So in Watch of the Wolf I found myself in the weird position of trying to really convince a bunch of tiny versions of myself that genocide was a good idea, which was both morally and creatively challenging. 1167 Inside the Reagan White House: A Speechwriter's Secrets on the 1981 Assassination Attempt On March 30, 1981, just weeks into his presidency, Ronald Reagan was nearly assassinated outside the Washington Hilton. The official narrative? A deranged loner obsessed with Jodie Foster. But is that the full story? In this gripping episode, Richard Syrett is joined by Ken Khachigian, Reagan's longtime speechwriter, strategist, and confidant. With a front-row seat to history, Khachigian sheds light on what really happened behind closed doors in the Reagan White House following the assassination attempt. Were there hidden forces at play? Did the deep state have a stake in controlling the narrative? And should President Trump push for the release of classified files—just as he has with the JFK assassination? GUEST: Ken Khachigian is a veteran Republican strategist, speechwriter, and former senior advisor to President Ronald Reagan. As Reagan's chief speechwriter during his historic 1980 campaign and a key figure in his administration, Khachigian helped shape the conservative movement. This week, a16z cofounder Ben Horowitz had a rare and invaluable conversation with Dr. Clarence B. Jones, a pivotal figure in American history. Dr. Jones, who served as speechwriter, attorney, and advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., shared his personal insights on race, inclusion, and the lasting legacy of the civil rights movement in 2025.In their wide-ranging discussion, Dr. Jones reflected on the timeless wisdom of Dr. King, quoting one of the most enduring lines from the "I Have a Dream" speech: “I want my four children to be judged by the content of their character, not by the color of their skin.”“That, to me, is still, that's the template,” Dr. Jones said. “That still remains a template.”Their conversation covered critical themes in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, delving into the history of the movement, the lessons from "Letter from Birmingham Jail," and the profound impact Dr. King's work continues to have today. It was a rare opportunity to hear directly from someone who not only witnessed history but played a key role in shaping it, and we hope you enjoy it. About Dr. Clarence B. Jones:Dr. Clarence B. Jones served as legal counsel, strategic advisor, and draft speechwriter to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from 1960 until Dr. King's assassination in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. During that time, Dr. King depended on Dr. Jones for legal and strategic counsel and assistance in drafting landmark speeches and public testimony. He is credited with writing the first seven paragraphs of the iconic I Have A Dream speech. Across the decades following Dr. King's assassination in 1968, Clarence B. Jones worked to carry on Dr. King's legacy, to continue the nonviolent struggle for social justice, voting rights, and democratic inclusion. He is the founder of the Dr. Clarence B. Jones Institute for Social Advocacy, and also serves as the Founding Director Emeritus of the Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice at the University of San Francisco. Dr. Jones is also the author of three acclaimed books "What Would Martin Say?", "Behind the Dream: The Making of the Speech that Transformed a Nation" and "Last of the Lions". There's uncertainty among the Democrats as Donald Trump prepares to take up the White House reins. The Republican Party has attained a decisive victory, winning the presidency with Donald Trump, majority in the Senate - and holding a strong lead in the House of Representatives. David Litt, a former speechwriter for Barack Obama, says inflation and economic troubles contributed to a difficult environment for the Democrats. "It was really a full-scale shift compared to 2020. I think the biggest thing the Democrats faced was a headwind from inflation - that was a serious problem in the United States." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Chris Willis and guest Michael Franklin, founder and executive director of Speechwriters of Color, dive into the complexities of communicating across a multi-generational workforce and navigating evolving workplace expectations. Why it matters: Understanding how different generations interact in the workplace is crucial to fostering collaboration, increasing engagement, and driving organizational success. The big picture: Good communication is universal, but tailoring messages to resonate with diverse audiences—across generational, geographical, and ideological lines—makes the difference between connection and miscommunication. What's next: Leaders and communicators must work together to bridge these gaps, ensuring every voice is heard while maintaining cohesion within the workforce.

From 2009 to 2017, Sarah Hurwitz worked in the White House, serving as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama and as a senior speechwriter for President Barack Obama. Prior to working in government, Hurwitz was the chief speechwriter for Hillary Clinton on her 2008 campaign for president and a speechwriter for Senator John Kerry and General Wesley Clark during the 2004 presidential election. Hurwitz is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School. These are really impressive credentials, but without any of these Sarah would still be impressive and praise worthy. She reminds me what it means to be good, and no matter what religion or belief system you identify with, I think you'll find heartwarming inspiration in her words and the lessons she learned from these ancient traditions and practices. We also talk about: How a break-up lead her to discover Judaism How the principles of Judaism are applicable to all of our lives Why words are so powerful even the casual things you say How empathy can make you better equipped for your job Why the ethics of modern american law sets a low bar for morality What it was like working for the Obamas (amazing obviously) Our shared love for the Cooked Media guys And, my favorite, if we can stop fighting ourselves we can find real meaning and joy... Sarah is a really special, not to mention, incredibly smart and talented person with a gift for meaningful thoughts, ideas, and words. I could have chatted with her for hours about life.

