A Tribute to Dr. Ruth Westheimer (1928-2024), Who Taught America How to Talk about Sex   Dr. Ruth talked publicly about sex more than anyone else. Ever.   She was my inspiration to do media work. In 1980 I began listening to her radio call-in show “Sexually Speaking.” In 1982 I watched her first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson Show, a footstool under her feet because she was 4-foot 7. She spoke openly and with enthusiasm about sex – including masturbation. In those days, public discussion of sex was shrouded in prudishness.   She often said, “When it comes to sex, the most important 6 inches are the ones between the ears.”   My guest, Dr. Mark Schoen, founder of Sex Smart Films, is both smart and sexy! He has Dr. Ruth clips on Sex Smart Films. And he knew her before she became famous! At NYC's Columbia University, she asked him to put her in one of his sex education films, which were used in sex education classes. His explicit films were always made to educate, not to titillate. Mark declined her request, fearing that her heavy German accented English would not appeal to viewers. Fast forward 19 years when Dr. Mark was producing sex ed films for the Sinclair Institute. They wanted her in one of their sex ed films. When he called Dr. Ruth to ask, she replied, “Mark, call my agent!” By then she was too expensive for the Sinclair budget.   Dr. Mark and I discussed many aspects of her remarkable life.   Her sense of purpose came from her history. Her parents died in the Holocaust. Dr. Ruth observed, “There were 1,500,000 Jewish children killed during World War II. I was spared because I was sent to Switzerland. People like me have an obligation to make a dent in society. I did not know that my eventual contribution to the world would be to talk about orgasms and erections, but I did know I had to do something for others to justify being alive.”  She understood that sex was a portal to living a happier life and that she was motivated by tikkun olam – Hebrew for making the world a better place. Dr. Ruth said, “You can take horrible experiences you will never forget, but you can use the experiences to live a productive life.” And she had fun being Dr. Ruth!  She described herself as being like a German doll: you knock it down and it bounces back. Ahh, resilience!   Dr. Ruth noted the importance of humor in teaching. I heard this first-hand in 1995 when I was part of a faculty which included her for a weekend sex conference in Washington D.C.. I spoke about my expertise: Sex & Aging. Meeting Dr. Ruth was a thrill!  She lectured that “if a professor leaves his students laughing, they will walk away remembering what they have learned.”   Westheimer promoted long-term relationships. Another quote: “I believe that the best sexual relations have to be in a loving relationship – not like in Hollywood, or your first love or the first night of sex, but in an enduring relationship, and realize how grateful we are that we have someone who cares for us.”   Old was not in her vocabulary. One of her 37 books was Dr. Ruth's Sex After 50. She advised that if you are a senior and alone, buy a vibrator!   In her own very old age, she was named New York State's Honorary Ambassador to Loneliness. Her prescription for the lonely was the same as for the sexually frustrated: Be open. You have to feel your emotions. If you bottle the sadness in, the joy gets bottled right along with it.   R.I.P., Dr. Ruth, our beloved sex therapist known for her cheerful and insightful advice that educated millions about sexual health!

Host: Dr. Melanie Carminati, PT, DPT, GTS, NCPT BrooklynPhysicalTherapy.com Guest: Dr. Michael A. Werner, M.D., FACS MazeHealth.com Disclaimer: The medical information in this podcast is for informational purposes only, not individualized medical advice. For personalized care, consult your healthcare provider. About Dr. Michael A. Werner Dr. Michael A. Werner, Founder and Medical Director at Maze Health, is a board-certified urologist who received specialized Fellowship training in male infertility, surgery, and male sexual dysfunction at Boston University Medical Center. His private practice in Midtown Manhattan and Westchester, New York, is limited to two areas of specialization: male infertility and male and female sexual dysfunction. He's a frequent lecturer and author in medical journals and books on these topics. Exploring Men's Health After 70 In this episode, we'll discuss a crucial aspect of men's health after age 70, focusing on sexual health. Our previous podcast episode, "Sex After 70," primarily centered around female sexual health concerns with Dr. Dena Harrison, a gynecologist. However, we received numerous comments asking about men's sexual health and what can be done for men over 70 to maintain a fulfilling sex life. Dr. Werner, could you please share your clinical experience with male patients aged 70 and above? What are some common complaints they come in with in terms of sexual intimacy and sexual function? Dr. Werner explains that as people live longer, sexual issues in older men become more prevalent. The two primary age-related concerns he encounters are erectile dysfunction and difficulties with ejaculation. The discussion delves into the treatment options for these issues, such as penile implants, penile injections, oral medications, and more. Pelvic Pain and its Connection with Erectile Dysfunction The conversation shifts to discussing chronic pelvic pain syndrome in men, which is often not well understood. Dr. Werner elaborates on the different symptoms and their varied manifestations. Dr. Carminati, as a pelvic floor therapist, adds to the discussion by emphasizing the importance of pelvic floor physical therapy and how it can assist in managing pelvic pain and other related issues. Incorporating Radiofrequency Therapy (Winback Tecar): Dr. Carminati shares her experiences with radiofrequency therapy, specifically the Winback Tecar system, which she finds beneficial for treating various pelvic conditions. The therapy is described as a warming sensation, and it explains how it helps facilitate deep tissue work for male pelvic pain patients. Premature Ejaculation and Its Treatment Dr. Werner addresses premature ejaculation, emphasizing that it's not always a psychological issue but can be physical and, in some cases, lifelong. He discusses treatment options, including the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to delay ejaculation and topical numbing agents. Addressing Low Libido The conversation then touches on low libido in older men, often related to declining testosterone levels. Dr. Werner highlights the importance of hormone replacement therapy and discusses how it can significantly improve libido in men. The Impact of Prostate Cancer Treatments on Sexual Function When it comes to patients who have undergone prostate cancer treatments, Dr. Werner explains the common effects on sexual function and discusses potential treatments. He highlights the importance of early intervention to address post-treatment erection issues and emphasizes the effectiveness of penile injections in these cases.

