Today we’re back at it in the Old Masters Series. We’re going to talk about how to make a fortune during a recession. Now a lot of people think now is the worst time to make a lot of money, but it all depends on your perspective. People who are good at spotting opportunities learn how to adjust the way they look at things depending upon the environment. When the storm clouds of recession and depression show up, they use it to their advantage. Not to take advantage of helpless people, but to recognize the opportunities in the changed circumstances. Bill Benton was such a man. He was 30 years old when the Great Depression hit in 1929, but he didn’t let that get in his way of becoming a millionaire by age 35. He saved companies with his unique ad strategies. And he even bought one for peanuts that later was earning him $2 million a year. Now let’s talk about you. Times are tough and you have to make a choice — do you want to go along with the doom and gloom thinking of the naysayers, or see this as a legitimate opportunity? Now, to be sure, things aren’t easy and right now a lot of people are in such bad shape that they can’t take advantage of opportunities, or create new ones. If that’s you, I understand. But if you even see a glimmer of possibility for building business during hard times, today we’re going to look at someone who did it and see what lessons we can draw from his amazing story — and use today. That person is Bill Benton. He founded his own ad agency just before the great crash of 1929, and emerged very wealthy and powerful, right in the middle of the Great Depression. In an interview Studs Terkel’s great book “Hard Times,” Benton refers to what his friend the economist Beardley Ruml said: “In all catastrophes, there is the potential of benefit.” We’ll look at how you can do that in today’s show. I’ve boiled down what I’ve learned to five principles of how Bill Benton did so well during the Great Depression, and we take a deep dip into each one: They are: 1) Ignore the doom and gloom 2) Feet on the ground, eyes on the future 3) Use the power of great content to multiply the results from advertising 4) Make direct response advertising your foundation, not your skyscape 5) Imagination really is more powerful than knowledge — but first you gotta have the knowledge. Hey, a big hello from Portland, Oregon. Welcome to another episode of B2B Marketing & More with Pam. I have a special guest today. Moni Oloyede. She’s Operations Manager for Fidelis Security. And this is a cyber security firm that sells cyber security and end-point solutions. So we are going to talk about our favorite topics, marketing, marketing operations, and also guess what? MarTech and how to build a MarTech stack for Account Based Marketing. So that's get started. Moni, welcome to the show! Moni Oloyede: Thanks for having me. Pam Didner: Yeah, I know that you asked me a Senior Marketing Operations Manager. And, uh, can you tell a little bit about yourself, uh, in terms of what you do and your experience. Love, love to hear that. Moni Oloyede: Absolutely. Thanks for having me appreciate it, Pam. Um, so I have been in the marketing technology space, my entire career. So almost 13 years, um, I got into it around say 2007ish, very early on in the start of the dawn of marketing technology platform. So some of the common ones you think of today are like Eloqua, Marketo, HubSpot, right? Yeah. And, and, uh, so I started at a cyber security company right out of college and they were early adopter of the platform. So they were doing a lot of like lead scoring and nurturing before that was even like coin terms. Um, so I got to learn very quickly and, uh, went on to consult, done consulting. So I got to see different environments B2B, B2C, large, medium and small. So that was a great learning for me. I did that for three years. That was awesome. And then it was just the travel. I just, I loved all my clients. It was great work I just how I was on the road all the time. So I came back in-house and more in-house marketing and just, you know, but helping companies build, you know, these marketing technology platforms. It's a very large undertaking. A lot of companies get into with the best of intentions and then I'm sure you've seen it, it just go sour at some point. So helping them get the processes right and put it on track is what I've been doing since then. Pam Didner: Awesome. Awesome. So MarTech marketing technology, stack and account-based marketing. Before we can dive that a little bit more. Can you tell us your definition of account-based marketing? Moni Oloyede: Yeah, absolutely. So this is one of my favorite things to do, too, because if you ever started a, an account based marketing strategy, just go around and ask the different people in the organization, what it means you're going to get 50,000 different answers. Pam Didner: Yep, yep. Moni Oloyede: A thousand percent. Um, so my definition starts with the definition of marketing, right? Definition marketing, simply put--communication of value. So, uh, account based marketing to me is that it's the communication of value to in-market or a target audience, basically. Pam Didner: So what do you mean by in-market? Moni Oloyede: So in-market means to meet people who you either know suspect, or have a, uh, an idea that they are actually actively