We have a three-time returning guest on the podcast today, Sangeet Paul Choudary - certainly one of the most influential minds in the world of modern business. Sangeet, an advisor and best-selling author, known for his work on platform economics and network effects, joins us to take us through the next era of competition in business: Sandwich Economics. He speaks on the principles of the new phenomenon and shares insights into how organizations are now increasingly  "sandwiching" markets vigorously consolidating profits and power. As this happens, Sangeet argues, it's not always a driver of quality improvement in services and products. Sangeet's episodes are always packed with insights on the future, and this conversation is no different - in the closing, we even walk through AI agents, AGI, societal and ethical considerations, and much more. Tune in, this is not an episode to miss.  As our close followers and general practitioners of Platform Ecosystems know, Sangeet is not only one of the most distinguished thought leaders, renowned for his pioneering work on platform economics but also someone who can spot the intricacies of the impacts that such phenomena have on society.  He has authored two bestselling books, "Platform Scale" and "Platform Revolution," and comes with over a decade of expertise in advising global firms and governments on crafting effective platform strategies through his organization, “Platformation Labs”. His work has also been featured on leading platforms such as Harvard Business Review, The Economist, and the World Economic Forum, to name a few.   Sangeet always has golden insights, and this episode is packed with them. He takes us through the new term he coined to describe dangerous market dynamics that key players use to “sandwich” value across multiple layers of value chains and grounds them on examples from various industries. He further challenges conventional thinking and brings fresh perspectives on the ongoing dynamism and complexity of the market.  So, if you wish to learn what's really happening in platforms and ecosystems and how markets are evolving…Tune in!   Key Highlights

Wardley Mapping is a method used to help generate a shared understanding of strategic landscapes and their evolution. From all levels – individual businesses, industries, to Nation States and even culture – it can be applied to pretty much anything. And as our adopters know well, Wardley maps are a key feature of platform strategy design. And the person who invented these maps is joining us on the podcast today: Simon Wardley.    Simon Wardley is a former CEO and advisory board member of startups (all now acquired by US Giants) and a fellow of Open Europe. He’s a regular conference speaker and a researcher for the Leading Edge Forum. Simon uses mapping in his research at the Leading Edge Forum, covering areas from Serverless to Nation State competition whilst also advising/teaching clients on mapping, strategy, organisation and leadership.   We’re referring a lot to the “Wardley’s Doctrine” table - which is linked in the notes. Go to our medium publication to find it: https://platformdesigntoolkit.com/podcast-S2E11-Simon-Wardley     You’ll hear about why the Economy should start learning from China, why Tech should go serverless, why Businesses should focus on doctrine, and what Simon means when he says Society should have that “We vs Me” conversation. You’ll probably find that this episode is worth listening to a few times to get the depth and breadth of the conversation!    If you enjoy the show, we’d kindly like to ask you to go to your favorite podcast platform and rate the show. In this episode, we have the pleasure of speaking to Joe Pine, an internationally acclaimed author, speaker, and management advisor.Joe has addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos, the original TED conference in California, and the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He's a Lecturer in Columbia University's Technology Management Program, and has co-founded Strategic Horizons LLP to help businesses conceive and design new ways of adding value to their economic offerings. As a prolific writer, Joe is most famous for his 1999 book The Experience Economy, which was updated in 2011 and re-released in hardcover in 2020 with new ideas on Competing for Customer Time, Attention, and Money.Joe's work on the experience economy has been central to our work on platform design and thinking, and so we wanted to explore with him what has changed - or not changed - in the original ideas of the book. We talk about how experiences cannot be "delivered" but staged, and how it's important to also consider the experiences of the employees contributing to the development of the organization, and of the providers who participate in co-creating the platform, so that they can stage the best experiences. The experience economy is not a fad, but a profound transformation of our economies. That's why, like Joe points out, there is no "recovery" of the economy, without the recovery of experiences that people value. Peeking into the future, we