Watch ARNOLD for free on Youtube or buy the gorgeous new Blu-Ray from Vinegar Syndrome.Say goodbye to ScreamQueenz with ARNOLD, a delightfully bizarre but tragically forgotten horror comedy of 1973.In the first five minutes of ARNOLD, a gold-digging flight attendant marries a corpse...and that's the least weird thing that happens for the rest of the movie. It's the kind of movie that makes you ask, "Are the straights ok???"ARNOLD combines classic Gothic horror elements like a creepy old house filled with secret passages and peekaboo portraits with a kitschy star-studded cast so dripping in 1970's kitsch, they deserve their own episode of the Love Boat.So squeeze into the gondola with my special guests TRAE DEAN, DOUG SHAPIRO as we take one last ride through the ScreamQueenz Spookhouse, but whatever you do...DON'T keep your hands to yourself!****If you're in New Hampshire, catch Doug Shapiro in a show at the Barnstormers Theater.ARNOLD was directed by Georg Fenady, written by Jameson Brewer & John Fenton Murray and stars Stella Stevens, Roddy McDowell, Elsa Lanchester, Shani Willlis, Bernard Fox, Farley Granger, Jaime Farr and Victor Buono.Mentioned in this episode:Bliss BookPick up the gnarly new survivor horror novel BLISS by Brandon Halsey on Amazon! In potentially the biggest story of the Season (somehow even bigger than the Fifth Doctor's debut in Castrovalva), we have Cybermen! Androids! Gritty troopers and gritty freighter crew! Oh, and we say goodbye to a much loved (lol) companion in what is quite possibly the most dramatic way since… well… the 1960s? Yup, it's Earthshock! Join us as we discuss how the designers on Starship Troopers must've been huge Doctor Who fans, how the Cybermen seem to have recruited Daft Punk to do their dirty work, their completely bonkers plan, how Captain Briggs is surprisingly enjoyable (even if she was played as if she were your drunken Aunt), and, of course, we have to talk about THE ending of the story. Poor Diana has to say goodbye to Adric – and she may have even shed a tear or two… If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). In this episode, we dial in our love for Agatha Christie and Charlotte Brontë, as we discuss Black Orchid. How they were able to pack so much character intertaction AND a self-indulgent cricked match into only two episodes, we will never know. Join us as we discuss the introduction of our new favourite hero (or villain) in Gurgle Man, Sarah Sutton finally being able to show off her acting chops, the Watchers' new unit of measure: units of Adrics, and Anthony absolutely having a childhood moment with time spent around trains. Yes, in another life, he must have been a train engineer. We are so happy that we finally have a happy little TARDIS crew, despite the darker direction of the show. Best Pick with John Dorney, Jessica Regan and Tom Salinsky Episode 319: Vertigo Released 25 June 2025 For this episode, we watched the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo starring James Stewart and Kim Novak, based on the French novel The Living and the Dead by Boileau and Narcejac and with a screenplay credited to Alec Coppel and Samuel Taylor. It's a favourite of countless subsequent movie makers and topped the 2012 Sight and Sound poll before being pushed down into second place by Jeanne Dielman in 2022. A pesar de momentos en los que es cuestionable su lógica, Drop llega a ser un filme entretenido con su tangente un tanto reminiscente a Red Eye. El filme está disponible para comprarse en Blu-Ray y en plataformas Video On Demand.
I'm happy to have author David Annandale return to the podcast to talk about low budget genre cinema again! Severin has issued a fantastic Blu-Ray of the film UNKNOWN WORLD (1951) so we use this release to dig into the little-discussed science fiction movie. Often seen in terrible, dark prints in various places around the internet this one deserves more attention, so we were both thrilled that it is now sharp and beautiful in its black & white HD glory. Did it look this good in '51? For a film produced by a couple of special effects artists UNKNOWN WORLD certainly has a lot on its mind. It is one of the earliest examples of apocalyptic nuclear ‘doom warning' movies and we wonder if that fact is why it is less well known than later movies of this type. We discuss the cast and crew of this nine-day wonder including the oddity of the primary actor not getting screen credit. We lament the very few acting roles of the female lead and ramble through the credits of several other actors as well. We point out the solid effects work and marvel over the fantastic matte shots. Of course, we do acknowledge the weaknesses of the film and how its (intentionally?) dull middle segment can make the running time seem longer than it actually is. So, strap yourself in the Cyclotram and lets go caving! If you have anything to say about this film or any others that we have covered thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.
FULL VERSION. Filmmaker Doug Roos (BAKEMONO) joins Adam and Joe in the ArieScope studio to discuss his international career journey and shooting his latest film in Japan. From seeing ALIENS at age 6 and falling in love with genre cinema… to his fascination with making his own monsters and starting out with nothing but clear plastic bags and a flashlight… to making his first short film at 12 years old and why 1993's CARNOSAUR was such an inspiration to him… to making films in China before relocating to Japan where he has been living for the last 7 years… to being told “it's too expensive to shoot a movie in Japan” and accepting the statement as a challenge… to learning about the dark side of Tokyo from actor friends and conceiving the idea for BAKEMONO… to how he made the incredible creature effects himself on an extremely limited budget and why he chose to tell the story of BAKEMONO in a “non-linear” structure… to why he waited to crowd fund the film until he already had footage to show the world… to the hurdles of promoting his film through his own efforts and positive word of mouth alone, Doug is an inspiration for anyone out there who is tired of waiting for permission and ready to make their own movie happen. Pick up your own Blu-Ray copy of BAKEMONO here: https://www.allpracticalfx.com/ OR get the fully loaded version (special features, more nudity, more gore) here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/new-monster-film-bakemono-no-cgi-horror-movie#/ Don't miss YORKIETHON IX - The Movie Crypt's 9th annual LIVE charity event for Save A Yorkie Rescue - happening July 25th - 27th! Today, he's a notable writer, filmmaker, and artist (Letterboxd called him "The Godfather of Queer"). And as a young man trying to figure out his place as a person and as an artist, Bruce LaBruce was instantly fascinated by the films MAKING LOVE (1982) and LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR (1977). While the two films are very different in tone, execution, and commercial success, they both center around characters who are living lives that break away from oppressive cultural norms around sex and sexuality.
