Last year, Egypt set a new record for fruit and vegetable exports: nearly 7 million tonnes, valued at €6 billion, with 20 percent destined for Europe. According to the World Bank, agriculture is the sector that employs the highest proportion of women in the country: around 45 percent nationwide, and as high as 94 percent in Upper Egypt. But in the fields, the working conditions of the 5 million female farm workers are dire: no contracts, half the wages of men and scorching temperatures. Grassroots organisations are now stepping in, campaigning to formalise women's labour, demand fair pay, ensure workplace safety and fight for recognition. FRANCE 24's Mathilde Delvigne and Nuria Tesón report.

In this deeply insightful episode, we welcome Ashka Naik, PhD candidate and Director of Research and Policy at Corporate Accountability, a global human rights and social justice NGO. Ashka joins Vera and Molly to explore how food systems have been colonized by powerful industry players, and why the words we use to describe what we eat matter more than ever. We unpack the political, historical, and spiritual dimensions of what Ashka calls “violent processing”—a system that has robbed us of biodiversity, cultural wisdom, ancestral practices, and even language itself. Drawing connections between ultra-processed food products, neocolonial economic models, and public health crises, Ashka makes the case for reclaiming food as power and justice. This is more than a conversation about nutrition. It's a call to collective memory, systemic change, and grassroots action.

In 2025 we turn our attention towards “Community Engagement and the Grassroots of Change.” Throughout the year we explore the stories, strategies, and successes of community-driven movements making a difference. From Self to Solidarity: How Personal Empowerment Fuels Cooperative EconomicsA Conversation with Alana Griffin, Ambassador of Ujamaa Collective  In Ep 86, we started a conversation about Personal Empowerment and Cooperative Economics through the lens of Ujamaa Collective, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The Ujamaa collective acts as a catalyst to advance Africana Women by providing a fair trade marketplace for cultural, artistic and entrepreneurial exchange through cooperative economics. In this episode we continue the conversation with Alana Griffin, Ambassador of Ujamaa Collective. Join us as we explore the process from participation to power by reimagining the power of we.The point is to shift the perspective; to take action and create new possibilties with a different measuring stick. Personal Empowerment begins with individuals recognizing their inherent worth, capabilities, and power to make choices that impact their life and community. Personal empowerment cultivates self-awareness, responsibility, and action. Cooperative Economics channels that personal power into collective agency by providing structures—like cooperatives, credit unions, and mutual aid networks—that allow individuals to pool resources, share risks, and make collective decisions for mutual benefit.    Watch: https://youtu.be/QIUEccdGpkA

