Timestamps: [02:20] Jonathan: Talk us through your career and tell us how you ended up at Taronga Ventures? My career started in China, I did my post-grad at a Chinese University and I started doing Urban Planning and from there I stumbled into real estate working for a Singaporean firm in China (one the first VC funds in that markert).  After working in VC, I started at Savills and I have now been in real estate for the last 25 years.  I then worked for Abu Dhabi Investment Authority before moving on to ING Real Estate Finance and most recently Mirvac. [04:30] Joanna: Can you tell us about your 15 years in real estate?  I started at Harvard studying neuroscience. Investment banks, consulting companies and banks love Ivy league kids with science degrees so I went to work at KeyBank Real Estate Capital where we did the structural and financial side of real estate.   I decided I wanted to be an entrepreneur and started a small fund where we bought multifamily assets, refurbished them and started a property management company to do that.  I arrived in Australia at 30, with a failed business and a banking career so I started working on strategy at DEXUS Property Group.  I was more interested in the cutting edge and at Lendlease I was doing transformation and innovation, moving further up the R and D curve. [07:20] Joanna: What are investors honing in on when it comes to innovation?  We have a broad innovation strategy. Advanced analytics and data underpins all of it.  One of the ways of innovating is to take on startups and scaleups and integrate new technologies.  Data and analytics sit under everything that we do.  [09:20] Jonathan: You are currently running an ESG impact program, can you talk us through the program and the mission of it?  We needed to have both the fund and a growth program.  The ESG program is for select high calibre quality companies We needed to move up to the scalable businesses who already had customers and they had some level of traction because the real estate world actually couldn't deal with startups.  It is an ecosystem builder.  [13:00] Joanna: With ESG, it is difficult to get good data from it as well as finding technology to support it. What is your take on this?  Historically in real estate, the industry has been extremely opaque. There's been huge information asymmetry and that's resulted in a massive lack of transparency.  The information asymmetries are breaking down and what's happening is we're starting to be able to abstract data from other industries and from other data sets in order to back solve and fill in data that the real estate industry either doesn't have or is not sharing.  The pressure from the investors and the capital regarding ESG is forcing a level of transparency and scrutiny that is going to become akin to financial reporting.   [15:35] On the topic of investment going into the real estate space and ESG, are there any technologies which you guys can share?  For the last 12 months, every investor and every discussion has been about ESG.   In the building management, energy efficiency space, there are a lot of Companies that are targeting that as an area, but we are looking for a more complete solution.  It often isn't a cost, it's actually a benefit and an upside for the corporates that start using this technique [18:30] Joanna: Are there any major trends that you have seen in the real estate space?  The move from the point solutions to something that is more of a holistic ecosystem as well as the blending of the technologies together. Some technologies simplify a part of something but causes so much extra exhaustion. [21:25] How do we attract and retain more people into the real estate and data world?  The first thing is to know that it is possible.  In terms of diversity, I think it is about honouring diversity of thought and innovation.  [24:40] Jonathan: What are your thoughts on this, knowing that you are in the hiring process?  What we've tried to do from within our advisory board and from our hiring policy, is to have the most diverse approach hiring that we can have.  When we've looked through the businesses that we are investing in, we often see that it is male founded.   We're doing a lot of work to try to positively fund female founded enterprises.   [29:35] Have you seen any change happening when it comes down to education and exploring technology as a career path? Jonathan: I moved from Australia from Sweden, and in Sweden there is just a different approach. We have systematic issues in Australia when it comes to childcare.  Joanna: I think there is a lack of how to even do this and things like how to raise capital. [32:30] Jonathan: What is next for Taronga?  In the next three months we will be churning through hundreds of deals to work out the partners for the ESG program. [33:25] Joanna: What is exciting that is coming up?  The data, analytics and advanced analytics of ESG and the ecosystem around that.  Giving the power back to the people  where you no longer have to big IT for innovation.  [35:50] The ‘LMRE' part, Louisa asks the guests to talk about;  L – Touch on the main lessons you have learnt throughout your career. Jonathan: Decision-making in the corporate real estate world takes longer and you need to build your business to be able to withstand that challenge. Joanna: Be really resourceful and find a way. M - Please give a mention to anyone / product / service. Jonathan: SPACECUBE Joanna: William Cosby - Ex Omina   R – What has been the most rewarding aspect of working in PropTech? Jonathan: The people Joanna: Partnering E - What are you excited about in the future of PropTech? Joanna: Distilling down to the fundamental set of data points. Domestic benchmark indices rose on Monday, tracking gains in ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries, Axis Bank and SBI, amid positive trends in global markets and hopes that surging coronavirus cases could peak soon and mitigate the pandemic's economic impact. Total Covid-19 cases in India surged over 3,50,000 on Sunday, a record jump in infections. However, analysts believe the current virus wave will not have an impact on the stock market similar to that of the first, lending some confidence to investors. Besides, the pick-up in pace of vaccination also aided the sentiment. Amid this backdrop, BSE barometer Sensex settled the day at 48,387, up 508 points. The index had gained as much as 790 points in the intra-day today. Meanwhile, NSE's Nifty50 index added 144 points to close at 14,485.  Axis Bank emerged the best Sensex performer, up 4.40 per cent, ahead of its March quarter results on Tuesday wherein the analysts expect the private sector lender to move back in the black after reporting a net loss in the same quarter last year. It was followed by ICICI Bank, Ultratech Cement, SBI and HUL. On the flip side, HCL Tech, HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma and Maruti Suzuki were the top losers, down up to 3%. Sectorally, barring the Nifty Pharma which lost 0.87%, all indices closed with gains. Nifty Realty was the top performer, up 3.40% followed by Nifty Metals and Nifty Bank which gained nearly 2% each. Broader market indices gained in tandem with the benchmark. Nifty Midcap100 index added 0.78% and Nifty Smallcap index 1.13%. On the stock-specific front, shares of Vedanta jumped 3.84% on the BSE amid a report by PTI that Tamil Nadu chief minister K Palaniswami has allowed the company to operate its Tuticorin plant to produce oxygen amid sharp surge in Covid-19 cases in the country. That apart, Mphasis stock climbed 1.62% after private equity player Blackstone made an open offer to acquire an additional 26% stake in the firm. Funds managed by Blackstone have teamed up with long-term investors including Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and UC Investments to take a majority stake in Mphasis. Natco Pharma's scrip, meanwhile, gained 4.23% after the firm sought Central Drugs Standard Control Organization's approval of Phase-III clinical trial of Molnupiravir Capsules for the treatment of Covid-19 patients. Lastly, shares of ICICI Bank jumped 3.63% after Street hailed the March quarter results of the private lender as negligible debt restructuring, healthy operational performance, and stable growth outlook kept investor confidence intact. Although shares of HCL Tech dipped 2.87% as the Noida-based IT company missed estimates on all fronts. Despite that, brokerages remained bullish on the stock given inexpensive valuations and the possibility of strong revenue growth in FY22. On the earnings front, Tech Mahindra today reported a 34.51 per cent YoY rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 1,081.4 crore for the March quarter of FY21 as against Rs 803.9 crore posted in the corresponding quarter last year. The March quarter revenue stood at Rs 9,729.9 crore, up 2.5 per cent YoY. Tech Mahindra missed brokerages' profit expectations, although it met projections on the revenue front. Ahead of the results, the company's stock closed 1.3% higher at Rs 963 on the BSE Lastly, an update on the global market front. World markets began the week in a relatively upbeat mood. The broader Euro STOXX 600 gained 0.23% while Germany's DAX rose 0.22%. In Asia, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan reached its highest since March 18, despite a late sell-off in Chinese shares. Wall Street futures, however, pointed to a slightly weaker open. Meanwhile, in the oil markets, prices fell almost $1 on fears that surging Covid-19 cases in India will dent fuel demand in the world's third-biggest oil importer. Brent crude was last seen 89 cents lower at $65.22 a barrel.

Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today’s podcast news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com OTIS DOUBLE-DECK ELEVATORS FOR ALTO TOWER IN PARIS Otis' first SkyRise® double-deck elevators in France are part of a vertical-transportation (VT) system serving the new 150-m-tall Alto Tower, a 38-story office tower developed by Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and La Défense Public Development Agency in Paris' La Défense business district. Designed by IF Architects, the structure has a small footprint at ground level that expands outward as it climbs. This, according to Otis France High-Rise Operation Manager Fabienne Blot, "presented a unique opportunity to showcase our SkyRise double-deck technology, effectively meeting the building's needs while maximizing leasable space." Otis observes its double-deck technology reduces elevator core space by up to 40%. Upon entering the building, passengers log their destinations using CompassPlus, which assigns them to the proper cabs. To access an upper-deck elevator cab, passengers ride one of two Otis escalators. In total, Alto Tower's VT system has 10 SkyRise elevators, including eight double-deck and two heavy-duty units; two Gen2® elevators; and two escalators. Equipped with Otis' EMS PanoramaTM elevator-management system, the SkyRise elevators "are in a unique configuration with the double decks grouped in a single bank, providing point-to-point travel and eliminating the need for a transfer floor," Otis observes. The OEM will also maintain the tower’s VT equipment. Consequently, the Dow fell 1.34 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 1.4 per cent,  and the Nasdaq dropped 1.57 per cent. Asian stocks, meanwhile, were mixed to positive on Wednesday after recovery in Dow futures. The Indian markets look set for a flat to positive start on Thursday. At 7:30 AM, the SGX Nifty was trading at around 11,320 levels. However, investors can expect some sharp moves later in the day as the Supreme Court is set to resume hearing on loan moratorium. In the previous hearing, SC had ruled in favour of borrowers by asking lenders not to declare accounts as NPA until further order. Moreover, media reports indicate that after silver lake, marquee investors including KKR, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund could be in line to pick stakes in RIL's retail-arm Reliance Retail Limited. This could spur some positive momentum in the stock. Apart from these, market participants will also take cues from global markets, and track corporate results for stock-specific moves. A total of 74 companies including Hindustan Aeronautics, and J&K Bank are scheduled to announce their June quarter results today. Overnight, Wall Street reversed course after three-day losing streak and ended higher after investors ploughed into technology stocks. In a regulatory filing, the company said the floor price for the QIP has been set at Rs 206.70 per equity share. The Indian markets look set to begin this week on a strong note. The SGX Nifty is indicating a gap-up open today with the Nifty likely to open at around 10,260 levels on the back of firm global cues. Throughout the week also, global trends will remain a major sentiment driver for the indices. Especially, the US Fed interest rate decision on Wednesday will be a key event for investors.   According to analysts, the domestic markets have largely been mirroring their global counterparts, and any negative development on the global front might derail the momentum. In that regard, investors will keep a keen eye on the US-China tensions. Today, Asian shares advanced in early deals. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.3 per cent, with Japan's Nikkei rising 0.74 per cent. On the other hand, South Korea’s Kospi slipped 0.3 per cent. In commodities, oil prices rose to their highest in three months after OPEC and its allies including Russia agreed to extend record oil production cuts until the end of July. Brent crude climbed to as high as $43.41 a barrel and was last trading at $42.95, up 1.54 per cent. Apart from this, much of India will today have hotels, restaurants, malls, and places of worship reopening after 75 days of lockdown, but amid observing social-distancing norms. However, malls will remain shut until June 30 in certain states and union territories. And even though India looks to gradually open its economy, there's no respite on the Covid-19 front as India registered its highest single-day spike of cases on Sunday, with 10,864 new infections taking the country's tally to 2.57 lakh. The death toll rose to 7,207, according to Worldometer. As such, developments related to the spread of Covid-19 infections will remain a key concern for investors. In terms of corporate results, around 110 companies like PVR, Titan, Hero MotoCorp, Hindalco Industries and M&M will report their quarterly earnings this week, which may trigger stock-specific action. On the macro front, industrial production data for April and CPI inflation for May is due on Friday. The effect of the nationwide lockdown in April is likely to show in the industrial production data this time. Besides, the 40th meeting of the GST Council will be held on June 12 in which the impact of the pandemic on revenues of the Centre and states and ways to bridge the revenue gap is likely to be discussed. Reliance Industries will once again be in focus today after the conglomerate announced 1.16 per cent stake sale in Jio Platforms to Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. This is the eighth investment in Jio Platforms in seven weeks. So far, RIL has raised Rs 97,885.65 crore through 21.06 per cent stake sale to seven marquee investors. Now, let's look at some other main news of the day. The actual gross direct tax collection during 2019-20 fiscal dipped by 4.92 per cent to Rs 12.33 trillion on account on reduction in corporate tax rate, increased standard deduction and personal I-T exemption limit. And, in the end, sources tell Business Standard that the Centre is likely to designate the banking and financial sector strategic under the new privatisation policy. According to the source, discussions had also been held on privatising some state-owned banks that are not on the consolidation list so far. Read by: Kanishka Gupta