looking for your products or solutions. Right. So that's the difference? In my opinion, it's just like, yes, marketing is marketing to your target market. That's part of the definition of it. But account-based is identifying those accounts or people who are actively looking to purchase something that you buy or sell. Pam Didner: Yeah. So with that being said, do you think it's important that, um, because you will, you own to identify a specific people or, uh, accounts that you need to align that with a salespeople first or your sales organization? Moni Oloyede: I think so. Definitely. That's your starting place for sure. Um, but what often happens is what sales thinks is their target is when you get into the account based marketing, you feel like you learned this, like there are other accounts that we didn't even think of that could be this, right? So that's the other thing that comes in with it. But yes, sales alignment is definitely kind of number one place to start as far as trying to get, uh, an idea of who your, your ideal customer profile is. Pam Didner: Got it. So when you tried to bill the MarTech stack, while you want to build, um, kind of like a marketing technology to support, uh, different stages of the customer engagement, many marketer's been doing the ABM for a while and, um, they are using different marketing channels, for example. Some people, are probably leveraging email campaigns and some, probably doing a lot of customer events. Do you think you can build kind of like a one MarTech stack to support all channels? And what is your, uh, point of view in terms of, um, evaluating MarTech or a different, uh, platform? What is the best way to set up kind of like a Martech stack. I know a lot of people are curious about that. And so you'll love to hear your thoughts. Moni Oloyede: Yeah. It's a great question. And I say, uh, no, you can't have one tool or technology that's gonna cover all of your channels. I actually advise you don't do that. Why do I say that? So one of the issues that marketers run into with marketing technology is they don't treat it like technology (laughs). So when you have a platform or solution, you're supposed to use that solution for what it was meant for, right? This is like technology basis, right? A lot of marketers want to get in there and start adding other features onto these technologies. And then they slow down and then they break and it does something you don't expect and you have more problems than you were expecting. So the number one thing I say is use the technology for what it was meant for, right? If you have an email marketing platform, you should be email marketing with that platform not doing lead assignment to sales. It can do that, but it's not what it was meant for. So then that's going to bog down your system and that's something you have to manage that's taking away from doing good email marketing. So that's how I, like, I just get back to the basics and simplify it. So, and then, so I guess the better question I think from, from my point of view is how do you build the stack? Right? So what pieces do you put in place in how you put it all together? So you normally start with like a main, your centerpiece kind of technology that everything's going to build around. So when a marketing— Pam Didner: So what are the centerpiece technology that everything should build around? What, what are like one or two, like centerpiece that, uh, that each company should have? Moni Oloyede: So in a marketing automation like this typical marketing tech, you think of it's your, your marketing automation platforms--this is your Eloqua and Marketo or HubSpot, that's your centerpiece. And a CRM solution this would be your Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics, something like that. And then, an account-based marketing tool would be like a Demandbase or Terminus or something like that. Can you have all three of these at the same time? Yes. But something has to be the centerpiece because you need a database of record per se, right, something that overrides something else. So that's often the organization with that. Is normally the CRM because so many people in the organization use that one tool. Um, but that's how you kind of have to start thinking about like, what's my centerpiece tool? And then what does that do? What does that purpose and then fill in the gaps with the other technologies. Because lots of people get like, um, they'll get, uh, a marketing automation platform and then like another like content platform and another like tracking platform. It's like. Well, then you have overlapping uses, right? This technology does this and this. So why do I need it's like, it's doing one thing, but I have overlapping uses for, they both do the same thing, essentially. Like a lot of technologies will send, have an email sending thing. Like I don't need four of those. I have the one. So what am I using this other tool for outside of just this? So that's how you kinda start to evaluate how to build the stack. The other thing of building a stack that you have to seriously take into consideration is who's managing it. That's the number one thing. Who's monitoring this on a day to day? Because then it's a technology. It's a evolving ,breathing thing, right, as we know. Software updates, constantly learning if