Imaging and Mapping Eastern Europe: Sarmatia Europea to Post-Communist Bloc (Routledge, 2021) puts images centre stage and argues for the agency of the visual in the construction of Europe's east as a socio-political and cultural entity. This book probes into the discontinuous processes of mapping the eastern European space and imaging the eastern European body. Beginning from the Renaissance maps of Sarmatia Europea, it moves onto the images of women in ethnic dress on the pages of travellers' reports from the Balkans, to cartoons of children bullied by dictators in the satirical press, to Cold War cartography, and it ends with photos of protesting crowds on contemporary dust jackets. Studying the eastern European 'iconosphere' leads to the engagement with issues central for image studies and visual culture: word and image relationship, overlaps between the codes of othering and self-fashioning, as well as interaction between the diverse modes of production specific to cartography, travel illustrations, caricature, and book cover design. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, visual culture, and central Asian, Russian and Eastern European studies. Dr Katarzyna Murawska-Muthesius teaches art history at Birkbeck College, University of London. She was Curator and Deputy Director of The National Museum in Warsaw, as well as Guest Professor at the Humboldt University Berlin. Her publications include Borders in Art: Revisiting Kunstgeographie (Polish Academy, 2000), National Museum in Warsaw Guide: Galleries and Study Collections (National Museum in Warsaw, 2001); Kantor was Here: Tadeusz Kantor in Great Britain (Black Dog 2011, with Natalia Zarzecka), and From Museum Critique to the Critical Museum (Ashgate 2015, with Piotr Piotrowski). She is working on a new project on the history of caricature as a medium. Steven Seegel is Professor of Slavic and Eurasian Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. This week I am back in the interviewers chair to have a natter with 2 titans of education namely: Paul A. Kirschner is Emeritus Professor of Educational Psychology at the Open University of the Netherlands as well as Guest Professor at the Thomas More University of Applied Science in Belgium. Carl Hendrick teaches at Wellington College, UK, and holds a PhD in Education from King’s College London. We are discussing their new book 'How Learning Happens- Seminal Works in Educational Psychology and what they mean in practice' . Here is Carl's introduction to the book: "Almost two years ago, I was asked by Professor Paul Kirschner to write a book with him. The original title was ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’ and the basic premise was to discuss what we felt were the foundational works in education psychology and present them to educators in a way that would hopefully inform their practice. To be asked by someone of Paul’s stature was a huge honour for me and I really enjoyed reading through almost 100 years of the best evidence on learning and the weekly meetings over Skype talking about the book (and football). The chapters are divided into six sections. In the first section we describe how our brains work and what that means for learning and teaching. This is followed by sections on the prerequisites for learning, how learning can be supported, teacher activities, and learning in context. When we got near the end of the book we thought it would be good to provide some cautionary tales so in the final section we discuss what can only be described as educational Novichok in a chapter called ‘The Seven Deadly Sins of Education’ which you can download for free here." It comes highly recommended! “So often I’ve been asked to recommend a starting text for educators interested in the workings of the mind―now I have one. The text Kirschner and Hendrick offer alongside each seminal article does a wonderful job of situating the content in the broader scientific context, and in the classroom.” – Daniel Willingham, Professor of Psychology and Director of Graduate Studies, University of Virginia “As the volume of research into psychology and education grows, it becomes ever harder for researchers, let alone teachers, to keep up with the latest findings. Moreover, striking results often turn out to be difficult, or impossible to replicate. What teachers need, therefore, is good guidance about research that has stood the test of time, and practical guidance about how these well-established findings might be used to inform teaching practice, and this is why this is such an extraordinary, wonderful and important book. Paul Kirschner and Carl Hendrick have selected the most important research publications in the psychology of education, and, for each publication, they have provided a summary of the research, the main conclusions, and a series of practical suggestions for how the findings might inform teaching practice. I know of no other book that provides such a rigorous, accessible and practical summary of the last fifty years of research in educational psychology, and anyone who wants to understand how research can improve teaching needs to read this book. Highly recommended.” – Dylan Wiliam, Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment, University College London We also have Podcast pedagogy with The Strokes, Tiger King and Ulysses! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/naylorsnatter/message
