Ralph Galati shares the story of his harrowing experience as a prisoner of war (POW) during the Vietnam War. Galati's capture occurred during Operation Linebacker, an air campaign aimed at disrupting North Vietnamese supply lines and military infrastructure. On February 16, 1972, while on a mission, Galati's F-4 Phantom II was struck by enemy fire. Ejecting from the aircraft, he and his fellow pilot, Bill Hill, were quickly captured by North Vietnamese forces. They were then transported to the infamous “Hanoi Hilton,” nickname of the Hoa Lo Prison. The conditions at the Hanoi Hilton were severe, with prisoners subjected to physical and psychological torture, malnutrition, and isolation. Despite these conditions, Galati, like many of his fellow POWs, displayed remarkable resilience. The camaraderie among the prisoners was crucial to their survival, as they developed a covert communication system using taps and codes to maintain morale and share information. This support network helped them endure the harsh treatment and isolation imposed by their captors. Galati's faith and determination played a significant role in his ability to withstand the hardships of captivity. He has often spoken about how his belief in God and his love for his family gave him the strength to persevere. His experience as a POW also deepened his sense of duty and commitment to his fellow servicemen, inspiring him to become a strong advocate for veterans' issues after his release. After spending nearly 14 months in captivity, Ralph Galati was released on March 28, 1973, as part of Operation Homecoming, the repatriation of American POWs following the Paris Peace Accords. Upon returning to the United States, he transitioned from active duty to a role in the Air Force Reserves and later pursued a civilian career in business and education. Galati has been an active voice in veteran communities, sharing his story to inspire and educate others about the realities of war and the resilience of the human spirit. He has worked extensively with organizations that support veterans and their families, emphasizing the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by servicemen and women. His story is not just one of survival but also of leadership and service, as he continues to dedicate his life to helping others, particularly those who have served in the military. #vietnamwar  #vietnamveterans  #airforce  #militaryhistory #veteran #interview #veterans #vet #veteransbreakfastclub #vbc #virtualevents #virtual #zoom #zoomevents #liveevent #webinar #military #army #usarmy #navy #usnavy #marinecorps #marines #airforce #pilot #aviators #coastguard #nonprofit #501c3 #history  #militaryveterans #veteransstories #veteranshistory #veteraninterview #veteranshistoryproject #veteransoralhistory #veteranowned #militaryretirees #armyretirees #navyretirees #warstories #vietnam #vietnamwar #vietnamveterans #koreanwar #coldwar #greatestgeneration #wwii #ww2  #worldwar2 #war #americanhistory #oralhistory #podcast  #scuttlebutt #thescuttlebutt #humor #storytelling #headlines #news #roundtable #breakfast  #happyhour #thirtyyearswar  We're grateful to UPMC for Life and Tobacco Free Adagio Health for sponsoring this event!

They don't have enough money, they can't feed themselves, they don't have any hope because they don't know what's coming down the road. " Sean McCann, trauma psychotherapistIn part three of The Ferret investigates…the health gap – a three-part special podcast from The Ferret media co-op and Greater Govanhill magazine – we turn our attention to the mental wellbeing of young and middle aged men, another issue driving health inequalities in Scotland. In Scotland, men in the most deprived areas of Scotland have a life expectancy of almost 14 years less than those in the most affluent areas. Of the 753 people that completed suicide in 2021, three quarters were men. In this episode we hear from James, a joiner from Glasgow, about his struggles with his mental health and Bill Hill of the Lighthouse charity tells us about the way the construction industry, which is currently losing two workers to suicide every day, has been forced to mobilise to save lives. We also visit San Francisco's Harm Reduction Therapy Center and find out how offering people struggling with substance use therapy on the street is dismantling the myth that some are hard to reach. Workers in the construction industry are three times more likely to commit suicide than the general population but for those working in the building trades the risk is much higher at eight times. These are stark figures but construction industry charity the Lighthouse Club launched a new campaign called #Makeitvisible at the start of this year that is already making a difference. Lighthouse Club chief executive Bill Hill joined NCE editor Claire Smith and assistant news editor Rob Hakimian for this episode to talk about why the Construction Leadership Council called on the charity to take the lead on the issue and what the campaign involves. Bill outlines the four elements of the work which cover reactive and proactive strategies, research into delivering long term cultural change and how the impact will be measured. During the conversation, Bill talks about how Ford and Speedy Hire have sponsored vans for people from the construction industry who have been affected by poor mental health but have since trained as mental health first aider to go out and visit sites to talk about the issues and resources available. Bill shared with Claire and Rob that the programme has already delivered 87 interventions for people who were suicidal demonstrating the potential impact this initiative could have in the long term. One of the key factors of #Makeitvisible to ensuring people know how to access support and Bill calls on all firms to include the campaign's video within safety briefings for every site. It can be viewed and downloaded by clicking here. As well as talking about #Makeitvisible, Bill also