Content warning for discussion of genocide, torture, mutilation, rape, and slavery Hey, Hi, Hello, this is the History Wizard and welcome back for Day 13 of Have a Day w/ The History Wizard. Thank you to everyone who tuned in for Day 12 last week, and especially thank you to everyone who rated and/or reviewed the podcast. I hope you all learned something last week and I hope the same for this week. This week marks the 4th part of our mini series of currently ongoing genocides and humanitarian crises. Episode 2 was on Palestine, Episode 11 was on Congo, episode 12 was on Sudan and today's will be on a very widely denied genocide, especially in left wing political circles. The Uyghur Genocide. But first, let's fortify ourselves with the waters of life and remember that part of our activism needs to always be finding joy in life and getting ourselves a little treat. It's time for the Alchemist's Table. Today's libation is called a Rumsberry Breeze. In your shaker muddle some raspberries with half an ounce of simple syrup. Add two ounces of dark rum. Shake well and double strain over ice. Top with ginger beer and enjoy. The genocide of the Uyghur people and the longer history of ethnic tensions between Han Chinese and the Uyghur peoples has centered around Xinjiang for as long as it's been around. First thing's first. Let's dive a bit into the history of the Uyghur people. The Uyghur are an ethnically Turkic people living, mostly in the Tarim and Dzungarian Basins in East Turkestan (what is sometimes called Uyghurstan) today. Xinjiang, sometimes also called the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, has been under Chinese control since it was conquered from the Dzungar Khanate in around 1759. Now, how long have the Uyghur people been living in the area? Well, that's a matter of some contention and the answer you get will depend on what sources you go with. The history of the Uyghur people, including their ethnic origin, is an issue of contention between Uyghur nationalists and Chinese authorities. Uyghur historians view Uyghurs as the original inhabitants of Xinjiang, with a long history. Uyghur politician and historian Muhammad Amin Bughra wrote in his book A history of East Turkestan, stressing the Turkic aspects of his people, that the Turks have a 9,000-year history, while historian Turgun Almas incorporated discoveries of Tarim mummies to conclude that Uyghurs have over 6,400 years of history. The World Uyghur Congress has claimed a 4,000-year history. However, the official Chinese view, as documented in the white paper History and Development of Xinjiang, asserts that the Uyghurs in Xinjiang formed after the collapse of the Uyghur Khaganate in ninth-century CE Mongolia, from the fusion of many different indigenous peoples of the Tarim Basin and the westward-migrating Old Uyghurs. Regardless of which timeline we go with, the Uyghur people have certainly been living in the region for far longer than the Chinese Empires that have been dominating them for hundreds of years. And, make no mistake, modern day China is still very much imperial. Something that we'll cover in more detail later, as it is very relevant to the current genocide, is that the Uyghur people are, as a general rule, Muslim. The earliest records we have indicate that before this conversion to Islam around the 10th century CE the Old Uyghur people (Old Uyghur is meant to differentiate the Pre-Chinese Uyghur population from the modern one) followed the Tocharian religion. We don't really have any details about what, exactly, that religion entailed, but today most of the Tocharian inscriptions are based on Buddhist monastic texts, which suggests that the Tocharians largely embraced Buddhism. The pre-Buddhist beliefs of the Tocharians are largely unknown, but several Chinese goddesses are similar to the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European sun goddess and the dawn goddess, which implies that the Chinese were influenced by the pre-Buddhist beliefs of the Tocharians when they traveled on trade routes which were located in Tocharian territories.  The history of China's abuses over the peoples they conquered is a long one, but details on the exact situation of the Uyghur people are somewhat few and far between. However two of the most important parts of Uyghur-Chinese history in the region come from the 19th century CE with the Dungan Revolt and the Dzungar genocide. Something we need to note right now is that the modern Uyghur Ethnic group wasn't called the Uyghur before the Soviet Union gave them that name in 1921, although the modern Ughurs are descended from the Old Uyghurs, at the time of the Dungan Revolt and the Dzungar Genocide they were known by the Chinese as Turki or Taranchi. So if you're ever reading sources about these two events, you might not ever see the word Uyghur, despite them being involved in both events. The Dungan Revolt lasted from 1862 until 1877 and saw a roughly 21 million people killed. According to research by modern historians, at least 4 million Hui were in Shaanxi before the revolt, but only 20,000 remained in the province afterwards, with most of the Hui either killed in massacres and reprisals by government and militia forces, or deported out of the province. It has its roots in the ongoing ethnic tensions between the Hui (Muslim) minorities of China and the ethnic Han peoples. It also stemmed from economic conflicts as Han merchants were known to greatly overcharge Hui peoples and there was massive corruption and fiscal instability resulting from the Taiping Rebellion that led to the peoples of Xinjiang being heavily burdened by unfair taxes.  All of these tensions would explode into a riot in 1862 (some sources say over inflated pricing on bamboo stalks). As a result of this there was a massacre of Han people's by the Hui and everything snowballed from there. With the start of the revolt in Gansu and Shaanxi in 1862, rumors spread among the Hui (Dungans) of Xinjiang that the Qing authorities were preparing a wholesale preemptive slaughter of the Hui people in Xinjiang, or in a particular community. Opinions as to the veracity of these rumors vary: while the Tongzhi Emperor described them as "absurd" in his edict of September 25, 1864, Muslim historians generally believe that massacres were indeed planned, if not by the imperial government then by various local authorities. Thus it was the Dungans who usually revolted in most Xinjiang towns, although the local Turkic people—Taranchis, Kyrgyzs, and Kazakhs—would usually quickly join the fray. The revolt would rage for 15 years, with many Muslim people of Xinjiang and China been slaughtered or forced to convert away from Islam. Though these reprisal killings and forced conversions really only took place in areas that were in active revolt. There were many Chinese Muslims in the Qing armies during the pacification of the Revolt and many also received great acclaim and promotions once the war was over.  