Growing up in the rural farm country of New England, you're bound to see scores of Jeeps, trucks, and more than a few tractors. Many people have them for daily transportation and working on and around their properties, and the Ladden family was no exception. Fascinated from a very early age while watching his dad with his Jeeps, it's a piece of family lore that Michael's first word was not “mom” or “dad” but “Jeep.” A pivotal moment in Michael's life came when he left his first significant job after college to explore Africa. This journey ignited a passion for Land Rovers, adventure travel, and a desire to live life on his own terms. Despite a successful career in real estate and hospitality, his adventurous spirit eventually led him to sell everything and embark on a 220,000-mile expedition across all seven continents. When the pandemic disrupted his global journey, Michael didn't let it deter him. Instead, he adapted his plans and turned his travels towards North and Central America. He has spent significant time exploring Baja California Sur, Mexico, riding the peninsula on a KTM adventure motorcycle and most of the Baja Divide by bicycle. In addition to his ground adventures, Michael is a private pilot and just released a book about his African adventures. He has visited 122 countries and proudly states he's been to nine out of ten of the worst ones! Get your Baja insurance here: https://www.bajabound.com/quote/?r=fl... Today, I'm excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at the planning and preparation for my upcoming adventure on the 3,000km Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand. I recorded this episode, hours before I headed down to London to catch my flight to first Korea and then on to Aukland, New Zealand.  In this podcast, I'll take you through the meticulous planning and preparation that goes into making these epic adventures come to life. From the nitty-gritty details on my to-do list to managing setbacks and equipment challenges. I share the story behind my sponsorship with ZOLEO and the invaluable benefits I've gained from their products. I'll also break down my approach to planning big adventures. Starting by dividing it down into the mental, physical, logistical, and practical aspects, offering insights that hopefully will add value as you plan your adventures. Throughout this episode, I'll candidly share the intricacies and hurdles I've encountered and why I take full responsibly for all my decision, even when those decision put me under huge amounts of pressure/stress to deliver.  So, if you're curious about what goes into planning an adventure as massive as the Te Araroa Trail while running a business and keeping that business going while travelling. Alenka Vrecek was born at the foot of the Alps in Slovenia, a part of former communist Yugoslavia.  She spent her earliest years idolizing the likes of Reinhold Messner and other great alpine climbers. Born with a spirit for adventure, she came to America at 20 years old with a backpack, a pair of skis, and a pocket full of dreams. Her run as one of the top ski instructors in Squaw Valley ended with an accident that left her with a shattered knee and torn ligaments. During her recovery from surgery, she got a cancer diagnosis that would change the course of her life. Barely through her chemo and radiation treatment, Alenka decided that the way to get clarity was to jump on her bicycle and ride solo from her home in Lake Taho to her home in Baja, Mexico via one of the most grueling trails on the planet, the Baja Divide. This is a story about one woman's quest to summit her own personal Everest. I love this episode so much.  I rode the Baja Divide shortly after my conversation with Alenka and I have no idea how she did it. Actually, I do. She's Alenka. Listen to the end. It's an amazing conversation with an inspirational woman. Support the show

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you were face to face with a mountain lion in the middle of the night during an ultra-endurance bike race where you were poised to beat the entire field (including the men)? In this interview, professional ultra-endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox discusses this and sooo much more. Lael might be the toughest woman I've interviewed yet — and that's saying a lot. The Alaska (and Tucson) based athlete's many accolades include setting a women's record in the 2015 Tour Divide, setting the fastest women's time on the Baja Divide route in 2015, breaking the men's record on that same course in 2017, winning the 4400 mile TransAm bike race, which has you cycling across the United States, beating everyone including the men, and becoming the 2nd woman to every complete Switzerland's Navad 1000 bikepacking race- where she took second place. Lael doesn't just compete in bikepacking events - she also helps other people enjoy them. In addition to organizing women's bikepacking challenges, she is the founder of Anchorage GRIT, a middle school bicycle mentorship program for 7th grade girls in Anchorage, AK, and she also founded Lael Rides Alaska Scholarship. Plus, she's a total ray of sunshine. Today's podcast guest is life-long cyclist Herb Bool. In 2018, at 55 years old, Bool rode the 1,700 mile Baja Divide in 35 days. Conceived by ultra-endurance bicycle racer Lael Wilcox and Nicholas Carman, the Baja Divide is: “A rugged 1,700-mile off-pavement bikepacking route down the Baja California peninsula, from San Diego to San José del Cabo. This route connects