Blythe and Kesley Howard are sisters and founders of The Chemo Queens. The Chemo Queens is dedicated to empowering and supporting those with cancer by providing the tools, resources, and community you need to navigate this journey with grit & glamour. In 2021, at the age of 37 Kesley received a diagnosis of Triple Negative Breast Cancer. On Jan 12th, 2022, after 20 rounds of chemo, Kesley rang the bell to celebrate her last and final treatment. Throughout the nine months of her cancer journey, she bravely shared her story. Kelsey is a trailblazer lighting the way for others. While Kesley's journey with cancer was ending, Blythe's was just beginning. Blythe was diagnosed with stage II Ovarian Cancer in early December 2022. Blythe had a very successful open abdominal surgery and was out of the hospital in two and a half days. She focused on healing while simultaneously working multiple jobs. Blythe is an actress who has been seen on multiple recurring guest star roles, and over 60 national SAG- AFTRA television commercials. She finished treatment and rang the bell on June 27th, 2023. In this episode, we delve into the emotional impact cancer has on us. How our mind and our mental state are key to our healing. How crucial it is to go into this with the best people around us because negative energy affects our healing. We talk about the strength, the superpower that comes from going through cancer, and how life does not end with this diagnosis. That cancer and chemo do not define you. We discuss how important it is to speak up and advocate for ourselves, to no longer dim our light to make others feel comfortable. To keep living and giving ourselves grace. We delve into cold capping and how Blythe was able to save 90 percent of her hair with this treatment. She would sit under a cap filled with 5 pounds of ice on top of her head for six hours straight. Throughout the treatment, she kept thinking there must be a better and more affordable way to do this, which has now become part of the mission of the Chemo Queens. The Chemo Queens are all about uplifting and empowering you. They are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer and its subsequent treatment. Their mission is to ensure that you never face this journey alone and that you have all the resources and support you need to emerge stronger, sexier, and more uplifted. You can find The Chemo Queens at @thechemoqueens.You can find Amy at @amymarcs.You can find the show at @sexafterpodcast.Sex After is produced by @thechrisderosa. Over the past 50 or so years, Marilyn Minter has been on a roving exploration of feminist, sex-positive thinking. In her art-making, she harnesses the power of sexual imagery—a realm long controlled by men—and presents it through the lens of female desire. Among her most acclaimed works are her “Bathers” series, which reimagines classic female bathers; her “Bush” series, originally a Playboy commission; and a group of new portraits, currently on view at the New York gallery LGDR (through June 3), featuring impactful cultural figures she admires, such as Roxane Gay, Gloria Steinem, Lizzo, and Monica Lewinsky. On the episode, Minter talks about the unrealistic societal and body-image standards young women continue to face, the importance of embracing complexity and multiplicity in artwork, and the hope she has in the next generation to fight social injustice.Special thanks to our Season 7 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes: [00:49] Marilyn Minter[04:02] Bettie Page[06:10] Susie Bright[24:31]  “The Joys (and Challenges) of Sex After 70”[27:31] HBO's The Deuce[33:37] Pamela Anderson for Parkett[40:33] LGDR[46:30] Minter's “Coral Ridge Towers” Series[52:19] Linda Yablonsky[53:23] Diane Arbus[55:24] James Harithas[56:35] Sylvia Mangold[56:59] Kenneth Snelson[58:16] Christof Kohlhöfer[01:04:15] Neville Wakefield[01:07:32] Planned Parenthood[01:07:45] ADLAR AR App

Today Debbie talks about a topic that interests us all, no matter our age… sex.Given the focus of the podcast, she decided to go right to a senior sexspert, Joan Price, for a very frank conversation about all things related to, well, senior sex.Joan, who is 79, has legions of followers on her blog, for her books, DVDs and webinars. She was quoted in a New York Times Magazine cover story this year and now gets so many requests for podcast interviews that she mostly turns them down. She agreed to come on [B]OLDER after listening to the recent episode with nonagenarian author Hilma Wolitzer (Season 4, Episode 20) about writing through grief.Joan calls herself an "advocate for ageless sexuality.” The media calls her “the woman leading a sex revolution for seniors” and, her favorite, "a wrinkly sex kitten."Debbie and Joan talk about why senior sex is an embarrassing subject but, more importantly, they talk about how to expand our definition of sex and how to adjust our relationship to body image as we age. They get right into it. No words are off limits so they talk about orgasms and sex toys and more. Joan explains the different types of desire (and why that's important to