John Vervaeke and Evan Thompson continue the exploration of life, cognition, and consciousness, drawing from interdisciplinary collaboration and philosophical discourse. The discussion challenges reductionist perspectives in biology, examines organisms as autonomous agents, and questions the adequacy of current models to explain life's complexities. Consciousness is explored through presence and embodiment, while also debating the roles of large language models like ChatGPT in understanding cognitive processes. By integrating philosophical and phenomenological perspectives, the episode addresses the interconnectedness of consciousness, cognition, and life, transcending traditional mind-matter dichotomies and emphasizing the significance of embodiment in cognitive functions.  Evan Thompson is a philosopher and author, specializing in the integration of cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and Asian philosophical traditions. In this episode IFS trained Family Therapist Anna Vincentz focus on becoming a Self-led parent. What it is and how to be Self-led. Being Self-led is a term from Internal Family Systems (IFS) and it is about being you in the present; being conscious on the inside. Being Self-led and parts-informed is about becoming aware of and listening to our parts (reactions, feelings, symptoms, thoughts...), becoming aware of what is going on inside of us as a reaction to our relationships and notice when it is coming from the past and when it is actually congruent to (and helpful) in and with the present. When and what is helpful in relationship to our children. Being and becoming a Self-led parent is about being conscious on the inside (being with instead of being in our parts and their reactions and feelings), which facilitates us being conscious with our children on the outside. In the fifth episode of the Philosophy of Meditation series, hosts John Vervaeke and Rick Repetti engage with Evan Thompson, a renowned cognitive scientist and philosopher, to explore the symbiosis of meditation, cognitive science, and philosophy. The episode highlights how Evan's early meditation practice shaped his philosophical outlook, emphasizing the experiential depth revealed by meditative states about consciousness. Discussions cover the transformative social aspects of meditation and philosophical views on death, underscoring Evan's perspective that meditation enriches, but should not solely define, philosophy. This insightful conversation traverses the transformative potential of meditation beyond calming the mind, delving into its role in personal development and intellectual growth. By merging philosophical rigor with meditation's lived experience, this conversation offers a nuanced understanding of meditation's role in enhancing human cognition and self-awareness, presenting a compelling case for its profound impact on philosophical thought.   Evan Thompson is a renowned philosopher and cognitive scientist, recognized for his significant contributions to the field of 4E cognitive science, which emphasizes embodied, embedded, enactive, and extended aspects of cognition. His work intricately bridges Western philosophy with Eastern contemplative practices, particularly Buddhism, exploring the intersections of consciousness, meditation, and the human experience. Thompson's influential writings include discussions on the philosophy of mind, meditation, and the nature of self, making him a respected figure in both academic and contemplative circles.   Glossary of Terms   4E Cognitive Science: A framework in cognitive science emphasizing four key factors: embodied, embedded, enacted, and extended cognition. In this episode, I dive into a deep and nourishing conversation with Sarah Marshank author of Being Selfish and Selfistry: A Guide to Embodying Timeless Spiritual Wisdom. We talk about her own journey from escort to monk to spiritual guide, and what she discovered about what it takes to become an authentic, grounded, creative and integrated being in these challenging times. Join us as she reveals her path tol deep spirituality without the dogma, and discover how to "listen for the genius in the room” as we practice how to become wisely selfish so that we can cultivate the deep wisdom that always sits waiting for us in the depths of the darkness. "Studies estimate nearly 25% of the world's population does not ascribe to any religion and roughly 25% of people in the US consider themselves “spiritual but not religious.” Many of these people are searching for a life of integrity amid an increasingly polarized global landscape filled with religious extremism, political turmoil, and environmental uncertainty. Disillusioned but seeking to contribute to the well-being of the planet, many are finding guidance in emergent integrative systems that develop all aspects of the modern human: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and social. “Selfistry” is one