In Episode 69, Peace Adzo Medie (author of His Only Wife) talks about why she decided to use fiction to speak out about gender politics, the importance of women asserting themselves, and when first started writing (it was when she was very young!). Please note that this episode was recorded before His Only Wife was announced as Reese’s Book Club’s October pick. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights Why Peace decided to look at gender politics (the subject she teaches) through fiction. What she learned from speaking with women who are victims of domestic violence (including why they sometimes choose to stay in these relationships). Why she decided not to focus include violence in His Only Wife. How common arranged are in Peace’s experience. How women are a key part of politics, economics, and social life in Ghana. The importance of the day-to-day things women do to assert themselves. How the term “respect” is sometimes used to push women to respect men and the problematic treatment of “disrespectful” women. Which of the three central female characters Peace aspires to be. Why she chose to let Muna exist mostly in the background of the story and whether she ever considered writing portions of the book from Muna’s perspective. How Peace decided what the ending would be and whether that changed at all as she was writing. When Peace first started writing (she was young!) and why she started writing when she did. A bit about Peace’s next novel (which she’s already written). The second series of In Writing is here in the midst of a pandemic, and while going into writers’ workspaces may not be practical for a while, that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend. This week, from my duvet fort in London, I speak to Curtis Sittenfeld in her small, distraction-free study (which she likens to Harry Potter’s under-stair bedroom) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Curtis is the author of five bestselling novels, including Prep, American Wife and Eligible, and a book of short stories, You Think It, I’ll Say It; she’s now promoting her sixth novel, Rodham, which tantalisingly imagines what might have happened if Hillary Clinton had decided not to marry Bill. In our interview, she shares her insight into structuring a book (and why that process is so crucial); the value of a well-placed sex scene; and how to “set yourself up for writing success” with some serious time management.

Today Chelsey and Sara are trying something a little different and discussing a short story. First, we’ll deep dive into the dishy, gossipy, and glitzy world of Edith Wharton’s Roman Fever (this conversation sounds more like a discussion of The Bachelor than a work of classic lit!) and then we’ll share some contemporary authors who remind us of Wharton and short story collections we’re eager to read. Today’s discussion includes:   Our relationships with short stories and why this one in particular made our jaws drop. Why Edith Wharton is the perfect classic author for lovers of Gossip Girl, Gilmore Girls, and anyone who loves reading about “rich people problems.” The contemporary author Chelsey realized was the perfect pairing for Wharton’s sassy and drama-filled books.   Plus, as always, we’re recommending lots of contemporary books along the way, including short story collections we love and our favorite rich people problems books.   Read Roman Fever online for free: https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/pleasureofthetext/files/2016/10/Roman-Fever.pdf   Books discussed in today’s episode:  Big Little Lies and The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty (29:03) The Garden Party and Other Stories Katherine Mansfield (30:08) Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (31:10) The Six Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (31:40) The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney (32:22) All this Could be Yours by Jami Attenberg (32:24) Succession (32:30) How Long til Black Future Month by N.K. Even random days deserve a good book. My books of choice include contemporary fiction and literary fiction, and every once in awhile I like to throw short stories, a memoir, or some historical fiction in the mix. I love using my Instagram like Tinder: a place where books and book lovers can meet and hook up. My writing and blogging life started in 2005 after my youngest son was born. I self-published a book, Living with Cheese Eaters and Bald-Headed Monkeys, in 2006 based on my weekly newspaper humor column about motherhood, Mama Wants More. I (briefly) blogged for Disney on what eventually became their site, Babble. Through the years, my blog has naturally evolved as I have. I made the decision in 2018 to refocus and rename my blog for one reason: books and reading are what I love most. I also love my two teenage boys and my husband who have piles of books of their own. Growing up in Oklahoma and having lived in California for the last 13 years has given me the best of both worlds. Along with reading, I love to cook and I habitually redecorate my house. I’m legally blind and a New Year’s baby.  