I'm joined today by two remarkable men I met through the O'Shaughnessy Fellowships and Grants program. Israel Balogun was homeless and illiterate until the age of 22. Now, he leads a Nigerian youth rehabilitation nonprofit for street kids and is building a self-sustaining village for 200 out-of-school children with the support of an OSV Fellowship. Miyoba Hamuhuma lost both parents by 12 and battled polio as a child. Now he runs Enlight Abilities, a Zambian organization advocating for inclusive education and economic dignity for children with disabilities and their families, backed by an OSV Grant. “Inspiring” is overused nowadays, but here, it barely does them justice. As well as digging into their stories, we explore how personal pain became public mission, how grassroots enablement beats top-down intervention, and why they believe rewriting destiny begins with changing who gets seen, who gets supported, and who gets to dream. Katherine Lacefield is taking us behind the scenes of growing a monthly giving program from absolute zero to 2,000 committed donors in just FIVE years, all through grassroots efforts. You'll hear exactly how Katherine and her team used face-to-face canvassing and phone fundraising (NOT flashy ad campaigns or pricey agency consultants!) to spark long-term donor relationships. These are scrappy, creative tactics that built a high-retention recurring giving engine, all done in-house.We also dive deep into messaging strategies (like the “3 Ps” of monthly giving: proactive, project-based, and political power), why stewardship starts on day one, and how organizations can reframe their energy around fundraising. As the founder of Just Be Cause Consulting, Katherine has truly done it all in the fundraising world: major gifts, peer to peer campaigns, grants and my favorite topic, monthly giving. I can't wait for you to tune in for this honest and refreshing conversation.Resources & LinksConnect with Katherine on LinkedIn and learn more about her consultancy, Just Be Cause. Power Shift is an experiment in dialogue that puts decision-makers in aid and philanthropy and those affected by their decisions in honest, one-on-one conversations about the aid sector's inequalities. ___ In the latest episode of Power Shift, Hafsar Tameesuddin, a stateless Rohingya refugee and LGBTQ+ rights activist, and Raouf Mazou, one of the UN refugee agency's highest-ranking officials, navigate the complex dynamics of global refugee protection, the righteous anger of refugees and stateless people, and the challenges of supporting the more than 122 million people around the world forced to leave their homes.  Although their conversations took place before USAID's dismantlement sent the humanitarian sector into a tailspin, both Mazou's and Tameesuddin's proposals for a better refugee response strike right at the heart of the international aid system's current limitations, calling for more equitable cooperation between global and grassroots organisations, more support for refugee self-reliance, and, consequently, for less reliance on a sector facing major cuts.  “I'm a believer of collective leadership,” Tameesuddin reflected. “In a lot of ways, I feel there is goodwill from UNHCR, from the communities, and all of us. We all want to do good things and want to accomplish something great. “What is missing from my observation is that human interaction and relationship, and really building relationships with the grassroot.” ___ Subscribe on Spotify, Apple, or YouTube, or search “The New Humanitarian” in your favourite podcast app. You can find transcripts of all podcasts on our website. Newman opens up about how her daughter's experiences fueled her passion for change, what it truly takes to run for office as a woman, and how personal storytelling can shift political narratives. The conversation covers the emotional weight of the January 6th insurrection, the systemic challenges women face in leadership, and the urgent need for civic engagement. Listeners will walk away motivated to speak up, get involved, and help shape a more inclusive future. What We're Talking About... Marie Newman entered politics to fight for her daughter's rights and future. The political system remains deeply challenging—and often hostile—for women candidates. Grassroots activism plays a critical role in driving real community change. Storytelling isn't just emotional—it's strategic and essential in shifting political narratives. The January 6th insurrection marked a defining moment in America's democratic crisis. We need more women in elected office—not just as a goal, but as a necessity for true representation. Political success is never a solo journey—community backing makes all the difference. The political arena is riddled with unethical tactics and behind-the-scenes power plays. Constructive dialogue with Republican leaders is necessary, even when it's uncomfortable. Newman reflects that she's more effective and impactful as an activist than she ever felt in Congress. What if being overlooked was the best thing that ever happened to your business? When Wandra Cain walked into showrooms and got ignored, she didn't flinch—she made a mental note. That “Pretty Woman” moment stuck with her, not as a grievance, but as fuel. She'd always had a sharp eye and a natural gift for pulling beauty out of limitation, but that experience sharpened her resolve to create a design business that didn't ask for permission to be taken seriously. She built WCA Interiors from the ground up, not with flashy backing or a big team, but with intention, consistency, and a deep belief that her work belonged, regardless of who initially acknowledged it. Her journey started with pivots. From corporate desk jobs to cosmetology school, and eventually to earning her interior design degree while working full-time, she followed the tug toward creativity even when the path forward looked unclear. Early projects tested her—contractors challenged her decisions, budgets fell apart, and she didn't always know how to protect her time or profit. But instead of hiding the hard parts, she leaned in. Every mistake became a tool. Every misstep taught her how to run a better project, have firmer boundaries, and value her own expertise. What really sets Wandra apart is her ability to show up with humility and confidence at the same time. She leads projects with warmth, listens deeply to clients, and isn't afraid to say no when the fit or the numbers are off. Even with over 11,000 Instagram followers, she's more focused on building genuine relationships—online and off—than chasing engagement. For her, design isn't about ego or aesthetic signatures; it's about helping people feel truly at home in their spaces. The business didn't happen overnight. It was ten years of quiet hustle, small wins, big learning curves, and showing up again the next day. You'll learn: ✅ How to lead projects (and set boundaries) when contractors push back ✅ Why visibility matters—and how Wandra handled being underestimated ✅ Systems and client processes that helped her turn a hobby into a real business ✅ What she's doing now to market her firm without burning out on Instagram If you're an interior designer looking to grow a business that reflects who you are—and makes money doing it—this is the episode that's going to help you get there. Listen now and remember: being underestimated might be your greatest edge.   (0:00) The “Pretty Woman” moment that shaped Wandra's mindset (0:50) Wandra's origin story and entering the interior design world (4:40) Why representation in the design industry matters (12:30) Pivoting from cosmetology to design and going back to school (15:50) Learning the hard way: pricing, client management, and early business mistakes (22:40) Building confidence and refining systems and client processes (30:50) Grassroots marketing, networking, and digital growth   About Wandra Cain Wandra Cain is the founder and principal designer of WCA Interiors, a full-service interior design firm based in Easton, Pennsylvania. With a focus on creating refined yet livable luxury, Wandra believes that a well-designed home should serve as a sanctuary, capturing the spirit of the client and enhancing their lifestyle. Her approach emphasizes collaboration, ensuring each space reflects its inhabitants' unique personalities and needs. Website Instagram: @wcainteriors