it's a new feature functionality all the time. So if you don't have someone who's wanting to keep up with that and learn that I highly advise you don't get it because again, it's going to bog you down more than it's going to help you execute good marketing. Pam Didner: When you say monitoring, let me be a little bit clear. Um, Is it, somebody needs to managing it, does that mean that you have to assign the owner who actually owns that specific centerpiece? Moni Oloyede: 100% somebody has to own this because there's going to have to be decisions made around the technology that affect the entire business. So when those decisions are made, someone has to, if they fail or break or have to be updated someone, we need to look at someone who owns that and can manage that. Pam Didner: Do you think that should be part of the IT organization or should that be part of the marketing or sales organization? Of course, I'm talking about sales and the marketing tools. Moni Oloyede: Absolutely. Like that's what I mean. So if it's a marketing tool and marketers use it, marketing owns it. IT needs to be involved 100%, but this is a marketing tool used by the marketing department. So the best way-- you're going to the most you're going to get out of that tool was from a marketing standpoint. Pam Didner: Got it. Got it. That makes sense. I totally understand. And that one, another question I always, um, encounter, because I do actually work with the multiple different clients, uh, to actually help them to build MarTech stack. And the, some of them are very complicated and the stuff I'm working with them, it's only very small piece of those bigger, you know, that MarTech stack they are looking at. And I'm only focusing on one or two tools and then build a back-end integration. What I have come to realize. Is a lot of tools, especially SaaS- based platforms and because they are software and to every single tool tried to build additional features to serve their customers. So when you pick up a marketing automation tool, which is the centerpiece, then you pick a knowledge tool that you want to use safe for lead scoring. But unfortunately this company, they want to expand their product portfolio, so they build additional features that can also do the marketing automation tools that you are using. Then all of a sudden there's a, uh, there's a duplication features between those two tools. How do you make a call in terms of what features to use at what tool? That's one thing I'm always struggling. And your thought on that? Moni Oloyede: So I always go back with technology, the usage of the tool. Cause that's again, if not, if it's hard to use the tool or it's not executing properly, it's a waste. It's just a waste. So which tool is executing the best, most properly going to give us the best performance. That's what the one that we go with. So even though you may have a homegrown system that someone in there just loves to use and you know, that's their baby, if it's not performing optimally, it's wasting our time. So I try to be like unemotional about it and focus on the technology and how you are going to get the best marketing out of it, right? That's how I evaluate it. So sometimes that is the homegrown tool. Sometimes it's not, but that's how you kind of get like your emotions out of it and be more agnostic and do the best for the business. Pam Didner: Yeah. Is it so just being kind of like a devil's advocate for a minute. I 100% agree with you for both of us being, working with our internal stakeholders or my clients, for example, on setting the MarTech stack, one thing I have a hard time overcome or even help my clients overcome is it's very hard to change the behavior. You kinda allude to that, right? So they, they like to use the tool a certain way, even though it is most optimized, but it's so hard to change their behavior. Because they were like, “you know what? I just have to log in and then there's two automatically open, so I'm just using it” because they set up that way. Or they are so used to a certain kind of process that being set up 10 years ago. And now you have a new tool, you have a new process that you want them to change their behavior and they just not up for that. And I have so many issues--not issues, I have challenges, if you will--to help my clients overcome that. Do you have any suggestions in terms of how to do that? Moni Oloyede: So I'll give you two, two options. So number one is trying to upfront explain, and in a logical way, the best I can, what they're actually doing. So like, I always compare it to like Apple software updates or like new Apple phones. Like, if you want the functionality and the clear camera, then you need the iPhone 10, 11, 12. If you're on the 6, because you liked the 6, that's great but that's going to give you poor quality. It's the same kind of concept you have to give the give and take. Your comfort is sacrificing the best execution of the business, basically, you know what I mean? And then on the other end, uh, again, when like, like when interface has changed and stuff like that, like we hate it when you go from Microsoft XP to 10 to whatever the heck (Pam laughs), we hate it. But once you learn, you know, after a while, you know, a week or two and get used to it, you're fine. And it's the same thing. It's just like, they don't like