The Black Guardian Trilogy comes to an end in Enlightenment with a space race on Edwardian-inspired ships, where a dominatrix threatens Turlough, a creepy Eternal hits on Tegan, and the Black and White Guardians end as they started this three-story run: disappointingly. Still, it gives Anthony an opportunity to utter: “step on me, Mommy!” Just wow. Unsurprisingly, we discuss the sartorial choices of the two Guardians (and which ones Reilly and Anthony will respectively cosplay), how “Officer Creepy” made Julie want to take a shower, the joys of sailing ships in space, the correct pronunciation of “buoy,” Captain Wrack's rack (obviously), and how Nietzsche fits into all this… and speaking of philosophy, we have a rousing debate on the ethics of throwing an Eternal into the cold vacuum of space… If you would like to watch along with us, you can find this story available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). We are back after a hiatus to discuss the new release of the "One to One" concert from 1972 featuring John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Elephant's Memory. This concert appears in a beautifully remixed version that substantially improves over the 1986 John Lennon: Live in New York City release. But how does the concert hold up all these years later, and what about the set list, performances, and political messaging? We dig into all of it! Because only the concert was available on streaming (as of the time of recording), we do not discuss the other parts of the Power to the People box set, but we plan to do that as discs get released over the next few months.

Friends,Is there any ghost lore in your town or where you grew up?Have you ever seen a ghost? What are ghosts, anyway?Three questions, three different ways to approach (or be approached by ghosts).Ghosts are at the heart of our folktales, our fears, and our fiction. And belief in them is almost universal. Unlike aliens, UFOs, cryptids, and other strange entities, belief in ghosts cuts across all demographics and borders. We're afraid of ghosts and fascinated by them.As you probably know from listening to this show, or if you've read my novel Hawk Mountain, horror is deeply important to me: in forming my imagination, my way of thinking, and even my lens on spirituality. To that end, this is one of two podcasts on the topic. This time, I just wanted to be personal, to have fun, to explore the pleasure of horror and the many springboards it gives us for conversation. To that end, I invited the hosts of my favorite movie podcast (maybe favorite podcast ever) THE IMPORTANT CINEMA CLUB onto the show, JUSTIN DECLOUX and WILL SLOAN.This marks the second crossover between our shows, as I appeared on episode 422 of The Important Cinema Club to talk about working with director Joe Gage.We ask the three questions up top, and explore three completely different representations of ghosts in movies:A Chinese Ghost Story (1987 dir. Tony Ching Siu-Tung)The Eclipse (2009, dir. Conor McPherson)I Am A Ghost (2012, dir. H.P. Mendoza)We summarize each movie, and then go in... tons of directions. I loved recording this episode, and I hope you do too. Next time, onto the more theoretical-serious kind of fun.Aside from The Important Cinema Club, Justin and Will have many projects.Justin is the author Radioactive Dreams: The Cinema of Albert Pyun, and has a Blu-Ray distribution company, Gold Ninja Video. He's also the director of films including Impossible Horror , which Will is in, and Teddy Bomb. Will's new book is Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood USA, and he has a great substack here.An episode that ties into this one, and that has more of my ghost stories in it than this one is AEWCH 138 with Edward Parnell, talking about ghosts embedded in the landscape. And I mention a great book towards the end, Paranormal America: Ghost Encounters, UFO Sightings, Bigfoot Hunts, and Other Curiosities in Religion and Culture.SUPPORT THIS SHOW: PATREON.COM/CONNERHABIB

