Theories that standardized testing impeded equity in admissions decisions drove the pandemic-era test optional movement. With a few years of real-world data, we can now examine the accuracy of those theories. Amy and Mike invited student advocate Dr. Yoon Choi to revisit the review of testing policies and educational equity. What are five things you will learn in this episode? 1. What does the research say about testing and equity? 2. How do standardized tests help predict college readiness? 3. Why do many states and school districts in the U.S. use the SAT and ACT tests as part of their high school graduation requirements, accountability and evaluation systems? 4. What might surprise people about the research on testing? 5. Instead of casting blame on the tests themselves, what should those who want to improve education and equity focus on? MEET OUR GUEST Dr. Yoon S. Choi is CEO of CollegeSpring, a national nonprofit that helps schools and teachers provide free SAT and ACT prep to students from low-income backgrounds. She has over a decade of leadership, management, and fundraising experience, primarily with organizations serving underrepresented youth. In 2020, she was named a Presidential Leadership Scholar by the program led by the presidential centers of George W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Lyndon B. Johnson. She has published articles about testing and college access in Inside Higher Ed, The Hechinger Report, and EdSource. Yoon earned her doctorate in anthropology from the University of California at Irvine, as well as a master's degree from New York University and a bachelor's degree from Scripps College. Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Ed Djerejian says Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin once told him “There is no military solution to this conflict, only a political one.” Rabin was assassinated a few years later and today bullets are flying, bombs are falling, and 1,200 Israelis are dead after the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7 and nearly 30,000 Gazans have been killed in the Israeli response. Yet Djerejain still believes that a breakthrough is possible even in the current moment, as horrible as it is. Djerejian, a senior fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Relations, says the crisis has shaken the regional status quo to the point where—if the United States pursues diplomacy that includes principled pragmatism, coalition-building, and good old- fashioned backbone—a breakthrough may finally be possible. But in a recent paper he argues that any breakthrough will have to be built around a two-state solution, which he says is the only path to peace and stability not only in Israel and Palestine, but the wider Middle East. Djerejian's career as a diplomat spanned eight U.S. presidential administrations beginning with John F. Kennedy's, and he also served as U.S. Ambassador to Syria and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Ed Djerejian's Policy Recommendations:The U.S. should stake out a strong, principled position on a two-state solution based on land for peace. The U.S. should build a broad multinational coalition around its diplomacy in the region.U.S. leaders and diplomats should make American national security interests clear, both globally and in the region.Ambassador (Ret.) Edward P. Djerejian is a residential Senior Fellow at the Middle East Initiative in Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Relations. Djerejian joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1962 and his 32-year diplomatic career spanned eight presidential administrations from John F. Kennedy to William J. Clinton. Djerejian is a leading expert on national security, foreign policy, public diplomacy, and the complex political, security, economic, religious, and ethnic issues of the broader Middle East. He is the author of “Danger and Opportunity: An American Ambassador's Journey Through the Middle East.” He recently completed a nearly 30-year tenure as founding director of Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy. Ambassador Djerejian graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in 1960. He received an Honorary Doctorate in the Humanities from his alma mater in 1992 and a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from Middlebury College. He speaks Arabic, Russian, French, and Armenian. His many awards and honors include the Presidential Distinguished Service Award, the Department of State's Distinguished Honor Award, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Anti-Defamation League's Moral Statesman Award, the Award for Humanitarian Diplomacy from Netanya Academic College in Israel, the National Order of the Cedar. The Price of Freedom is an unflinching look at the gun violence epidemic in America and the role the National Rifle Association, with its outsized political and cultural influence, has played over time. The NRA believes the deaths of innocent Americans are a necessary price to pay for the freedom to own firearms without restrictions. By manipulating