of those systems that offers a unique and simple approach. “Selfistry” offers a fresh take on embodying authentic spiritual principles. It is an innovative and integrative framework for self-reflection-an opportunity for the genuinely curious to reconsider their relationship with themselves and the cosmos.” Sarahs Marshank Bio Sarah Marshank is the founder of Selfistry, an integrative system for mastering the art of being human. She is the author of the award winning memoir Being Self-ish: My Journey from Escort to Monk to Grandmother, where she tells the story of her decade in spiritual retreat. She is also the author of Selfistry: A Guide to Embodying Timeless Spiritual Wisdom. Her teachings weave together spirituality, psychology, and neuroscience in an innovative way — integrating Eastern and Western philosophies with meditative and somatic practices. Sarah Marshank has lived many lives: college student, lover, Orthodox Jew, escort, celibate monk, truth-seeker, recluse. As we all do in some fashion, Sarah embarked on a hero's journey to answer her deepest call: to be a teacher. Through these diverse and rich experiences, Sarah now shares what she's found to be the most helpful principles and practices for being a "self" in the world. What exactly does this look like? This episode explores the "self" in all its complexity and beauty. Sarah Marshank is the founder of Selfistry, a unique learning system for mastering the art of being human. She's the author of Being Self-ish: My Journey from Escort to Monk to Grandmother and Selfistry: A Guide to Embodying Timeless Spiritual Wisdom. Based in California, Sarah teaches and speaks internationally, offers online programs, consults with corporate clients, and works one-on one with individuals. Her training as an educator makes her an effective and impactful facilitator, but Sarah's embodied presence is what touches people the most — the fruit of spending ten years in personal retreat. Her superpower is how she weaves Eastern philosophy and Western psychology into a process that yields profound authenticity. Sarah loves to guide people towards this deep and sustainable encounter with themselves. In this episode, Sarah and I dive into: -Sarah's background: from her childhood in Detroit, to being an educator and orthodox Jew, to going on retreat for 10 years, to finally arriving at the work she does now with Selfistry. -The relationship between "Source," "Self," and "Witness" as Sarah understands it. -Working with the "messy" parts of ourselves: our flaws, habits, addictions, wounds, and all the things we want to change within ourselves - how we can both work on these things AND hold "loving awareness" (i.e., The Witness) for all of the beautiful messiness in its entirety. -Why attempts to transcend the "self" may not be so helpful. -Why "The Witness" helps us mediate between what the universe wants for us, and what we're actually doing. -How suffering works as a "feedback mechanism" that keeps us on track with what the universe wants (i.e., Source). -Meditation as a "self-improvement" project and how to even hold loving-awareness for this! Mimesis, mimetic desire, and metaphysical desire are the fundamental building blocks of Girard's psychology. They will show us how even the most intimate aspects of our identity can be radically shaped by others and how to distinguish vanity from authenticity. These psychological fundaments are what make humans social animals, why prestige and recognition matter so much to us, and how we are able to form cultures and even language itself. They are responsible for humanity's greatest achievements, but they also render us helplessly fallen. The idea that meditation is a "mind science" is popular, but in this interview Canadian philosopher Evan Thompson argues that this claim does not stand up to either scientific or philosophical scrutiny. As one of the pioneers of the Embodied Cognition movement Thompson reminds us that the Mind is not restricted to the Brain and we must also consider how other recent discoveries in neuroscience fail to support the claim that meditation provides neutral scientific insight into how the Mind really works. I practice strengthening my intuition like strengthening my muscles, do you? When you want to strengthen your intuition there are two things you gotta have on lock: Discernment and Being Self-guided. Without these two critical things, it's easy to let your energy drift and let the wind take you in any direction. This is usually due to how our energy is planted in our life. If we're not cultivating our intuition with a firm foundation it becomes easier to be externally influenced instead of being self-guided and led from within. If we don't have discernment between what we're looking at, we will flutter from this flower to the next, letting our energy drift and drift and drift - until we forgot what we were doing in the first place. and then forget who we