Parker Bio: Geoff Parker is a professor of engineering at the Thayer School at Dartmouth College and the faculty director at the Irving Institute for Energy and Society. He was awarded the Thinkers50 digital thinking award for his work on two-sided markets and the inverted firm. He is the co-author of the influential book Platform Revolution. He received his doctorate from MIT, where he was a doctoral student alongside Marshall Van Alstyne. Summary: In this episode, Geoff, a leading expert in platform research and co-author of Platform Revolution, discusses the origins of his work on platforms, the evolution of platform business models, and the ongoing relevance of platform thinking in today's dynamic technological and regulatory landscape. The conversation traces the journey from early observations of free online services and the formalization of two-sided markets to the strategic implications of platforms and their impact across various industries, including B2B and energy. Geoff reflects on the initial skepticism surrounding platform theory, the significant effect of Platform Revolution, and his current work exploring platform dynamics in specific sectors. The discussion also touches upon the challenges faced by established firms in transitioning to platform models and the influence of emerging technologies and regulations on the platform ecosystem. Key Discussion Points The genesis of platform research: Stemming from observations of ad-sponsored networks and the emergence of free online services during the dot-com boom, leading to the formal study of two-sided markets and network effects. Early challenges in platform theory: The initial uphill battle to get foundational work on platforms published. The evolution of platform thinking: How the understanding of platforms has been shaped by events like the dot-com bust and the rise of tech giants. Strategic implications: The development of concepts like platform envelopment and the broader strategic considerations for businesses adopting platform models. The impact of regulation and new technologies: The influence of regulations like GDPR and CCPA, the increasing power of platforms, and the emergence of AI and blockchain on platform strategies. Challenges and opportunities in B2B platforms: The complexities of network effects, sales cycles, core transactions, and integration challenges in B2B contexts. Is hunting journal articles making us miss the boat of big ideas?

Is the journal publishing process and the “game” around journal publishing forcing us to give up on big ideas and instead work on small ideas about trivial matters? We are not so sure. We think that science needs many different types of academics, and they have all sorts of different ideas, big and small, and we need outlets for expressing every single one of them. But outlets, like ideas, are not all equal. Journals are an incremental genre leaning toward rigor and thus risk type-2 errors. Book are an expansive genre learning towards big ideas – and thus risk type-1 errors. So the question is rather what type of scholar you are and whether you can handle the very different processes and mechanisms – those associated with big ideas that take a long time to develop, versus the production of smaller ideas and insights that incrementally push our knowledge forward. In this powerful and historically rich podcast episode, we dive deep into the untold stories of Hyderabad's past, featuring the iconic Pasham Yadagiri Sir. Known for his extensive knowledge of the region's history and his fearless critiques of modern society, Yadagiri Sir sheds light on many hidden aspects of Hyderabad, the Nizams, and their rule. We begin by revisiting the famous “Bandi Venaka Bandi” song, which leads us into a detailed discussion about Hyderabad's Nizam era, particularly what transpired on September 17th. This was a turning point for many, especially for farmers and certain communities like the Brahmins and Padmashalis, who faced brutal killings. Yadagiri Sir unpacks the complexities of the British taxation system and how the Nizams acted as allies to the British crown. He touches on significant events such as the hanging of 1,000 Gonds in Nirmal and emphasizes the need for a 'mosaic vision' to truly understand the British rule in India. We explore how the Nizams first came to power in India and whether there is any confusion between the Nizam army and the notorious Razakars. Yadagiri Sir breaks down the difference between the regular and irregular armies, drawing parallels to contemporary cases like Disha and Nayeem, showing the long-lasting impact of these historical systems on today's society. We discuss infamous cases such as Belle Lalitha's death and the mysterious ways in which these deaths are often brushed under the rug. Yadagiri Sir raises concerns over critical thought in journalism and why cases like Nayeem's death were never properly filed. The conversation also takes a turn towards Operation Polo, the military action that led to Hyderabad's annexation into India. Yadagiri Sir speaks passionately about the massacre that occurred afterward, often referred to as the second Jallianwala Bagh, and the forgotten figures like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Chaakali Ellamma who played crucial roles