Although, it needs to be stated that there were some cities that were actively committing genocide, such as the city of Kashgar which carried out a preemptive slaughter of their Hui population in 1864. So, there was a genocide of the Hui people, as genocide is defined as actions taken with intent to destroy in whole or in part a particular national, racial, ethnic or religious group. Hell, the Taranchi Turkic peoples, our modern Uyghurs, originally aided the Hui, but wound up turning against them to join the Qing armies once they learned that the Hui wanted to put Xinjiang under their specific rule. I technically did these events out of order, but I'm not going to fix that. We've got to dip 100 years into the past to find the Dzungar Genocide. This genocide happened at the end of Mongol Rule in Xinjiang and around the time the Qing initially came in. We're going to talk about this very briefly, as we still have all our modern issues to discuss. The main reason we even need to bring up the Dzungar genocide in a podcast episode on the Uyghur Genocide is that the Uyghurs participated in this genocide on the side of the Qing army as part of an uprising against the Dzungar Khanate. The Dzungar Genocide killed between 70 and 80% of their original population of about 600,000. The Qianlong Emperor had this to say when ordering the extermination of the Dzungari people. "Show no mercy at all to these rebels. Only the old and weak should be saved. Our previous military campaigns were too lenient. If we act as before, our troops will withdraw, and further trouble will occur. If a rebel is captured and his followers wish to surrender, he must personally come to the garrison, prostrate himself before the commander, and request surrender. If he only sends someone to request submission, it is undoubtedly a trick. Tell Tsengünjav to massacre these crafty Zunghars. Do not believe what they say." So, Xinjiang was once again under Qing rule and would remain so until the Wuchang Uprising overthrew the Qing Dynasty and established the Republic of China (not to be confused with the modern day Republic of China, which is actually the nation of Taiwan under Chinese imperialist control.  All of this context is to show that relations between the Chinese government and the various Muslim ethnicities within its borders have always been one of Master and Slave. The Chinese government has always treated non-Han peoples as lesser, and the presence of Muslim Chinese peoples was only tolerated for as long as they worked in lock step with Beijing. Once they didn't, they were prime targets for reprisal massacres and forced conversion. We would see this scenario play out again during the time of the Chinese Republic in 1931 with the Kumul Rebellion.  The Kumul Rebellion began because of the actions of Jin Shuren, the governor of Xinjiang from 1928 until 1933. Jin was notoriously intolerant of Turkic peoples and openly antagonized them. Such acts of discrimination included restrictions on travel, increased taxation, seizure of property without due process and frequent executions for suspected espionage or disloyalty. However, the event that would spark the rebellion would be the annexation of the Kumul Khanate, a semi autonomous region in northern Xinjiang. At the end of the Rebellion Jin was dead and the First East Turkestan Republic was established around the city of Kashgar in the far west of Xinjiang. The First East Turkestan Republic would only last for a year before being conquered by a Chinese warlord named Shen Shicai, who had backing and support from the Soviet Union. In 1937, specifically to coincide with Stalin's own Great Purge, Shicai planned and executed the elimination of "traitors", "pan-Turkists", "enemies of the people", "nationalists" and "imperialist spies". His purges swept the entire Uyghur and Hui political elite. The NKVD provided the support during the purges. In the later stages of the purge, Sheng turned against the "Trotskyites", mostly a group of Han Chinese sent to him by Moscow. It's estimated that he killed between 50 and 100,000 people in these purges. Shicai would eventually betray the Soviets to join with the Kuomintang, the Chinese Nationalist Party, which would lead to the Soviets backing the Uyghur people in the Ili Rebellion leading to the creation of the Second East Turkestan Republic, which would eventually get folded into Mao Zedong's People's Republic of China in 1949. From the 1950s to the 1970s China enacted two main policies against the Uyghur people. They instituted mass migrations of Han Chinese people into Xinjiang as well as passing various laws designed to infringe and smother Uyghur ethnic and religious identity. Uyghurs are barred from freely practicing their religion, speaking their language, and expressing other fundamental elements of their identity. Restrictions apply to many aspects of life, including dress, language, diet, and education. The Chinese government closely monitors Uyghur religious institutions. Even ordinary acts such as praying or going to a mosque may be a basis for arrest or detention. While repression of Uyghur cultural beliefs and identity had existed from day 1 on the PRC, it was in 1990 that everything started to go pear shaped. The Barin Uprising took place between the 4th and 10th of April, 1990. Violence began on the evening of 4 April, when a group of 200 to 300 Uyghur men attempted to breach the gates of the local government office in a protest against alleged forced abortions of Uyghur women and Chinese rule in Xinjiang. Following the uprising in an unprecedented move, Chinese authorities arrested 7,900 people, labelled "ethnic splittists" and "counter-revolutionaries", from April to July 1990. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s there were various terrorist attacks committed by Uyghur resistance groups and freedom fighters, leading to further crackdowns and tightening of police control in Xinjiang throughout the years. Until 2001 Beijing spoke about these attacks as isolated incidents and made no broad statements of all Uyghur being terrorists, despite regularly arresting thousands of Uyghur people for no real reason. Many of those arrested Uyghur people wound up in Laogai (reform through labor) camps or in laojiao (re-education through labor) camps scattered throughout China. But, after the 9/11 attacks on the United States the tone shifted and more and more anti-Uyghur rhetoric started to become anti-terrorist rhetoric. This type of shift in language always precedes an uptick in genocidal violence. Now that all Uyghur are being labeled as terrorists, all Uyghur can be arbitrarily arrested and put in camps or even merely killed and no one will really care because it's not ethnic based discrimination. It's an anti terrorism campaign designed to protect the people from violent thugs.  