Columbia Energy Exchange
How Energy Markets are Influencing Geopolitics and the Global Economy

Columbia Energy Exchange

Global energy markets are in flux, from the rapid growth in renewable energy production and falling technology costs to talk of peak demand and calls for urgent action on climate change. At the same time, greenhouse gas emissions went up last year at the fastest rate they have since 2011, and we saw growth in coal, oil and gas production and consumption. When it comes to energy and climate issues, there’s tension between the rhetoric, our ambition, and the reality of the facts on the ground. In this edition of Columbia Energy Exchange, host Jason Bordoff is joined by Dr. Christof Rühl, an internationally renowned economist specializing in macroeconomics and energy economics. Christof served as Chief Economist at BP for nearly a decade, and most recently, was the Head of Research at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.  Jason and Christof discuss how energy markets are impacting geopolitical risk and the global economy -- from sanctions to trade wars and the escalating tensions in the Straits of Hormuz. They discuss the shale revolution, and its global implications as the U.S. becomes a major exporter of both natural gas and crude oil. They also discuss plastics, electric vehicles and new technologies from advanced nuclear to battery storage and hydrogen, and the role they might play in the energy transition.

Michael Covel opens up about his more interesting experiences in 2013, first talking about his experiences presenting to the sovereign wealth funds for Singapore and Malaysia. Covel moves into talking about the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (another sovereign wealth fund), and whether they are understood as a trend following trader or not. Covel talks about the “silent magic hand”, and its connection to the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and whether this means they are now executing trend following in-house. Covel talks about how this means potentially less and less public information about trend following going forward. Covel moves into media manipulation and distraction and how it surrounds us 24/7. He also discusses an upcoming trend following conference in Asia in late 2014. Time to start kicking ass. No sitting still. Get on a plane now! Want a free trend following DVD?
