How do we not feel pigeon-holed by a certain technique or style? And trust our own voice? Listen in as we discuss:

097: Dr. Nima Rahmany Discusses How to Become a Cycle Breaker in Your Family

An Interview with Melissa Llarena

Want to finally accept that it is you who may need to be the cycle breaker in your family? It's a tough pill to swallow. Personally, I've gagged a couple of times whilst holding onto this thought – the thought that it's me who needs to ultimately take full ownership for my own happiness and release any need for others to accept or acknowledge my path.  You may also have to contend with certain emotions or clear up some dark clouds, and swallow a similar metaphorical pill. If this rings true, then tune in to today's episode featuring Dr. Nima Rahmany.  You'll uncover how to start your healing journey as a way to uplift your emotional well-being, the types of different attachment traumas you may have never worked through, and how a present-day conversation that could trigger you could actually be coming from a place in the past when you were a child. Consider today's episode your chance to learn more about how you can become the cycle breaker in your family. Dr. Nima Rahmany's Biography Dr. Nima Rahmany, DC, CCWP is both a Chiropractor and an educator, specializing in helping individuals and professionals get to the ROOT CAUSE of their physical and emotional challenges – from being stressed, depressed, and anxious – to living Powerfully Aligned and on Purpose.  After building a successful Chiropractic practice in Maple Ridge, BC, Dr. Nima sold his clinic in June 2016 to pursue his passion for teaching and coaching professionals who are stressed, depressed, and anxious to transform and have their best year ever – in both a private and corporate setting. Dr. Nima has integrated all the mind-body tools in his quest for healing stress-related disorders into one, a simple-to-follow method called “The Overview Method,” which is “the adjustment above atlas” that he teaches one-on-one and in groups all over the world through his engaging and “edutaining” lectures filled with inspired authenticity and “edutainment.” Share this episode with those in your life who may need to be freed from maladaptive family patterns that have robbed them of feeling joy and abundance. Think about those whom you trust and you think could use some help in being sure that future generations don't ever have to deal with any kind of the tough stuff you did. Highlights Curiosity: How can you use this gift we each have to ask ourselves before we react? What other ways can we interpret this situation? Courage: Have compassion towards yourself if you're feeling bad. Dr. Nima mentioned your inner game vs. the things that are capturing your attention outside of you. Once you avoid feeling, the shadow is repressed. Creativity: You need to feel safe as that inner child (when you are triggered) in order for your frontal cortex to work/turn on. Intergenerational trauma cycles: The root cause of what's stopping you in your relationship, your health, and your feelings of scarcity are all unresolved attachment trauma stored in the body. You are called to become the cycle breaker of this intergenerational trauma that we're all holding on to. Healing: During this pandemic, relationships are breaking down and people feel more disconnected, dissociated, fearful, and run by fear. Families are being divided and we need to break that cycle in the body, creating safety, healing relationships, creating intimacy and understanding. Regulation: We heal by creating a new narrative in our bodies. Reading books and doing therapy doesn't necessarily address trauma in your nervous system. There needs to be emotional regulation and connection. Trauma: Trauma comes in different types and forms. There's a mini attachment trauma, which is the response in our bodies. Safety: In our family system, we are taught how to handle adversity and meet uncertainty. And to many of us, it was met with a lot of anxiety and fear that's dumped on to us and this creates this free-flowing anxiety within the body where you feel unsafe. Conflict: In some cases, we identity out of conflict and conflict defines who we are. We have these relationship breakdowns, but we have to address this whole intergenerational conversation for healing to take place. Attachment: When you're in a romantic relationship, there's a breakdown and we have an attachment, which happens after six months to a year. Then you're no longer bound by the presence of that relationship, but a recurrence of your past.  Pattern: Once you get attached to someone, which you don't get in a business relationship, you now aren't cognitively thinking and you're run by your child mind that wasn't seen or heard and that felt rejected and abandoned. And it becomes a pattern. Cycle breaker: This is your journey through becoming a cycle breaker. You've known that there's something off with your family bloodline, but you can't figure it out, and everyone's messed up. And you can see how it spilled over in your life.  Acknowledgement: Our hero's journey is to get to the place where your healing is no longer dependent on anybody else and acknowledge your pain. Accountability: The moment you break free is when you start to take on the R word – which is responsibility. To truly heal, we have to get to the place where we no longer need mom and dad.  Resistance: When you really take it on within a short time, your world around you starts to shift. You break free from people whom you saw as your perpetrators.  Fortitude: Start with a vision. It always begins with a vision. Unfortunately, a large percentage of people don't even have that. They're so dissociated, and they're so in trauma that they've lost the vision. Inner world: Your internal nervous system state impacts your relationship with life itself. So when something breaks down, you realize you have to start to take ownership of this inner world so you get to a place of alignment, safety, and connection with yourself. Priority: Make the breaking of the cycle a priority, otherwise, the outer world takes over. Process: When you get triggered, you have an access point to go inward and repair what just came up in that moment and return back as a functional adult because you took a moment to expand that space between stimulus and response.  Attention: Trauma healing work is an exercise of how to focus attention. If we don't harness this skill, our attention gets taken by something outside of us, rather than intentionally focused by what's within us.  Practice: You will never run out of nervous system activations in your day that are going to bring up younger core wound parts of yourself. The question is how graceful can you respond without suppressing your emotions?  Timeframe: It's a forever process because this is consciousness work. You're never going to be done. You just go to different levels of complexity and refinements.  Vulnerability: We all want emotional maturity, safety, nonreactivity, empathy, and courage, but we can't have them because of the shadows that are untouched. Once we get vulnerable with those shadow parts of ourselves, all of those things start to emerge naturally through us. Trigger: Becoming trigger-proof doesn't mean triggerless. When you're triggered, you get activated in your prefrontal cortex and now you're governed by your amygdala or your child's mind. So you won't remember when you're triggered.  Past wounds: The reason why you're so angry and you want to react has little to do with what's happening right now. But it's a repetition of feeling of a past, unresolved emotional injury, rejection, whatever.  Validation: What's happening is not what's happening now. You can foster the skill of having that reaction, and completely validating your child's mind that just came up by talking to your inner child. Victimization: We love our victim story. A part of us identifies with seeing mom or dad as the villain. It gives us a sense of self when we have an opposition. This is the journey of the ego.  Awareness: If we don't learn to autonomically regulate ourselves, we're going to need to create little sparks of activation. Anger is a good way of doing it. The way to heal it is to learn how to autonomically regulate and learn how to be the active operator of your nervous system through awareness and practice. When just getting started in photography we can quickly find ourselves in situations where we feel over our heads and which can leave us feeling defeated and break down our confidence. Whether your shooting your first paid shoot or simply wish to be more proficient, in this interview I break down 3 elements to building more confidence while youre behind the camera. In This Episode You'll Learn: #1 Prep A wise man once said that failing to prepare is preparing to fail. That couldn't be more true than in photography. If you want to start taking photos with intention you need to know your gear and how it works inside and out. So the prep stage is knowing your gear, how it works, and how it reacts in different lighting sanarios. Take a listen to episode 243 where I break down step by step how to get to know your camera.   #2 Plan If you want to be successful as a photographer you will need to shoot more than just reactionary photos but shoot with intention. Sometimes that means planning out your photos. Before a shoot really break down each element. What lens will you use, what lights will you use, how will your subject pose. Hammer those details out so when you get ready to shoot you won't have to think on the fly, they are already planned out.   #3 Practice You can read every tutorial and watch every video on youtube but if you don't actually put in time behind the camera you won't be retaining much. That's why practice is so important. To be most efficient when practicing, have a clear goal and work on just one aspect of photography. When just getting started I recommend composition. Composition how you compose the frame of your image with the goal of leading your viewer's eyes to the subject of the photo. Composition is something you can practice anywhere and even with just the camera on your phone which is why its such a great place to start.   Resources: How to Get to Know Your Camera Podcast Episode Join The Beginner Photography Podcast Facebook Community Free Lightroom Presets!