After 2001 Beijing Sided with the U.S. in the new “global war against terrorism,” the Chinese government initiated an active diplomatic and propaganda campaign against “East Turkestan terrorist forces.” This label was henceforth to be applied indiscriminately to any Uighur suspected of separatist activities. There has been no sign of any attempt by the Chinese authorities to distinguish between peaceful political activists, peaceful separatists, and those advocating or using violence. Although, it needs to be said that violence is a perfectly valid political tool when resisting genocide and imperialism. This leads us to China's Strike Hard Campaign Against Violent Terrorism and the creation of their “vocational education and training centers” (both laogai and laojiao allegedly closing down in around 2013, although satellite evidence says that's bullshit).   In early 2014, Chinese authorities in Xinjiang launched the renewed "strike hard" campaign around New Year. It included measures targeting mobile phones, computers, and religious materials belonging to Uyghurs. The government simultaneously announced a "people's war on terror" and local government introduced new restrictions that included the banning of long beards and the wearing of veils in public places. Over the life of the camps it is estimated, by various sources that between a few hundred thousand and 1.8 million people have been arbitrarily detained in these camps and subjected to forced labor as a method of reformation. This is part of a Chinese government policy called hashar and includes many public works projects in Xinjiang. Beyond the simple fact of these slave labor camps, the state also began imposing harsh penalties for violations of birth limits. It also implemented an aggressive campaign of mass sterilization and intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) implantation programs. Chinese government officials justify this by equating high birth rates with religious extremism. Chinese academics have argued that ethnic minority population growth threatens social stability and national identity.  Leaked government documents show that violations of birth limits are the most common reason Uyghur women are placed in a detention camp. Women have testified to being sterilized without their consent while in detention. Other women have testified that they were threatened with detention if they refused sterilization or IUD implantation procedures. So, in summation, since the 1950s at least the Chinese government has been engaging in forcible assimilation practices. Something that the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (a legally non binding resolution passed in 2007) says Indigenous people have a right to not be subjected to. As well as forced sterilization and forced abortions for violating China's family planning laws. And arbitrary detention and forced labor on invented charges of religious extremism and separatist activities. And then also having their children taken away from them and placed into something akin to the residential school system of the US, Canada, and Australia where they are forbidden from even speaking the Uyghur language. Under the UN CPPCG China is guilty of genocide in the form of causing severe bodily or mental harm to the group, imposing measures designed to prevent births within the group, and transferring children of the group to another group. The Uyghur Genocide is one of the more difficult ones to talk about online, especially if you frequent leftist political circles and spaces like I do as anything anti-China is seen often seen as Western propaganda and part of Cold War policies of anticommunism, as if China doesn't have roughly 814 billionaires controlling the majority of their means of production. The wealthiest man in China is Zhong Shanshan. He privately owns a bottled water company and is worth over 60 billion dollars. China isn't a communist country, it's not even socialist. It's just fascist and capitalist. But that's a rant for a different day. The Uyghur Genocide is real and verifiable, although it can be difficult to do so as there is a lot of misinformation and propaganda regarding it on both sides of the discussion. None of that changes the fact of the genocide or of the destruction of Uyghur culture in Xinjiang.  That's it for this week folks. No new reviews, so let's get right into the outro. Genocide is not a word thrown around lightly by the U.S. government, but it uses that term to describe the Chinese government's ongoing assaults on Uyghurs' distinct culture, identity, rights, and freedom in China's far western region of Xinjiang. China's government has long had an uneasy relationship with Uyghurs' distinct Turkic Muslim identity, and has tried in various ways over time to control them, reduce and dilute their population, and make them assimilate. But lately, it's gotten much worse. Within the past decade, about a million Uyghurs – almost one in 10 – were sent to reeducation camps. Under international pressure, the PRC says it closed the camps in 2019, because the "trainees" graduated. But it  transferred many of the Uyghurs in the camps to prison or forced labor, sending some to other provinces as part of a policy meant to reduce the concentration of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.  Those still in Xinjiang are under constant high-tech surveillance, with some forced to let security personnel live in their homes, to better indoctrinate and surveil them.In the midst of all this, a few Uyghur women in exile have proven especially effective at speaking out on their people's plight, and advocating for international action . I have been a fan of Jason Jones ever since he was an executive producer of Bella, still one of my all-time favorite movies. He was also an associate producer of The Stoning of Soraya M, is a pro-life activist, popular podcast host, and tireless human rights worker. His humanitarian efforts have aided millions in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and the Ukraine, as well as pregnancy centers and women's shelters throughout North America. Jason's pro-life journey and work began while he was playing on the high school football team. The day after homecoming, on a Saturday morning, his girlfriend rode her bike over, knocked on the door and came into his room, waking him up with the words, “I'm pregnant.”  