"The more popular you are on social media, the fewer friends you have." In this episode of the Tooth Order Podcast, Dr. Amanda Wilson returns to share insights on helping general dentists with clear aligner therapy and virtual consultations. From her journey in orthodontics to educating dentists on how to handle mild to moderate cases, Dr. Wilson discusses the benefits of clear aligner therapy, the use of digital tools, and the importance of proper education for general practitioners. Tune in to hear her thoughts on case management, overcorrection issues, and how she balances her professional and personal life. Meet Dr. Amanda Wilson, a San Francisco native whose journey in dentistry has taken her from the heart of the Bay Area to the beautiful shores of Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Wilson earned her dental degree from UCSF Dental School and went on to achieve her Master of Dental Science and Orthodontics Certification at the University of Connecticut. With over a decade of clinical experience, she has completed thousands of orthodontic cases, both fixed and removable. Driven by a passion for teaching and mentoring, Dr. Wilson transitioned into corporate dentistry, where she has spent the past few years as a Dental Director and Consultant for both national and international orthodontic companies. Her work focuses on innovative areas such as early treatment, functional appliances, aligners, and tele-dentistry. "Well-behaved women seldom make history." Laurel Thatcher Ulrich Meet Dr. Dr. Amanda Wilson made big waves in Hawaii's orthodontic world, not just in the clinic but also in the law! Back in 2005, she helped push for a bill (Act 121) that temporarily allowed orthodontists and other dental specialists to skip the usual state dental exam and get licensed based on their credentials. This was a big deal because at the time, Hawaii was changing its licensing exam and didn't have a clear process in place. How She Got Involved Dr. Wilson lobbied for and helped shape the bill because she saw a gap in the system—qualified orthodontists couldn't practice in Hawaii due to outdated licensing rules. Act 121 created a temporary shortcut for dental specialists to get licensed if they had the right education and experience. Her Own Battle for Licensure In 2005, Dr. Wilson applied for her own Hawaii dental license using this new law. But the Hawaii Board of Dental Examiners denied her application because they said her graduate training (residency) didn't count as actual "practice" under the law. Even though she had worked independently in California for 10 months, Hawaii required three full years of practice outside of school. Her Fight Against the Board She took the Board to court, arguing: Her residency training was in real-world dentistry and should count. She helped write the law, so it should have included her situation. The Board's decision was unfair and possibly biased against her. The court sided with the Board, saying their interpretation of the law made sense. Why This Matters Even though Dr. Wilson wasn't granted her license, her efforts paved the way for discussions about better licensing options for specialists. This highlighted flaws in Hawaii's system—showing how tricky it is for well-trained orthodontists to get licensed, even when they're fully qualified. While the law was short-lived (it was automatically repealed when the new licensing exam was introduced in late 2005), it gave other specialists a brief opportunity to practice in Hawaii without unnecessary barriers.   In 2016, Dr. Wilson saw a gap in orthodontic coaching services tailored for General Dentists and took the initiative to fill that need. She founded her own orthodontic management and coaching company, StraightSmile Solutions®, to provide guidance and support to her peers. Now living in Honolulu with her family, Dr. Amanda enjoys the vibrant local culture and outdoor adventures. She explains her microbial research by discussing: How Staphylococcus aureus links molecular biology, periodontal disease, and foot ulcers; Why patients with diabetes are immunologically prone to these microbial vulnerabilities; and How she's identifying if the staph in the nose cavity is the same as that in the foot and next steps to find if it travels through the bloodstream or through contact. Dr. Brenda McManus is an Experimental Officer in Microbiology in the School of Dental Science at Trinity College in Dublin. She talks about her microbiology study involving dental health, foot ulcers, and diabetes with a focus on Staphylococci species. They've found bacteria in foot ulcers that “shouldn't be there,” and these same bacteria are present in periodontal disease. She establishes why patients who suffer from diabetes struggle with foot ulcers and periodontal disease, from such reasons as poor circulation or nerve damage from excess glucose.  