Food is as powerful as any medicine, according to a leading cardiologist.   Dr. Columbus Batiste tells his patients to eat the food that their great grandparents would eat. In essence, for health reasons it is critical that we eat food that will decay and break down rather than stand the test of time.   That is why Dr. Batiste is a major proponent of limiting ultra processed foods in the diet. He warns that we don't know fully understand how the additives in those foods are impacting our body.   In This Interview   - Food additives that are destroying our health - Fresh squeezed vs. concentrated orange juice - Ultraprocessed foods and disease - Making convenient foods work for us instead of against us - Heart health effects of chicken vs. beef and pork - Carbs are good, "carbage" is bad - Seed oils   — — SHOW LINKS — — Columbus Batiste Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/healthyheartdoc Selfish Book: https://drbatiste.com/product-category/book Website: https://drbatiste.com — — EVENTS — — HELP Conference Where: Jupiter, FL When: May 16-18, 2025 Who: Dr. Batiste, Dr. Kim Williams, Dr. Scott Stoll, Dr. Milton Mills, Danette Batiste and more! In this episode of the Health Science podcast, Dr. Frank Sabatino talks with a true champion of heart health, Dr. Columbus Batiste. Dr. Batiste's passion for promoting heart health is deeply personal, stemming from the heart-wrenching loss of both his father and father-in-law due to lifestyle-related diseases. Dr. Batiste's father had many healthy practices, but he was also known to disregard the dangers of excess, which led to severe diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. This caused his health to spiral downward until he could no longer walk and ultimately died a painful death. Witnessing his father's suffering and the same fate that befell his father-in-law due to high blood pressure and kidney failure has only strengthened Dr. Batiste's resolve to help others live heart-healthy lives. Dr. Batiste is committed to educating his patients and anyone who will listen about the importance of lifestyle changes in reversing and preventing diseases. He believes that medicine is too focused on disease management and not enough on the root causes of those diseases. As a physician, Dr. Batiste sees his role as a guide, planting seeds of information for his patients and leading with love instead of criticism. One of the exciting aspects of Dr. Batiste's work is in community outreach, particularly in under-resourced areas. The outreach often takes place in barbershops, hair salons, and churches. Dr. Batiste believes that healthcare needs to transition to a model where care is brought to people where they are, rather than expecting people to come to clinics during traditional business hours. He emphasizes that every person is unique, and their approach to treatment should be individualized. Through his experiences, Dr. Batiste offers a fresh perspective on healthcare. He encourages patients to take control of their health through lifestyle changes and advocates for personalized care that meets people where they are. His work in under-resourced communities and his upcoming book highlight the importance of holistic health practices that prioritize the well-being of the whole person. He will provide clinical case studies that demonstrate precisely how he utilizes nutrition both in the inpatient and outpatient setting to optimize patients' overall health and well-being. What is the role of a plant-based nutrition plan in a patient who is critically ill in the cardiac care unit? How can a plant-based nutrition plan improve the condition of the patient on multiple medications? What is a stepwise approach that Dr. Montgomery utilizes in managing patients who are acutely ill with both allopathic medical care and plant-based nutrition? Welcome to the premiere episode of Heart 2 Heart: Conversations to Heal a Broken Heart with Dr. Columbus Batiste. Dr. Columbus Batiste is a board-certified Interventional Cardiologist who has been an active lifestyle and whole food plant-based advocate for over a decade. His dedication to the science of lifestyle has led him to participate in multiple research studies and review articles which have confirmed the benefit of a plant-based diet. To bring the science to his patient's bedside, Dr. Batiste crafted a unique program in which he gave bi-monthly lectures and a monthly cooking class entitled: CATH lab. The CATH lab is a procedural room where Interventional Cardiologists bring patients to provide treatment to open vessels and stop heart attacks while they are occurring. Dr. Batiste re-purposed the Cath lab name into Cooking Alternative To Health (CATH) a series of cooking classes, that provided attendees information on how to maintain flavor and combine foods to restore blood flow and alleviate symptoms with the power of nutrition. Dr. Batiste has additionally explored the science regarding the relationship between mental health and relationships in heart disease. In this inaugural episode Dr Batiste is joined by Dr Allycin Hicks aka “Dr. Ally”. They discuss the power of self-acceptance as a New Year's Resolution. This is the perfect episode to launch a show that promises to change lives. Dr. Ally is a mental health and relationship expert, television personality, and the founder of the DOUX Consulting Group, a media and mental health consultancy agency that also provides celebrity and entertainment coaching and consulting. With a Ph.D. in Clinical Health Psychology, Dr. Ally focuses on how mental health affects physical health, radical self-acceptance, and empowerment through creativity.