In the interview he details the tragic event leading to the forced trimester abortion of the child that put him on a path to rescue and defend innocent and vulnerable people all over the world. These range from the child in the womb to the over one million Uighurs in Chinese concentration camps who are having their organs harvested and forcibly being mass sterilized in Chinese occupied East Turkestan. And the reason for the imprisonment of the Uighurs, the Communist Chinese party (CCP) says, is to prevent domestic terrorism, and root out hate speech. That means rooting out those with religious beliefs who would seek to build a culture other than the official government position. The CCP is also importing vast numbers of people into this area to dilute the population.  Does any of this sound familiar to those of us living in the United States of America?  The Great Campaign against the Great Reset, Jason's new book, got its name from what Pope John Paul II wrote in Evangelium Vitae, the Gospel of Life:  "What is urgently called for is a general mobilization of consciences and a united ethical effort to activate a great campaign in support of life. All together, we must build a new culture of life" – Pope St. John Paul the Great Jason, as did John Paul II, has a special place in his heart for young people and opens his book with a chapter dedicated to them. “The moral imagination of our young people has been utterly obliterated by porn and by TikTok, YouTube, FB and Instagram reels.  You won't want to miss this important show and please share it with your friends, family and  young people!  “It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo,” says Samwise Gamgee. “Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. That there is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.”Follow the Jason Jones show PodcastThe vulnerable people project.comThe great campaign.org Get the book. Link for Purchase: https://sophiainstitute.com/product/the-great-campaign-against-the-great-reset/Please send donations to support our work to:John Paul II Renewal Center902 S Randall RoadSTE C #296St. Charles, IL. 60174Support the show     More information on LoveEd! An entire ethnic, cultural and religious group is being erased. We hear stories of mass detention, the banning of Ramadan, and the closure and demolition of mosques. We also hear the disturbing reports of women being forced into marriage, forced sterilisation and children being removed from families and reassigned to Chinese couples. But at the same time, people question these accounts. There is a disinformation campaign on social media and diplomatic circles, and many, even some government-paid Islamic scholars, have questioned the extent of the persecution, if not the persecution itself, especially since the Biden administration has adopted it as a cause, as part of their fight against an emerging geopolitical rival. The East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) is an Islamic separatist group composed mostly of Uighurs in Xinjiang, China who wish to create an Islamic state called East Turkestan that would include parts of Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Xinjiang. The ETIM was founded in 1997 by Hasan Mahsoum. The US, beginning in the Trump administration, asserts that TIP and ETIM are two separate entities and have removed what they consider to be ETIM from the Terrorist Exclusion List, citing a lack of activity despite the fact that Uighur fighters are present in Syria and Afghanistan. According to a State Department spokesperson, "ETIM was removed from the list because, for more than a decade, there has been no credible evidence that ETIM continues to exist as the same organization that was conducting terrorist attacks in Syria at the time of their designation." This stance has continued with the Biden administration. In this episode, our host Joey speaks to Jeff Hanrahan, one of our writers, about the group. How do you challenge the might of the Chinese state? For decades, the Uyghur Muslims have fought to preserve their culture, their language and their religion in the face of China's rising power and control.Since 2013, sweeping crackdowns have turned the once-autonomous region which calls itself ‘East Turkestan' into a heavily militarised zone, where high tech surveillance systems were installed and thousands of ordinary people disappeared. What China calls ‘anti-terrorism' measures have been revealed as something much more sinister - concentration camps where more than a million Uyghurs are ‘re-educated' into giving up their beliefs and adopting nationalist ideals, or face severe consequences. Those who managed to escape Xinjiang are now trying to warn the world about what's happening to their families who they can no longer reach. This week on The Big Picture podcast, we sit down with Rahima Mahmut, an Uyghur folk singer in exile and the UK director of the World Uyghur Congress. A Stone Is Most Precious Where it Belongs: A Memoir of Uyghur Exile, Hope, and Survival by Gulchehra Hoja This extraordinary memoir shares an insight into the lives of the Uyghurs, a people and culture being systematically destroyed by China—and a woman who gave up everything to help her people. In February 2018, twenty-four members of Gulchehra Hoja's family disappeared overnight. Her crime – and thus that of her family – was her award-winning investigations on the plight of her people, the Uyghurs, whose existence and culture is being systematically destroyed by the Chinese government. A Stone is Most Precious Where it Belongs is Gulchehra's stunning memoir, taking us into the everyday world of life under Chinese rule in East Turkestan (more formally known as the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China), from her idyllic childhood to its modern nightmare. The grandchild of a renowned musician and the daughter of an esteemed archaeologist, Gulchehra grew up with her people's culture and history running through her veins. She showed her gifts early on as a dancer, actress, and storyteller, putting her on a path to success as a major television star. Slowly though, she began to understand what China was doing to her people, as well as her own complicity as a journalist. As her rising fame and growing political awakening coincided, she made it her mission to expose the crimes Beijing is committing in the far reaches of its nation, no matter the cost. Reveling in the beauty of East Turkestan and its people – its music, its culture, its heritage, and above all its emphasis on community and family – this groundbreaking memoir gives us a glimpse beyond what the Chinese state wants us to see, showcasing a woman who was willing to risk not just her own life, but also that of everyone she loves, to expose her people's story to the world.

Much love.