In the fifth episode of the Deep Neural Notebooks podcast, I interview Professor, Author, Sitarist and Composer, Srinivas Reddy. He is a Guest Professor of South and Southeast Asian Studies at IIT Gandhinagar and Visiting Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Contemplative Studies at Brown University. He lives in Rhode Island and spends his time performing, teaching and conducting research around the world. He is an author of 4 books, 3 of which are translations of Telugu and Sanskrit texts; and the latest book that came out this March is a critical biography of Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara, called RAYA. Srinivas is a professional concert sitarist and has given numerous recitals in the US, India and Europe. He has three albums to his credit: GITA (1999), Sitar & Tabla (2001) and Hemant & Jog (2008). This episode is more in the realms of spirituality, in the context of South Asian philosophy and the Bhagwad Gita. We discuss some of his favourite verses and chapters from the Gita, about the deep underlying wisdom, and how we can make sense of them in today's day and age. I ask him about his thoughts on religion, consciousness, meditation, his passion for music and much more. He also talks about how India never really recovered from colonialisation and how the quest for adoption of Western ideologies has left us devoid of any appreciation for our cultural heritage, and how unconditioning ourselves is the first step in moving forward on our spiritual path. Keep in mind that this episode was recorded in the first week of January, wayyy before the pandemic outbreak; so some of his advice like going out for a walk on a beautiful sunny day was shared in a pre-COVID-19 context. I hope you enjoy the episode, and learn something valuable from it. If you do, please leave a thumb's up or a 5-star rating depending on the streaming platform. Female Leader | Confidence and Momentum It only took one year for Heather Monahan to become a dominant female leader within the broadcasting industry. Her success in business development culminated in an equity partnership with her employer and it shattered the glass ceiling. Heather used her success as a springboard to build a personal brand and branch out to other forms of media, but a toxic, nepotistic workplace kept her on a short leash. When you are a threat, you will always be a target, and Heather was terminated shortly after the CEO was replaced. No Place for Emotion Heather says there is no room for emotion in business because it diminishes the ability to make sound decisions and serve effectively as a female leader. Even when she faced an extreme level of adversity, Heather maintained her composure and walked away from the situation with her head held high. Instead of viewing the circumstances as defeat, she found opportunity in the rubble and took a chance on herself. Heather focused all of her energy on building her company, Boss In Heels, and began writing her book, “Confidence Creator.” Be Unique, Be You Heather broke into the C-suite with relentless determination, learning how to operate at that level through endless trial and error. But she was never bred for an executive position. Heather's philosophy is built around stepping into your unique self so you become magnetic and people rally to your cause. And it is one of the many reasons she has been a successful female leader despite coming from nothing. No matter what happens beyond your control, no one can take away your reputation, your network, or anything you've accomplished. You just need to maintain the will to keep moving forward. James Forsyth, senior pastor of McLean Presbyterian Church, will examine John 6:26, where Jesus exposed the political motivation of the crowd who followed him. He'll ask key questions, such as, "How did the crowd's political vision for Jesus keep them from truly seeing him? In what ways can our politics distort our view of Jesus? What does it look like to pursue Jesus because he is an end in himself, not a means to other things?" We hope you can join us for what I believe will be an important discussion in the lives of those who work in politics and policy. James is the Senior Pastor of McLean Presbyterian Church, located just outside of Washington, D.C. He grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he graduated from the University of Edinburgh, before moving to the U.S. to study at Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS), Jackson. He is now a Guest Professor of Practical Theology at RTS Washington, D.C.James is married to his high school sweetheart, Rosie, and is dad to Mia, Caleb, Seamus, and Isla. Formative experiences have included growing up in a strong, yet tender, family, being a college athlete, becoming a father at the age of 19, wrestling through a dark season of anxiety, and being shaped by a handful of key mentors. Throughout, God’s grace has been the theme – a theme that now animates his life and ministry. In his free time, you might find James CrossFitting, supporting Man Utd., laughing too loudly with friends, grilling, playing guitar, or – at his happiest – enjoying his young family.Support the show (http://www.faithandlaw.org/donate)

Composer Thea Musgrave celebrated her 90th birthday this year, an event marked by celebrations and concerts around the world, including the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival. She has published more than 150 compositions, including major orchestral works and numerous operas, and continues to write every day. Thea was born in Edinburgh in May 1928, and still has sharp memories of hearing news of the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. She learned the piano as a child, but had ambitions to become a doctor. She began medical studies at the University of Edinburgh, but after struggling with the sciences, she switched to the music department, which happened to be in an adjacent building. In the early 1950s, she spent four years studying composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris before moving to London and establishing herself as a prominent member of British musical life. In 1970 she became Guest Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 1971 she married the American opera conductor Peter Mark, and she has lived in the United States since 1972. She was awarded a CBE in 2002, and earlier this year she was presented with The Queen's Medal for Music. Presenter: Lauren Laverne Producer: Sarah Taylor