understand as you get older). After this episode we promise that you'll know what PIV stands for... if you don't already.Bottom line, Joan's message is that yes, sex is different after 60 or 70 or 80… but in some ways, she says, it's better. I never would have guessed that I'd think this about a book on sex, but Peggy Kleinplatz and Dana Ménard's “Magnificent Sex” is a revelatory book.I was intrigued about Peggy, a clinical psychologist, sex therapist and researcher, when I saw her work mentioned in a fascinating New York Times article, “The Joys (and Challenges) of Sex After 70”.That article opened my eyes to the importance of intimacy and sexual relationships beyond the so-called prime years of adolescence and early adulthood, and also to how narrow and exclusionary our cultural views on sex can be. That narrow-mindedness struck me as representative of how our broader conceptions of health and wellness are culturally constructed as well, and defined around a very limited set of human states and experiences: youth, able-bodiedness, heterosexual coupledom, gender identity, neurotypicality, and others. “Magnificent Sex” summarizes years of research around what Peggy and her team refer to as optimal sexual experiences, and in so doing it shows how solutions to common problems in human sexuality lie where we might least expect to find them – not in conventional notions of physical performance, bodily functioning, or attractiveness - but rather in experiences of marginalization and challenge that demand creativity, courage, and vulnerability and which culminate not only in fantastic sex, but in a form of religious, transcendent experience. If that all sounds wild, that's because it is! But by the same token reading Peggy and her team's work and hearing her speak makes it clear that her findings are very real.***Links:Optimal Sexual Experiences Research Team at the University of Ottawa (includes Peggy's bio and publications)Peggy's book: "Magnificent Sex: Lessons from Extraordinary Lovers" (with A. Warning:  This episode on senior sex obviously contains adult material. Today my guest was Joan Price, who is a senior sex guru.  And as you know, sex is an important part of the retirement lifestyle. Joan, who is an “advocate for ageless sexuality”, has written numerous books, and in fact, she has been called the “senior sexpert”.   When I met her online I knew that I just had to have her on the show! We discussed the fact that NO, we don’t have to sit in a separate bathtub holding hands with our partner (think Cialis commercials) and in fact, we don’t even need to have partner at all!  Think about it, if you are a woman, chances are your partner (if you have one) is going to predecease you if you are around the same age since women live longer than men. Senior Sex?  I have so many questions! * What do you think about drugs like Cialis and Viagra? * Should these senior sex drugs be covered by Medicare? * What made you start writing about senior sex in the first place? * How can we spice up our sex lives? * Why do we tend to put our sex lives on hold as we get older? * What do we do if we don’t have a partner (Joan has a lot to say about this subject!) * If you’re shy, what do you do? * How can you talk to your doctor and what should you say? * What do you do with all those adult toys after you review them? We talked about the fact that she writes reviews of sex toys from a senior perspective. I asked her what the difference would be between a non-senior and a senior perspective and she was happy to tell me. * We lose sensitivity as we age, so senior sex toys should be really powerful. * For the same reason, they have to go a long time. We don’t want the battery dying at a critical moment. * An adult toy should be comfortable for arthritic hands (ergonomic). * The controls should be easy for aging eyes to see. * We need to be able to hold on to them with slippery fingers, so they should be easy to hold. * These devices should be made with non-toxic materials. There are no laws governing this like there are for dog toys or baby toys.  (Who knew?) * Aging women may prefer slimmer senior sex toys. Joan has several books including: * Ultimate Guide to Sex After 50: How to Maintain – or Regain! – a Spicy, Satisfying Sex Life; * Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud  * Better Than I Ever Expected: Straight Talk about Sex After Sixty She also offers classes and webinars, and you can find out more information on her websites: www.joanprice.com  or  www.nakedatourage.com Download today's FREEBIE: 33 reasons that sex is good for you (especially at our age) HERE. Special Thanks to: * Angie Strehlow who helps us get great guests that help us with our retirement lifestyle while keeping everything on track * Les Briney who edits the show and makes my guests and me sound terrific * Lesinda Tubalado who helps keep the website up to date * YOU the listener for letting other people know about this show by sharing on social media, and telling your friends about it This post on Retirement Lifestyle first appeared on http://RockYourRetirement.com