Support the Podcast Support on Patreon - When you support the podcast on Patreon for $5/month, get bonus podcast episodes and other goodies! As an English major and Benjamin Franklin Honors Scholar, I continued devouring every book and magazine I could get my hands on and dreaming up stories (most of which didn’t take place along the Oregon Trail). Post-college, I shipped out to bucolic Vermont to teach creative writing and Pilates to high school kids at a summer arts camp. There, I picked blueberries, ran across rolling hills, and realized I was not nearly mature enough to be teaching anyone much of anything. And so I moved to Manhattan and broke into magazine publishing, starting at Glamour and then moving on to Redbook and next Self, where I was Features Editor. I worked on stories about relationships and sex, parenting, social activism, career and finances, and well-being; I interviewed the occasional V.I.P. (including Michelle Obama and both Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, a.k.a. Coach and Mrs. Taylor for Friday Night Lights fans); and I gathered material for what would eventually become my debut novel, PRETTY IN INK. After nearly a decade in publishing, I decided I was finally ready to try my hand at teaching again. So I waved goodbye to magazines and began my Master’s of English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. I took classes on Shakespeare and adolescent literature, and talked books with teenagers. I then joined the faculty of NEST+m, a Manhattan public high school, as the A.P. Literature and Creative Writing teacher, plus advisor of the literary magazine, the yearbook, and National Honor Society. During my three years of teaching, I aspired to be a slightly more down-to-earth reincarnation of my favorite fictional teacher, Miss Jean Brody. These days, I work as a scriptwriter at BrainPOP, an animated educational site for kids. I spend my days researching topics as diverse as Nuclear Fusion, Emily Dickinson, and the Tuskegee Airmen, and then translating what I’ve learned into an engaging, narrative format. My scripts get made into short films to be shown in classrooms grades 4-10, nationwide and around the world. I live in Brooklyn, NY with my husband and 1-year-old daughter. About Georgia Hunter Author Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to write. I penned my first “novel” when I was four years old, and titled itCharlie Walks the Beast after my father’s recently published sci-fi novel, Softly Walks the Beast. When I was eleven, I pitched an article—an Opinion piece on how I’d spend my last day if the world were about to come to an end—to the local newspaper. Since that debut in the Attleboro Sun Chronicle, my personal essays and photos have been featured in places like the New York Times “Why We Travel,” in travelgirl magazine, and on Equitrekking.com. I’ve also taken on the role of freelance copywriter in the world of adventure travel, crafting marketing materials for outfitters such as Austin Adventures and The Explorer’s Passage. In 2000, a family reunion opened my eyes to the astounding war stories of my grandfather and his family. Eight years later, armed with a digital voice recorder and a moleskin notebook, I set off to unearth and record my family’s story. I spent nearly a decade traversing the globe, interviewing family and digging up records from every possible source I could think of, eventually piecing together the bones of what would become my novel, We Were the Lucky Ones.   Support the Podcast ShareIf you like the podcast, I’d love for you to share it with your reader friends…in real life and on social media. ''Popular but intellectual, accessible but mysterious'' (NPR), Curtis Sittenfield's bestselling novels-including Prep, American Wife, and Sisterland-offer blueprints of the inner architecture of such diverse female protagonists as a wayward boarding school student, a former First Lady, and an identical twin with psychic abilities. Her most recent novel, Eligible, is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice starring a Cincinnati-born magazine writer. Ordinary People. Ordinary Things. with Melissa Radke

I am broadcasting live from the Social Event of the Season. Even though I had been planning and talking about the event, I got nervous right before and even considered not going. The event turned out to be even more beautiful, precious, and fun than I thought it would be. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. The theme for the event was Live Known and that is something that has been resonating with me often. I am comfortably seated on a recliner and speaking about Live Known. It’s a conversation between me and my many hundreds of newest closest friends. If you are tired of hiding and standing on the sidelines of your very own life, I suggest you join us next year for the social event of the season 2019. You can find Melissa here: Podcast Web Page Facebook Page @MsMelissaRadke on Instagram @msmelissaradke on Twitter Show Notes [02:47] The Social Event of the Season was filled with women from all over the United States. [02:53] By the end of the week, these women who didn't know each other were exchanging emails, pictures, selfies, phone numbers, and hugs. [03:09] Live Known is what you will be hearing about today. This is a conversation between me and my hundreds of newest closest friends. [04:14] If you are tired of hiding and standing on the sidelines of your very own life, I suggest you join us next year for the Social Event of the Season 2019. [04:44] How it's a popular choice to live a life but not really Live Known. It is functional to just exist. [05:10] A life like that will get you from point A to point B. Just getting from A to B is not the type of life I want for you. [06:08] The essence of truly living is found within the whole context of scripture. [07:15] The whole of scripture is about living a life and doing something that you never thought you would be able to do. [08:53] You are made from a love that cannot be contained. What if the life that we are given was meant to be lived authentically? [10:57] What does it really mean to live known? [11:24] Catfishing means to lure someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona. [12:09] One in five smartphone searches are for pornography. 