You can get your copy on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/194833433X?ref=exp_gcouros_dp_vv_d Here is the description from Amazon: What you do matters. You may not hear it often (or ever), but if you're an educator, you're making a difference in the lives of learners. And that impact has a domino effect. In Because of a Teacher, more than fifteen of today's leading educators remember the teachers and administrators who inspired and supported their careers. Through a series of heartfelt and uplifting stories, they reflect on their early years teaching, offering advice and strategies suited to first-year teachers and longtime educators alike. These personal stories offer hope for new teachers, encouragement for educators tiptoeing into burnout, and reassurance that the work you're doing right now will inspire generations to come. Because of a Teacher will inspire you to - remember those who encouraged your love of learning; - honor and thank educators who have advocated for you, championed your career, and equipped you with the skills necessary to lead; -reflect on how far you've come since you entered the profession. Endorsements “Whether you are in your first year of teaching or nearing your last, Because of a Teacher will remind you why you went into education in the first place and help us all focus on what is really important: the legacy we will leave with the students and staff we are blessed to work with.” —Allyson Apsey, principal and author of The Path to Serendipity “I would highly recommend this book to any educator I know!” —Morgane Michael, educational consultant and author of From Burnt Out to Fired Up! “Because of a Teacher is filled with voices from the field who remind us of the impact we can make with all students, even on our toughest days. If you are looking for an inspiring read to remind you why you went into the profession, this book is it.” —Jimmy Casas, educator, author, speaker, and leadership coach

You'd never know from the language in the intro clip to this episode, "humanity is contagious," that we recorded this conversation months before the pandemic hit North America. My guest this week is not psychic, but she is a teacher.Morgane Michael is an elementary school educator, professional development instructor, and podcast host. Her podcast KindSight 101 is about the mobilizing power of kindness in and out of the classroom. In fact, she was recently nominated for a Canadian Podcast Award!I had the great pleasure of being a guest on Morgane's show in the fall of 2019, and it was a true honor to flip the script. We talked about the difference between walking through the world as a teacher vs a podcaster, what's changed in education over the last decade, emotional regulation in kids and adults, how to connect with anyone, and of course Morgane shares two beautiful chance encounter stories. One that is thoroughly moving, and one that is sure to give you second-hand embarrassment. Now, remember, we recorded this months before the 2020 pandemic. Given the current state of education and the uncertainty over its future, this conversation may at times feel anachronistic. As a child, Brian suffered from a debilitating social and speech anxiety. He was bullied and mostly friendless through middle school. Though he loved magic tricks, he couldn’t muster the courage to perform for anyone. Brian got a fresh start in a new school for 9th grade, where he met another student who was also into magic. Through magic and friendship, Brian developed self-confidence for the very first time. Founding his business at the early age of 16, Brian worked as a professional magician while completing a dual Bachelor’s of Science in mathematics and philosophy, achieving a 4.0 in philosophy and receiving two international awards for presenting original work. He was accepted into a PhD program for Philosophy of Language, but turned it down in order to pursue a career in entertainment. Brian quickly found a following with college students on the national campus activities circuit, earning two nomination’s for “America’s Best Campus Artist” (Campus Activities Magazine) by the age of 24. As his act evolved, so did the demand for his work. Brian developed a reputation for mixing world class entertainment with an engaging personality and the ability to adapt to any group. He began accepting invitations to entertain at exclusive private events throughout New England, such as bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings, company holiday parties, and corporate events. Military Entertainment and More In April of 2016, Brian partnered with Navy Entertainment to bring magic to the American troops and their families stationed overseas on military bases. He has since completed 3 tours for the troops in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Brian calls these tours the most rewarding work of his career. Read about his most recent tour across Asia here. Brian’s work has been featured in the Hartford Courant, The Huffington Post, MAGIC Magazine, Genii Magazine, and The Society of American Magicians Magazine. He was also showcased in the 2016 documentary film The Get Together about the legendary Abbott’s Get Together magic convention held annually for the past 80 years in Colon, MI. Beyond Magic Brian’s experience as a magician make him a dynamic and engaging corporate keynote speaker and youth motivational speaker. His TEDx talk “How to Magically Connect with Anyone” has been seen and shared by 3 million people worldwide. Outside of magic Brian is a passionate musician. He has achieved critical acclaim as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter as half of the group Escher’s Enigma, a unique studio project with his father Russ Miller. Brian lives in Connecticut with his wife Lindsey.

