Jake Schwartz is a serial entrepreneur, investor and advisor. Until 2020, Jake Schwartz served at CEO of General Assembly (GA), the global leader in education and career transformation, which he co-founded in 2011. He grew GA to over 1,000 employees on five continents. In 2018, GA was acquired by The Adecco Group. Jake Schwartz co-founded and serves as Chair of Brave Health, a mission-driven company focused on expanding access to high-quality, affordable care for mental health and addiction. Jake Schwartz was named E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year in 2014 and one of Crain's “40 under 40” in 2015. Jake holds a BA from Yale and an MBA from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a former CFA Charterholder. When you hear the founding story of any startup, it can often feel like it was destined. That the end was clear at the beginning and the founders held an unwavering gaze.We often think launching a successful company requires:Defining roles from day oneHolding to an unchanging visionWork through a clear path to get there. That's one way to do it!But what if there's another approach? What if building a successful startup isn't about following a strict formula, but about embracing serendipity and intuition?Jake Schwartz, Co-Founder and former CEO of General Assembly, didn't have a conventional playbook. Looking back a decade later, he felt like they were forming a band.Just get together, start creating, figuring things out as you go.What I took away from this discussion:Passion > perfect plan. Flexibility > rigidity early on. Evolution > clear vision.By following their intuition and leaning into serendipity, Jake and his co-founders discovered a unique formula for success.Learn more about Jake and Brave Health | Websitehttps://bebravehealth.com/Connect with Alisa! Keith Neumeyer: The Pricing System for Gold and Silver is Broken

Tom welcomes back Keith Neumeyer, President & CEO of First Majestic Silver Corp. Keith explains why the world needs enormous amounts of metals for electrification and carbon objectives. He says, "We will never be fully off oil and gas but we can reduce it given time." He is a fan of hydrogen and nuclear solutions for energy. The mining industry continues to be held back and demonized. Mining methods are gradually improving. It takes time however to implement and build solutions in a capital-starved market. The creation of new mines takes years and sometimes decades. Tech companies are too focused on the short-term and don't understand the complexity of resource development. The top five high tech companies have a market cap of five trillion. While the top fifty mining companies are worth a fraction of that industry. There are no real substitutes for silver. Companies like Dupont have tried with limited success. By 2022 the world will need 140 million ounces of silver just for solar panels. This is a 30-40 percent YOY increase. Keith discusses silver recycling and why supplies of similar seem limited. It will require considerably higher prices to recover silver and bring these metals to refiners and recyclers. The recycling business is quite difficult and metals are hard to recover from e-waste. He is concerned about the pricing structures around metal and believes the Comex needs to go away. First Majestic's approach is to sell bars directly to industry and thus often bypass the futures market. The mining sector has been undereducated for some time and Latin America is now filling in the gap for talent in engineering and mining. The mining sector is having a harder time as the population moves to greener and increasingly socialist mindsets. The mining sector will have to be more aggressive if humanity is going to achieve its objectives. We know that successful leaders lead with a vision, and there is no better example of it than our guest for today's show, Crystal Maggelet. Tom welcomes back Keith Neumeyer, President & CEO of First Majestic Silver Corp. Keith explains why the silver market's characteristics, in particular, attracted his interest. During the last year, the production of silver has declined while consumption has been flat. Typically silver is mined at a ratio of about 8 to 1 compared with gold, and therefore silver may be rarer than most people think. In theory, silver today should be worth 1/8th of gold. Keith is reasonably confident the gold-silver ratio will surpass thirty in this bull market. Much of silver is coming from above-ground reserves, and he now feels that retail investors and not only industry demand will drive this market. The current retail investor silver squeeze movement has a significant effect on supplies, and more importantly, an entire generation of new people are now aware of silver. Keith discusses how quickly First Majestics shares trade and why there is a significant short position. The closest comparison with today's equity markets is likely the 1999-2000 period. There is a lot of excess exuberance in these markets, and we may be reaching a severe correction. Often directors of companies don't hold any stocks. When investing, you want to see management have significant investment in the companies they manage. It's best to get into stocks when no one else wants them, and you know they are good companies. Keith explains how mining is usually a slow industry that is reluctant to adopt new technology. He discusses the advantages that new technology brings in reducing costs and the significant increases they have obtained in metal recovery. He discusses the problems with holding back supplies of the metal. These issues include storage issues, accounting problems, and an additional elements of risk. From running Barstool Sports to consulting the FBI on fraud, to being the most prolific photographer in the history of hip-hop, to creating and directing some of the highest grossing films in movie history, to owning one of the top