In 2023, leading nonprofit organizations are undertaking the essential and challenging task of scrutinizing their operational strategies through the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) lens. Big questions remain, particularly regarding racial equity and its intersection with the missions we champion, the positions we advocate, the donors we prioritize, and even the composition of our workforce. And our small world of peer-to-peer fundraising is no different. Our peer-to-peer fundraising events present a unique opportunity to translate these principles into action - in our capacity to unite individuals from diverse backgrounds around a common cause, in the role our events play as a mirror reflecting the broader community we serve, and in our commitment to dismantling barriers that might hinder potential supporters from connecting with our mission. In this episode, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America's Chief Development Officer, Deb Barge, joins P2PPF's Marcie Maxwell for an important conversation about the critical need to prioritize the principles of JEDI in peer-to-peer fundraising work. Growing up as a gay man in a conservative community, Vic Sorrell knew firsthand what it felt like to be ostracized for being true to himself. Early on in his career, Vic landed a job that worked closely with the HIV crisis. After realizing that HIV disproportionately impacts people of color, Vic dedicated his life to Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI). Today, Vic works as an international holistic coach and is committed to educating people of all races, genders, religions and sexual orientations on how they can make a positive impact in their communities.  When we think about white supremacy, we tend to think of extremist groups. While these groups are rooted in racism, most people in America unconsciously participate in white supremacy.  Even though many people are well-intentioned, their focus tends to be on their contribution rather than healing the issue itself. Vic defines this phenomenon as “nice racism,” and he explains that it does more harm than good. It is not enough just to be anti-racist; instead, you have to put in selfless work on an everyday basis. Whether it is through reading books or googling popular terms, Vic would tell anybody that is interested in being an ally that they need to do the research themselves.  It can take seven generations to dissipate trauma, so it is crucial now more than ever that we all band together to mend the gaps in our societies. Tune into this week's episode of Southern Soul Live Stream to learn the real definition of white supremacy, how to leverage your privilege to instill change, and how literature became the catalyst of Vic's journey to allyship.    Quotes • “People who are white often focus more on their contribution – what they're doing out of the goodness of their hearts to help others who are somehow not the same as they see themselves. A lot of times when you're in that space and your focus is your contribution and what you're doing, instead of what you're learning and investing in yourself and your education, then what inevitably happens is you end up doing more harm than good. Because you get in certain spaces where you don't know how your mere presence as a white person is a trigger and a discomfort.” (12:12-13:19) • “The dynamics around the inequities that relate to race in our country and in our world are so nuanced and so insidious that you could talk about multiple different scenarios on a daily basis the rest of your life and never never get them all.” (19:50-20:11) • “All of us have been socialized in a society where white lives have continued to be, in many cases, more valued than black and brown lives.”(20:19-20:34)  • “It can take up to seven generations for some of the compounded trauma to dissipate.” (21:02-21:11) • “We think white supremacy is extreme, right? [Extremist group] type behavior, that's white supremacy. But in truth, white supremacy is simply the belief, whether conscious or unconscious, that whiteness is superior and is supreme.” (24:30-24:59) • “White supremacy is so unconsciously dominant for most white people.”(27:40-27:47)   Links Connect with Vic Sorrell: • http://vicsorrell.com/ • https://www.instagram.com/vicsorrell/   Connect with Southern Soul Live Stream: • Want to listen to our next episode live?  “When we're thinking about regenerative capital, we're combining what philanthropy did, but we're also looking to grow that philanthropic pool, so we can do more. That's where we start building a better world for us all.” -David Cooper   “Fundraising is the hardest part of entrepreneurship. If they have the capital sooner, they would be executing because entrepreneurs, by and large, are doers.” -Maggie Spicer   When it comes to social enterprise investing, raising awareness among investors and entrepreneurs is essential.  Impact investing is a general investment strategy that seeks to generate financial returns while also creating a positive social or environmental impact. Investors who follow impact investing consider a company's commitment to corporate social responsibility or the duty to positively serve society as a whole.  The bulk of impact investing is done by institutional investors, including hedge funds, private foundations, banks, pension funds, and fund managers.  Yet, a range of financial service companies, investment platforms and investor networks now offer individuals an opportunity to participate.  One major venue is microfinance loans, which provide small-business owners in emerging nations with startup or expansion capital. Women are often the beneficiaries of such loans.     In this episode Justine talks with David Cooper, Senior Partner and Donor Advisor of DAF Capital and Maggie Spicer, Partner and COO, DAF Capital. Donor-Advised Funds (DAF) are one form of investment vehicle.  David and Maggie explain impact investments and charitable capital investments through Donor-Advised Funds. Since the pandemic, DAF Capital along with 86Fund raised $120,000 to help 119 businesses.  