lives led. The clip at the end before the Israelites song is profound and I've found it to be almost perversely apropos in the life I've known. The podcast is chapterized.