Guy Snodgrass recently served as director of communications and chief speechwriter to Secretary of Defense James Mattis. A former naval aviator, he served as commanding officer of a fighter squadron based in Japan, A TOPGUN instructor, and a combat pilot over the skies of Iraq. Today he is the founder and CEO of Defense Analytics, a strategic consulting and advisory firm. He is the author of Holding the Line: Inside Trump's Pentagon with Secretary Mattis and his latest book is titled: TOPGUN's Top 10: Leadership Lessons from the Cockpit. Some interesting insights from this episode: · To succeed a TOPGUN, you have to possess three traits: talent, passion, and personality. · Competence is when you have an excellent capability but you operate below that level. Arrogance is when your competence is lower than you anticipate but you act like you're better. · You can achieve anything you put your mind to so long as you're willing to break down the problem and put the resources against it to solve it. · After every simulated dogfight there would be a debrief comparing your recollection of the events with the actual video footage. This created a continual feedback loop to accelerate learning. · President Eisenhower once said: “Plans are worthless but planning is indispensable.” · TOPGUN has a flat organizational structure whereby junior officers are calling a lot of the shots. Decisions are made based on capability and knowledge base, not based on rank. This allows them to get to the best tactical end result. Tomorrow, August 30, the biopic Reagan hits theaters, with Dennis Quaid playing President Ronald Reagan. We're so fortunate on the show today to have a man who knew Reagan well—Ken Khachigian, whose new book Behind Closed Doors: In the Room with Reagan and Nixon, focuses on his relationship with not just Reagan but also President Richard Nixon, as well. Right smack dab on the front cover of the book, which just came out on July 23, Ken is described as a speechwriter, confidant, and strategist to political legends. In today's episode, I ask Ken what role he enjoyed playing most and why, and which role was the most challenging for him. Ken was a longtime aide to President Nixon and was there for both his resignation 50 years ago this month and the Frost/Nixon interviews. Later, he was President Reagan's chief speechwriter. Ken is a veteran of nine presidential campaigns, and in this book takes us in the room with not just one but two presidents. In addition to his work as a successful attorney, Ken became California's premier Republican strategist in elections for governor, senator, and attorney general. He helped Nixon craft his memoirs and wrote notable speeches for Reagan like his first inaugural address, welcome home remarks for hostages taken during the Iran hostage crisis, his acceptance speech at the 1984 Republican National Convention, and, four years later, his farewell address at the 1988 Republican National Convention. Most recently, when it comes to presidential campaigns, he served as a senior advisor on the 1996 campaign of Bob Dole, the 2000 campaign of John McCain, and the 2008 campaign of Fred Thompson. Take a listen to what he has to say. Behind Closed Doors: In the Room with Reagan and Nixon by Ken Khachigian Visit Ken's website at reaganandnixon.com!

In the past few weeks, China's relations with Latin America and the Caribbean have been making headlines. Newsweek published an exclusive story about plans to create a Chinese-run special economic zone on the island of Antigua that will have a port, a dedicated airline, its own customs and immigration procedures, and be able to issue passports. An international crypto services zone will offer opportunities to participate in cryptocurrency operations from mining to dealing. The Americas Quarterly reported that China has expressed interest in building a port complex near the Strait of Magellan at the southern tip of South America, which is considered the most important natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. From there, according to the Americas Quarterly, Beijing could grow its presence in the region and also project influence in Antarctica. And in late April, China held the first China-Latin American and Caribbean States Space Cooperation Forum, which opened with a congratulatory letter from Xi Jinping applauding the high-level space cooperation partnership in which he emphasized the benefits of marrying China's mature space technology with the unique geographic advantage of the countries in the Latin America and Caribbean region. To discuss Chinese interests in and strategy toward the Latin America and Caribbean region–known as the LAC–host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Leland Lazarus. In the limelight on Thursday evening, President Biden seized the opportunity to present his State of the Union address. With eight months to go before facing the polls and his popularity caught in a slump, the president firmly targeted his predecessor, referred to only as 'him'. Throughout his address, the president performed a delicate tightrope walk as he targeted not only the former leader but also the Republican representatives attending the joint session of Congress. "Recognize this: the former Republican President essentially told Putin, 'You have free reign,'" was the charge Biden made, just moments into his address. This came as the initial salvo in a series of thirteen references to his predecessor, who emerged the GOP's presumptive nominee this week. While the Democrats reveled in the forthrightness of the president's speech, Republicans felt it was over the top. To veteran politico Bill McGurn, who has seen his fair share of political speeches as former chief speechwriter for President George W. Bush, this was perhaps the most partisan State of the Union he has ever witnessed. The sense of partisanship was underscored by McGurn, who concurrently contributes to the Wall Street Journal as a member of the editorial board and columnist, and serves as a Fox News contributor. To him, the address was bereft of Republicans outreach and carried one message loud and clear: the resurgence of big government, in full swing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Journalist Nate Rawlings, who spent a stint as a speechwriter for then-Vice President Joe Biden, joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about the politics (and nuances) of plagiarism. Rawlings discusses how plagiarism accusations derailed Joe Biden's presidential run in 1987. He examines how the right-wing activist-led plagiarism accusations against former Harvard President Claudine Gay fit into the context of prior plagiarism scandals, and considers the possibility that new technologies like AI will intensify future politically motivated attacks. He also reflects on why some plagiarism allegations stick and shift opinion, and others don't.