I hope you’re having a happy holiday season! This time a year is perfect to reflect on the past year and project ourselves into the future to envision and create what you want to experience. Did you feel like 2020 was a year of ruined plans, a strange waiting game where everything felt out of your control? I know I did…So we can start to move forward, I sat down for this episode with Elena Brower. Elena is a Mama, teacher, artist, poet, bestselling author, and Podcast Host of Practice You, Elena has taught yoga and meditation since 1999. Her first book, Art of Attention, has been translated into seven languages, her Essential Mentorship is beloved for bringing analog creativity to online coursework, and her third book, Being You, will be released in early 2021. With all the work focusing on reflection and contemplation, I thought she would be a great guest to talk about envisioning our new year.If you want to go further in this or you’re wondering how to envision your new year and move forward when all you feel is held back, I’ve planned a 5-day New Year group-challenge. Together we’ll get clear on your intention and your priorities. We’ll look at the area of your life that need the most attention, and set goals to move the needle forward towards what you’ve been longing to experience. We’ll plan step by step how to get there and give you the support you need to stay on track and make it happen. If you want to know more, go to www.erikalanger.com or send me an email at erika.belanger@gmail.com.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM THIS EPISODEPersonal integrity and making promises to ourselves is at the base of our transformation. Everything you are enjoying right now is the result of previous thoughts or actions. That’s very good news because those all things that are changeable. How you handle your circumstances, no matter how horrific they are, how you choose to show up, determines the rest of your day, week, month, year and life. Make one vision for each area of your life. Rate it on a scale of 1-10. Ask yourself how close are you to your ideal? For anything below and 8, look into your life and see what is perpetuating this distance, what is stopping you? what structure is not in place to help you get there? Then, you have to put into place the structures you need to create that vision and dismantle the structures that are keeping you from it.Right your vision in the present tense. Do not mention anything you do not want. Give yourself permission to dream big enough to actually create tangible change in your life.To keep the promises you make to yourself, give yourself a consequence that is cross-purposes, so as it keeps you from doing the behavior you want to stop, and also affects positively another area of your life. It’s a positive way to keep you on track where to need accountability.Reflection and contemplation are ways to learn to trust your intuition and know you have the answers you are seeking.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODECan you tell us a little bit about yourself and your yoga journey? What n your life made you want to become a teacher? Why did you decide to close your yoga studio?Where does the love of art have to start? You have your own story of recovery and I wanted to ask you about your path towards recovery and what helped you in the process? How has yoga supported you in your recovery? How has the Handel method helped you?How do we show up in a state of empowerment to have an agency in our life? How do we envision? How do we act in alignment with what we want and keep the promises we make to ourselves? What’s the place of our past experience? What is the importance of reflection and contemplation? 003: Emotions Are Constructed