hotels in the world, to engaging NBA fans from the bubble, to operating everyone's favorite news source, Reddit – I am pleased to share all of my amazing guests with you. We will cover their highs, their lows, what makes them who they are and a few even drop some never before told stories. All Episodes launch March 10th. So, who am I? I'm Steve Parker Jr., the CEO of Levelwing – an advertising agency fortunate to have delivered over a dozen consecutive Super Bowl campaigns and be recognized as ‘most effective in media' by a jury of media industry peers. I'd define myself as a lifelong dreamer and entrepreneur that enjoys creating new things and meeting new people. This has led me down an amazing road of experience, lessons, stories and people – some of which I'm bringing to you on this podcast. You need more reason to listen? Ok, I get it. Just Imagine this… You grew up in Nashville back in the 70s and 80s when it was still a country town, but your first concert was N.W.A. You attend Harvard, no… make that Western Kentucky University, where every day for four glorious years you are fortunate to experience football royalty – the Harbaugh way. Upon graduation you happen to step into the Internet, just as it is being born – at a Fortune 500 company that wants the 21-year-old you to help figure the damn thing out – the information superhighway that is. So, you do, and you actually deliver some creative things – like live streaming the first birth (yes, a baby being born) on the internet, launching one of the largest healthcare websites on the internet, not once – but three times. You move to New York City and take jobs at two start-ups – both have IPOs, but you don't make a penny. Then you turn down not one but two jobs at Google in 2000 – consider that a financial error, “turn and cough,” two actually. Shortly after, you start your own start-up which nearly everyone bust your balls for because “it's a stupid time to quit a job and start a business.” Yet, 19-years later after bootstrapping the business from the ground up, no loans, no investors, no debt and nearly getting KO'd once in the 10th round – you stand proud of building something with great people and great partners and you all still have full control. Along the way, not only do you find your happy, mad, sad, stressed, calm, joyful, unsure, imperfect and absolutely confident emotions in the very bumpy path you are traveling; you also find yourself on the largest of stages… delivering over a dozen Super Bowl campaigns, being named an E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year, co-founding a venture capital firm, swimming in the indoor pool of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's house, helping fund the first studio album for Lil Dicky – Professional Rapper – which certifies Gold, and you meet your wife who's a real life New York City Ballet ballerina. True story, and you can't even dance that well. So, that's you! Well… me actually. But if it were you, you would give a listen to the podcast and most likely share it with others because that is what you do. If you hate it, send me an email and tell me why; because I really appreciate and respect you for reading this...

Collin welcomes returning guest Keith Neumeyer to the program to discuss all-things silver. Keith is the President and CEO of First Majestic Silver Corp. Keith is seeing an increase in inquiries from big institutional funds regarding silver. It seems the high silver to gold ratio has caught the attention of many investors. He believes everything should trade on real supply-demand fundamentals. As an industry, silver is mined at an 8 to 1 ratio with gold. This ratio should correct at some point much lower, perhaps as little as 25 to 1. Keith expects that we will see triple-digit silver. Silver is a precious metal, an industrial metal, but often not considered it is also a strategic metal. Everything we do as a human race requires silver from transportation to electronics, and Keith says, "We're not going to produce enough silver to meet the demands of the world." Time Stamp References: 1:00 - Silver ratio waking up big institutions. 2:20 - Inflation, lower interest rates, and gold. 3:50 - Outlook for silver and the silver-gold ratio. 5:25 - Silver's demand profile. 8:40 - Comparing historical markets. 12:15 - Mining sector cyclicality and greed. 15:00 - Why his focus is on the commodity sector. In this episode of #InsightsPodcast series, we have Dheeraj Pandey, Chairman and CEO of Nutanix, taking us through his journey of building a generational company, its IPO story, and how he built a culture of reading and learning at his organisation. As we continue with the #InsightsPodcast series, we head to Silicon Valley to meet Dheeraj Pandey, Chairman and CEO, Nutanix. The company helps customers modernise their data centres and run applications of any scale on the cloud. Dheeraj co-founded Nutanix a decade ago and took the company public on NASDAQ in 2017. Today, the company trades at a $5 billion+ market cap. Dheeraj's entrepreneurial spirit has been recognised with several prestigious awards including Dell's Founders 50 and E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year, Silicon Valley. On this podcast, Dheeraj takes us through his journey of building a generational company, his vision of making computing invisible, and the Nutanix IPO journey. Dheeraj grew up in Patna, finished his undergrad as a Computer Science major at IIT Kanpur, and then decided to pursue a PhD at UT Austin. He completed his master's and dropped out of the PhD programme to pursue a career in the computer science industry. Before starting Nutanix, Dheeraj spent a decade working in the industry with stints at a couple of startups and one large company (Oracle) building software for data servers. Read to grow Talking about his transition from engineering roles to that of a CEO to build a