68% of divorces are from one spouse falling in love with someone knows over the Internet. [14:01] It's easy to hide. We can hide behind our screens, our husbands, our kids, or anything. It is easy. We can just lie and deny. [15:29] The problem with hiding when we are unsatisfied is that we are refusing to take responsibility for things that seem like letdowns. [17:14] To live known let's just tell the truth. [18:29] My counselor told me it was time to stop throwing and attending baby showers while grieving for loss. [19:30] I began to tell the truth. [19:57] How to Live Known. [19:57] 1. Come to a full understanding of who you are. [22:16] Who you are is far more valuable than what you want. You have to start with who you are. [23:06] We are what we believe we are. [24:31] 2. Learn whose you are. Who do you belong to? Where does your loyalty lie? [25:21] I'm older and wiser, and I'm all in. I've seen the world, and I'm done fooling around. [25:47] Jesus is home base and I always go back to home base. [26:27] 3. We must know where we are. [27:44] We are all in. We have started a new business, and we are all in. We have spent a lot of money on online promotion, and we are broke half the time, but man we are having a lot of fun. [28:25] Let's just tell the truth. If we are broke, sick, have hurt feelings or feel left out just tell the truth. [28:46] If you know whose you are then where you are is just momentary. [28:59] 4. We have to be okay with who comes along and who doesn't. It is okay to let people go who aren't friends. [30:11] "They didn't leave your life, I moved them." God [31:07] I set boundaries with my family, and I believe our relationship is getting healthier because of the boundaries that I set. [31:22] If they love you, it'll be a little bit of a change, but they'll stick around and everyone will be the better for it. [31:40] You are the sum of your five closest friends. Show me your friends and I'll show you your future. [31:54] My future is going places as is yours. Choose wisely my friends. Thanks for joining us on Ordinary People Ordinary Things. Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Read. Today our guys it Curtis Sittenfeld, author of You Think It, I’ll Say It: Stories published in April by Random House. Curtis is the bestselling author of five novels. Those books have been selected by the NYT, Time, EW and People for many Ten Best lists, optioned for TV and film and translated into 30 languages. Her short stories have appeared in the WP, Esquire and her non-fiction has appeared in the NYT, Time, Vanity Fair, The Atlantic and Slate. In this first collection Curtis writes stories about Donald Trump (I wake up every morning and my first thought is “Donald J. Trump is President of The United States of America!!!) and a package of other short stories that deal with women in right now America, all navigating this present and complicated culture with its norms and weirdness and allows these protagonists to deal with friendship, deceit, family, politics (as I mentioned) and of course social media. Their stories are sad, poignant, funny, triumphant at times and tragic at others. In all, the great thing about these stories is that we feel, after reading each, that we have dealt with a real person and a real story.

Originally from the state of Massachusets, Matthew is now Nashville based after being a long-time resident of Los Angeles.  His roots rock and Americana style is familiar with audiences all around the U.S. through his various songwriting partnerships, and ultimately as a diligent touring solo artist. At home playing lead on electric guitar in his studio recordings, he is more likely to have an acoustic guitar in his hands with songs that fit neatly into the sensibilities of giants like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan. And with his new full-length recording entitled “Heart of my Hometown” slated for release in 2017, it is no wonder, as the product is produced by Grammy Award winning producer and engineer, David Bianco, who's credits include all of the aforementioned, as well as Mick Jagger, Lucinda Williams, and many more of diverse styles. We feature excerpts from both 2017's forthcoming release, “Heart of my Hometown”, and 2014’s “Waits for a storm to Find” throughout our discussion. Tracks Featured Throughout Episode #011: Ladder to the Stars - Heart of My Hometown Wildflowers on the Highway - Heart of My Hometown Algebra - Heart of My Hometown Back Into Your Heart - Waits For A Storm to Find Cheated Time - Heart of My Hometown I Can’t Look At Your Face - Waits For A Storm to Find Carry Me Home - Waits For A Storm to Find Until That Echo - Heart of My Hometown Don’t You Think It’s Time - Heart of My Hometown Heart of My Hometown - Heart of My Hometown
