After losing his beloved cat of 19 years,  Eddie, Antonio just wasn't in the right headspace to record. He shares how much Eddie meant to both him and his late wife, and why saying goodbye was so tough. For the rerun, Antonio picks a special episode from  October 2022, when Ward visited New York, and they recorded together in person right after seeing the Bernd and Hilla Becher exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's a meaningful conversation and a reminder of how photography, friendship, and life's hard moments are all connected. Thomas Ruff talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work.Ruff was born in 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach, in what was then West Germany, and has, over five decades, extensively probed the forms and possibilities of photography. Though he is a key figure in the international generation of artists that emerged in the 1980s and experimented with the very nature of the photographic medium and discipline, Ruff has carved out a singular practice. He works in distinct series whose formal characteristics vary enormously, but are underpinned by experimental unorthodoxy, technical curiosity and conceptual rigour. Each new group contributes to a profound philosophical exploration of the photographic image and what it means to make a picture. But while the intellectual underpinning of his work is unwavering, Thomas makes prints that are remarkably beautiful objects. Operating in a medium that remains associated with the factual record and documentary, he has relentlessly made the case for a photographic practice in which imagination is a primary agent. He discusses his interest in “the puzzle of photography”, the distinctive geneses of his various series of work, and his conviction that while seeking an “intellectually high-end product… of course I want to have fun”. He reflects on the early influence of the photographer Ernst Haas, how Piero della Francesca influenced his early Portraits series, how he chose to study art over astronomy, yet outer space has remained a core concern in his work, and how the satirical television show Spitting Image proved an unlikely influence. Of course, he reflects on the work of numerous photographers, from Eugène Atget and Walker Evans to Lou Landauer and his teachers in Düsseldorf, Bernd and Hilla Becher. Nuno Crespo nasceu em Lisboa em 1975. É licenciado e doutorado em filosofia pela Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Marcus talks about repetition in this show. Repetition was a core part of the five Rs show which you can listen to here. Marcus has recently been to a Martin Parr talk. What Marcus found is that Martin has done huge amounts of fashion photography, which he wasn't very aware of. Marcus explains that this is partly because he does what Marcus talked about in another recent episode alternative genres. To recap the previous episode the 5 rules of creativity in photography are Research Rules Repetition Reflection Rest   Marcus in this show focusses on repetition. Repetition splits down into three areas Learning Improving Diversifying Learning If you are learning photography, it is best to photograph things that you can go back to again and again. So something at the bottom of the garden rather that what you see on holiday. This also means you are focussing on the mundane, so you have to try to make it interesting. Marcus says take a picture, look at it reflect on it, then take it again. Keeping repeating, reflecting and learning. Marcus says this idea works just as well for more experienced photographers. Marcus thinks this is a great way to get to know your kit and getting to know shutter speeds, apertures and more.   ImprovingIf you are an improving photographer you want to go an photograph things multiple times. Thinking about varied weather, varied times of day, varied lighting conditions. Marcus says when you repeat things you are growing the connections in your brain. But it's important that critical reflection is combined with repetition. Diversifying There is a style of photography where photographers photograph something again and again in a very similar way, this is called Typology. Bernt and Hilla Becher, Thomas Struth, Lewis Baltz are all photographers who have used this. They tend to photograph a series of photos of something similar. Edward Munch's the Scream is a block print that works in a similar way. As a photography example the Bechers were photographing gas tanks over time. Years apart but from the same position and with the same weather so they are very similar shots.

Elle veut aussi mettre en évidence le processus de reconnaissance de la photographie comme forme d'expression artistique en Allemagne et en Europe à partir des années 1970.Comme Bernd et Hilla Becher, Michael Schmidt fait partie des photographes d'après-guerre les plus influents. Il a inlassablement développé son oeuvre durant cinq décennies. À travers les publications de ses travaux sous forme de livres et d'installations toujours en dialogue avec leur lieu d'exposition, il a mis au point différents types de présentation novateurs. Par l'incessant renouvellement de son langage formel et par le choix de ses thèmes, Michael Schmidt a écrit un volet de l'histoire de la photographie et est aujourd'hui un modèle pour toute une génération de jeunes photographes.Né à Berlin le 6 octobre 1945, c'est dans cette ville qu'il vit et travaille jusqu'à sa mort en 2014. Cet autodidacte travaille comme photographe à partir du milieu des années 1970, tout d'abord exclusivement dans sa ville natale. C'est là qu'ont vu le jour les séries consacrées à Kreuzberg et Wedding – deux arrondissements de Berlin-Ouest –, lesquelles vont déjà au-delà de la simple description d'un quartier, prenant un sens plus large. C'est avec le projet de livre et d'exposition développé en collaboration avec le metteur en scène et dramaturge Einar Schleef, Waffenruhe (Cessez-le feu), présenté tout d'abord à Berlin en 1987, que Michael Schmidt réalise un travail indéniablement artistique.Cette série constituée d'images brutes, à l'atmosphère chargée, dessine un portrait très personnel de la ville à la fin de la guerre froide – et de sa jeunesse –, une ville encore coupée en deux, peu avant le changement d'époque.Michael Schmidt abandonne