Join Dr. Holmes as she interviews researcher and clinician Dr. Will Carroll on the topic of Autism Female Phenotypes. The discussion includes why females may be missed, and the diagnoses females receive before a later autism identification. Dr. Carroll will discuss a missed opportunity of research, and that is information a sister can provide with insight into having a sister on the spectrum. Other topics covered in this discussion: are friendships, eating disorders, depression, and suicide, as well as passionate interests. From Dr. Carroll's Research:From my own research, I found two types of interests: shared and unique interests. In the shared category, the women with ASD shared their interests, specifically with their sisters. These shared interests included media like cartoons and sci-fi shows or entertainment, arts and crafts, and reading. This is in comparison to those interests that were unique to the woman with ASD, such as academics, including history, art, literature, foreign languages, and musical instrument playing.Consider the systemizable factor to these Special Interests. There was a noticeable overlap in the interests, including the woman with ASD enjoying TV shows both by herself and with her sister and the woman with ASD doing crafts or handy work both by herself and with her sister. When the woman with ASD had a trusted companion (sister, parent), they could let go of their Special Interest for a time and engage in hobbies that didn't involve collecting.Considering the Female Autism Phenotype, the theory is that traits of ASD in women are uniquely different from those of men. Though my research did not look at men with ASD and their brothers, research suggests that women with ASD are more likely to have Special Interests more closely aligned with neurotypical women (Harrop et al, 2018). In my own practice, I see a number of women with ASD. Their Special interests include drawing, small gardening, collecting small tokens from an internet or video game they like, and video gaming. These women report liking the video games for the social aspect as well as the story and the achievements they earn while playing the game (Genshin Impact, Animal Crossing).Bio:Dr. Will Carroll is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Georgia. Hey guys, Afshan here! The Mettleset is doing its first running race as a team…and it's all for a good cause. Dawn and I have signed up for the amazing annual Wings for Life World Run, which supports the Wings for Life Foundation for spinal injury research. The race happens around the world on the same day and at the same time - this year being May 7. It's exciting for us to join this year's event because the race is celebrating its 10th year. In 2022 alone, the Wings for Life World Run generated about AED 19,084,170 (€4,700,000) in donations thanks to the 161,892 participants from 192 countries. The UAE edition is happening at 3PM at none other than the Expo City in Dubai. We'll be at the start line with more than 270 or so residents, first-time runners and seasoned athletes who have already signed up the last time I checked. It's a unique race with no predetermined finish line and a Catcher car that you have to escape. The best part - you set your own goal. How's that for being all inclusive? And by participating in this fun run, you will also be helping support crucial medical research as all sign-up proceeds and donations go to the Wings for Life Foundation. To find out more about the race, how to sign up and what to expect, I was joined by this year's Wings for Life ambassador Gada Shaikli, an Obstacle Course Race athlete and long-time runner, who also won last year's edition. Gada also shares tips on how to prepare for the race in this episode. For Dawn, this will be a run after years of not putting those running shoes on and for me, well, my running shoes are going to hit tarmac on a very balmy Sunday afternoon. We're both looking forward to a challenge! Thinking of doing an obstacle course race (OCR) or mud run this spring or summer? Or maybe you've already signed up and now you're thinking, “How can I prep for this thing?” The Foundation: The best and most important thing that you can do is be generally fit and well-rounded. Following a program that builds stamina, strength, endurance, and coordination — like the Daily Street Parking workouts — will prepare you VERY well! In fact, if “all” you do to get ready are the Street Parking Daily Workouts 5-6 days a week — with 2-3 of those days at a relatively high intensity — you'll be adequately prepared for nearly any obstacle course race you sign up for! But, you can also ask yourself a few questions and add in a bit more “focused” work if you have the time and desire to do so.