In the US, college students at University of California Berkeley, NYU, and Columbia University gathered on their campuses, carrying white sheets of paper as those in China have been doing. The blank, white pages are a symbol of protest against Chinese censors. At Berkeley, students set up a candlelight vigil for the victims of a fire in a Urumqi apartment building. At least 10 people died in the fire after months of a strict Covid lockdown saw residents locked inside of their homes by officials. Lockdowns were blamed for the inability of fire fighters to put out the blaze fast enough, in which a 3-year-old was among the casualties. Protestors on Berkeley’s campus set fire to a masked Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal, representing Chinese President Xi Jinping. Students from NYU gathered in New York City’s Washington Square Park to protest in solidarity with Chinese citizens stepping up in their own country, setting up another candlelight vigil. Protestors in the square chanted "no lockdown, but freedom. No lies, but dignity. No Cultural Revolution, but reform. No supreme leaders, but votes. No slaves, but citizens. Twitter user Indy posted the footage. https://twitter.com/i/status/1597033132615602176 - Play Video At Columbia University in New York City, protestors used facemasks to cover the face of a statue that sits iconically before the schools largest library. Protestors held a banner that read, "Chinese Community Party, Step Down! Give Me Liberty of Death!" Demonstrations were also seen in Tokyo, Japan, with Chinese students protesting outside of the city’s Chinese Embassy while holding white sheets of paper. In London, England, protestors chanted "down with the party, down with Xi Jinping, Free China," flying the flag of East Turkestan, the region of China where the apartment fire broke out. Protests had sparked in China following the Urumqi apartment fire last week. Chinese citizens took to the streets in major cities like Shanghai and Beijing in opposition of the country’s "Zero Covid" policy, which issues strict restrictions for those found to be positive for the virus, including separating them from those who test negative, like family members. https://thepostmillennial.com/desantis-slams-apple-as-vassal-of-the-ccp-after-it-removes-airdrop-from-chinese-iphones?utm_campaign=64487 DeSantis SLAMS Apple as 'vassal of the CCP' after it limits AirDrop on Chinese iPhones Apple has beed accused of being vassals for the Chinese Communist Party by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis after the tech giant restricted its AirDrop feature amid White Paper Revolution protests breaking out across the country. Chinese citizens are demonstrating against the CCP's lockdown policies. The criticism comes as Apple and Google consider pulling Twitter from their respective app stores in response to owner Elon Musk's new free speech policies, which include dropping restrictions around so-called Covid disinformation. They have been encouraged to do so by some American journalists, including those at the Washington Post. Musk has said he is a free speech absolutist, and believes the platform should be open to discourse and should not engage in censorship. The AirDrop feature is a vital tool for those in authoritarian countries, as the feature uses direct connections between phones rather than using any internet signal to communicate. On November 9, Apple released its new iOS. The update made it so that iPhones sold in mainland China can only receive messages from people for just 10 minutes before the function stops working. Gov. DeSantis made several comments about China during a media appearance on Tuesday, where he accused Apple of being a "vassal of the CCP," and warned that "nuking" Twitter off the app store would be anti-free speech. https://rumble.com/v1xw06a-desantis-slams-apple-for-being-a-vassal-of-the-ccp..html - Play Video Yesterday, Musk said that he was prepared to "go to war" with Apple over the prospect it pulling the app. In a tweet on Tuesday, Musk said that it is a "real problem" that Apple and Google "effectively control access to most of the Internet via their app stores." Protests in China have raged on across several cities in respose to extreme measures taken by the CCP under President Xi Jinping. On Monday, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby was asked why the Biden administration had not responded more strongly in support of the ongoing people's protests in China against that country's authoritarian regime. Kirby said, "We're watching this closely as you might expect, we would. And again, we continue to stand up and support the right of peaceful protest. And I think we're gonna watch this closely and we'll see where things go." Kirby said that President Biden would not be speaking on behalf of protestors, and that the protestors are "speaking for themselves." Speaking of Big Tech: https://thepostmillennial.com/google-youtube-spend-millions-to-launch-global-fact-check-fund?utm_campaign=64487 Google, YouTube spend MILLIONS to launch Global Fact Check Fund On Tuesday, Google and YouTube announced that they will be providing a $13.2 million grant to the nonprofit Poynter Institute's International Fact Checking Network with the goal of launching a new "Global Fact Check Fund," set to launch in early 2023. The move, which marks the companies' largest fact-checking grant to date, comes as they continue to ramp up their fight against "misinformation" online. According to Google and YouTube, the grant will "support [the Poynter Institute's] network of 135 fact-checking organizations from 65 countries covering over 80 languages." The companies justified their decision by noting that "helping people to identify misinformation is a global challenge." "The Global Fact Check Fund," they explained, "will help fact-checkers to scale existing operations or launch new ones that elevate information, uplift credible sources and reduce the harm of mis- and disinformation around the globe." Organizations are expected to use the funding to "incorporate new technologies, create or expand digital footprints, optimize verification tools, and increase their capacities to deepen audience engagement through innovative storytelling formats such as audio, video, or podcasts." "The world needs fact-checking more than ever before," IFCN executive director Baybars Örsek said. "This partnership with Google and YouTube infuses financial support to global fact-checkers and is a step in the right direction, and while there’s much work to be done, this partnership has sparked meaningful collaboration and an important step. In recent years, investments in programs aimed at tackling mis- and