see patterns of continued modularity of experiences, whether physical goods or activities that make up a final experience.Once businesses recognize that they are staging experiences, not delivering services, they can gain much more economic value by leveraging on the time and attention of their guests.Remember that you can find the show notes and transcripts from all our episodes on our Medium publication: https://medium.com/@Boundaryless_/9238ca1f91a5?source=friends_link&sk=ccd59a37a23303ac5283887c5183c14d  To find out more about Joe's work:> LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/joepine/> Twitter: twitter.com/joepine> Website: strategichorizons.com/> B. In this episode, we’re excited to have a legend from the platform thinking space Sangeet Paul Choudary, where we explore his fascinating journey from the micro level to macro when analysing the platform economy.  As Founder of Platformation Labs, and author of two bestselling books Platform Revolution and Platform Scale, Sangeet is best known for his work on platform economics and network effects. He frequently advises the leadership of Fortune 500 firms and has been selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. Sangeet's work on platforms has been selected by Harvard Business Review as one of the top 10 ideas in strategy and has been featured thrice in the HBR Top 10 Must Reads compilations. Sangeet is a frequent keynote speaker at leading global forums including the G20 Summit, the World50 Summit, the United Nations, and the World Economic Forum. Sangeet helps us understand in depth how control and commoditization of supply play out in the current evolution of platforms and how regulators ought to look at it. He also paints an extremely interesting picture of the unbundling of work and what it may mean for the future of work coordination infrastructures, as work gets re-bundled in a post-firm context. Are we going to see teams join up to solve challenges related to the job-to-be-done, rather than taking on larger roles? Will the job-welfare bundle disappear? These are some interesting questions we dig into with Sangeet. Remember that you can find the show notes and transcripts from all our episodes on our  Medium publication: https://medium.com/@Boundaryless_/af69f7d2bcbb?source=friends_link&sk=a1dec04e608e3588c7d687eda09beac9 To find out more about Sangeet’s work:> Blog: https://platformed.info/ > Substack newsletter: http://platforms.substack.com/ > For a limited period, Sangeet is further offering a 45% discount to the Boundaryless community on his Startup and Enterprise courses, found at:https://platform.institute. In this “Influencers” podcast JP Kuehlwein talks with Sangeet Paul Choudary about the unique and exponential business- and brand building opportunities the platform business model offers – but also its limitations.    Web-based platform businesses seem to have grown into becoming dominant players in the most diverse industries like transportation (think Uber), hospitality (Airbnb), social media (Facebook), entertainment and communication (Apple and iTunes) or knowledge management (Google), retail (Amazon) and so forth.  They have become some of the most highly valuable assets in the world – it seems like overnight.  -- No wonder that there is an army of start-ups trying to convert yet more sectors to be organized by the platforms they design.  And no wonder that traditional manufacturers and service providers try to figure out how to counter this development or – increasingly – get ahead of it and become platforms themselves.  Jp and Sangeet will talk about the essential components of platform business and how to harness ‘network effects’.  They will discuss how to predict if a platform will grow to become a desirable brand and financially attractive business long-term.  What drives the success of an Amazon, Uber or Facebook? How can traditional ‘pipeline businesses’  compete?  What are the  vulnerabilities and downsides of this business models when it comes to branding, financials, operations and organization?    JP Kuehlwein is Leader of the Marketing and Communication Institutes at The Conference Board and Principal at Ueber-Brands Consulting, New York. He consults, writes and teaches on the subject of brand elevation applying over 20 years of marketing and management leadership experience in the Consumer Products industry. His clients include CPG blue-chip and platform-based start-ups, alike. Sangeet is a consultant based in Singapore and entrepreneur in residence at the renowned INSEAD Business School as well as a fellow at the Center for Global Enterprise. He has co-authored what has become the ‘bible’ on how platforms work -- entitled “Platform Revolution” in 2017 together with Prof Geoffrey Parker of Dartmouth and Prof Marshall Van Alstyne of Boston College and continues to research what drives success and failure in the platform space. www.platformthinkinglabs.com. To get an invite-only access and a 100% discount code to Sangeet's course on platforms, write to liz@platformthinkinglabs.com with the Subject: Playbook Access.
