Photographers love to accessorize their cameras, and the iPhone is no different. A case is one thing, but what about other photo-centric add-ons? Should you buy an extra-wide or telephoto lens that snaps in front of the built-in cameras? What about grips and shutter buttons that make the iPhone feel more like a traditional camera? We weigh in with our opinions and experiences with these types of embellishments. (And Jeff accidentally uses the B-word.) Recorded - 6/30/2024 On Episode 277 of the Almost Sideways Movie Podcast, we review two major releases of the weekend and debate which one was better. Were either of them even the best movie of the weekend? (Everyone says no!) Then, we dive into a comedy classic from the 80's that redefined what comedy could be. What's the best Spinal Tap song? What's the best throwaway line Spinal Tap gives? Should Spinal Tap be considered a Rob Reiner movie or a Christopher Guest movie? All these questions and more are discussed and answered. Filmmaking can be highly technical, or not. As first-time director Alex Sheremet argues, finding the right topic and having an artistic blueprint in mind are far more important to master, as no amount of technical training will overcome bad ideas and artistic choices. Alex Sheremet and Joel Parrish sit down with Destin Davis of the Benton Courier to discuss their upcoming film, “From There to There: Bruce Ario, the Minneapolis Poet”. THIS WEEK on the GWA Podcast, we interview author, artist, writer, and academic, Pamela L Bannos on the very private yet supremely inquisitive street photographer who spent her days working as a nanny, VIVIAN MAIER!! Maier (1926–2009) was street photographer who has been compared to the likes of Helen Levitt or Diane Arbus. But here's the thing: despite taking pictures incessantly and amassing more than 100,000 negatives, she never published or exhibited her work in her lifetime. This is one of the most fascinating stories in art history. Maier's photographs reveal a woman who had empathy for her subjects – from children to the elderly – and who were often unaware of her presence. She famously worked with a Rolliflex camera which she would use for several decades, allowing for her signature square format, but which didn't need to be brought up to one's eye – enhancing even further how she could catch her subjects off guard. When asked about her occupation by a man she once knew, she'd say “I'm sort of a spy… I'm the mystery woman.” Tracing the people, politics, and landscape of mid to late 20th century North America, Maier's extensive oeuvre recorded life as it passed her by. And here's the thing, because she never exhibited or published her work during her lifetime, she was predominantly known for her primary role as a nanny to children in the Chicago area. So much remains to be missing, which is why I can't wait to speak to Pamela, who has looked at tens of thousands of these images; traced Maier's footsteps from the US to France, and delved into the archive in search of everything we might know about the photographer. Pamela Bannos is a professor at Northwestern University, and the author of Vivian Maier: A Photographer's Life and Afterlife, 2017: http://vivianmaierproject.com/. It was a story that captured the attention of the public and art critics worldwide: A treasure trove of exceptional photographs was discovered after a storage locker auction in 2007. The then unknown photographer? Vivian Maier, a woman who worked her whole life as a nanny. Even after two documentaries were made about Vivian–one of which, “Finding Vivian Maier,” was nominated for an Oscar–many questions remained about her life and art. After watching “Finding Vivian Maier,” retired executive Ann Marks spent years trying to answer those questions, becoming one of the few people who have seen all of Vivian's personal records and the complete archive of her 140,000 images. That material, along with countless interviews and other research, became the basis for Vivian Maier Developed: The Untold Story of the Photographer Nanny, a gorgeous book replete with Vivian's photographs and telling details from Vivian's life. In this week's episode of Book Dreams, Ann talks with Julie and Eve about everything from the moment that Vivian's photographs were discovered, to her astonishing talent and some of the reasons it remained hidden from the public for as long as it did, to the dysfunction in her family that contributed to the mystery surrounding her. Ann Marks spent thirty years as a senior executive in large corporations and served as Chief Marketing Officer of Dow Jones/The Wall Street Journal. She is now an internationally renowned resource on Vivian Maier's life and work. Her research has been featured in major media outlets, including the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, and the Associated Press. Vivian Maier stacks up next to many of the greatest photographers of our time, but she never planned on being seen. Born February 1, 1926 to a French mother and an Austrian-American father she would be remembered as never without her camera after the age of 10. Vivian's parents separated when she was just three and in 1932 she left for her mother's native France. Influenced by Jeanne Bertrand an artist and photographer and close friend to her mother, she began to take photos around the small Haute Alps village. In 1951, Vivian was hired as a nanny for a Southampton family. In 1956 she moved to Chicago and began to work with the Gensburg family and their three boys who would remain in her life until her death. A series of families followed and each move included her 200 boxes filled with every single piece of her life including hundreds of undeveloped film canisters. In 2007, Jon Maloof, a young Chicago real estate investor bought a new house and wanted to write a history of the area and needed some old photos. At the auction house across the street, he found a large collection of negatives and film. He placed a bid on the largest box for $380 and that was the start of an obsessive hunt. Once he began to look at the photos he was stunned by how amazing they were. He tried to find info on the photographer but she was totally unknown. In 2008, a year before she died Jon Maloof began to upload her photos one by one onto Flickr and became an instant sensation. In 2009 after he found her name it led to the Gensburg boys and they told him to take whatever they didn't keep. Her life now came together before their eyes. The rest of the world finally discovered Vivian in 2013 when Finding Vivian Maier's documentary came out and was a hit. There was a court case against Maloof wondering if he did enough to find her heirs and a foundation in her name and a scholarship created by Maloof. Today her collection is featured in museums around the world and recently in Paris at the Musée du Luxembourg which constantly had a line to attend. The 2013 documentary Finding Vivian Maier explores the life of revolutionary Chicago street photographer Vivian Maier. A notorious recluse, Maier excelled in the art world and received massive acclaim upon her death because of a chance discovery of her work. But Maier’s life deviates from the conventional idea of artistic aspiration: Why didn’t she share her work for the world to see? On this episode of Remainders, Darren and Patrick decipher an artist’s life and discuss the reasons why we create, the ethics of personal expression, and whether we can separate art from the artist. Through photographs, we get a glimpse of Vivian Maier and a complex life behind the art. Join us as we see what remains.more: http://www.remainderspod.com/season-1