disinformation online have grown in tandem with peoples' interest and awareness in the subject. According to data from Google, in October 2022, interest in mis- and disinformation across the world reached its highest point since 2004, when records began, with the most pressing topic being the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, big tech's fact-checking apparatus went into overdrive as companies struggled to keep up with information that seemed to be changing on a daily, if not hourly basis. YouTube has been criticized for its crackdowns on those who shared ideas that opposed the mainstream, many of whom have had their views vindicated in the months since. https://www.based-politics.com/2022/11/29/biden-rushing-to-track-the-20-billion-we-gave-ukraine/ Biden rushing to track the $20 billion we gave Ukraine Republicans, who are poised to take control of the House in January, have promised to audit the immense amount of money our Congress has been shipping off to fight another country’s war. Among the goals of the audit would be determining how much of the money ended up in the “wrong hands” as previous tracking efforts proved the Biden administration only inspected a small fraction of the funds. Republicans are not without allies across the aisle in this effort. As it turns out, there are still a few, truly and consistently, anti-war folks left on the Democrat’s bench who share the GOP’s concern over our involvement in this conflict. “The taxpayers deserve to know that investment is going where it’s intended to go,” Rep. Jason Crow, D (CO), said. “In any war, there can be missteps and misallocation of supplies.” According to reports, only 10% of the 22,000 weapons the US gave Ukraine between February and November 1 have been inspected. The threats of an audit have led to a lot of handwringing by warmongers in both parties, as well as overseas. Members of Parliament have worried out loud that these investigations may lead to the US cutting its funding to Ukraine altogether…which would be, umm, ideal. While we should absolutely not be involved in this proxy war that is threatening global peace, spurring an energy crisis, and deepening the recession many countries including our own are experiencing, a basic audit of the funds is the bare minimum here. It is outrageous that we’re sending billions of dollars to this cause at all, much less without any idea how they are being utilized. Some Congressional leaders, namely Rand Paul, have been working to mandate such oversight for some time and have largely been opposed by both Republican and Democrats. To enter a war, the US is supposed to require a vote by all members of Congress. That hasn’t happened in over two decades while, at the same time, we have invested trillions of taxpayer dollars and given up thousands of American lives involving ourselves in conflicts that don’t pertain to us and that the American people never got to vote on. https://thepoliticalinsider.com/monkeypox-gets-canceled-who-says-name-is-racist-changes-it-to-mpox/ Monkeypox Gets Canceled: WHO Says Name is Racist, Changes It to ‘Mpox’ In what seems to be another foray into left wing “logic,” the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Monday that they would no longer use the term “monkeypox” because of “racist and stigmatizing language” over usage of the term. WHO released a statement which read in part, “Following a series of consultations with global experts, WHO will begin using a new preferred term ‘mpox’ as a synonym for monkeypox. Both names will be used simultaneously for one year while ‘monkeypox’ is phased out.” The trend of renaming diseases is not a new one. Political correctness was front and center for WHO as far back as 2015 when they released “Best Practices for the Naming of New Human Diseases.” At the time, WHO stated that new disease names should be assigned, “with the aim to minimize unnecessary negative impact of disease names on trade, travel, tourism or animal welfare, and avoid causing offense to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups.” An earlier announcement was made in June after approximately thirty scientists declared there was, “urgent need for a non-discriminatory and non-stigmatizing nomenclature for the monkeypox virus.” The Biden administration, in their never ending search for perfect political correctness compliance, had already privately urged a name change, arguing that calling it monkeypox could be hampering vaccination efforts. The organization posted to Twitter their support of a Team Trans Draft Tournament that was held in Middleton, Wisconsin. They wrote, “The NHL is proud to support this past weekend’s Team Trans Draft Tournament in Middleton, Wisconsin. This was the first tournament comprised entirely of transgender and nonbinary players, with around 80 folks participating!” The organization took it a step further when they responded to a user who asked, “So, men playing on womans team?” The league responded, “Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Nonbinary identity is real.” This tweet and the celebration of the tournament are not only a denial of reality, they are promoting other people to embrace in this denial of reality. This statement of idol worship comes a little over a month after the NHL embraced anti-white racism where they claimed in their Accelerating Diversity & Inclusion report that the organization’s teams are too white. In order to address what they view as a problem they revealed plans to reduce the percentage of white people that work for them. https://twitter.com/i/status/1582493338296532992 - Play Video Welp, there you go… hockey is dead. China's detention of Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities in the north-western region of East Turkestan may amount to crimes against humanity, following the United Nations Human Rights office release of its long-awaited report on Wednesday titled "OHCHR Assessment of Human Rights Concerns in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region." The 45-page report, which is in PDF format, called on Beijing to immediately release all individuals deprived of Liberty to clarify the whereabouts of those whose families have been unable to locate them and to undertake a full review of its laws on domestic security and repeal all discriminatory laws. In response to the ruling of the report, during a discussion with Radio Islam International, Arslan Hidayat says that for the first time, the UN is taking a stance on what has been happening in it Turkestan, not to the level they would like to see because there have been other reports. An independent tribunal has said there is genocide and crimes against humanity in East Turkestan.