In the Inside Mike's Mind segment I talk about the interference effect. When you understand how exercise physiology works it helps you discover the best way to set up your training. Certain training will limit adaptations when they compete with each other and this is how strength and conditioning works. I share the details behind the interference effect and how you can minimize it with your training. And finally I chat with SGX Coach Joe Bala. Joe is the owner of Joe Bala Fitness. He is a former engineer turned fitness pro and is currently SGX Level 2 certified, Mental Health Warrior, and Ninja Warrior. After running 60+ Spartan and obstacle course races over the last decade, our guest this week on the podcast gives you some advice on getting through obstacles in races and beyond! After a quick look back at my one and only Spartan race, (5:35) Steve Slater talks about how a Tough Mudder launched his obstacles course racing, which he calls a great equalizer. (12:35) He has specific advice for training to get a stronger grip and core. Steve breaks down what his typical weeks of training are like, from gym work to running with sand bags to burpees. (20:01) As the Bible says, suffering produces perseverance which produces character. That's Steve's running mantra, which he got from a church sermon. The racing also helped him teach a lesson to his 2 sons about mentally pushing. What's his longest time spent on an obstacle course race? And he's done some with 30+ miles of running or 100+ obstacles! (26:17) Why does he keep putting his body through the grueling competitions? His favorite part is making it a family affair. (35:48) At almost 55 years old now, how does he stay mostly injury free? Steve gives us some keys that have to do with rest and what you eat. He's still highly competitive, no matter the age. (41:01) He picks his favorite and least favorite obstacles on a course. And Steve says get in the arena, because it's easy to be brave from a safe distance! Down the road, he's got a goal at the Grand Canyon. (51:25) I close this episode with some final segments: obstacle wisdom from the Bible, me singing the appropriate "Warriors," and a closing prayer. Well I am in between trips so I wanted to get an episode out before I check out on vacation. As usually I have tons of good info to help you train for your next OCR. First up in the Inside Mike's Mind segment, I talk about one of my favorite subjects, Physiology. I know not everyone loves learning how the body responds to exercise so I did my best to keep it simple. But understanding your own physiology helps you create way better workout programs. This was the basis behind my book, Fuel and Fire. I specifically dive into how understanding how your body responds to exercise can help you program to be a better and faster runner. In my research review I discuss a new study out on training to failure. I have discussed this topic before, but this study compared high load versus low load training to failure or not to failure. See who won out for strength and muscle size. And finally in my bonus section I discuss my other favorite topic, Recovery. Recovery is a pretty broad term so I wanted to take a deeper dive on why it is so important. I discuss what fatigue is and the different types of fatigue you may experience. When you understand the type of fatigue you are suffering from you can choose the best recovery method to match that. All this and more in today episode. My guest today is the crazy talented Conner Peterson (@ConnerJPeterson). Conner is one of the most interesting people I know. He is a total human optimization freak. His current obsessions include, Ninja Training, Sky Diving, Tricking, Obstacle Course Races, learning the Guitar, Meditation, Crypto-currency, and more. Right now he's training for a 24-hour obstacle race that will be hosted in Iceland under the northern lights, and he is an aspiring stuntman. His training is super intense and he mentions in this podcast that he throws up or passes out during his workouts at least once a week. He's constantly trying to better himself mentally, physically, and spiritually. During this episode we talk about his childhood, growing up skating, his transition into fighting and fitness, and his wardrobe malfunction during the taping of the TV show American Ninja Warrior. Also in the episode, we talked about how his family is SUPER active. They are constantly on the go, they do obstacle course races and mud runs together, and they are always getting dirty and sweaty outside. The problem is how do you get clean afterwards? You want to go out to dinner, go shopping, or just be comfortable in some clean clothes. Taking a shower and getting clean is so easy and only takes a few minutes to rinse your body, but its NOT always so easy to find someplace to actually get clean when you're miles away from home and if you're trying to rinse off in public. It's impossible to do it right without totally exposing yourself. I actually did my first Tough Mudder last month, and afterwards it was such a pain in the ass to rinse off, especially when you have mud caked in all the wrong places. So to scratch their own itch, Conner's mom, Kressa Peterson, created a really cool invention that she called The Shower Toga. Its a loose fitting garment that you slip on over your clothes, it stays in place with a drawstring that goes around your neck for women or around your waist for men, but it allows you to get undressed underneath. Then you can use a water bottle or a hose and rinse your body off completely underneath. Then, put clean clothes back on all while staying covered and never revealing yourself! It has deep pockets with holes at the ends that allow you to scrub your body and clean those hard to reach spots without flashing anybody by lifting up the bottom. But then you have to deal with all your nasty clothes right? Wrong. The shower toga then converts into a bag that you can throw all your nasty clothes in and be on your way. Its so genius and it has unlimited applications. This is not just a changing towel. Its something you can actually get wet and shower in public. Getting clean while camping, changing after a run and rinsing off, helping the kids change after being at the pool, a surfer that wants to go out with her friends after being in the ocean, a hiker that's all nasty and smelly, literally there are so many uses for it, its crazy. I go to a lot of camping music festivals. Normally its really hard to get a shower. The lines are super long and a lot of times they even cost money. Once I get my shower toga I will have no problem. I can shower at my campsite and change into my clothes outside of my cramped tent. The Shower Toga is being crowd funded on Kickstarter right now and if you back the project for only 19 dollars, you can get your own. Right now the Kickstarter has recieved $10,000 pledged of their $14,000 goal. As of today, there are only 8 days left in the campaign. It ends Saturday, June 17, 2017. Pledge 19 dollars or more and if the project is fully funded by in the next 8 days you will receive your own Shower Toga, and you'll be getting clean and showering in public in no time. GO DO IT PEOPLE. I am not getting paid for this whatsoever, and this is a product that I have personally backed, and I can't wait to get my hands on my own. I wouldn't be sharing this with you unless I truly believed that it was a good product that solves a huge issue that many people have. So go get yourself a shower toga and stop smelling like a dirty bum. Link to article about Wolf Armistice If you would like to support the podcast, please rate 5 stars and review on iTunes.
