What's so crazy about this moment in artificial intelligence is that many of the most credible voices in AI think there's a real chance that this all turns out really, really badly. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently pegged his “chance that something goes really quite catastrophically wrong on the scale of human civilization” between 10% and 25%. Of course, even in the Anthropic CEO's estimation, the most likely scenario is probably a more boring one: artificial intelligence doesn't try to secretly destroy us as we sleep in our beds. But the fact that there's a chance is certainly worth considering.I open our conversation with the parable “The unfinished fable of the sparrows” from Nick Bostrom's Superintelligence.It was the nest-building season, but after days of long hard work, the sparrows sat in the evening glow, relaxing and chirping away.“We are all so small and weak. Imagine how easy life would be if we had an owl who could help us build our nests!”“Yes!” said another. “And we could use it to look after our elderly and our young.”“It could give us advice and keep an eye out for the neighborhood cat,” added a third.Then Pastus, the elder-bird, spoke: “Let us send out scouts in all directions and try to find an abandoned owlet somewhere, or maybe an egg. A crow chick might also do, or a baby weasel. This could be the best thing that ever happened to us, at least since the opening of the Pavilion of Unlimited Grain in yonder backyard.”The flock was exhilarated, and sparrows everywhere started chirping at the top of their lungs.Only Scronkfinkle, a one-eyed sparrow with a fretful temperament, was unconvinced of the wisdom of the endeavor. Quoth he: “This will surely be our undoing. Should we not give some thought to the art of owl-domestication and owl-taming first, before we bring such a creature into our midst?”Replied Pastus: “Taming an owl sounds like an exceedingly difficult thing to do. It will be difficult enough to find an owl egg. So let us start there. After we have succeeded in raising an owl, then we can think about taking on this other challenge.”“There is a flaw in that plan!” squeaked Scronkfinkle; but his protests were in vain as the flock had already lifted off to start implementing the directives set out by Pastus.Just two or three sparrows remained behind. Ryan Chamley is a writer, director, producer as well as the creator of the workplace comedy series ‘Rostered On' which you may have seen on Netflix. His production company, Robot Army is an award-winning production company from Geelong, Australia that specializes in bringing unique and engaging concepts into reality.  In 2016, Robot Army produced and self-funded the 7-episode, long-form web series ‘Rostered On'. Rostered On went on to amass 250,000,000 views online and was acquired world-wide by Netflix (first Australian independent comedy to be acquired by Netflix). The second season of the show was also the first Australian narrative comedy to be commissioned by 7mate. The success of “Rostered On” helped to establish Ryan as a rising talent in the Australian film and television industry, and he has continued to work on a number of other successful projects since then, including in 2022 revisiting the world of Rostered On for a third season titled “Counter Girls”.  Ryan also created ‘Jeremy the Dud', which also reached a significant online audience and attracted interest from several notable production companies and broadcasters and won fans worldwide for its insight into life with a disability. However, this newfound power has also raised concerns about the potential misuse of these technologies, particularly in the realm of mass surveillance and new weapon systems. This write-up explores the ideas behind the deployment of drones and robots and how they could be exploited to carry out nefarious activities, drawing connections to the apocalyptic concept of the "Beast system" in the Book of Revelation (KJV) and the growing transhumanist movement. Drones and robots have come a long way since their inception as military tools and factory machinery. Their increasing autonomy, mobility, and intelligence have expanded their potential uses beyond their initial applications. Today, they are deployed in various industries, including agriculture, logistics, disaster relief, surveillance, and more. The ability to access hard-to-reach locations and perform complex tasks autonomously has made drones and robots replacement of human assets. While the proliferation of drones and robots has ushered in numerous benefits, it has also raised significant concerns about mass surveillance. As the capabilities of drones and robots continue to improve, so does the potential for malicious use. Governments, corporations, or even malicious individuals could exploit these technologies to conduct intrusive mass surveillance. They could monitor people's activities, track their movements, and analyze their behavior, creating a dystopian reality reminiscent of George Orwell's "1984." The Book of Revelation foretells the rise of a "Beast" or a system of control and manipulation in the end times. While interpretations of this concept vary, some scholars have drawn parallels to the potential abuse of power through technological advancements. The unrestrained deployment of drones and robots for mass surveillance could be seen as a modern manifestation of the Beast system, where individuals' freedoms are curtailed and their lives closely monitored. Transhumanism is a philosophical and technological movement that seeks to enhance human capabilities through the integration of advanced technologies into the human body and mind. While transhumanism has soul suck intentions, it also raises concerns about the potential for a divide between the enhanced and unenhanced, leading to a new form of discrimination and control. Drones and robots could play a role in this future, with transhumanist individuals using these technologies to enforce their dominance over others. The widespread adoption of drones and robots has brought tremendous nefarious plans to society and it also poses potential many risks, particularly in the realm of mass surveillance. As we venture further into the age of transhumanism, the integration of technology into human life becomes ever more complex. Striking a balance between technological advancement and ethical considerations is crucial to ensure that these innovations serve the greater good without evolving into tools of oppression and control, reminiscent of the ominous Beast system in the Book of Revelation (KJV).