The 86Fund is a 501c3-sponsored, DAF-backed philanthropic venture fund that provided grants to U.S.-based restaurants and restaurant-adjacent small businesses (farmers, wine + beer makers, bakers, fishermen/women, etc.) impacted by the global pandemic and/or climate change.  In this episode, David and Maggie also talk about frameworks that have the same goals such as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG); Sustainable Development Goals (SDG); and Justice, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI-nope, not the Star Wars movie!). These and other similar frameworks are promising and POSSIBLE.    Connect with David Cooper: David serves as DAF Capital's Senior Partner specializing in the details of unlocking DAF capital. He has 20+ years of experience directing the acquisition, financing, ownership, and disposition of early-stage companies. He brings deep knowledge of equity transactions including due diligence, structuring, closing, and operational management. He and his associates make investments that match risk with returns and reconnect investors with the performance of the companies they invest in, selecting companies in need of financing that make a positive impact in the world—without sacrificing returns.  And he has the track record to prove it.   David is a managing member of his family's clean technology fund West Coast CleanTech (WCTT), founded on the belief that the confluence of economic, social, and environmental factors driving rapid technological change in green technologies offers positive investment opportunities. David is a board member of the Baja Coastal Institute, a nonprofit organization devoted to regional environmental and socioeconomic research throughout Baja, Mexico.   LinkedIn   Connect with Maggie Spicer: Maggie serves as a Partner at DAF Capital to enable and inspire more people to use their Donor-Advised Funds in different ways than they would traditionally think.   She's spent her career starting and building innovative companies, typically as a hybrid CEO/COO/CCO. She is the founder and Chief Operating Officer of WHISK, the brand strategy & kinesthetic experience agency trusted by Airbnb, Twitch, IDEO, Levi Strauss & Co., Github, Square, Salesforce, Tesco, Zendesk, and many others.   In tandem to WHISK, Maggie has launched six businesses in the last decade including 86Fund, a $12M DAF fund to aid SF Bay Area restaurants experiencing economic hardship. What do you think is the business case for equity, diversity and inclusion? In business, or even not for profit, should morality or humanitarian reasons play a role? Or should it strictly be about profit and shareholder value?I have some opinions on this, which I apply in my work as an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategist. But as a podcaster, I've tried to keep the focus on my guests' perspectives, until one of my guests asked to switch places with me. Ali Ahmed, whom you heard in the previous episode, wanted to hear my experiences as a recruiter, HR director and not-for-profit executive. So in this episode, Ali will host me. And I give some pretty blunt opinions about many business systems that we've taken for granted, which are structurally set up to discriminate and exclude. And it's not because they're racist or misogynist or anything related specifically to people. The sad thing is, systemic discrimination is also rooted in capitalism. If you're wondering how that happens, tune in to this episode. Welcome! My name is Rosie Yeung, and I'm here to help people with privilege dismantle systemic inequity, while helping people without privilege survive it.This isn't just a podcast about JEDI, which stands for Justice, Equity, Decolonization and Inclusion. Changing Lenses was inspired by Rene August, a decolonization educator from South Africa. She describes bias and worldview using this analogy:“If I looked at a drop of water through a microscope and magnified it by 100, I would see something completely different to what I see in my hand. But I would still be looking at a drop of water! Our lens determines what we see, not just what we're looking at.”Our mission in Changing Lenses is to envision a more JEDI way to work and do business by seeing from diverse worldviews. Because in our capitalistic Western societies, companies look at people through a business lens. But if employers sincerely want to be equitable, diverse and inclusive, I believe they need to see people as human beings, not human resources. In this podcast trailer, you'll learn how Changing Lenses started, and why I went from being a corporate executive upholding systemic inequity to JEDI coach, keynote speaker, and warrior. You can find free JEDI resources and ways to get in touch on my website, changinglenses.ca; and on Instagram @rosieyeung_jedi.Land AcknowledgementEach episode is hosted on colonized land that was taken from many Indigenous nations, including the Anishinaabe, the Huron-Wendat, the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Today it is still the home of many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis people, with whom I seek to reconcile by learning the true history of colonization, including things that seemed legal and honourable – like treaties – but were often marked by fraud and coercion.I'm Changing my Lens by learning to see land, creation, even business and economy through Indigenous worldviews. And I'm making new friends and building relationships with Indigenous neighbours, cousins, aunties and uncles, in a genuine desire to know, love, and honour them, and live together in peace. This podcast is one way I'm sharing what I learn to help settler-immigrant folks decolonize our thinking, and respond to the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.Miigwetch, 多謝, 謝謝, Merci, and Thank You.Full transcript is available here. References and resources in this episode:"Dare to Lead" official glossary: https://daretolead.brenebrown.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Glossary-of-Key-Language-Skills-and-Tools-from-DTL.pdfQuote from "Dare to Lead" on Perspective Taking: https://connectonline.blog/2020/06/20/perspective-taking/