are. Because we're letting our frequency become clouded by too many different noises. Discernment and mind discipline is more than just a boundary, it's an act of choosing to spend our energy wisely, entertaining where am i giving my time, focus, and energy to? This month's episode of Brain Science is a free encore playing of my interview with Evan Thompson about his book Mind in Life: Biology, Phenomenology, and the Sciences of Mind. We discuss how the enactive approach to embodied cognition offers potential clues to the mystery of how the brain can generate Consciousness. A free episode transcript is also available. This is the 2nd of two free encore episodes that are being shared to give listeners a taste of the diverse content available to Premium subscribers. Premium subscribers have access to over 100 additional episodes of Brain Science along with episode transcripts. The embodied cognition movement is an approach within cognitive neuroscience that includes philosophers, neuroscientists, psychologists and computer scientists. The key idea is that cognition, which includes thinking and decision-making, is inseparable from embodiment. This is not just because it requires sensory inputs to the brain, but also because moving in the world is a key component. Thus embodied cognition does not see this as a passive input/output process, but as something that requires constant interaction with the world via the body. Magical World of Creative VisualizationAir Date: Wednesday, 26 January 2022 at 5:00 PM ET/2:00 PM PTThis week on Expedition Self we'll take a trip into the ‘Magical World of Creative Visualization'. This magical world is an understated but ‘oh-so-powerful' tool for self development – and it's available to anyone. Some call it guided meditation, others refer to it as creative visualization – but what we know is that when you're wanting to connect more deeply with your inner knowing and manifest the life you want, this is a pathway that's easily accessible and viscerally moving.Years ago, I was inspired by Shakti Gawain who wrote one of the first books on the subject. But since that time, this idea of utilizing the imagination to make contact with the unconscious, the inside Self, and the hidden reservoir of personal revelation, has experienced widespread recognition for its transformational impact. This week on Expedition Self, we'll talk about the benefits of engaging in it as a practice, the many ways you can bring it into your own life, and how to create your own guided meditations. Sam will share many visualization moments from her personal process, adding first hand imagery and metaphor to the conversation. This hour will be filled with enchanted storytelling, practical suggestions, and side trips into the genius of the creative Self. It'll be a fascinating hour filled with new possibility for your BEING Self. Sam invites you to CALL IN and CHAT LIVE about ‘the Magical World of Creative Visualization' to further the conversation. Ask questions. Share experiences. This could be the hour that moves you one step further on your growth and development journey.Go to samparrotto.com to follow along and new show updates each week. You won't want to miss being an ‘ON AIR' participant of Expedition Self. "IFS Guided Meditation – The Mountain of Ideal Self” is a 25 Minute IFS Guided Meditation for Being Self and to imagine a mountain as your ideal life. It is designed with two goals in mind. First goal is to help you separate yourself from all your familiar thoughts and feelings, or whatever else that defines your personality. This allows you to create some space inside and experience presence in your purest sense of self, or simply “Be in Self”. Second goal of this meditation is to invite you to imagine yourself beyond your familiar life, and to realize that your life can be far more ideal and inspiring than what it is now. What stand between you and the mountain of your ideal life are parts of your personality that have strong beliefs or perspectives about you and what you can or cannot do. Experience this meditation with headphones and an open heart. Embody the words that are being said as if they are coming from deep inside your own heart.  Guided meditations like the one in this post help us connect to a source of inner wisdom and higher consciousness, i.e. Self. This podcast is produced by Aion Farvahar, who is a Life and Spirituality Mentor, and a Psychoshamanic and IFS Self-Leadership Practitioner. In this episode, we are opening up a bit more about Postpartum Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and how navigating depression as a Black Woman and surviving suicide led her to the creation of her book and business. Her mission is to normalize the conversation surrounding mental health in BIPOC Communities.  