the narrative around guns and backing politicians who commit to upholding their agenda, the NRA has cost us far more than we realize. Featuring passionate pleas from President William J. Clinton, Representative Lucy McBath (D-GA) and Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT); NRA Board Member and former NRA President David Keene, and activists on all sides of the issue, The Price of Freedom presents a compelling case for those brave enough to take a stand against the NRA in defense of our communities and collective future. Director Judd Ehrlich joins us for a conversation on how the NRA has abandoned its founding principles of promoting safe and responsible gun ownership through locally-based training programs into a shameless shill for gun manufacturers and more recently into a pernicious, corrosive and ruthlessly divisive political force in American culture and governance. Today's episode is all about William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States, the first baby boomer to hold the office, and indeed, the second youngest man ever elected president. Clinton's legacy is ongoing and a work in progress even now nearly thirty years since he took office. Changing political winds, changes within the democratic party in particular, a changing sensibility over welfare and the war on crime, and let's face it, a different sensibility of what constituted sexual harassment than was the case during the early 1990s have all changed how we view not only this period, but this man. And we're going to get into all of it today, as we rush forward through the 1990s across the bridge to the 21st century, with Bill Clinton, a complicated, fascinating, conundrum of a man, whose political enemies and allies alike nearly universally agree was the greatest natural politician of his generation—with perhaps the greatest unfulfilled promise. We began with Dr. Sarah Coleman, author of The Walls Within: The Politics of Immigration in Modern America, but more importantly, a much beloved alum of the CPH Post-doc program. We then turned the conversation to Dr. Carly Goodman, one of the nation's leading experts on the confusing but critical US Visa Lottery, and also a co-editor of the Washington Post's influential “Made by History” series. Together our guests illuminated two key themes. First, changes in immigration policy were changing the face of AmericaSecond, new media, in particular right wing media, responded with anxiety to that changing faceTo learn more, visit pastpromisepresidency.com.

President-elect Joe Biden will enter office today during one of the most chaotic periods of American history. With a raging pandemic, record unemployment numbers, and a recent assault against lawmakers in the Capitol, his administration will face a number of challenges in its first days in office. Obama and Clinton White House alum John Podesta joined Dany and Marc to talk about Democratic priorities and Biden’s first 100 days as president. He also discusses foreign policy concerns, Biden’s promise to unify the country, and the likelihood of bipartisan policy in a split Senate. John Podesta served as counselor to President Obama, where he was responsible for coordinating the administration’s climate policy and initiatives. In 2008, he served as co-chair of President Obama’s transition team. Podesta previously served as White House chief of staff to President William J. Clinton. https://www.aei.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/1.20.20-Podesta-transcript.pdf (Download the transcript here.)
**Weitere Nachrichten:** Rechtsextreme Polizei-Chat-Gruppen in NRW, Dritte Startbahn in München in weiter Ferne, verlängertes Kurzarbeitsgeld. **Moderation, Redaktion:** Lars Langenau **Redaktion:** Laura Terberl **Produktion:** Carolin Lenk _Zusätzliches Audiomaterial über die William J. Episode 8In this episode, Emma and Chloe try to define what feminism meant in the 90s, through two of its icons: Hillary Clinton and … Jane Austen? They explore Hillary Clinton’s political career in the 1990s, and what her brand of feminism meant then, and means today. They then talk about the many, many Jane Austen adaptations made in the 90s, from Clueless to Bridget Jones’ Diary, how Class and Empire were lost from Austen, and how they might be revived today.8.1 Stand By Your Man8.2 Handsome, clever, and rich8.3 A truth, universally acknowledgedLinksAmy Goldstein, “How the demise of her health-care plan led to the politician Clinton is today,” The Washington Post, August 25, 2016, https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/after-health-care-missteps-a-chastened-hillary-clinton-emerged/2016/08/25/2d200cb4-64b4-11e6-be4e-23fc4d4d12b4_story.htmlDavid A Graham, “A Short History of Hillary (Rodham) (Clinton)'s Changing Names,” The Atlantic, 30 November 2015, https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/11/a-short-history-of-hillary-rodham-clintons-name/418029/Monica Lewinksy, “Emerging from the ‘House of Gaslight’ in the Age of #MeToo,” Vanity Fair, 25 February 