Peace at Last!

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2020 32:26

Let's talk about emotions, today. Notice that I normally tend to use the word “emotions,” rather than the word “feelings.” The word “feeling” often tends to be ambiguous. When I used to ask untrained clients a question like “What are you feeling?” they would invariably answer in a sentence that started with, “Well, I feel like …”. It could be things like “I feel like I'm going to die,” “I feel like he's judging me,” “I feel like I'm letting them down,” “I feel like something bad is going to happen,” etc. Those are not what I call “feeling words,” but judgments. The Classical View of Emotions The classical view of emotion, is the concept that we have evolved specific emotion circuits deep within our brains, and that they produce and encode a set of very basic emotions that have the same fingerprint in any human, and perhaps even in other mammals. When specific stimuli occurring in the world, these circuits will get triggered and produce the appropriate change in our body physiology, our neurochemistry, our perceived sensations, and finally in our behavior. Furthermore, that theory claims that the basic set of emotions is so universal that any culture in the world can recognize which emotion someone expresses, just by looking at their face. Below, you'll see the picture of a man in distress. He's looking like he's about to cry. This man is soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, and the picture was taken in 2016, at the European Championship final, when Ronaldo was playing for Portugal's national soccer team. France had just scored the decisive goal against his team. Cristiano Ronaldo Except that in that picture, the goal that Ronaldo had just witnessed was Portugal's first goal against France, and the emotion displayed on his face is one of elation, and his watery eyes want to cry tears of joy. If you saw the picture before reading these words, you were primed to see a man who's upset, and you probably agreed. It's only in context that you could tell for sure what the expression on his face meant. Affect and Interoception Coming back to a definition of the word “emotion,” we consider an emotion starts with an internal sensation, using a sense called . Interoception our sense of the internal state of our body. For instance, if I perceive what I label as “anxiety,” I feel a sort of constriction in the center of my chest. This is an example of interoception. But that doesn't have to be uniquely related to emotions. If I have heartburn, I will also feel a strong feeling in the center of my chest, albeit somewhat different. That, too, is an example of interoception. The main difference between anxiety and heartburn is how I interpret the sensation, based on my context. How I give it an emotional meaning. The concept of “” is your basic sense of feeling. It has two main components: Valence and Arousal. The Valence dimension goes from unpleasant to pleasant. The Arousal dimension goes from agitated to calm. Below is a circular diagram called the “Circumplex Model of Affect.” The feeling words are arranged around a circle, positioned roughly according to their level of Arousal and their level of Valence. Circumplex Model of Affect (Russell, 1980; the  did not place the words in such a neat circle) A positive emotion will be associated with pleasant affect. A negative emotion will be associated with unpleasant affect. Interoception and affect are hardwired in us, but our emotions are not. They are constructed, based on a large number of experiences we have had along our lives. The Predictive Brain According to Lisa Feldman Barrett, the brain's job is to manage our energy budget. In order to manage this budget, the brain makes predictions. We predict what's going to happen next and our brain manages our physiology accordingly. Fine-Grained Emotional Concepts The granularity of detail in how finely you can distinguish one emotion from another is a predictor of greater happiness and success in life. This capacity is called Emotional Intelligence, a term coined by Dan Goleman. Practice You'll find below a handout with a list of feeling words. On the front side are words that correspond to a positive Valence—pleasant affect—and on the other side, words that correspond do a negative Valence. The negative side has a list that's quite a bit longer than the positive side. Our culture has a finer resolution for uncomfortable emotions than it does for pleasant ones. But also our brain has a negative bias. Print out that list and expand your emotional vocabulary. When somebody asks you how you are doing, instead of replying a mundane “Fine!” try on the following feeling words, for size: “I'm feeling giddy, today!” “I'm quite cheerful, lad!” “Feeling mellow…”