From Tor:  "My purpose is to be the voice echoing to those whose pain is overshadowed by societal "norms." Too often we are told to be silent through our struggles, tough it out through our tears, and just plain "suck it up." However, I can tell you first hand this is not a healthy approach to living a full and happy life. It is okay to get help. It is okay to scream. It is okay to cry. We all have feelings for a reason, and you are reacting to a trigger for that very reason. Acknowledge it and get the help you need. Love and understand yourself enough not to be your own worst enemy. Mental health awareness is a necessity. This is why I advocate for it. You never know who else is suffering from depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts." Using the fun and adventurous world of Expedition Self as an easy-to-navigate framework, each week she will guide you past the common and flashy rhetoric of ‘self-help' and root you fervently in the center of your BEING Self! Your participation is VITAL. You can either call in and chat LIVE or send in your questions prior. You won't want to miss being an on-air participant in the debut of Expedition Self. This week's question is “How does creativity help you to build a more accepting relationship with ALL aspects of you?” So often people will say they're not creative, they can't draw or make anything beautiful. If this is you, don't fret! The kind of creativity we'll be talking about during this inaugural show is the kind that's woven into each and every person's DNA. Meaning, anyone can get access to it! Occupying the space between the left and the right brain, the creativity discussed in this week's show serves as a sort of bridge. When traveled with intention, the result is a more substantive, satisfying relationship with YOUR ‘SELF'. These new pathways can't be found on rigid, well-worn streams of “familiarity” and can't be seen with eyes that believe they know the way. Only through the vehicle of creativity can we see anew. Listeners who thought they couldn't even draw a stick figure before this show will leave feeling inspired to give this ‘creativity' thing a shot in their pursuit of more career satisfaction, a better romantic relationship, or even healing from old emotional wounds. And it will reaffirm for the more creative types, the importance of providing diverse connections for the many, unique parts of the Self to interact and explore the world within. Each week Sam discusses a different and highly accessible slice of building a stronger, deeper relationship with the inner Self so that YOU have the tools to become more and more whole. Another way of seeing this method is the three aspects of our selves into the personality, the awareness of selves, and the mystery or spirituality, When we can see the many selves, witness them from a distance then we can better lean into the source Sarah has discovered through her own personal journeys how to tap into herself and allow her to be the witness to help her and others realize their many selves. How many times have you heard people claim that Buddhism isn’t really a religion, that it’s a philosophy, a way of life, that its spiritual but not religious, or even that it’s a “science of mind”? These familiar tropes are a legacy of Buddhist Modernism, what Evan Thompson aptly has coined “Buddhist exceptionalism.” In this episode we explore these common claims, especially how they have been taken up by Secular Buddhists, mindfulness teachers and even scientists.  We explore in this interview the historical reasons for why Buddhism has received special treatment, with its modernist claim that it is fundamentally different than Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism.  We dive into the confused understandings of mindfulness meditation which has been portrayed as a privatized “inner telescope” to objectively view our interior minds (brains), along with the misguided attempt to map meditative experiences onto brain states and neural correlates (Neural Buddhism).  Evan challenges the popular view that Buddhism is compatible with science, and that science can validate Buddhist insights. Drawing on his intimate friendship and collaboration with the late Francisco Varela (a key founder of the Mind & Life Institute) he takes aim at how the so-called Buddhism – Science “dialogue” has been one-sided and stifling of mutual learning. Evan Thompson is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He writes about the mind, life, consciousness, and the self, from the perspectives of cognitive science, philosophy of mind, phenomenology, and cross-cultural philosophy (especially Buddhism and other Indian philosophical traditions). As a teenager, Evan was home-schooled in Southampton, NY and Manhattan at the Lindisfarne Association, an educational and contemplative community founded by his parents, William Irwin Thompson and Gail Thompson. He received his A.B. in Asian Studies from Amherst College (1983) studying with Robert Thurman, and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Toronto (1990). Evan has been actively involved as one of the leading researchers and advisers for the Mind & Life Institute. We spoke today with Evan about his new book, Why I Am Not A Buddhist, published by Yale University Press in 2020. He is the author of Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy (Columbia University Press, 2015); He is also the co-author with Francisco J. Varela and Eleanor Rosch, of The Embodied Mind: Cognitive Science and Human Experience (MIT Press, 1991, revised edition 2016).

