Tyndall researcher awarded €1.58 million from the renowned funding body, European Research Council (ERC), to support his groundbreaking research. IPIC, the SFI Centre for Photonics based at Tyndall National Institute (a research flagship of University College Cork), is pleased to announce that Dr Sanathana Konugolu Venkata Sekar has been awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. The grant, worth €1.58m, will support Dr Konugolu Venkata Sekar's groundbreaking research project NOBIAS: "Novel diffuse Optical method to combat skin colour bias in non-invasive optical biomarker sensing devices". Skin colour bias in optical healthcare devices affects 2.2 billion people of colour worldwide. Dr Konugolu's project, NOBIAS, aims to develop a revolutionary Time Domain Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy (TDDOS) method to eliminate colour bias, motion artefacts and inaccuracies in optical biomarker devices such as pulse oximeters (used to measure oxygen levels in blood) and smartwatches. This pioneering technology will address the critical need for more accurate and equitable medical diagnostics by focusing on the influence of skin pigmentation, variations in skin layer thickness, and composition across different ethnicities. The goal is to create a bias-free foundation for optical biomarker assessments that will enable a new era of accurate optical biomarker sensors for fitness and clinical bedside monitors. The prestigious ERC Starting Grants, awarded by Europe's leading research funding body, are designed to support emerging research leaders in building their independent teams and conducting pioneering research with the potential for significant global impact. Speaking about his work, Dr Konugolu explains: "My goal with the NOBIAS project is to lay the foundation for the world's first bias-free and accurate optical biomarker sensing device, and our hope is that its legacy will be the gold standard for bias-free clinical and personal biomarkers sensing". Professor Paul Townsend, Head of Photonics, Tyndall and Director of IPIC, said: "Dr Konugolu has consistently impressed me with his passion and commitment to the generation of new ideas and knowledge, as well as his ability to commercialise those ideas to realise new medical technologies that will benefit society in the future. This significant award confirms his outstanding potential as a world-leading biophotonics researcher, and I am confident the project will lead to new innovations that will be very impactful for the field". Welcoming the news, Martin O'Connell, EU Programme Manager at IPIC, said: "ERC grants are among the most prestigious of any funding body worldwide, and the successful award is a testament to the research excellence consistently on display on an ongoing basis in IPIC."

In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (2024), from writers Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the film is directed by Shawn Levy.   The long awaited third installment in the Deadpool franchise finds Deadpool/Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) on a mission to save his corner of the multiverse from destruction, but he needs the help of a reluctant Wolverine (Hugh Jackman reprising his role) to get it done.  A cornucopia of cameos are littered throughout, has callbacks to the LOKI Disney+ show and leans heavily into the violence, more so than in any previous Marvel property.  The film clocks in at 2 h and 8 m, is rated R and is currently still playing in theaters.

The first episode of RTE’s 10 Things to Know About new series, which aired last night (Monday), featured important research into the science of light that is being undertaken in Cork at SFI’s Irish Photonics Integrated Centre (IPIC) based at Tyndall National Institute. Cork scientist Kathriona Devereux found out how the power of light (bioluminescence) is driving new medical technologies, such as the use of fluorescence in cancer diagnosis, and infra-red light technologies to monitor the lung function of premature babies. Commenting, IPIC Centre Director Paul Townsend, “We were delighted to showcase some of the innovative technologies being developed at IPIC on 10 Things to Know About. Taylor is a single gal from West Seattle who is looking for someone new. We introduce her to two nice local guys - Country Boy Henry from Kent and City Boy Tim from Redmond – and they need to be on their game because Taylor works in HR so she knows a lot about human nature! Henry is a personal trainer and is an out-doorsy type but since the weather might be dicey he suggests an “indoor” outdoor activity and so wants to go to iFly for some skydiving! Being a Country Boy he also loves his BBQ and suggests heading over to Famous Dave’s afterwards and after that maybe some fun hole-in-the-wall bars. City Boy Tim works for Microsoft and says he enjoys the “finer things in life” but he really wants to embrace Friday the 13th! He suggests going to the iPic movie to see “It Chapter 2”. And he says afterward they will hit Molly Moons for some ice cream and if the clouds clear a bit, they can check out the Harvest Moon! Taylor asks some good questions which leads to some discussion about faith, family, and, um, fragrance. So which guy will she pick? And which form of terror: skydiving or clowns?

Welcome to series 1 episode 6 of the Your App Lady Podcast! I am Betsy Furler and I am Your App Lady. I am a wife, mother to two boys, a Product Designer, business owner and speech pathologist. I’m also an app addict. Join me as I talk about my favorite subject: Apps.  And I may also occasionally talk about my kids, my work and the rest of my life. On each episode, I’ll talk about recent tech news, recommend apps that I use myself and leave you with a great tech tip. On today’s show: one of my favorite apps that helps keep track of medical records, appointments and medications. Tech News The Best Smart Kitchen Appliances of 2018 For more information: https://www.pcmag.com/roundup/352512/the-best-smart-kitchen-appliances The Perfect Bake Pro and Perfect Drink Pro scales and apps allow you to precisely follow recipes and measure ingredients. There are smart refrigerators like the LG SmartThinQ Fridge that lets you see inside your refrigerator from your phone! There are smart coffee makers, thermometers, ice makers and more. To see all the reviews, go to this article. App of the Week: CareSync By CareSync Available for iPhone, iPad, Android and on the web. CareSync is one of my very favorite apps, which helps you organize your family’s medical records. The app is free, but I choose to pay for some of the premium features to manage my son’s medical information. The paid version allows CareSync to gather, summarize, and organize records and make these records accessible from any device or computer. My son has a life-threatening medical condition and has been hospitalized over 100 times.  It is vital he has his medical history and records with him at all times. He’s now in college and lives in a dorm. CareSync has allowed him to be this independent! He simply pulls up the app and hands it to the EMTs or doctor, which enables them to treat him appropriately. The app also stores medication names and dosages and has a medication reminder feature. All records are searchable and are arranged in an easy-to-read timeline. Tech Tip How to charge your phone faster. Your phone will charge much faster if it is not searching for WiFi or receiving texts, notifications and phone calls. Do this by turning your phone all the way off. If you don’t want to turn off the phone, put it on airplane mode. For more great tips: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/a38725/secret-iphone-tips-and-tricks/ Bonus App I use the AMC app and iPic app to buy movie tickets. It’s so easy to buy tickets and choose seats via the apps! Go find the app for your favorite theater and go to see The Greatest Showman! We arrived to the IPic theater, and followed the signs up the escalators to The Tuck Room. Adam pulled a book, pivoting it from its bottom corner, and the entire bookshelf revealed itself to be a door, opening to an expansive, magical “green room.” If you’ve had a cocktail, you have benefited from the influence of Dale DeGroff. He goes by the well-deserved moniker of King Cocktail, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that his work and his writings have directly or indirectly influenced every working bartender out there today. Adam Seger is a remarkable barman, connector and educator with a knack for bringing elegant and sophisticated presentations forward in an adventurous and comfortable way. It was a pleasure to talk to them both about cocktails, over cocktails.