Several international news reports are denouncing crimes against humanity against the Uyghurs in East Turkestan. Calls to address and put an end to genocide and the reportedly different measures taken by the Chinese authorities (forced re-education, forced labour, forced sterilization, forced marriages, sexual violence, torture) are not prompting an urgent international community response. Why is this happening? What is the current situation in this territory? What are the human and women's rights violations and why we should it's important to pay attention? I sit down with Salih Hudayar, Prime Minister of the East Turkistan Government-in-Exile. The East Turkistan Government-in-Exile claims to be the sole representation of East Turkistan and its people on the international stage. East Turkestan is an area annexed by the People's Republic of China in 1949 and is officially recognized as the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region despite The East Turkistan Government in Exile's calls on the U.S. and other governments to recognize East Turkistan. I talked with Salih about his journey establishing the East Turkistan Government-in-Exile and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Xinjiang region. We spoke about how platforms and big tech have impacted communications and organization of the Uyghur people in both positive and negative ways. Hudayar gives us some examples of the double standards he's seen when using monopolized tech offers such as Facebook ads and we comment on a short list of tech companies that have been deemed unsafe for use by political figures like Salih, some examples being Zoom and TikTok. Despite the extremely serious nature of what is taking place in East Turkistan/Xinjiang, we do find some reasons to be optimistic and hopeful about progress. Salih notes that Google translate has added the Uyghur language and we speak about the growing population of Americans, and citizens globally, who have become familiar and supportive of Prime Minister Hudayar's mission for East Turkistan. 00:00 - Subscribe and Fight Big Tech 00:31 - What and where is East Turkistan? 03:50 - How does a Government-in-Exile start? 06:13 - How has media/tech coverage been on what's happening in Xinjiang? 07:52 - Is your voice being muted by big tech? 09:03 - Facebook's double standard 09:32 - Why do you avoid using Zoom? 10:04 - Censorship on TikTok 11:21 - Experience with 50 cent army bots 12:57 - The information war 15:51 - Positive moves from big tech 18:33 - Boycott of 2022 Beijing Olympics 22:25 - Support from the people 28:08 Enes Kanter Speaking out 29:35 - How can viewers/listeners help? 31:32 - Does this come directly from the top? 35:25 - Thank you for joining us! China calls it 're-education' and a clampdown on Islamic terror; others call it genocide, with disturbing parallels to the events of the Holocaust. Roy Jenkins reports on the plight of the Uyghur people of Xinjiang, or East Turkestan in China. With a language and culture quite distinct from that of the Han Chinese people, it's now estimated that 1M people or more are being detained in 're-education camps', incarcerated on grounds of race, culture and religion. Roy Jenkins talks to one Uyghur exile, Rahima Mahmut, who is campaigning on behalf of her people, despite the obvious dangers to her own safety and that of her family back in China. She has lost contact with her brothers and sisters since the 2016 clampdown on Uyghurs. Her story has caught the attention of a prominent Jewish human rights campaigner, Mia Hasenson-Gross, and there are now widening calls for bringing economic and moral pressure to bear on the Chinese government.

It traces Chinese imperial attempts to first turn the area into a vassal, and then incorporate the region entirely into the empire, creating a new nationalist ideology based on a multicultural identity. The discussion starts from the 8th century AD and the fall of the Uyghur Khaghanate, and ends with the story of the reintegration of Xinjiang into the PRC after 1949, and the CCP's views on the status of the region since then.

Even the most spineless of liberals have noticed the difference. This show was recorded on Thursday the 4th of June to meet deadline. 3CR studios are still closed. My apologies if there are glaring ommissions in the show. The situation out there is developing rapidly. Yesterday, the 6th of June, was the Melbourne Black Lives Matter protest organised by the Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance and participated in by a broad section of society. This was the biggest protest in Melbourne under any type of social distancing restrictions.I hope that the event was a success. I expect there was brutality and probably a lot of fines.Today's show will cover, in part, the current trouble in the imperial core, responses to said trouble, attempts from the imperial core to distract from the dysfunction, and compare the BLM protests in the US with the Hong Kong protests. Coronavirus news is on hold this week! First up, TROUBLE IN THE IMPERIAL CORE: namely the protests sparked by the "alleged" police murder of George Floyd. - US National guard depployments - 62,000 Nation Guard Members on duty according to National Guard Bureau. These troops operate under State Active Duty orders in co-operation and somewhat subordinate to state and local law enforcement. The rules as to force and armaments vary from state to state. Ranging from crowd-control armaments - batons, tasers and peppery spray in Colorado to pistols in Minnesota.    Washington DC's National Guard is activated in its entirety and this particular grouping takes orders from the president, rather than the state authorities. - People continue to be murdered by police so far in ongoing protests. In Louisville David McAtee, BBQ restaurant owner was murdered by the police. No body camera footage is available to corroborate police claims they were returning fire because no body cameras were turn on. In response to this particular piece of news the police chief of Louisville was fired by the mayor. David McAtee is still dead. - It is telling that the country which had precious little money to respond to COVID-19 has bottomless coffers when it comes to deploying the full might of the state against its citizens and paying overtime for police. It's a classic portrayal of the kinds of rights which US citizens enjoy: abstract rights of political expression and free speech and the actual right to be murdered by an out-of-control police force which grew up watching the same kind of disgusting police dramas which still poison the minds of the populace today. No money for PPE but money for teargas. - Defense Secretary Mark Esper: “I think the sooner that you mass and dominate the battlespace, the quicker this dissipates and we can get back to the right normal,” said in a call with governors on Monday. The use of military language and tactics to control the populace is not new and is part of the problem which civilians have with the so-called "right normal".------ Attempted distractions from the imperial core    Some kind of bizarre play to the envangelical right with Trump walking to a church. To provide this passage there was a huge assualt on gathered protests. During this assault an Australian 7 news cameraman was hit with a teargas projectile fired by police. To hear protestants say Trump is doing a Jericho walk should be a moment of shame for people of faith.    US Courts have ruled that Syrian and Iran are liable for damages for American citizens who are wonded and killed by Palestinians in Israel in yet another insult to sovereignty. This isn't the first time US courts have tried this one and I doubt it will be the last.        