2018, https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/02/monica-lewinsky-in-the-age-of-metooAmanda Hess, “’Ditsy, Predatory White House Intern’: Looking back on how Maureen Dowd painted Monica Lewinsky as a crazy bimbo—and won a Pulitzer for it,” Slate, 7 May 2014, https://slate.com/human-interest/2014/05/monica-lewinsky-returns-how-maureen-dowd-caricatured-bill-clintons-mistress-as-a-crazy-bimbo.htmlOlivia B Waxmann and Merrill Fabry, “From an Anonymous Tip to an Impeachment: A Timeline of Key Moments in the Clinton-Lewinsky Scandal,” Time, 4 May 2018, https://time.com/5120561/bill-clinton-monica-lewinsky-timeline/Amy Davidson Sorkin, “Bill Problems: As Donald Trump attacks both Clintons, it’s like 1992 all over again,” The New Yorker, May 29, 2016, https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/06/06/hillarys-bill-problemZoe Williams, “Was Mark Darcy based on Keir Starmer? Emma and Chloe turn their attention to the USA, in a decade where America, for better or worse, defined the world order. They discuss the mixed achievements of Bill Clinton’s presidency, including the 1994 assault weapons ban that, while a huge success at the time was compromised by a ‘sunset clause’ that ensured no permanent change to American gun culture. They then consider Republican attempts to frustrate Clinton’s presidency, and the right-wing operatives who, after cameo appearances in the Clinton impeachment saga took leading roles in the Trump presidency. Finally, they look at how America remade the global economy in its own image, and in ways that served its own interests, and the market dogmatism that may now, finally, be unravelling in the liberal West.Dan Roberts, “Clintons continue to tout legacy where others see era of mistakes and scandal,” The Guardian, 22 May 2016.https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/may/21/hillary-clinton-bill-90s-nostalgia-reform-scandalPatrick Andelic, “As it celebrates its 25th birthday, how does the Clinton administration look today?” The Conversation, 17 January 2018.https://theconversation.com/as-it-celebrates-its-25th-birthday-how-does-the-clinton-administration-look-today-89718German Lopez, “Joe Biden's controversial criminal justice record, explained,” Vox, 26 August 2015.https://www.vox.com/2015/8/26/9208983/joe-biden-black-lives-matter?__c=1Ron Elving, “The U.S. Once Had A Ban On Assault Weapons — Why Did It Expire?” NPR, 13 August 2019.https://www.npr.org/2019/08/13/750656174/the-u-s-once-had-a-ban-on-assault-weapons-why-did-it-expireEd Pilkington, “How the Drudge Report ushered in the age of Trump,” The Guardian, 25 January 2018.https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jan/24/how-the-drudge-report-ushered-in-the-age-of-trumpDavid Smith, “Kenneth Starr, driver of Clinton impeachment, does about-face for Trump,” The Guardian, 28 January 2020https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/27/kenneth-starr-trump-impeachment-trialAndrew Chatzky, James McBride, and Mohammed Aly Sergie, “NAFTA and the USMCA: Weighing the Impact of North American Trade,” Council on Foreign Relations, 24 February 2020.https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/nafta-and-usmca-weighing-impact-north-american-tradeStephen Grenville, “No consensus on the Washington Consensus,” The Interpreter, 7 June 2017.https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/no-consensus-washington-consensus'Theme for Barely Getting' By' written and produced by Stuart Cullenhttp://stuartcullen.nethello@stuartcullen.netTony Blair, Madeleine Albright and Bill Clinton excerpts courtesy of The William J. Emma Shortis and Chloe Ward are back, for a nostalgic but-not-uncritical take on the 1990s and what it means for today. In three instalments, they outline the ideas and the political and economic forces that set out what the 1990s would look like. They start with the American political scientist Francis Fukuyama’s famous prediction of the ‘end of history’ and liberal triumph, before looking at the Cold War and its – surprising – peaceful end, and the much more cautious predictions about the future made by the historian Eric Hobsbawm.Links and referencesFrancis Fukuyama, ‘The End of History’, The National Interest, Summer 1989, 3-18.Louis Menand, ‘Francis Fukuyama Postpones the End of History’, New Yorker, 27 August 2018.Francis Fukuyama, ‘The Thing That Determines a Country’s Resistance to the Coronavirus’, The Atlantic, 30 March 2020.Eric Hobsbawm, The Age of Extremes: 1914-1991, Hachette, 2020.The Late Show – Interview with Eric Hobsbawm‘Eric Hobsbawm: A Life in Quotes’, Guardian, 1 October 2012.Damien Cave, ‘Vanquish the Virus? Juanita Broaddrick is this week's esteemed guest WOMENACE. One of the original (and reluctant) #metoo’s before there was even a #MeToo Movement, her 1978 sexual victimization by the General Attorney of Arkansas William J. Clinton heavily impacted the 2016 American Presidential election, and she only returned to our national consciousness because she responded to a tweet Hillary Clinton sent in 2015. Please welcome Juanita Broaddrick to the podcast. Please Stand With Survivors.
