The secret place is where your relationship with God is cultivated, where His anointing flows, and where true transformation begins. Even Jesus, the Son of God, prioritized time alone with the Father. His ministry was not about gaining recognition but about walking in obedience to the will of God. If we desire to impact lives and carry the power of the Holy Spirit, we must start in the secret place. Here are ten Scriptures that show the importance of the secret place and what it means for our walk with God. 1. Mark 1:35 “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” 2. Psalm 91:1-2 “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.'” 3. Matthew 6:6 “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” 4. John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” 5. Isaiah 40:31 “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” 6. Luke 5:16 “So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.” 7. Exodus 33:11 “So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” 8. James 4:8 “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” 9. Psalm 27:4 “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.” 10. For those of you who have been with me on this journey through influence marketing for a while, you know that I get really excited when we can zero in on the concept of influence rather than influencers. The whole theme of my book Winfluence, and a lot of what we talk about here on Winfluence, the podcast, focuses on the fact that removing the "R" from the term means we have a more holistic approach and success with leveraging third parties to influence audiences to take action. In the world of sales and marketing, the term Influence gets thrown around, but it often harkens people back to the seminal book on persuasion from Dr. Robert Cialdini called Influence. It was published in 1984 and is still selling today. In fact, the most recent update actually amended his six principles of persuasion. There are now seven which my guest and I get into today on the show. That guest is Brian Ahearn. He is a Cialdini disciple. So much so that he's even been certified as a Cialdini instructor and teaches techniques in influence and persuasion to corporate sales teams, marketing departments and beyond for a living. I chatted with Brian on Digging Deeper, Cornett's podcast a few months back. He told me then he was working on a new book.  That new book is out. It's called The Influencer. And he's here today to talk about it, but also to walk us through the principles of influence he teaches and how they can apply to our own credibility and influence, but also in practical manifestations like choosing the right influencers to use for your influence marketing efforts.  The book, by the way, is a story of fiction … a business allegory if you will … about a character named John Andrews, and his path to learning to become influential. I loved the book. It reminded me of a similar parable approach to business principles which is probably my favorite business book ever called Happy Work, by my pal Chris Reimer.  Brian will tell you more about it and influence in today's episode, which is presented by Tagger. Do you even know what true influence looks like? We get lost in the day-to-day of influencer marketing, where we count on people who post interesting things on social media to persuade their audiences to try and buy our products and forget the core thing we need to do … really influence people. Does seeing a product in the hands of a person you follow on Instagram have a real impact on you? Probably not. I follow Patrick Janelle, @aguynamedpatrick, who has been a guest on the show before. His instagram feed is what I call an aspirational one. I aspire to be as stylish in my dress, home decor and what-not, as he is. Never mind that I won't ever be.  But just because he wears a fancy watch or a perfectly tailored blazer or the latest comfy but snazzy dress shoes from Del Toro, or whomever, doesn't mean I'm going to make a conscious decision to buy those products. In fact, I don't wear a watch, and seldom wear blazers or dress shoes.  Over time, it might be that when I'm ready to buy a new pair of dress shoes, I think, “I like what Del Toro has. Let's go look at them.” I may never make a direct connection to Patrick, but it'll have an effect through frequency of impressions.  Still, that's a fairly long-game and light form of influence. And some would say is not true influence.  I wrote about a shining example of true influence in my book. Chapter 12 of Winfluence - Reframing Influencer Marketing to Ignite Your Brand dives into influence marketing as a proxy for what we generally know as public relations. In it, I tell the story of Naakh Vysoky.  I'll read the passage to illustrate true influence for you in today's commentary.  This episode of Winfluence - The Influence Marketing Podcast is brought to you by Tagger. But I see that broken down by Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and so on. I then have a timeline chart so the brand team can see how the volume of content has hit over the last couple of months. Page two breaks it all down by creator. So I get to see all those performance metrics by influencer. This makes it super easy to see who is performing well for us and who might need some help, paid spend to supplement their post and so on. Next I have a list of the top Instagram posts for the campaign and their corresponding metrics, then Facebook. Then YouTube … you get the picture. The drag-and-drop data options allowed me to build the report my client wanted and finds useful in a matter of minutes. You can have that too if you switch to Tagger. I remember in 1996, Eric and I were really into soccer and the MLS (Major League Soccer) had just started and the closest team to where we