How To Make a Great First Impression

When you meet someone for the first time, they instantly form an impression based upon your age, gender, race, height and weight. People will also judge you based on your body language. Do you look someone straight in the eye? Do you cross your arms? Do you stand up straight? Your total impressions are a combination of all these factors. So what does this have to do with 30 seconds to make an impression? Everything! Though you cannot change your age, gender, race, height or weight you can change the way you stand, whether or not you fold your arms or legs. Average Attention Span In business you need to capture the attention of everyone you meet within the first 30 seconds. Why within the first 30 seconds? That is the typical amount of time it takes to ride an elevator from the bottom floor to the top floor of the building. Thus this is where the name elevator speech or pitch came from. Add to this the fact that the average attention span of a human is between 8 to 20 seconds and you soon realize how important this speech is. So what if you take longer to deliver your speech? What could possibly happen? You lose the chance to capture your audience. Once you lose their attention you’re lost the opportunity to sell them your product or service. That is the whole purpose of developing your 30-second elevator speech. Remember you only have one chance to make a great first impression! Don’t risk losing a client because you did not prepare your elevator speech. What is an elevator pitch or speech? An elevator pitch or speech is a short persuasive summary used to define a product, service or organization. When used correctly it will peak the interest of the person you are talking too. As the name indicates the summary is delivered between 25 to 30 seconds. The speech communicates who you are, what you have to offer and what are the benefits.  It can some time to get your pitch right. Be prepared to go through several iterations before getting the finalized pitch. Steps To Creating a 30 Second Elevator Speech 1. Identify the Goal First start by thinking about the objective of your pitch. For instance, do you want to tell potential clients about your organization? Do you have a great new product idea that you want to pitch to your banker? Do you want an engaging pitch to explain what you do for a living? 2.  Explain What You Do Start by explaining what your organization does. Focus on problems that you solved and how this has helped your clients. If possible, add information or statistic that reflects value in what you do. 3.  Add Your Value Proposition Explain why a potential customer should buy a product or service from you. What makes you different from the competition? What value does your product or service provides that is better than or solves a problem better than the competition? 4.  Ask an Open Ended Question The main goal of this section is to leave your potential clients wanting more!!! This step will engage your potential client into the conversation. You need to ask questions that cannot be answered with a yes or no answer. By sparking their interest in your product or service will keep them engaged and lead to a longer conversation. 5.  Now Put It All Together Now put each section of the pitch together. Then read it aloud and time the speech to see how long it takes. It should take between 25 to 30 seconds at the most. If the speech is a little long look for items that can be removed so that you are within the timeframe. Remember that your speech needs to grab and hold the interest of your potential customer. 6.  Practice, Practice and Practice You need to practice the speech/pitch regularly so that it flows smoothly off your tongue. You don’t want the speech to come out like an aggressive sales pitch. Remember to pay attention to your body language while delivering the speech. You want to make sure that you are not saying one thing and your body language is saying another. You don’t want the speech to sound like it was prepared. You need to refine it so that it comes out like it was prepared even though it was. Remember to keep your business cards, and or brochures on you so that you can hand these out potential clients.   Don’t lose a potential client because you were not properly prepared. Also you can develop different elevator speeches for each product or different services that you provide. One of the benefits of an elevator speech can help you focus on exactly what you do and whom you are doing it for. It also helps you clearly market your business. Here are some do’s and don’ts of elevator speeches. DO’s of Elevator Speeches Do make your elevator speech sound natural, effortless and conversational. Do make it from the heart. Do revise your speech refining it and making it yours. Do show your passion for what you do. Enthusiasm is contagious. Do pay attention to your audience and end the speech early if you detect that you have lost your audience. DON’Ts of Elevator Speeches Don’t miss networking opportunities because you have not prepared your elevator speech. Don’t rush through the speech. Remember to talk at a natural pace. Don’t wonder during your speech. Don’t use technical terms. Don’t forget your Value Proposition By developing a naturally flowing, compact elevator speech you will be prepared for any networking, marketing, or general questions asked by potential clients, bankers, suppliers or the general public. You never know where your next sale may come from. It just maybe the next person you meet in an elevator who happens to purchase your next product or service!!!  Now let's get started developing your elevator speech because you never know where the next sale will come from!!!