Donald Macleod is in conversation with Thea Musgrave as she celebrates her 90th birthday. Donald and Thea begin by discussing her dream of becoming a composer, and the dreams that have inspired her works. Born in Edinburgh, Thea left her medical degree for music, winning a composition prize which took her to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger. A dream about a subversive clarinettist helped formed the idea for her breakthrough commission from the CBSO, the Concerto for Orchestra. They talk about her early electronic experimentation, and her idea of the dramatic abstract, where she experiments with spatial configurations of players and acoustic possibilities. Thea is also one of Britain’s most prolific living opera composers, bringing to the stage stories of figures like Mary Queen of Scots, Harriet Tubman, and Simón Bolívar. In 1970 she was offered the post of Guest Professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara and has lived and made her life as a composer in the States ever since. Donald asks her about her approach to teaching and encouraging young composers. They look at the importance of visual art in Thea’s life and imagination, leading to significant compositions inspired by Edward Hopper and J. M. W. Turner. Finally, Thea reflects on the continuing pleasure she derives from composing, as well as her on-going friendships with players, and she stresses the vital part that music plays in all of our lives. In episode #44 of PhD Career Stories, we are very happy to welcome Professor Wolfgang Nellen to the show. Professor Nellen was born in 1949 in Velbert, Germany, and has during his academic career worked in USA, Germany, Jordan, Japan, Sweden and Indonesia. As of June 2015, Professor Nellen holds a Johann Gottfried Herder Fellow of the DAAD and is currently working as a Guest Professor at Brawijaya University in Malang, Indonesia. Listen to his fascinating life story in which he generously shares his experiences and thoughts on moving on from student to professor and how that changes your duties. Interestingly the interviews were like a traveling circus. It was almost always the same applicants but each time one less, this one had won the previous position. Even though we were competitors it was a rather relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Everyone was quite positive that he or she would make it sooner or later. This is probably very different today and much more tuff. - Professor Wolfgang Nellen, Guest Professor at Brawijaya University in Malang, Indonesia For complete show notes, including links to items mentioned in this episode and a transcript of the podcast, visit www.phdcareerstories.com. Abstract: In the new data driven, algorithmic cultures of ICT for Development, the subject appears in the dialectics of connected and not-yet connected. Following the earlier tropes of visible and invisible, speaking and silent subjects, this focus on the subject follows an expected script where the promise of the digital is to make the unconnected subject connected. Disguised in the language of universal access, ubiquitous computing, and participatory engagement, the processes of connectivity presume only the binary positions of the subject who has to be connected. In this discourse, what is often undertheorised, or not even recognised is the idea of the disconnected subject – the subject who has been put into conditions of connectivity, and then is either disconnected through acts of censorship and control, or chooses to disconnect for personal reasons. The power of political disconnectedness, and the poetics of resistance that this reticence produces to our big data driven futures, needs to be examined, particularly in the face of growing control on political participation and action. Drawing from two case-studies of social movements in India and Hong Kong, this talk draws attention to the new forms of resistances and appropriations that emerge against the hypervisualised data subject of the contemporary moment. Bionote: Nishant Shah is a Guest Professor at the Institute for the Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media, Leuphana University, Germany, and the Dean-Research at ArtEZ university of the arts, The Netherlands.

Seventy years ago, at the end of the Second World War, Germany and the Korean Peninsula were divided. Yet, while the former has now been reunited for twenty five years, Korean reunification remains a distant prospect. Under what conditions could, then, unification happen? What steps are being taken right now to prepare for this possibility? And what lessons can we draw from the German experience of reunification? In order to answer these questions, we had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Bernhard Seliger. Dr. Seliger is since 2002 the resident representative in Seoul of the Hanns Seidel Foundation, which is associated with the German conservative party CSU. He is Associate Editor of the North Korean Review and serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Korean Journal of Unification Affairs. He was also a Guest Professor at Seoul National University’s Graduate School of Public Administration from 2004 to 2007. Dr. Seliger received his PhD from the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel. His doctoral dissertation was awarded the First Prize of the Wolfgang-Ritter Foundation.