lived was the San Jose Clash (now called the San Jose Earthquakes). My dad used to take Eric and I to these games and we would have a blast. I used to idolize these star soccer players that were on the Clash. At the time, I didn’t know any better, I put them on pedestals and said, “one day I want their lifestyles and to be like them.” Truth is, I only saw one side of the coin…the star soccer player lifestyle, the money, the flashy cars, etc. There are always two sides of the coin though… It wasn’t until I started doing a lot of my own personal growth work, hired a life coach, went to see a personal growth coach in Colorado, started reading a lot, and had gone through my own life experiences that I realized “why am I putting these athletes and people on pedestals?” Because I didn’t love these players or people, I just idolized them for so long because I only saw one side of the coin and that was a major issue. Eric and I had a conversation about this, and we came up with an idea to experiment with a podcast episode on having our assistant pick 10 quotes, sayings, or concepts from people we feel have impacted and influenced us over the years. The rules were…we pick one saying, quote, or concept out of a hat, and we have to elaborate on it based off our own experiences and we give a practical application regarding it. Not sure how this will go, but should be fun

RUNNING EAGLES Middle school is one of the most silliest concepts I have ever experienced. You take a group of young people that are beginning to go through puberty and put them in a place where they are herded by age. Then you don't have the grades they receive go on their transcripts and academic records so they are essentially in academic limbo? Not a good move. What does the combination of all these factors make? Well I'd say chaos! At least that was my biased experience. You might think Middle School was wonderful but this is my blog (smile). AI INVASION (ARTIFICIAL INFLUENCE) The hottest brands on the planet of apparel in our world were emblazoned their logos on starter sports jackets parka style. University of Las Vegas Nevada (UNLV), Los Angeles Raiders and Georgetown Hoya's were very popular because they must have had brilliant marketing teams. Why am I telling you this? Well...I didn't like red as a color. No particular reason I just thought it was too loud. My dad and I were avid Philadelphia Eagles fans. We were locked into their football games rain snow or shine, when a game was on we found a way to get it even if we walked into a Tavern (seemed things were much laxed as far as kids being able to watch games where alcohol was served). We were diehards as fans. So what did my dad decide to gift me with? An original Eagles parka jacket! Holy Grail or Holy Fail? When that thing arrived... Wow! Talk about role reversal. The insignificant invisible kid became super visible. Kids stopping me in the hall asking me about where I got it from (he ordered it from out of state and it took weeks to secure it (came from far) no internet. All of a sudden I had influence. Kids were walking with me in the hallway and surrounding me. The little crush I had that had previously ignored me was begging to wear the jacket. This my friends is a sample of what I call false influence. In school and translating to the adult world the currency is popularity. Yet with all the clamoring and noise that happened in my life, what remained was shallow material obsession that would fade as soon as the newer shiny object would appear. Very few people have had the types of life experiences Pete Turner has had. His experience as a soldier and then later as a cultural consultant to the military and U.S. State Department during the Bosnian and Afghanistan conflicts gives him a perspective and skill set far beyond those of the average person. And you may wonder why a guy with that background is on a sales focused podcast. It’s because so much of what Pete has learned about culture and how to deal with people applies directly to the business and sales world. You’ll get it after you listen to this episode. It’s a bit longer than usual but you won’t care. It’s that good. Culture is like gravity, it is everywhere. Salespeople need to understand the culture they step intoClick To Tweet 4th generation warfare and its relevance to business cultures. The term “4th Generation Warfare” is not a commonly heard phrase but it’s one that’s being used more and more to describe the way that warfare situations have changed in the last decade or two. Pete Turner brings his expertise in that realm into this episode of In The Arena to illustrate how there are many more things going on in every culture than most leaders and decision makers are aware of. Spying (counterintelligence) is not really all that different from sales. Pete Turner spent a good deal of his military career in what is called “counterintelligence.” It’s spying, plain and simple - getting into the everyday life of a culture to discover important information that can help your side of the conflict. But Pete realized early on that his job was not to locate or identify the bad guys, his job was to get to know the culture and the people, to care about them, and to understand what his side of the conflict could to to win a lasting peace after the conflict was over. In a military conflict, The American way is often to come into the situation with the assumption that help is needed and that “we” are the ones to give it. But Pete Turner says that his experience as a counterintelligence officer and cultural consultant to the military has shown him something entirely different. It’s impossible to truly help if you don’t know the real situation on the ground and military leaders and diplomats are characteristically bad at getting that kind of intel.