Twenty years after Columbine, a leading gun control activist offers a radical argument for the gun control movement our country desperately needs Ninety-six people die from guns in America every single day. Twelve thousand Americans are murdered each year. The United States has more mass shootings, gun suicides, and nonfatal gun injuries than any other industrialized country in the world. Gun-safety advocates have tried to solve these problems with incremental changes such as background checks and banning assault style military weapons. They have fallen short. In order to significantly and permanently reduce gun deaths the United States needs a bold new approach: a drastic reduction of the 390 million guns already in circulation and a new movement dedicated to a future with fewer guns. In Guns Down, Igor Volsky tells the story of how he took on the NRA just by using his Twitter account, describes how he found common ground with gun enthusiasts after spending two days shooting guns in the desert, and lays out a blueprint for how citizens can push their governments to reduce the number of guns in circulation and make firearms significantly harder to get. An aggressive licensing and registration initiative, federal and state buybacks of millions of guns, and tighter regulation of the gun industry, the gun lobby, and gun sellers will build safer communities for all. Volsky outlines a New Second Amendment Compact developed with policy experts from across the political spectrum, including bold reforms that have succeeded in reducing gun violence worldwide, and offers a road map for achieving transformative change to increase safety in our communities. “A short, direct, crystal-clear, and urgent call to action certain to get a blast from the NRA.” —Kirkus Reviews “Anyone who wants to help build safe American communities must read this book.” —Alyssa Milano, actress and producer “Finally a voice—not of mere reason or common sense—but a basic, radical embrace of the fact that we DO need to take away guns. And we need to shape a new ideology, not placate or follow or change by piecemeal the gun lobby’s broken litany of the past. We need more voices, like Igor Volsky’s, who dare to voice the truth: we have too many guns.” —Alan Cumming, actor and humanitarian “Igor Volsky sets out a long-term vision for the gun violence prevention movement—a country with fewer guns. That’s a goal that all political candidates—especially progressives—should take seriously, especially as the clout and political power of the NRA continues to shrink.” —John Podesta, White House Chief of Staff to President William J. Clinton “This book is the wake-up call America needs. Guns Down is an unapologetic, bold, evidence-based call for radical change. Appeasements and baby steps will not end the gun violence epidemic that has gripped our country. The plan, in this book, will.” —Debra Messing, actor
My guest today is Michelle Durpetti of Michelle Durpetti Events! Michelle wears so many hats including luxury wedding & event planner, hospitality group co-owner, equestrian, speaker and MORE. I was furiously taking notes during this interview because Michelle is full of tangible, raw and practical advice that I didn't want to miss! Today Michelle is spending time with us chatting about balance, branding and the importance of collaboration in our industry! Here's more about Michelle: I founded this company in 2008, founded on the principle that event planners must be good sources of creative ideas combined with practical experience, flexibility, and know-how to manage an event from beginning to end. Since then, I am proud to say that we have been privileged to work with corporate, social and non-profit clients, producing numerous events throughout the country. In 2010, I decided to expand our list of services to include wedding coordination and destination management in addition to event management and creative development. I am the third generation of entrepreneurial spirit and passionately dedicated to the evolution of my company and our perpetual commitment to excellence with each of our clients. I began my career with an internship at Jasculca/Terman & Associates in Chicago, a public relations firm specializing in PR and event management. A highlight of my time there was having the chance to be a part of the team that produced the dedication ceremony for the grand opening of the William J. Clinton presidential library in Little Rock, Arkansas. It was an incredible experience, and the lessons that I learned from it are ones that I still carry with me today, and apply to every event and wedding that I produce. While it may seem unrelated, learning how to produce a live event for a crowd of 30,000 people that was televised live across the globe provided me with a key component to what separates MDE from so many other planning firms out there; logistics management and timing are where the focus is centered. After discovering the incredible healing properties of bee propolis while abroad, she set out on a mission to share the wonders from the hive and educate people on the integral role the bees play in our ecosystem. It wasn't long until she swapped her 16 hour days on the trading floor to head up Beekeeper's Naturals full time. When most people think about world hunger and poverty, they often think of Vitamin A deficiency impacting vision or distended abdomens from protein deficiency in developing countries. Oddly, a much bigger problem affects people across the globe: iron deficiency. Professor Davidson’s talk is entitled “Now You See It: How the Science of Attention Can Help Us Succeed in a World of Distractions.” She gave a version of this talk recently at a private leadership workshop of 80 of the world’s most influential CEOs and CIOs, a gathering that included President William J. Clinton. She is very excited to compare the engaged, lively conversation the talk generated among world leaders with that of the University Scholars–and has promised to report back on what “the next generation” has to say on urgent matters of attention, learning, technology, and the new ways we live, work, and lead together.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States, speaks at Yale University's 2010 Class Day.