If you are an educator, school administrator, parent, camp counsellor, or employer, chances are you've had experience with challenging behaviours. So often, we focus on crisis-management and behaviour-modification to attempt to make challenging behaviours "go away," but as we know, sticker charts and reward systems do little to encourage intrinsic motivation and, furthermore, do not address the underlying problems that cause the problematic behaviours.  I sat down with Dr. Ross Greene this summer to discuss his Collaborative and Proactive Solutions model in order to learn how we can solve some of the most challenging school behaviours.  Here are some things we discuss:  The Four Main Philosophies that guide Collaborative Proactive Solutions: Kids do well if they can.  Your explanation guides your intervention. Be responsible to the hand you've been dealt. Challenging behaviours occur when certain demands and expectations exceed a kid's ability to respond adaptively to their environment. It's a method of communication. Dr. Greene’s research has been funded by the US Department of Education, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Stanley Medical Research Institute, and the Maine Juvenile Justice Advisory Group. This episode is about the importance of building a connection with parents and families, how we can address challenges & some examples of ways to involve them in their child’s schooling. Parents are the foremost teachers of their children. They are an important resource and should always feel welcome at your school and involved in it as much as possible. Think of your connections with parents as a partnership where you are working together to support their child’s development & learning. A child’s academic success in school is greatly enhanced with these strong partnerships. Please keep in mind as I share my experiences & ideas much of it may differ to your school situation. Factors such as the school demographics, its size, socioeconomic background, school policies & procedures and the culture of your families all play a part in the home to school connection. I wish to be inclusive of all adults who are responsible for a child, regardless if they are the child’s parent or not, but never the less the primary caregiver. For the sake of wording for this podcast I clustered family & all carers together under the heading parents. Part of Being a teacher is problem solving, including situations where parents are challenging. The podcast covers a sample of strategies for these situations and various ways to communicate with parents. I am very grateful for the insightful contributions from Morgane Michael who reminds us of parent’s perspective Morgane can be found on social media @smallactbigimpact on Instagram & Facebook & @SAB121days on Twitter Effective communication is essential for building the school and family partnership. By working together, we strengthen the connection. Several examples are included Parents make a difference. Positive connections and partnerships between school and families, parents & teachers play an important role in children’s learning, development and wellbeing. Whichever methods you incorporate to build connections, the important goal is to keep communication between the parents and teacher open, to work together and support each other to provide the best environment and opportunities for children to be their best. Together we are better.

I remember a particularly challenging student I had who must have experienced nothing but negative interactions throughout his day. He would literally arrive at school buzzing and had such a difficult time settling into any routine. He was disruptive. He struggled academically. He could be very rude. He had a soft heart with rock hard armour and he would launch into fight-mode so as to preemptively ward off perceived threats at the drop of a hat. The cumulative daily burden of the chastising by his parents and family, thwarted peer-to-peer connections, and the negative comments coming from teachers and principals must have been a heavy load to bear by the time this boy went to sleep at night. It often weighed heavily on me that I could be contributing to his negative self-concept with my own demands on his behavior. I couldn’t help but think about the compounding negative effects of his mostly negative exchanges day-over-day, week-over-week, month-over-month, and year-over- year. No wonder so many of our struggling, at-risk students lose their curious spark and love of life by the time they leave us in Grade 12. So many of them have received consistent messages telling them that no matter how hard they try, they will never be good enough, never measure up, never amount to anything. What if there was an easy solution? Listen to this short episode about the magical nature of the 5:1 ratio we should all be employing to amplify our relationships.