during this period. He shares insights into the once-wealthy regions of Hyderabad, such as Vagul and Adilabad, which were richer than Kashmir. Yadagiri Sir also discusses how the oppressive 'Dhora' taxation system and violent events like the Puligiri massacre shaped Telangana's fight for survival. The podcast delves into intriguing questions about Belle Lalitha's death and its connection to Nayeem, exploring the larger political context that led to her tragic end. From the closure of all CBM factories, including Asia's largest sugar factory, to the Charminar cigarette industry, Yadagiri Sir points out how these economic collapses affected common people. He argues that certain political parties, like TRS, TDP, and BJP, have ultimately put an end to the vision of Graama Swaraj, leaving us in a cryptocracy rather than a democracy. Moving on to caste dynamics, Yadagiri Sir explains the historical origin of caste titles like Reddy and Choudary, clarifying that these were originally professions rather than social hierarchies. In the case of Reddys, they were land contractors, while Choudary referred to tax collectors. With his trademark candor, Yadagiri Sir also delves into human evolution and how the rise of industrial economies disrupted natural societal progress. With the rise of social media, Yadagiri Sir ponders whether YouTube could become the next mainstream platform for journalism. Citing the example of Dhruv Rathee, who has reportedly influenced up to 20% of voters, he discusses how mobile phones have become the new 'AK47s' in the hands of the people, reshaping political discourse and the flow of information. Finally, Yadagiri Sir shares his thoughts on the Emergency of June 25th, 1975, revealing the harsh conditions of the time, including mass sterilization and the draconian actions of Sanjay Gandhi. In a thought-provoking discussion, he touches on the long-term changes to India's Constitution and the rise of systems like HYDRA that continue to influence the nation today.

The challenge we face: Entrepreneurs often don’t fit the paradigms we use to assess the strength of a fundraising prospect. Their capacity to give doesn’t increase in a linear fashion like other professions, their time constraints around becoming involved are often the inverse of other donors, and the most tax advantageous way to make their gifts is often to give before they actually have experienced the large liquidity events around selling a company or going public. That said, entrepreneurs give 50% more than other professionals making the same income and they often make transformational gifts to organizations once they have the means. They also bring a perspective and approach to providing advice to organizations that is unique to their line of work.   Dee Dee Mendoza discusses how some organizations have approached engaged entrepreneurs in their pre-exit philanthropy stage through the use of founders’ pledges, recognition society engagement, and providing value to entrepreneurs that is needed at each phase of their company’s lifecycle. If your organization wants to provide for its long-term health and have a competitive advantage in your sector, this episode will be an important piece of information in building your entrepreneurial approaches.   In this episode we’ll discuss: Challenges around engaging entrepreneurs in traditional fundraising paths. The benefits organizations can offer to entrepreneurs during their company’s early phases. How tax implications affect entrepreneurs and their giving. What a Founders’ Pledge Society looks like. What people get wrong in engaging entrepreneurs. How to engage entrepreneurs while their wealth only exists on paper. How to book founders’ pledge gifts for your record keeping. Places you can find more research on entrepreneurs and philanthropy. Why it’s fun to work with entrepreneurs. How to get on the calendar of entrepreneurs in your portfolio or database. How to learn more from Dee Dee and stay up to date with the latest in this field.   How you can make your voice heard!   There will be two discussions in the Philanthropy Podcast Facebook group this week. The questions we’re asking are: Who are the entrepreneurs (and/or their companies) who have made a significant impact on your organization or just were great fun to work with? What’s the story behind your collaboration? Does your organization have any formal program for entrepreneurs? Take our poll and leave any details you’d like to share or questions you’d like to ask in the comments.   You can join our Philanthropy Podcast Facebook Group to share ideas, get advice, and simply enjoy the company of other listeners.   