cette concentration sur l'univers thématique de Berlin avec la série Ein-heit (Uni-té), dans laquelle il explore les langages visuels des différentes formes de société et des différents systèmes politiques qui ont marqué l'Allemagne au XXe siècle. Il utilise à cette occasion des images déjà médiatisées qu'il mêle à des photographies prises par lui-même, publiant le tout dans un livre sans texte. La première exposition de cette série est orginasée en 1996 au Museum of Modern Art, à New York.Schmidt a été ainsi le premier photographe allemand depuis des décennies à bénéficier d'une exposition personnelle en ce lieu. Par la suite, il consacre d'autres travaux à l'image de la femme telle que revendiquée par celle-ci, au rôle des régions et à l'importance de la nature. Sa dernière grande série, Lebensmittel (Denrées alimentaires), dans laquelle il explore la production alimentaire contemporaine, lui a valu d'obtenir le prix Pictet quelques jours seulement avant sa mort.L'exposition « Michael Schmidt. Une autre photographie allemande» est organisée par la Stiftung für Fotografie und Medienkunst mit Archiv Michael Schmidt et la collaboration du Jeu de Paume pour sa présentation à Paris. On branche les micros, je m’installe sur une chaise beaucoup trop basse pour moi. J’appuie sur le bouton record. Le photographe commence à raconter l’histoire de l’une de ses photos tirées de son projet L’attente. Dès les premières minutes, je sens chez mon invité une véritable passion pour l’image et une envie très forte de partager. C’est un « raconteur d’histoires ». ­Je souris intérieurement.  Pour ce treizième Vision, c’est avec un grand plaisir que nous recevons Alexandre Guirkinger, photographe parisien né en 1980. Après des études à l’IEP de Lille et un passage comme chargé de production au sein de l’agence Magnum Photos, Alexandre Guirkinger décide de se consacrer au medium photographique en 2006.  Il développe une écriture protéiforme entre espace, portraits, natures mortes et images d’archives. Sa photographie, uniquement argentique, oblige à une certaine frugalité à la prise de vue. À partir de 2010, il produit des pièces collaboratives avec, par exemple, Étienne Chambaud, Tristan Garcia, Florence Aubenas ou Tarek Atoui. Parallèlement, il développe des recherches personnelles s’apparentant au documentaire conceptuel. En 2015, il met un terme à son projet au long cours autour de la ligne Maginot, exposé aux Rencontres d’Arles en 2016 et publié chez RVB Books­­­.  Alexandre Guirkinger est également représenté par l’agence Rose à Paris. On episode 11, Melissa talks with fellow Appalachian Trail thru-hiker, photographer, writer, farmer and good friend, Sarah Jones Decker, also known as “Harvest.” Sarah’s new book, The Appalachian Trail: Backcountry Shelters, Lean-tos, and Huts was published earlier this year by Rizzoli, which highlights all of the shelters on the entire Appalachian trail with beautiful photography and facts, and to which Melissa contributed over 40 images. If you’ve spent any overnight in the woods along the AT or elsewhere on the east coast, then you’ve probably come across a lean-to or two which are 3-sided structures with pitched roofs, set up in the backcountry to give hikers a place to rest or shelter from a storm. If you’ve listened to this podcast in the past, you may recognize Harvest’s voice from Girl Gotta Hike The Podcast, Episode 1. You may also know that Melissa loves the way ideas get sparked and conversations flow when hiking alongside someone. But due to this year’s travel restrictions and the fact that Sarah lives in North Carolina, an in-person recording seemed almost impossible. Instead of settling for sitting still though, Melissa decided to experiment and send Sarah a microphone and recorder so they could continue to walk together while chatting on the phone. The result? A super fun and insightful conversation about photography, the artistic process, the trials of taking photos while backpacking and the tenacity it took to dedicate over two years of her life to photograph all of the 270-plus shelters along the Appalachian Trail for her 10 year thru-hiking Trailversary. Das New Yorker Museum of Modern Art bietet im Netz einen kostenlosen englischen Fotokurs an. In sechs Lehrabschnitten kann man sich das Wissen anhand von Videos und Interviews aneignen. Die New York Public Library hat tausende von Copyright-freien Fotos im Internet veröffentlicht. Diese bieten einen interessanten Einblick in die Vergangenheit, die man vielleicht nur als Büchern oder alten Filmen kennt. Die Fotos stehen jedermann kostenlos zur Verfügung. Der Amerikaner William Nelson entdeckt durch Zufall eine Bildsammlung aus dem Jahr 1904 die touristische Ziele in ganz Europa zeigt. Seit gut 25 Jahren versucht Nelson nun den Namen des Fotografen ausfindig zu machen. Eine Liste bedeutender Fotografen haben wir bei Wikipedia ausfindig gemacht. C'est marrant, parce que ce morceau, je le connaissais sans savoir que c'était du groupe allemand Neu! J'étais persuadée que c'était un truc du genre New York No Wave ! Pas du (sauer)krautrock. "«Estructuras repetitivas» es el título de la exposición que se presenta en la Fundación Juan March a partir del próximo 12 de diciembre. Bajo este rótulo se ha reunido un total de 22 obras de 21 artistas contemporáneos, de diferentes estilos y tendencias, todas ellas pertenecientes al Museo Ludwig de Colonia (Alemania). Las obras tienen como denominador común presentar una repetición de elementos. Así podrán contemplarse desde óleos sobre lienzo y otros cuadros de técnica mixta que incorporan gran variedad de materiales, a dibujos, fotografías y esculturas. La exposición, organizada con la colaboración del Museo Ludwig, estará abierta en la Fundación hasta el 16 de febrero próximo. En ella podrá contemplarse una obra de cada uno de los artistas representados (a excepción de Andy Warhol, con tres obras). Gran parte de ellas fueron realizadas en los años sesenta, siendo la más antigua de todas las que ofrece la muestra un óleo de Robert Delaunay, de 1934, y la más reciente, la composición del norteamericano Jim Dine, realizada en 1983. En cuanto a las esculturas, además de un bronce de Josef Beuys, de 1958, figuran cuatro de artistas vinculados al «Minimal Art», como Andre, Judd, LeWitt y Morris.
