Keep your germs away from Scott's newborn, Rafe's ancient dog and everybody else who has things to do besides spending the weekend fighting whatever plague you dragged into the studio.This daily comedy show then recaps the crew's broadcast from Scott Air Force Base, where Hockley's Bakery brought coffee cake and former NFL player Carey Davis apparently turned eating it into performance art. Do you physically intervene and risk becoming another victim? Record evidence? Call police? The crew wrestles with where being a Good Samaritan ends and unnecessarily putting yourself in danger begins.That debate rolls right into MetroLink's new turnstiles, where riders have reported people “piggybacking” through behind paying passengers. Officials say not to engage, but Rafe and Lern quickly develop a significantly less official solution involving The Crow, a trench coat and vigilante MetroLink justice. Somewhere, Batman's attorneys are already preparing a cease-and-desist.Then this daily comedy show gets into a much more dangerous trend: Galaxy Gas and recreational nitrous oxide use. After discussing a case involving a young man who reportedly lost his ability to walk after prolonged use, the crew runs through other health trends doctors are concerned about, including vaping, ketamine, energy drinks, e-bikes and influencer medicine. Turns out getting your medical advice from somebody dancing next to floating captions may have some drawbacks.Relationship court is also in session after a woman writes in about her boyfriend refusing to actually say “I love you” after a year together. Instead, she gets “you too,” “love you, mean it” and — brace yourself — “wuv you.” Rizz would like him removed from society immediately. The crew debates when couples should finally say the L-word, whether love at first sight exists and how much baby talk one adult relationship can survive.And because parenting wasn't already complicated enough, apparently “park crawls” are becoming a birthday-party thing, with kids hitting multiple playgrounds and even riding party buses between stops. That leads to the eternal argument over whether adults without children are allowed to give parenting advice. Lern says absolutely. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Daniel Aaron discuss the inadequate oversight of food additives by the FDA, particularly the agency's GRAS or "Generally Recognized as Safe" process, which allows unsafe additives to reach the market without proper scrutiny. Dr. Aaron highlights industry conflicts of interest, the lack of reporting requirements, the need for stricter regulation to protect public health, and discusses what is needed for the FDA to be better able to make impactful changes.     Key Takeaways: The majority of food additives in the US are not vetted by the FDA. Since 1958, food additives have been presumed safe until proven otherwise.  The Clean Eating movement in the US is indicative of the skepticism of the American food supply.  While the FDA used to maintain a list of GRAS substances, today, reporting to the FDA is not required.  Europe uses a more precautionary approach to food additives. The EFSA must approve all chemical substances prior to their use in foods.  Food additives are known to cause synergistic harm. However, the FDA poorly regulates single additives, so it is not surprising that its consideration of interacting chemicals is insufficient.   "The FDA is the most accountable to corporate power. The largest impediment, in my view, to food regulation is funding. FDA's Food Center has been underfunded for decades. Kathryn Rubino sits down with Amos Guiora, law professor at the University of Utah's S.J. Quinney College of Law and director of the Bystander Initiative, to talk about his forthcoming book, Enablers: Normalizing the Unimaginable. The conversation traces his path from an IDF JAG Corps officer to a legal scholar building a case for criminalizing the people who knew about harm, had the power to stop it, and chose not to. KEY TAKEAWAYS An enabler is legally distinct from a perpetrator. Guiora defines the enabler as someone who knows of harm because of their position or authority, is able to prevent it, and instead protects the institution or the leader over the vulnerable person. Bystander law has a gap. Legal systems have criminalized the bystander who witnesses harm and does nothing, but not the enabler who actively protects the person or institution causing it. Guiora's work is aimed at closing that gap. Institutions rarely pay a real price. When a university settles for hundreds of millions of dollars, insurance covers it, not individuals. Guiora argues that until specific people face criminal accountability, mandatory-reporter training and bystander videos stay performative. The pattern repeats across very different settings. From Larry Nassar at Michigan State to the Catholic Church to Jeffrey Epstein's circle to Israel's handling of the October 7th hostages, Guiora sees the same structure: a perpetrator who could only act because an ecosystem of enablers let him. His new book names names. Drawing on off-the-record access to former senior Israeli officials, Guiora documents specific people in Netanyahu's inner circle and the political calculations behind their decisions not to push for a hostage deal. When we intervene, we don't just reduce trauma for the person being harassed., we also start to chip away at a culture that allows this harassment to be so prevalent. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency!      Building Resiliency and celebrating Bystander Awareness Month: These five ‘D' strategies may be just the thing to help you intervene. Distract – interrupt the incident. You could engage directly with the person who is being targeted. Start a conversation or ask a question about something completely unrelated. Or you may accidentally-on-purpose spill your coffee. Direct - You may want to directly respond to harassment by naming what is happening or confronting the harasser. This may be risky: the harasser may redirect their abuse towards you and may escalate the situation, so use this with caution. Delegate – Look for assistance from someone in authority, like a supervisor, bus driver, security guard or front desk attendant. Document – It may be helpful to record the incident, but keep safety in mind at all times. And never post the video without the person that was targeted's permission. Delay – Even if you can't act in the moment, you can make a difference for the person who has been harassed by checking in on them after the fact. Ask them if there's any way you can support them. it is important that we show up for one another as active bystanders. This lets the person who is being targeted know that they are not alone. What to Listen for:  Small early experiences compound. How children are raised - with warmth, responsiveness, and consistent values - can shape whether they grow toward caring or toward hostility, on both an individual and societal level. Responsibility, not just empathy, drives action. Empathy alone doesn't reliably produce helping behavior - a felt sense of responsibility for someone else's welfare, paired with a belief that you can actually make a difference, is what moves people to act. Bystanders can be trained to become "active bystanders." This isn't just theory - it's the basis of real police and school training programs designed to help people intervene safely when they see harm happening. "Blind patriotism" vs. "constructive patriotism" is a useful lens for understanding how loyalty to a group, a leader, or a country can either enable harm or serve as a check against it. Violence - and caring - escalate gradually. Small unaddressed moments of hostility or dehumanization tend to compound over time, in families, institutions, and nations alike. Personal history and professional work aren't separate. The guest's own childhood experience of hiding from persecution, and the people who risked their lives to protect his family, directly shaped decades of research into what makes rescuers different from bystanders.  WORT 89.9FM Madison · Voices from the Corey Ruiz Memorial On July 22, 2026, a yet-to-be-identified Madison police officer shot 38-year old Corey Ruiz three times in the head, killing Ruiz on the spot.  Bystander video appears to show that Ruiz had already been subdued by three other officers when one officer fired his gun.  The incident occurred at the intersection of Madison's Williamson and Baldwin Streets, in the Williamson-Marquette neighborhood.  That neighborhood has seen more than its share of police violence, with Madison Police officer Stephen Heimsness shooting Paulie Heenan dead in 2012, officer Matt Kenny shooting Tony Robinson dead in 2015 and officer Hector Rivera shooting Michael Schumacher dead in 2016.  In the aftermath of the Ruiz shooting, friends, neighbors and activists have erected a Corey Ruiz memorial at the intersection where Ruiz died.  Williamson and Baldwin Streets remain barricaded, and an ad hoc village has sprung up at the site.  Tents provide food, shelter, mental health services, clothing swaps – even a beautician for neighborhood residents, many of whom are homeless.  When Monday Buzz host Brian Standing visited the Memorial on Sunday, August 2nd, many people were reluctant to speak to the media, citing poor experiences with coverage in the past.  Here's a sample of some of the folks who were willing to talk about their experience. In the early hours of March 13, 1964, twenty-eight-year-old Kitty Genovese returned home from work and parked her car in a lot near her Queens apartment, completely unaware that someone was following her. As she approached the door to her apartment building, Kitty's stalker ran up behind her and stabbed her in the back twice before being scared off by a neighbor who yelled from his window. Wounded, Kitty managed to get to the back of the building, but her attacker soon returned and brutally assaulted her. By the time an ambulance arrived an hour later, it was too late; Kitty Genovese died before she reached the hospital.Kitty's murder and the arrest of her killer, Winston Moseley, were quickly overshadowed by what were believed to be the facts of the attack, primarily the widely held belief that at least thirty-eight neighbors had seen the assault or heard Kitty's cries for help and did nothing.