Learn more about this episode’s guest, Dee Dee Mendoza: Dee Dee Mendoza is managing director of West Coast Advancement for Dartmouth College, where she works largely with alumni in startups and venture capital. Her background in major gifts goes back more than 15 years, primarily in Higher Education. She has led efforts to launch Higher Ed's two most prominent pre-exit philanthropy platforms: the Dartmouth Founders Project, and the award-winning Berkeley Founders Pledge, the first of a new wave of these programs that incorporates the unique model she developed. Her teams' work has been featured in Currents magazine and the Chronicle of Philanthropy. The ISDA Secure Transportation and Executive Protection News Podcast for Monday, October 15th, 2018 ========================= In Vehicle News From Auto Blog Ford tests technology that could render traffic lights obsolete Could traffic lights, the scourge of many a hurried driver, one day be a thing of the past? That's the thinking behind a trial Ford has been demonstrating as part of a government-funded program in southern England. It's based on vehicle-to-vehicle technology (V2V) and the concept of how pedestrians navigate through busy crowds without colliding with one another or coming to a full stop.   https://www.autoblog.com/2018/10/14/ford-v2v-technology-eliminate-traffic-lights/ ======================  In Security News From RT Hate preacher Choudary: Taxpayers to fund £2 million-a-year bill to secure his protection Anjem Choudary, the notorious Islamic State-supporting hate preacher, will require £2m a year of British taxpayers money to secure his protection and monitor his movements when he becomes eligible for release from prison on Wednesday. The paper reports that there will be 25 separate conditions to Choudary’s parole. https://www.rt.com/uk/441278-choudary-prison-release-cost/ ====================== In Cyber Security News From HelpNet Security Hackers steal Pentagon personnel’s PI and credit card data The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed on Friday that personal information and credit card data of some 30,000 U.S. military and civilian personnel have been compromised in a breach affecting a DoD’s third-party contractor. Apparently, no classified information was accessed by the attackers. Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Joseph Buccino confirmed that they still don’t know the extent of the compromise and who the attackers are. But, he pointed out that “this was a breach of a single commercial vendor that provided service to a very small percentage of the total population” of DoD personnel. https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2018/10/15/pentagon-data-breach/ ======================  In Business of Executive Protection News From Strategic Marketing Solutions Social Media is Not New “Social media” is not new.  The act of communicating and interacting socially has been around for thousands of years – even before we were walking upright (think the artwork on cave walls).  What is unique with the social media in the 21st century is the immediacy of the shared content and the ability to reach thousands of people at once. This is due to in some part to the simple easy to use technology for sharing the information.    Today’s social media has changed the brand/consumer relationship.  There has been a paradigm shift from the brand pushing the content through traditional media – TV ads, billboards, newspapers, etc. I can remember not too long ago – maybe 10 or so, if a company ticked you off, let’s say – Delta Airlines – your typical mode of communication would be to write a letter complaining of your experience. Months would go by, and finally, you would get a generic form letter back from Delta apologizing about the poor experience.  Now with social networks like Facebook and Twitter, the consumer can communicate directly with the brand and – the big key – with the expectation of an immediate response. Consumers expect brands to be listening through social media networks. Brands have to work harder at capturing consumer’s attention and engaging with their customers.   https://larrysnow.me/social-media-is-not-new/ ==================== Links to all news stories mentioned in this podcast are available at the archive website securitydrivernews.libsyn.com. "A British jihadi who slipped off to Syria under UK authorities’ noses last fall has penned a pocket manual called “A Brief Guide to the Islamic State [2015]” — assuring would-be jihadis they’ll have all the comforts of home and featuring artwork of an ISIS invasion of Israel on the cover.  Siddhartha Dhar, who’s close to radical cleric Anjem Choudary and marched in his pro-Sharia events, was arrested in Britain in September on suspicion of encouraging terrorism. He jumped bail and fled to the Islamic State with his pregnant wife, who later gave birth to a boy.  He now goes by the name Abu Rumaysah al-Britani, and a couple of months ago penned an essay defending the right of fellow Briton Mohammed “Jihadi John” Emwazi to behead people. “Take the gloves off, leave the political correctness aside and be totally honest with ourselves. Yes, violence can be justified – bombs, bullets, knives, air strikes etc. are needed for the right enemy and we should not be made to feel ashamed about it,” he wrote then, adding the “identity of Jihadi John is largely irrelevant; he is after all just another soldier following orders.” Rumaysah and Choudary were arrested Sept. 25 along with seven others. He was released, didn’t comply with the order to turn over his passport and left for Syria. His past media appearances to promote radical Islam have included BBC and VICE News, and he told Channel 4 weeks before his UK escape that he’d be happy to renounce his British citizenship to live in the Islamic State.  “I hope that one day Britain gets to live under the Shariah as well,” he also told the network."