Ona Move! Thank you, Re-Create '68, for inviting me to join your efforts in Denver, to practice real democracy in the shadows of the Empire. When I think of the DNC, I'm reminded of the words of the great French writer, Voltaire, who, when speaking of the Holy Roman Empire, quipped it "was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire." The Democratic National Committee is neither democratic, nor national, nor a committee. If it were democratic why would it reject the voices of the people, who protest against its rule? If it were national, it wouldn't be driven by imperialist and globalist corporate interests. (Let us not forget William J. Clinton - perhaps the best known globalist (NAFTA?) in the country). And if it were truly a committee then anybody could join it - not just the political puppets of corporate power. In 1968, a Democratic mayor named Daley unleashed brutal and vicious cops on people who dared protest against the Democratic Party's support for the atrocities in Vietnam. Those young people were allegedly protected under the free speech 'guarantees' of the Constitution. Instead, they got the crap beat out them. It was imperial war then - and it's imperial war now, and only the names and faces have changed (some names - there's still a Mayor Daley in Chicago). In fact, things are more repressive today than they were in '68, for then, anti-war activists and students could at least march through the streets. They got their asses whipped, but at least they marched. Today, city governments have built cages for protest. So much for respect for the constitution! Now, as in LA 2000, you can get your ass whipped -- in a cage! That is what American democracy looks like in 2008. For another idea, look at what Pakistan did a few days ago. When the head-of-state violated the constitution, the people took to the streets. When he brought out the troops, they continued to protest. And they demanded impeachment! There, democracy forced a dictator to resign! There, democracy marches - ona move! Here, democracy is in cages, hidden in the boondocks, while alleged representatives sell their souls to the highest corporate bidder, to further the interests of imperial war. Here, politicians take the label of 'democrat', hire the cops to beat you, hire the media to slander you, so that they can send your children to war for oil pipelines, or to protect foreign despots and princes. Here, democracy is on life-support, while paid-for politicians give mouth to mouth to imperialism, rampant globalization and the ravaging of the poor. Our revered ancestor Frederick Douglass said, "Power concedes nothing without demand. It never has and never will." Your protests are in that great spirit of resistance. We only need more! Ona Move! Long Live John Africa! I thank you all! Mumia Abu-Jamal (c) '08 maj

Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My kid Max has been doing a radio show called "Kid Power Radio" for awhile now and you should check it out. Tiffany from The Daily Candy called his family friendly radio show "Hilarious!" This is a great show for your kids. It is kind of like a kids version of David Spade's "Showbiz Show" on Comedy Central or Entertainment Tonight mixed in with a little Wayne's World. Max recaps the week in entertainment and gives his take and review of what he liked and didn't like on TV, at the movies, video games, in books and in music and even restaurant reviews. Please go to his site and download the show for your kid. He had a big show recently he interviewed Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. And if your kid sends Max an email he'll read it on the air next week. The show can be found at www.kidpowerradio.com and you can email Max at RadioStarMax at Yahoo.com. He has gotten emails from kids from England, Australia, China and even the US. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thanks to you his show is rocketing up the charts!!!