The US and UK imperial mainstream and the confused elements of the left over there and in Australia are all concerned about a proposed law in Hong Kong. According to such media agencies: "China's proposed national security law could end Hong Kong as we know it." Considering HK as it lies is a vestigial remnant of UK colonialism I think that the end of HK "as we know it" would be a good thing for HKers. The usual cohort of "pro-democracy" US bootlickers have lined up to whinge about it. US law-makers are assessing it under the Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act- this is an act for which aforementioned subaltern imperialists lobbied. Under the act the US assesses whether HK is sufficiently autonomous from China and if not, sanctions will be applied. This "autonomy" actually means how rigorously HK is advancing the foreign policy interests of the United States of America. HK must enforce US sanctions, export law and trade policy relating to mainland China to safeguard US business interests operating in HK from the realities of business in a space which is being de-colonised by the PRC.     Added to this the US is weighing in on China's policies toward its own ethnic minorities, namely, the Uyghur muslims in Xinjiang - a topic covered on Alternative News in previous months. In essence, East Turkestan separatists have allied with the sinophobic West over a disagreement about what China should do to manage poverty and terrorism in the northwest of the country and then how to manage a transition from an agraian economy to a technology-manufacturing economy. Today I saw a claim that there are 2 million Uyghurs in concentration camps in Xinjiang. This is the biggest figure so far. I hope, one day, that I see reports of 10 million detainees. These figures are absolute garbage and should be ridiculed and treated as such. The fact that our media parrots these figures handed down to us from US newspapers and Australian think-tanks sponsored by US weapons manufacturers should really be ringing the alarm bells.HK protests 2019-2020 vs USA protests 2020CharacterisationHK protests largely characterised (in good and bad faith) as anti-auth, anti-imprial, left-wing protests. This is because they are protesting both the HK govt and the govt of the PRC. These protests are mis-characterised *in the interests of US Imperialism*.The idea that these protests are left-wing is hard for me to understand. The demands of the protestors are: Withdraw the extradition bill, don't call the protests 'riots', amnesty for arrested protesters, independent inquiry into police use of force against protesters and for the CE (wtf) of HK to resign with new CEs elected. These demands have largely arisen from the activities of the protests themselves. The only 'democratic' demand is the one calling for the election of a chief exec. How about: affordable housing, extradition bill should only be for financial crimes, the expansion of existing poverty eradiction programs, sustainable development ONLY, UK reparations for 150 years of colonialism? How about: the end of financial capitalism? 90% tax rate on the 1%? Massive expansion of social programs?Possibly because these are the demands of the poor and marginalised, and the protests do not comprise these groups.Being pro-democracy does not mean left-wing. For instance, the USA is a democratic country but we don't call the USA left-wing. Australia is a democracy but you wouldn't call us left-wing.The foolish assumption that if there are protestors they are in the right has duped the vast majority of the left. Smashing windows doesn't make you left-wing.Now, the protests in the USA. Are the protesters left-wing? Are they in the right? What are their demands? There are plenty of smashed windows - are these protest, not, in fact, the SAME as the HK protests? I think not.Police ramming protesters with cars, the national guard firing at people who are on their porches, ongoing murders by police - these things are not common across both movements. These things are only happening in the United States of America. Why is this? This answer may not shock you: The USA is an authoritarian police-state in which you are free to speak your mind, catch COVID-19 while becoming medically bankrupt and then get shot in the face with a rubber bullet for walking home. But at least it's not communism! To conclude: the HK protests have more in common with right-wing "quarantine=communism" protests than they do the current wave of protests in the US sparked by the police murder of George Floyd. This brings me, with some chagrin to an appeal for support for this radio station, 3CR. Please donate. You can do so at 3cr.org.au and put your favourite show down too. I note that at this time there is a huge push for donations to Indigenous Lives causes. These causes are highly valuable. The Campaign For International Co-operation and Disarmament supports these causes - as does 3CR. On the Altnertive News page on 3CR I will include a list of ATSI Lives, Land and Labour causes which I encourage you to give to. I understand this is a rough time for heaps of us. My apologies if this is one request too many. Systemic racism is real and it has real-life implications. Oppressed people the world over suffer under the heel of this ill. Indigenous people in Australia are part of this cohort. Since the Royal Commission into Deaths in Custody in 1991 there have been 432 further deaths and ZERO convictions. This must end. The plight of the Uyghur Muslims of Xinjiang - with Arslan Hidayat

This week we shall be looking at the situation of the Muslim’s in China. Welcome to the first podcast of The Thinking Muslim, follow the show on @thinking_muslim and do remember to subscribe.  For the past few years news about the plight of the Uyghurs in the restive north-western region of Xinjiang, known as East Turkestan, has gradually worsened. The destruction of Mosques; the use of technology to monitor every movement of the population, the banning of fasting in Ramadan, the introduction of Han Chinese visitors to each home to observe the family unit, the closing of Islamic seminaries have all been documented as the Chinese state attempts to disassociate Islam from the daily practice of ordinary believers. But it is the introduction of camps, what the Chinese government euphuistically calls ‘re-education centres that have focussed minds around the world that nothing less than the annihilation of an entire religious and cultural identity is taking place in full view of the international community.  The Uyghurs have always resisted Chinese rule and their heroism in the face of Chinese imperialism predates 1949 when Chairman Mao brought the Communists to power. The Uyghurs suffered under the repression of the Cultural Revolution, where religion was suppressed. But in recent years, China’s rapid development has allowed it to acquire sophisticated forms of state control, never seen in the history of authoritarian rule. The state regulates every inch of the lives of its Muslim population, on a scale and ambition that informs us about the type of world China is trying to create.  To try and understand more about the Uyghurs and their struggle, this week I am pleased to have as our guest on the Thinking Muslim Podcast, Arslan Hidayat an Uyghur activist and campaigner currently based in Turkey to talk to us about the extent to which Muslim Uyghurs have been subject to China’s programme of repression. Arslan has been active for many years, bringing to the world’s attention the situation in East Turkestan, long before it was adopted by the mainstream press. He remains in contact with members of the community and has become a source of information for many. He can be found on Twitter, @arslan_hidayat and I would encourage you all to follow him.  You can also access my medium page here https://medium.com/@thinkingmuslim/the-thinking-muslim-podcast-a-conversation-with-uyghur-activist-arslan-hidayet-20fe43015154