Today we welcome a special guest to the B&H Photography Podcast: actor and comedian Jeff Garlin. We also are launching the B&H Photography Podcast Leica Photo Challenge, so please click the link to find out how to enter to win a Leica Q2 Digital Camera. Jeff Garlin is well-known as a stand-up comedian and, of course, as a star of the hit television shows, The Goldbergs and Curb Your Enthusiam. About fifteen years ago, he turned a love for photography, for the work of the masters—Alfred Eisenstadt, Jim Marshall, Mary Ellen Mark, to name a few—into his own photographic practice, and we are all the beneficiaries of his engaged eye. In March, Garlin debuted his series, “A Big Bowl of Wonderful,” at the Leica Gallery Los Angeles, and we talk to him about how this series of portraits of his co-stars and friends in the television community—many taken on set or backstage—developed over a long curve, one founded in respect for the medium and applied with a simple stratagem: see something interesting and frame it in the most creative way possible. With that in mind, we talk about trusting your gut, not overthinking a shot, being comfortable with your subjects, but also about gaining the confidence to take photos, especially of those you know and respect. Garlin also talks about his affinity for Leica, especially the M system, about the difference between actors and comedians, and talking photography with Jeff Bridges. We also ask him about his role as executive producer on the film, Finding Vivian Maier. This really is a photography lover’s conversation, summed up best by one of Garlin’s comments: “I’m taking a picture because it brings me joy.” About bringing joy. If you are interested in winning a Leica Q2 Digital Camera, be sure to enter the B&H Photography Podcast Leica Challenge, which launches May 28, 2020 and runs until June 21, 2020. Click the link, follow the instructions, submit a photo you have taken recently that reflects “life during shutdown,” and you could be the winner of this spectacular 47MP full-frame Leica camera. Join us for a great episode. Guest: Jeff Garlin Photograph © Jeff Garlin

Henry Giroux is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He has written dozens of books and articles including America at War with Itself and the forthcoming The Public in Peril: Trump and the Menace of American Authoritarianism. During this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Professor Giroux and Chauncey evaluate American democracy one year after Trump's election, wonder about how to stay positive during such a horrible time, and ponder what resistance looks like against American fascism. Professor Giroux also explains the dangers of malignant reality, why Trump's voters will never leave his side, and makes a bold prediction about the 2020 presidential election. This week's episode also features some bonus content that can be heard at the end of the show. Documentary filmmaker Charlie Siskel stops by the virtual bar and salon to discuss his new project American Anarchist. Charlie also shares some insights learned from the making of the documentary projects Bowling for Columbine, The Awful Truth, and Finding Vivian Maier. And in the spirit of our ongoing discussion about Donald Trump, Charlie works through his initial thoughts about a documentary on America's fascist-in-chief demagogue. In this week's episode, Chauncey DeVega tells the truth about the murderous and evil Republican "tax bill" which passed during the middle of the night last Friday. Chauncey is also disgusted by the Democratic Party and all the so-called liberals and progressives who are unable to stop the Republican Party--as well as how the American people are sheep who have not taken to the streets in massive protests against the Republican Party's destruction of the Commons and efforts to bring the United States back to a time before the 19th century.