business, Dheeraj gives an analogy of how the product and the go-to-market strategy are like the heart and brain of the business and over time he learnt to straddle both ends of the spectrum driven by his passion for building the bridge between technology and business. Dheeraj has always believed in learning from the experiences shared by his advisors and is an avid reader. Learning from other entrepreneurial journeys, he believes, gives one precedence and courage to deal with the highs and lows of the roller coaster ride that building a business can be. He explains that as a company, Nutanix has built an organisation culture that cares about reading. “It gives you courage, parallels, frameworks, and principles to think about. It's a great de-stressor,” he says. Disrupt to stay relevant Switching gears and sharing lessons for entrepreneurs, Dheeraj starts by talking about the importance of disrupting yourself with a long-term view versus becoming irrelevant. He says, “You should act as a competitor to yourself because if you don't, someone else will, and it will be a lot more uncomfortable to deal with the unknowns of a competitor.” This was realised at Nutanix when they decided to give away their software to their hardware partners allowing them to compete with Nutanix (shaving of 26 percent of top line) and again when Nutanix made the shift from software to subscription. Both the times involved a complete change in business model at the scale of a publicly traded company. These bold moves allowed Nutanix to disrupt themselves and extend their reach, stay more relevant as the customer's tastes changed. Dheeraj talks about how businesses/entrepreneurs who postpone gratification and think about long-term gains mostly constitute large outcomes. The largest companies have taken long-term bets, something that the mob doesn't have the courage or fortitude to do. That said, long-term goals must be check-pointed with short-term ones, without losing sight of the larger picture. This for Nutanix came out in the form of the 5Hs- Hungry, Humble, Honest, Heart, and Humour. On a closing note, Dheeraj shares how at the end of the day, family is as much a partner in the entrepreneurial journey as you are. “You are at war out there and when you go home you don't want to be at war. Hence it is so important to reduce that friction. You have to believe that your professional goal is something that you share with your spouse.”

In this Fund81 podcast interview, Dave Balter, the CEO of one of our MergeLane portfolio companies, Flipside Crypto, shared his perspective on investing in the cryptocurrency space. I invited Dave to join us for four reasons: He is one of the most engaging and entertaining speakers I know. He has the ability to explain complex things in an easy-to-understand way - something I have found rare in the cryptocurrency space. He is obsessed with and extremely knowledgeable about cryptocurrency. Because he is both a serial entrepreneur and a venture investor, he has an interesting perspective from both sides of the table. About Flipside Crypto Flipside Crypto has developed algorithms to track cryptocurrency performance indicators. Flipside licenses this data and uses its technology to provide investment opportunities for accredited investors via its indexes. The company also manages the process of acquiring and storing cryptocurrency to alleviate the headache of potentially confusing things like encryption and digital wallets. Flipside closed a $3.4 million financing round led by True Ventures three months after MergeLane’s investment. Coinvestors include the Chernin Group, Resolute Ventures, Boston Seed Capital, Converge, and Founder Collective. About Dave Balter Dave Balter is the founder and CEO of Flipside Crypto, a provider of data solutions and investment vehicles for cryptocurrencies. Dave has spent most of his career as an innovation‐obsessed builder of companies, most often as a founder and CEO, but occasionally as a board member, advisor or investor. Dave is also an active venture investor and M&A professional. As an operator, Dave is probably best known for Smaterer, which he founded, led, and sold to Pluralsight in 2014 and BzzAgent, which he founded, led, and sold to dunnhumby in 2011. Post BzzAgent acquisition, Dave acted as Global Head of Investments for dunnhumby and founded dunnhumby Ventures. Dave is also an independent angel and venture partner at Boston Seed Capital. Dave’s investments have included DraftKings, Promoboxx, FitnessKeeper, and Help Scout. Dave was named one of the 30 most disruptive people in Boston tech by Boston Magazine in 2016, was a finalist for the E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year, and was recognized as a future legend by the Ad Club. He cofounded the Word of Mouth Marketing Association and authored two books on the subject including Grapevine and the Word of Mouth Manual Volume II. A long time Techstars mentor, Dave also co-founded Intelligent.ly, a classroom space that helps star employees become managers with his wife, Sarah Hodges, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Boch Center for the Performing Arts. Enjoy!

In this interview Keith Neumeyer, President and CEO of First Majestic Silver Corporation, shares his perspective on last week’s silver flash crash. On July 6, 2017 at 7:06pm EST, September silver futures contract prices fell 10.7% from $16.06 US to $14.34 US. This drop occurred all within a one minute interval. In the subsequent two to three minute period the silver price rebounded about 11% to $15.90 US. In that four minute time period 40 million notional ounces of silver were traded, which is the equivalent of 4.4% of the annual mine supply. Why did this occur? Who or what caused it? Can such an occurrence be prevented in the future? Keith answers these questions and more. Keith Neumeyer has worked in the investment community since 1984.