Jung_E (Korean: 정이), stylised as JUNG_E, is a 2023 South Korean science fiction film written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, starring Kang Soo-yeon, Kim Hyun-joo and Ryu Kyung-soo. The film features the final film appearance of Kang Soo-yeon who died ahead of its release. It premiered on January 20, 2023 on Netflix.Jung_E portrays a desolated Earth in the 22nd century that is no longer habitable due to climate change, and humans are forced to live in man-made shelters built in space. As the humans settle in around 80 of those shelters, three of them declare themselves as the Adrian Republic, attack Earth and other shelters, and cause a civil war between the Allied Force and Adrian Republic.Captain Yun Jung-yi is a legendary mercenary of Allied Forces who led her team to countless successful missions against the Adrian Republic. She has a little daughter, Yun Seo-hyun, who suffers from a lung tumor, and Jung-yi became a mercenary to afford her daughter's medical treatments. The day Seo-hyun gets the surgery, Jung-yi fails her mission and ends up in a coma. Kronoid, an institute in charge of developing AI technologies, convinces her family to agree to clone her brain, promising that they will cover Jung-yi's treatments, her daughter's education and living expenses.Thirty-five years later in 2194, Kronoid clones Jung-yi's brain to develop an AI mercenary, code-named Jung_E. Dr. Yun Seo-hyun is the team leader of research project Jung_E and seeks to memorialize Jung-yi as a hero rather than a failure. Researchers at Kronoid have copied Jung-yi's brain data and put them in android bodies. Through simulations of Jung-yi's final mission, they try to extract combat memory data that could be used to develop an exceptional combat AI. Just like Captain Jung-yi failed her last mission, AI JUNG_E also fails in every simulation of the last mission.Seo-hyun learns that her childhood cancer has returned, and she only has three months left to live. She also learns through the chairman of Kronoid that there is no need to develop combat AI anymore because the Adrian Republic and Allied Forces are entering a treaty. With peace approaching, the company has decided to focus on household services. Seo-hyun discovers one of her team members with a scantily clad Jung_E robot in his apartment, but he claims that Kronoid has tasked him with investigating using the Jung_E models as sex toys. After the last simulation of project Jung_E, Seo-hyun escapes the facility with a Jung_E robot while other combat robots and security forces chase them. Kim Sang-Hoon, the project's director, is revealed to also be a robot with an AI brain. Kim shoots Seo-hyun as she and the Jung_E robot flee via elevated rail. The Jung_E robot fights him off, and he is destroyed when his part of the train falls to the ground. Seo-hyun urges Jung_E to leave her and survive. Chipotle plans to grow like crazy and eventually have 7,000 restaurants in North America. To get there, the company will have to make a whole lot of burritos so to help its employees with the volume, it's turning to robots.The company this week announced an investment in Hyphen, a California-based company specializing in food production robotics. Hyphen's first product is called the Makeline and it's an automated system that uses advanced robotics and a customized operating system to fulfill food orders. The Makeline can handle all digital orders under the counter, out of view of the customers, while staff continue to assemble in-house orders on top of the counter.Hyphen features thousands of sensors and uses artificial intelligence to make sure orders are put together correctly. No beef when you ordered chicken and no unwieldy globs of guacamole that overpower your burrito bowl. The machine also prints customers' names and orders directly on the packaging to further ensure there are no mixups. Hyphen also lets employees know when it's running low on ingredients and it rotates plates so every dish looks neat and tidy when it pops out.For Chipotle, this partnership advances its use of robotics to improve efficiency and the overall experience for customers and employees. It's also not the first time Chipotle has turned to robots for their fast casual dining expertise. The company's Chippy cranks out tortilla chips complete with little imperfections so they don't feel so machine-made.For Hyphen, the Chipotle investment will allow it to accelerate hiring plans, pour more money into R&D and scale their operations.For all of us, it means more robot chefs, which are obviously one of the coolest things the future has to offer.

It was back in April that Walmart announced it was doubling down on robots in its stores to scan shelves and scrub floors hoping to keep labor costs down and open up employees to more fulfilling work.  Well, the roll-out has happened and the results are… mixed.  The human workers are sometimes the ones that feel like machines.  Customers have reportedly fallen asleep on one of the machines, workers have to retrain the machines in some cases, and engineers have had to figure out creative ways to have robots announce themselves to customers so they aren't caught off guard. Drew Harwell, AI reporter for the Washington Post, joins us for how the robots are doing at Walmart. Next, YouTube has stepped into the hate speech minefield.