A bunch of products and services seem to be going end-of-life all at once right now, so we did a round-up of some notable ones this week. Believe it or not, the venerable TiVo line of set-top TV recorders was still in service right up until this past week, so we pay tribute to this product that changed everything in the television space (and apparently the open source licensing space). Of course, we also have to do a check-in with Windows 10 now that its EOL date has come and gone, and the options for extended support have become clearer. Lastly, we wrap up with some tidbits about the rapid disappearance of the BD-ROM drive from retail, the end of AOL's dial-up service, and more.Windows 10 ESU: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/extended-security-updatesWindows LTSC FAQ: https://massgrave.dev/windows_ltsc_linksTiVo is done: https://cordcuttersnews.com/tivo-stops-selling-dvrs-marking-the-end-of-an-era/Pioneer sells off its BD-ROM business: https://www.techpowerup.com/336803/pioneer-has-ended-production-of-computer-blu-ray-drives-transfers-pddm-business-to-shanxi-group Support the Pod! Join us this episode as we ask the big question: How does the Big Bang happen because of something that happens after the Big Bang? See if we ever find out as we discuss the second story of the Black Guardian trilogy, Terminus. It should come as no surprise that this story garnered some strong feelings from our crew. Did Anthony really want to rewrite almost all interactions and plot regarding the Doctor and his companions? Absolutely. And did Reilly have lots of thoughts regarding redheads in this story? Seems so. But nothing beats Diana and Julie's horror in the treatment of Hansen's disease. Honestly, we really did not need a leper spaceship. Oh, and Reilly might have annoyed Anthony in his sleeping through his behind-the-scenes section. STEVE HATCHER reveals more of his eclectic television playlist.First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on October 19th 2025.This week we welcome back STEVE HATCHER once again to continue our series of conversations about some of his eclectic television viewing choices.Steve has a life long love of television and – like many archive TV fans - is always adding to the mix that makes up his own personal TV schedule based around some of the archive channels, things he finds on the Tube that is You, and his own extensive DVD and Blu-Ray collection which means that he is constantly exploring the fascinating and more obscure corners of the television archives and finding new and often forgotten series to talk to us about. This week he will mostly be introducing us to several sitcoms, some of which you will have heard of, a couple of which you may actually remember watching, but nevertheless all of them are largely forgotten by the viewing public at large. So over the course of this week's show we have a natter that includes the GEOFFREY PALMER-led Channel Four series FAIRLY SECRET ARMY, a kind of not really spinoff from THE FALL AND RISE OF REGINALD PERRIN written by David Nobbs; we'll blow the dust of the once hugely popular ITV hit that was THE ARTHUR HAYNES SHOW, and we'll also take a peek at the BBC 2 delight that was HOW DO YOU WANT ME? which featured DYLAN MORAN alongside FRANK FINLAY and two actors who left us far too soon, CHARLOTTE COLEMAN and EMMA CHAMBERS.And just to keep things balanced towards the broader and perhaps more dramatic regions of the television spectrum, we will also touch upon the 1960s BBC drama anthology series DETECTIVE which ran for three series across five years in the latter part of the 1960s and, across its 45 episodes, introduced a whole range of detectives to the viewing audience, many of which were neither SHERLOCK HOLMES nor MAIGRET, despite the programmes often being introduced on screen by RUPERT DAVIES himself.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Copies of the Season 13 blu-ray are arriving now, after being dispatched by HMV in the UK! And to tease you with more of the new extras, we speak to Chris Chapman about the documentaries, photo galleries with Derek Handley, and commentaries, documentaries and Behind the Sofa with all-round good guy Toby Hadoke. Plus, Kenny and Dave discuss the Target novelisation covers for various editions of the Season 13 stories!
