D., Lange, F., Bates, M., Bou Dib, P., Shcherbata, H., Meinecke, M., Riedel, D., Dennerlein, S., Rehling, P., Jakobs, S. Abstract: Mitochondria are essential eukaryotic double-membrane organelles. The convoluted mitochondrial inner membrane forms highly organized invaginations, termed cristae, which are crucial for energy metabolism. Cristae formation requires MICOS, a conserved hetero-oligomeric inner membrane complex. The MICOS core subunit MIC10 is a small transmembrane protein that oligomerizes through highly conserved glycine-rich motifs to control cristae formation. Sequence alignments show that D. melanogaster exhibits three MIC10-like proteins with different tissue-specific expression patterns. Here, we show that the ubiquitously expressed Dmel_CG41128/MINOS1b/DmMIC10b is the major MIC10 orthologue in flies. Loss of DmMIC10b disturbs cristae architecture of mitochondria and reduces the life-span and fertility of flies. Moreover, using fluorescence nanoscopy and electron tomography, we demonstrate that despite its high similarity to the MIC10 proteins from yeast and humans, DmMIC10b exhibits the unique ability to polymerize into elongated filaments upon overexpression. DmMIC10b filaments form bundles which accumulate in the intermembrane space and alter the shape of mitochondrial cristae membranes. We show that the formation of the filaments relies on conserved glycine and cysteine residues and is suppressed by co-expression of other MICOS proteins. Thereby, our findings provide new insights into the regulation of MICOS in flies. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC

Blanche Petit was a child prodigy on the piano whose European career commenced at the age of nine in 1851. After she performed in New York the following year, her family settled in Charleston, where her influential father died suddenly in 1856. Thirteen-year-old Blanche then launched an illustrious career as a professional musician, teacher, and conductor in the Palmetto City that continued until her death in 1919.
Those of us in the New York City area saw our classmate, Oxiris Barbot, as a leader at the beginning of COVID. A doctor and life-long advocate for health care equity, Oxiris helped all of us through those first difficult first months. In this episode, she shares her perspective -- and challenges us all to make the world a better place. Here is a bit more about Oxiris from ChangeLab Solutions, where she is a board member: With more than 25 years' experience in public health and health care delivery, Dr. Oxiris Barbot has dedicated her career to achieving health equity. When she was commissioner of health for New York City, she led the nation's largest municipal health department in centering an equity agenda on communities, bridging public health and health care delivery, and leveraging data for action and policy. She successfully guided the city's responses to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and to New York City's largest measles outbreak in 30 years. As an innovative public health leader, Dr. Barbot has championed addressing health inequities in major cities along the East Coast. In 2010, Dr. Barbot was appointed commissioner of health for Baltimore City. During her tenure in Baltimore, she led the development of Healthy Baltimore 2015, a robust health agenda dedicated to ensuring that all Baltimore residents realize their full health potential. Under her leadership, the City of Baltimore achieved a record reduction in the rate of infant death, among many achievements in health. From 2003 to 2010, Dr. Barbot served as medical director of New York City's public schools. In this capacity, she spearheaded development and implementation of an electronic health record system that improved delivery of health services for more than 1 million children. Prior to her work in New York City, Dr. Barbot served as chief of pediatrics and community medicine at Unity Health Care, Inc., a federally qualified health center in Washington, DC. Dr. Barbot holds a bachelor's degree from Yale University and a medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She completed her pediatric residency at George Washington University's Children's National Medical Center.

It's been more than a year and a half since the coronavirus pandemic spread across the globe, and while some aspects of the crisis have been brought under control, others remain extremely difficult to manage. Navigating the pandemic, particularly at its outset, required resourceful experts who could make decisions of enormous consequence with limited data or precedent. In this episode, we speak to Dr. Oxiris Barbot, who served as Health Commissioner for New York City from 2018 to 2020, about the lessons she learned during those harrowing first months of the pandemic, and the life-saving decisions she was forced to make. Dr. Barbot also walks us through her strategies for countering our ongoing challenges with COVID-19, such as the Delta variant, the logistics of vaccinating young children and how to ensure we consider racial equity in our approach to fighting the pandemic.