For the full interview: ⭐ https://nightclub.andrewholecek.com/interviews/evan-thompson/ Join Andrew and celebrated philosopher Evan Thompson in a remarkable conversation that covers a vast terrain of topics. The discussion begins with a look at enactivism, the revolutionary concept explored with neuroscientist Francesco Varela in the landmark book The Embodied Mind, co-authored with Evan. The enactive view provides a platform for “I-making” as explored in Dr. Thompson's most recent book, Waking Dreaming Being – that the self is an ongoing process of construction, a process that can be explored as the sense of self trans-forms when we fall into sleep and dream. The conversation then turns to “quantum phenomenology,” Evan's term for the highly discerning mind developed by meditators. In this context they explore the difference between access consciousness and phenomenal consciousness, a distinction that is critical for lucid dreamers. The discussion then makes the important distinction between consciousness (which is dualistic) and awareness (which is non-dualistic), and then transitions to examine the place of psychedelics in exploring the nature of mind, and a provocative look at out-of-body (OBE) experiences, which are usually altered-embodied experiences. Most OBE's are probably lucid dreams, and you can test this in your own dreams. Evan concludes with a look at his next book, Why I am NOT a Buddhist, and the many shadow elements of Buddhist modernism, and the promise and peril of East-West cross-pollination -- which can easily slip into cross-pollution.The discussion ends with a look at Buddhist exceptionalism, and the novel idea of cosmopolitanism. Evan Thompson discusses Embodied Cognition, 4E Cognition, and the problems with studying the mechanisms of mindfulness from a brain-only perspective. Evan is a writer and professor of philosophy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He works on the nature of the mind, the self, and human experience by combining cognitive science, philosophy of mind, phenomenology, and cross-cultural philosophy, especially Asian philosophical traditions. Evan holds a thoughtful, critical view in these times of turbulence regarding mindfulness research and methods of delivery, "Mindfulness is not in the head. Being mindful is an embodied, social practice not a private mental state or special pattern of bring activity. Mindfulness is embodied understanding.” The best place to find out more about Evan's work is his website.  His books include, Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy (Columbia University Press, 2015); Mind in Life: Biology, Phenomenology, and the Sciences of Mind (Harvard University Press, 2007); and Colour Vision: A Study in Cognitive Science and the Philosophy of Perception (Routledge Press, 1995). On this week’s episode we talk grief, loss, and why things don’t always get better with time. Over the weekend, (while headed to a date, no less) Ashley was overcome by grief after having a fleeting thought of her mom who died 8 years ago. She tried to process it quickly and gain some composure, as not to mess up her flawless makeup. But the moment of sorrow seeped into the rest of her night as a somber reminder of how grief doesn’t care about hot dates. Listen as we talk the stages of grief, how to live after loss, and how we honor and remember those who are gone.   Join Ashley for the (Back to) Schoolin Life Dinner & Cocktail Party, Friday, August 17, 2018 at 6:00 PM. The quest for an explanation of consciousness is currently dominated by scientific efforts to find the neural correlates of conscious states, on the assumption that these states are dependent on the brain. A very different way of exploring consciousness is undertaken within various Indian religious traditions, in which subtle states of consciousness and transitions between such states can be revealed through meditation. In Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy (Columbia University Press, 2014), Evan Thompson draws on neuroscience and these meditative traditions to illuminate consciousness and the nature of the self while avoiding both neuro-reductionist and spiritualist agendas. Thompson, who is a professor of philosophy at the University of British Columbia, develops a view of our sense of self as an emergent process of “I-making” that is constructed in relation to our environment and the body on which it depends.