On Ep 37 Paco and George welcome comedian and actress Esther Ku to talk about the riveting 2013 doc Finding Vivian Maier. They also discuss Esther's childhood, her start in the Boston comedy scene and her recent work on Family Guy. Maier was a French-American woman who worked most of her life as a nanny and housekeeper to a multitude of Chicago families. She carried a camera everywhere she went, but Maier's photographic legacy was largely unknown during her lifetime. She died in 2009. The film documents how Maloof discovered her work and, after her death, uncovered her life through interviews with people who knew her. Maloof had purchased a box of photo negatives at a 2007 Chicago auction, then scanned the images and put them on the Internet. She is now considered one of the greatest 20th Century photographers. Esther Ku is a Korean-American stand-up comedian, television personality, and actress. Ku was a cast member on the MTV show Girl Code and Wild 'N Out. Ku was chosen as one of the ten best comedians for the 2006 NBC Stand-up for Diversity Showcase in New York City. Ku has also been a featured regular performer in the Boston International Comedy Festival and the New York Underground Festival. She has been called "the Asian Sarah Silverman". **Sup Doc has created a Patreon page for those that can help out. We will also be providing unique Sup Doc content for our contributors. On this episode we celebrate an idol to everyone on this podcast in Roger Ebert and the documentary format he championed, by discussing LIFE ITSELF, which is new to Netflix streaming. This is another big episode as the two older films aren’t that old (both are documentary films from 2014) with FINDING VIVIAN MAIER vs. ACTRESS as we explore life in front of and behind the camera. Also as an extra bonus after our debate, we have an interview with the director of ACTRESS, Robert Greene.

Mission accomplished! We hit five score with a very special outing to our local multiplex to watch our first Movie Night documentary, Finding Vivian Maier. Since it's late February in Illinois, we nearly freeze to death in the worst way possible – in an oversized van in a snowy parking lot, bellies full of salty popcorn, trying to make art for you people.

Jason Wood, Director of Programming at Curzon Cinemas, reviews Finding Vivian Maier, a documentary about a nanny with a secret life and an inspirational talent.
Andrew's guest is Chicago-native comedian Jeff Garlin, co-star and an executive producer of HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" starring Larry David. The release of the documentary film "Finding Vivian Maier," now showing at the Landmark Theatres in Chicago and Highland Park, produced by Jeff Garlin, prompted Andrew to rebroadcast this 2012 conversation [...]
Bill Henderson and Brian Tramontana talk about the documentary "Finding Vivian Maier"
"I didn't know if it was good but I thought it was really good." John Maloof on finding a box of photos, a pivotal moment that led to the doc "Finding Vivian Maier."
I look at Vivian Maier and remember Jane Hathaway, Mr. Drysdale's scholarly secretary on The Beverly Hillbillies. Vivian was born in France in 1926. We don't know how or when Vivian came to America, but at age 11 she began working in a New York sweatshop. She learned English by sitting in movie theaters, alone in the dark. Alone in the dark. That pretty much describes Vivian's life except for 1959, the year she turned 33 and found just enough money to travel abroad to strange and exotic places; Egypt, Thailand, Vietnam, France, Italy, Indonesia, Taiwan. Highly unusual for a woman of her time, Vivian journeyed alone. Even more unusual, she often wore a man's bulky jacket, ugly and awkward men's shoes and a large, floppy hat. And she constantly took photographs that she never showed anyone. It appears that Vivian escaped the sweatshops by moving to Chicago in the early 1950's and taking work as a nanny to three young boys: Matthew, Lane and John are now old men but remember Vivian as “peculiar, our own Mary Poppins. One time she brought home a dead snake to show us, another time she convinced the milkman to drive us all to school in his delivery truck. But in the 10 years she worked for our family, she never once received a phone call.” When the 3 boys were raised, Vivian became unemployed. The next half-century saw her shift from family to family, always caring for children who were not her own. One employer hired Vivian to care for his disabled daughter. “But first thing in the morning on her day off, that camera would be around her neck and we wouldn't see her again until late at night. I remember her as a private person but one who had very strong opinions about movies and politics.” Vivian was born a French Catholic but according to her employers she died an anti-Catholic, Socialist, Feminist movie critic who hated American movies but loved foreign films. At age 83, still in Chicago, she slipped on the ice and hit her head and died. But on the other side of Chicago, alone in the dark, sat 100,000 photo negatives and more than 1,000 rolls of undeveloped film in a public storage facility. When Vivian didn't show up to pay her storage fees, the contents of her space were turned over to an auction house. Vivian's features remind me of Jane Hathaway but her life reminds me of Emily Dickinson. No one knew Emily was a writer until after the funeral when they cleaned out her chest-of-drawers and found more than 1,500 of the finest poems ever written in the English language. Likewise, the buyer of Vivian's negatives was stunned by what he found. And though John Maloof has scanned only 30,000 of Vivian's 100,000 photo negatives, Finding Vivian Maier is currently the featured exhibit at the Chicago Cultural Center. A book and a documentary movie are in the works. As a longtime collector of black-and-white photography (and the publisher of Accidental Magic, a coffee-table photo book,) I believe we'll soon see Vivian Maier photographs featured at Sotheby's and Christie's. From a storage locker in suburban Chicago to the finest auction houses in the world, I believe the second journey of Vivian Maier has only just begun. http://mondaymemo.wpengine.com/rabbithole (A)Roy H.