Abstract: Human vision has striking radial asymmetries, with performance on many tasks varying sharply as a function of stimulus polar angle. Performance is better on the horizontal than vertical meridian, and on the lower than upper vertical meridian. Here we show that the surface area in human primary visual cortex, measured in 181 subjects, is asymmetrically distributed with a similar pattern, thus indicating a tight link between cortical topography and behavior. Last month, Vice President Joe Biden unveiled his plan for climate change—a sweeping $2 trillion dollar platform that aims to tighten standards for clean energy, decarbonize the electrical grid by 2035, and reach carbon neutrality for the whole country by 2050. Biden’s plan, like the Green New Deal, purports to create millions of jobs at a time when people are reeling financially from the pandemic—proposing employment opportunities including retrofitting buildings, converting electrical grids and vehicles, and otherwise transforming the country into an energy efficient, emissions-free economy. But are the foundations of this plan on solid scientific ground? Yes, say Ira’s guests, political scientist Leah Stokes and energy systems engineer Sally Benson. Stokes and Benson run through Biden’s proposals, explaining what’s ambitious, what’s pragmatic, and what people might show up to vote for. Deep in the largest rainforest of Latin America is the Peruvian Boiling River, a name earned from water that can reach 100°C—or about 212°F. While the river is hot enough to cook any animal unfortunate enough to wind up in it, its microbes don’t mind. They can handle the heat—and their odd survival mechanisms might have medicinal value. Joining Ira to talk about these tiny heat-seekers and the Peruvian Boiling River is Rosa Vásquez Espinoza, a Ph.D. candidate in chemical biology at the University of Michigan. See photos and video of Rosa Vásquez Espinoza’s expedition to the Boiling River and learn more about her research on extreme microbes in a feature article on SciFri. It’s been a busy week for science news. Cities are still grappling with COVID-19, and in New York City, previously the country’s largest coronavirus hotspot, health commissioner Oxiris Barbot has resigned. She cited Mayor Bill de Blasio’s handling of the pandemic as her reason for doing so, issuing a scathing statement on her way out the door. Barbot is just one of the many health officials around the country who have butted heads with the politicians that oversee them during the pandemic. And across the world, devastating explosions in Beirut, Lebanon have injured thousands and killed several dozen. As officials piece together why this happened, they’re pointing to a warehouse of ammonium nitrate as the source of the blasts. Joining Ira to talk about these stories, and other science news of the week, is Sophie Bushwick, technology editor at Scientific American in New York, New York.

Happy Friday! The Coronavirus continues to claim more victims. New York’s Governor Cuomo frequently criticizes President Trump for not giving New York the medical equipment it needs to combat this deadly virus. However, every year, since the terror attacks of 9/11 the federal government has provided funding to each state to address the threat of terrorism. On September 17, 2018 Cuomo issued a press release: Governor Cuomo Announces Nearly $224 Million in Federal Funding for Preparedness and Counterterrorism EffortsThe question never asked is where has all of that money been spent? Cuomo and the Radical Left attack President Trump for not doing enough quickly to protect America. However, last month Cuomo and other officials including NYC’s Health Commissioner, Dr. Barbot, urged New Yorkers to ignore the Coronavirus and celebrate Chinese New Year!

In this in service Dr. Stephen Price and I discuss the relationship between mental illness and violence and delve into our experiences with this population. According to the Department of Justice violent crime has been decreasing since the early 1990s. Although there is a statistical relationship between mental illness and violence, only 4% of all violent crimes are committed by persons with mental illness. Conversely, persons with mental illness are at high risk for violent victimization. Despite this violent crimes involving persons with mental illness are over-reported. Research indicates that mental illness only needs to be mentioned in news stories for people to infer that there is a causal relationship between the two.
Day 62. I spent most of the day on other projects, so wanted to do a simple song today. The video is my other project I worked on! I ran all the tubing for the pumps for BarBot today, and got to try out pouring a drink!
Taking a week off from work can seem tough to many of us. Two weeks? Doubtful. A month? Are you crazy! And if you run a digital agency, you probably feel like you struggle to take the afternoon off. And yet, increasingly, people in the Bureau community are embracing the concept of sabbaticals. Today Bill Barbot from Threespot shares with us his experience of unplugging for six weeks. Removing his work email, deleting Slack and telling everyone in the company that only one person would be able to send up a flare in case of emergency. In doing so he gave himself space to see what happens when you turn everything off. Listen in to see how things went.