This means they can't feel an injury to the foot or can't feel pain when a wound is developing. In addition, bacteria in periodontal disease can cause pockets in the gums and swelling and can ultimately lead to tooth loss. It is twice as common and more severe in people who have diabetes. She mentions additional research showing links between periodontal disease and other diseases throughout the body including heart and kidney disease. She describes her current research and says her team is comparing genomic sequences of different staph samples from the mouth, fingers, toes, and more, identifying which species are in each site. She adds that if they identify the same species in all the different sites, they will compare the isolate genomes. If they are the same, that would be very strong evidence that there is a link between these sites. She describes next steps, therapeutic goals, and the importance of awareness of periodontal health and disease prevention. We look at non-traditional ways to make uni life work for you, and how you can use what you've already done to help you really enjoy your uni experience. DENTISTRY After completing work experience with her local dentist in Year 10 and really enjoying it, Jac initially studied Dentistry at La Trobe University in Bendigo. Jac also moved out of home to study and gives us an insight into what it's like to live on campus. PATHOLOGY After taking a break from study and deciding not to return to Dentistry, Jac went to TAFE to study Pathology so that she could work in that area instead of retail or hospitality while she completed her Law degree. She shares her experience with TAFE and working in pathology, and explains why she chose to take this path. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW Jac went back to study and chose to do Science/Law at Monash University. Diabetic Dental Health Might Lead to the Foot: Brenda McManus Explains the Connection

Researcher Brenda McManus is leading a microbiology study to better understand periodontal disease and foot ulcers in patients with diabetes. She explains her microbial research by discussing How Staphylococcus aureus links molecular biology, periodontal disease, and foot ulcers; Why patients with diabetes are immunologically prone to these microbial vulnerabilities; and How she's identifying if the staph in the nose cavity is the same as that in the foot and next steps to find if it travels through the bloodstream or through contact. For more, see her information on the Trinity College website, tcd.ie/research/profiles/?profile=bmcmanu, and find her on Research Gate and LinkedIn. Available on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/2Os0myK

Clinical protocols are strict instructions or steps that must be followed absolutely without any compromise. These steps are based on the best evidence in literature on how to proceed in accomplishing a task or performing a treatment or a diagnosis. It's basically a roadmap for the dentist to follow. Dr. Marwan Abou-Rass is with us today to discuss how large dental practices can increase the quality and productivity of patient care services through the introduction and use of clinical protocols.    Dr. Abou-Rass holds a master’s degree in Dental Science in Prosthodontics, a certificate in Endodontics and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Abou-Rass served as Endodontic Department Chairman and Director of the Advanced Endodontic program at the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry (1971-2000) and Director AEGD program at (2000-2012). He is now USC Professor Emeritus, practicing endodontist and publisher of CEMENAOnline.com.  During the past few years, Dr. Abou-Rass has been focusing on his continuing education courses on the global problem of substandard care in endodontics and the reasons for the decline in the quality of endodontic education and practice.  Because general practitioners in the USA and Canada do about 75 to 80% of endodontic treatments, he believes that the introduction of clinical protocols in endodontics helps in improving the quality, efficiency, and productivity of general dentistry practices. In his educational career, Dr. Abou-Rass developed three clinical protocols in endodontics specifically written for General Practitioners  4R Operational Diagnosis Protocol Composite Post and Core Buildup Protocol Endodontic Treatment Finalization Protocol  Recently he produced two online continuing dental education master class series. The fist is “ Best Practices In Cracked Teeth Management “ An online five parts series totaling 14 hours of detailed information about his philosophies and approaches in endodontics and the relationship with cracked teeth. The second Master class series is “Advanced Diagnostics for Dental Hygiene Practice.” An online six parts series are totaling 6 hours of endodontic knowledge especially developed for Dental Hygienists.   CEMENAOnline.com