the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, historic Spanish mission sites rich with shade and water, remote ranchos and fishing villages, bustling highway towns, and every major mountain range in Baja California on miles and miles of beautiful backcountry desert tracks.” Bool met up with a group of a dozen riders massed to make the trek on New Year's Eve on the San Diego waterfront. They rode East and spent the first night together camped at a ranch just North of the Border as a group. They crossed into Tecate the next day and stuck together until they cleared the border town. As the group sorted themselves out, Bool settled in with a fast trio to ride the rest of the route. “We were on our bikes when the sun came up every day, and we would ride pretty much until the sun was starting to sink. It was an all-day ride every day.” The group averaged 55 miles a day for just over a month. Enjoy this warm recollection of 35 days in the saddle, pumping out 1700 miles on the Baja Divide -with the affable Herb Bool. On this episode I share my interview with Sarah Williams, host of the Tough Girl Podcast & Founder of Tough Girl Challenges and we explore how Sarah came to create something that is 'tough and feminine'. Recognised by the Guardian in 2018 as one of the top 10 most inspiring contemporary female adventurers, Sarah epitomises everything that Tough Girl is all about. On work-life balance Sarah says; Work-life balance is this wonderful dream and these fabulous words which get banded about and is something that I massively struggle with as I don't really have it. Sometimes I like to think I have it but generally I go from one extreme to the other. Background Sarah has an on-line brand called Tough Girl Challenges which is all about motivating and inspiring women and girls. Encouraging them to dream big, to live their life to the fullest as well as to travel, to explore, to get fit and to go on adventures. She does this through a number of ways including; having a blog, a podcast, writing books and part of her mission is to increase the number of female role models in the media. Since setting up Tough Challenges in 2014, Sarah has regularly stepped outside of her own comfort zone. She has taken on a number of her own challenges including; running the Marathon des Sables, hiking the Appalachian Trail in addition to cycling the Pacific Coast Highway and the Baja Divide. Purpose The more women that go out there and complete challenges; this will have a knock on effect on other areas in society. The ripple effect will be huge and we will start to see a better balance in everything from politics to films, sport and coverage. Above all; it's important for women to see it to believe it. Sarah loves interviewing other women and sharing their stories for the Tough Girl Podcast. These women are completing inspirational challenges and therefore they are going to increase the number of female role models in the media. Tough and feminine is a thread that runs through our discussion which Sarah is hugely passionate about. Challenging some of societies models, norms and expectations that we've previously been encouraged to believe. Final take-away Write it down. Everything that you want to achieve in your life; take 1o minutes to write down those things. be proactive and start planning your life. I've been a fan of her for a long time and listening to her masterfully tell stories around a campfire goes down as a highlight of my life. She is as engaging and funny in person as you may imagine. The day before we recorded this episode she made a heartfelt post on instagram about some of her personal struggles with happiness and mental health. On this episode we unpack some of what precipitated that post and really shed light on the dichotomy between social media and what's going on in a person's real life. We also discuss the value bike travel has had on personal journey with mental health. These are important topics and I appreciate Peppers willingness to openly discuss some hard topics. We also discuss her recent sponsorship with Salsa Cycles, her nomadic lifestyle and recent move to alaska, as well as her most recent solo trip on the Baja Divide. Enjoy!

In this episode we meet Sarah Williams. I said when I started the podcast I wanted to feature a whole variety of different life challenges, and unconventional career change was up there. Sarah is well known in the world of female adventuring – you may have heard her Tough Girl Podcast and if you haven’t go give it a listen. A blogger, vlogger, podcaster and motivational speaker who has chalked up a lengthy list of long-distance endurance adventures, from hiking the Appalachian trail in 100 days to finishing the Marathon des Sables and most recently cycling the Pacific Coast Highway and Baja Divide solo. Sarah talks to me about the process of realising her well-paid, secure career in London was not making her happy and how she finally transitioned to a more unconventional life. It was not clean cut and many years later she still struggles to finance a fully independent life. Yet she is making it work and was amazingly open with what this looks like today. We talk about the many sacrifices she has chosen to make; what remain the hardest struggles; how she finances her work and life; and what happened in her most recent adventure along the Pacific Coast and Baja Divide. Sarah is a positive force with bucketloads of passion for shining more light on women and empowering us to seize the day and take on that challenge we’ve been thinking about.