We kick off the Black Guardian trilogy with a new companion joining the TARDIS, the return of the Brigadier, and the return of the Black Guardian (on whose head they've inexplicably put a dead bird!), as we discuss Mawdryn Undead (or, to translate it from the Welsh “Dead Man Undead”!) Join us as we make immediate judgements on Turlough, discuss how the story plays with time in a way that pre-dates Moffat by 20-odd years, question the Black Guardian's sartorial choices, ponder why the Brigadier remembers Harry Sullivan but not Liz, Jo, or Sarah Jane, while Julie asks “why is the moustache gone?”. Cannabis comic and activist Ngaio Bealum is back on the podcast for our HALLOWEED episode, and he's bringing a pair of horror comedies. First, we've got maybe the ultimate Halloween movie with ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948). This one has all the monsters--Lon Chaney, Jr. as THE WOLF MAN, Bela Lugosi is DRACULA, and Glenn Strange is the FRANKENSTEIN MONSTER. Plus you've got some mad scientist action, and they're all after Lou Costello's brain because he's even dumber than the monster. Thrill to Dracula hurling potted plants at the Wolf Man! There's also a Nor Cal/So Cal schism over Abbott and Costello that was a little unexpected. Find out how that one plays out as Bob and Ngaio tag team the Franklins here. Then, don't call it a comeback as VINCENT PRICE returns to kill a bunch of doctors in inventive and Biblical ways in THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES (1971), a piece of art deco madness from the strange mind of director Robert Fuest (THE DEVIL'S RAIN). Bob's usual smooth intro melted down here as Ngaio accused him of spoiling the movie by basically rehashing the description copy from the back of the Bluray. You'll want to hear the conflict. And FIND OUT HOW YOU can WIN THE DR. PHIBES Bluray(!), and read that spoilery copy for yourself by listening to this episode! And if you email us at oldmoviesforyoungstoners@gmail.com and tell Bob how this episode is a STEALTH VINCENT PRICE DOUBLE FEATURE, you'll jump ahead in line! We will reward the people who actually read all this crap. Shhhh. And the episode kicks off with a usual amount of discussion or SUPERMAN vs. POPEYE + seeing the Tim Burton BATMAN at the Grand Lake in Oakland. Ngaio is old school when it comes to DC Comics canon BTW. Follow Ngaio at Ngaio420 on Instagram and other socials: https://www.instagram.com/ngaio420/ Hosts: Philena Franklin, Bob Calhoun, and Greg Franklin. Cory Sklar is on assignment. We take a break from all the news to look at an album that sometimes gets overlooked in the Beatles canon: 1965's Help! It's not just a movie, but a great listening experience as an album (the UK version, in particular). James Cameron-Wilson wished he liked #6, the fantasy A Big, Bold, Beautiful Journey with Colin Farrell & Margot Robbie. It looks good but there's no chemistry, just whimsy. He does recommend #8, the thought-provoking NT Live production Inter Alia. He found Wrack & Ruin, a box set of post-war DEFA films on Blu-Ray aimed at de-Nazifying Germany, particularly Somewhere in Berlin, an eye-opening education and a must for film lovers. And out next week on Apple TV+ is The Lost Bus, a true story with Matthew McConaughey a bus driver trying to save schoolchildren from a wildfire. Deftly directed by Paul Greengrass it's a prime example of the new panic attack genre. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Directors Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Prisoners) and Stefano Sollima (Suburra, A.C.A.B.) adapt another gritty vision by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, Tulsa King). How did they take a continually depressing real-life themes and elevate them into a badass blockbuster fueled with social commentary & memorable villains? Which character flipping from anti-hero into villain (and vice-versa) was unexpected in the sequel? What trivia from the Blu-Rays was rather fascinating? And more gritty adrenaline fueled war espionage to divulge!
It's Kinda 2: Electric Boogaloo – or as it's better known to most people… Snakedance! Beyond the return of the Mara, we get the return of good ol' themes of colonialism, complete with a spoiled brat heir, a difficult and ignorant historian, and a snake-oil salesman who gets his comeuppance (ironically, at the hands of snake-being!)! Join us as we discuss what the Mara are (and how RTD has corrupted that idea), to what extent Lon was actually possessed by the Mara, how Elisabeth Sladen's husband (Brian Miller) bears a striking resemblance to Jared Harris, how J.K. Rowling may have taken some inspiration from this story, and the absolute simplicity of the plot. Additionally, Anthony challenges Reilly to cosplay as Lon. We're kicking-off Season 20 with Arc of Infinity! This story features Time Lords doing what Time Lords do best, the return of Omega and introduction of his mutant turkey/pterodactyl thing, and some traipsing around Amsterdam. It sounds like it should be quite good. But will the Watchers think that it's the sort of bang that the season should start with – one that caused by anti-matter and matter colliding? Join us as we discuss our total disdain for the planet Gallifrey and Time Lord society, our love of Action Hero Nyssa, the brain slugs from Futurama, how the Castellan and Commander Maxil seem to be aware of the narrative structure of a Doctor Who story, and how President Borusa is apparently very susceptible to phishing.