gives advice specific to both business owners and employees about what they could do today to support colleagues and improve wellbeing in the sector. Claire concludes the podcast by urging anyone dealing with any of the issues discussed to seek help and support as early as possible and not to struggle alone. She also shares a number of resources, which are listed here: Any construction worker or their family can access the MakeItVisible.info portal, you can call the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity 24/7 Helpline on 0345 605 1956 or you can text HARDHAT to 85258 for immediate text back support. Also remember that the Samaritans helpline is available to everyone and you can call them at anytime to talk about yourself, a friend or a colleague on 116 123. Mates in Mind also has a lot of resources specific to the construction sector, which businesses can use to support staff or individuals and is also available to people working in the sector and you can find these at www.matesinmind.org Since the pandemic the Institution of Civil Engineers' Benevolent Fund has also evolved its services to go beyond financially helping members who are struggling to include outreach on wellbeing issues too. There is a free 24 hour wellbeing helpline that you can access by calling 0800 587 3428 from the UK or for international callers, it is available on +44 1482 699 177 and there are more details online at www.icebenfund.com The Engineer's Collective is powered by Seequent, the subsurface software specialists. Welcome back! This episode has been one that I recorded back in January and have been sitting on ever since. And why is that, you ask? Life can provide so many distractions it's so easy to slip into the monotony of it all and stay on autopilot. The thought of pulling out my podcast equipment turned into just another thing I had to add to my overgrowing list of things to do and so, I didn't do it. I kept my plane on autopilot and kept going through the motions life. What finally got me to sing a different tune was the book, It's Great to Suck at Something by Karen Rinaldi. Her book gave me the much needed reminder of participating in doing the things that give us JOY, even if we suck at it. So the idea of dusting the cobwebs off of my podcast equipment changed from just another thing to do on the laundry list of life to the heart-fluttering excitement of engaging something that I'm not totally confident in doing but am passionate about doing. The second I put my headphones on and leaned down towards the microphone, I couldn't stop smiling. It was like a gust of fresh air swept over me, breathing life back into the autopilot saying HELLO, DON'T FORGET ABOUT ME! Ironically, or more likely serendipitously, there were a lot of points in this episode that included the idea of participating and engaging in life. It's what makes us feel most alive! This episode I have Kathleen Ponzo join us to talk about her wonderful, fabulous, late husband, Bill Hill. The episode talks through a range of topics such as hospice, advanced directives, funeral planning, Swedish death cleaning, and really about being intentional in how we move through life when we know we're going to die (which, *spoiler*, we will ALL die someday). If you feel so inspired after this episode, I encorage you to participate in life today by writing someone a letter, giving them a call, or even simply remember someone you love, whether they've died or are still here today. Let love fill your body and let yourself feel alive. Thank you, Kathleen! (And if anyone has a connect to the B-52's, HIT A GIRL UP!) xoxo

Clive started off the week by taking a look at the Rail Strikes that gripped the nation last week and asked if members of the Construction Industry were affected. With Airlines set to strike throughout the summer, is there a possibility that our industry might strike? He put this question to Andy Prendergast, National Secretary for the GMB union, and friends of the show and tradespeople Danny Madden and Kye Belmont.Clive then focused on if Career Switchers are the answer to labor shortage? A quarter of a million workers are needed to fill the void that will be left by 2026. 28% of Brits that work or used to work in the corporate sector/professional services agreed they are considering or have already kicked off a career in the trades. So is this the answer? Jackie Ducker Exec Director of Customer & Product at CITB, Joe Doyle - Business Mentor for tradespeople and Electrician, Nick Bundy gave their thoughts on this. Then he took a look at the question if stereotypes are still running rampant in the industry. This was in conjunction with an article in the Daily Mail saying that builders had gone Woke ! Clive spoke to Bill Hill, CEO of the Construction Industry Charity The Lighthouse Club, Irish Builder and TV Presenter Peter Finn and Former Tradesperson now Business and Life Coach Wayne Bettess all about this. And to finish off proceedings, in conjunction with International Joke day being on the 1st of July, he discussed the best jokes people have heard. In this introductory episode for a series specifically about tracking, I introduce the concept of tracking by discussing what tracking is, why we as humans are all equipped to be trackers, why our history as trackers contributes to our capability to read words on paper, among other things, and the possibilities and feats of skilled trackers. I also discuss some basic terminology, talk about the meta-level questions of Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How, which outlines the various arts of tracking including identification, interpretation, aging, trailing, ecology, and intuition respectively. Next I discuss some techniques for learning how to track including the prerequisite of curiosity, the importance of dirt time, how to study tracks, utilizing animal forms (moving like the animal), the importance of the sit spot, and the benefits of tracking with a buddy.