change and new. It's not that it's bad or whatever. It's just, you don't like change. So I try to just calmly explain kind of like what is actually happening in that long-term they're affecting the business negatively by doing this. Pam Didner: You know what, the other thing that I do is just try to pull the cord. It’s like “you know what? That platform is going to be off. You are just going to use a new platform.” That's another, which is a very extreme way and forced them to change. But sometimes that does it, you know? Moni Oloyede: You have to sometimes because they will dig in. Absolutely. Sometimes you just have to cut it. Absolutely. Pam Didner: Yeah. And another question I would like to ask you is granted I, 100% agree with you have to know your centerpiece and then you bill your, uh, process and tools around that. And, um, another question I have is the integration. Yeah, man, I put so much time. I hated it. I have to drink. Just because of that so much time. It doesn't matter if he's API or without API; you always have to do custom coding to integrate or make two system to talk to each other. So Moni, I want to hear your experience on that. My experience has always been tough, tough, and it just, I cannot get this like two system to talk in a way that I wanted to, and always spend so much time and money on doing that. Moni Oloyede: So much. So this is one of my, like, core things about technology and kind of reiterating the points I was trying to make earlier because of this, this thing. So what is the technology for? what are you trying to get out of it? Like who's managing it? because the thing's just like this. If you haven't figured this out for your centerpiece, when you go to add technologies, you're going to exacerbate all of your problems. So the management is key. Who's managing this? Because I don't care what the integration is, how clean, how, whatever you're going to have to, at some point, go adjust something, fix something breaks something. It's just how it works. That's just technologies like cars. At some point, you're going to get a flat tire or something's going to break is just what it is. Machinery is how it works. So my biggest thing is like a lot of companies will do what I call “plan their technology for being most reliant.” Like I'm going to set up all these processes and I'm having this documentation and these rules in, you know what I mean? I'm going to set it up to the nth. So like nothing goes wrong. That never works, by the way. Pam Didner: That never works. Yeah. Something always goes wrong. Moni Oloyede: I say, set your technology up for resilience, right? Not reliance for resilience. So resilience is, if something goes wrong, we know something's about to go wrong, but we have, we can have a catch that it's not going to like break our whole system down. So that's how you got to start thinking about it. It's assume something is going wrong and then who's going to address it? So you can do this two ways. I like the preventative methods. So for all your technologies, right? all of them--especially they have integrations. I go, when I have a stack of probably I'm probably at a solid 10. I have a stack about 10 solid tools that I regularly am ? in. At some point regularly over the month, or the quarter--depending on how often I use this tool--I'm going in and checking certain indicators, right? Pam Didner: To make sure to make sure the tools are working. Moni Oloyede: Right. That’s preventative. Before something breaks. I'm already going to check in making sure da-da-da-da-duh. You have to do this. I've been doing this for 15 years. There's no other way around it. I haven't found it. Something's going to break. So you need to go in there and check on a regular basis before something does. Pam Didner: So with that being said, I have another thing I would like to ask you. So given that you've been doing, uh, marketing operations for a long period of time and dealing with, uh, technologies can you share with us like a perfect case study that you were doing either with the companies or the past experience that you launch this MarTech stack? And you can tell us a specific platform that you use and, uh, and it went very nicely. And granted, I have not encountered a situation I, I implemented them on tech stack (laughs) that's ran perfectly like run until the end. So, but it's like, it's meeting your expectation. Everything is going pretty much on schedule and it was on budget, which is unheard of as well. But anyway, can you share like a case study in terms of when you, how, what are some of the nuggets that you did very well? Moni Oloyede: So, this is also key and this is over my 15 years of learning. It's resetting expectations. Never listen to the technology company, sales person on their timeline. (Pam laughs) Ignore them completely. They’re lying. (laughs) Pam Didner: If they tell you it’s gonna be done in March, let’s bear in mind if that March 2021 on March 2022? Moni Oloyede: Seriously! 2,3 even? Seriously, throw their stuff out the window. So what you need to know is the bigger the centerpiece--so CRM is the longest marketing automation platform is the longest, so on and so forth. So it's going to take time. That's that's yeah. Sorry. You can't get away. This is the way it is. You want to have markers of progress. Right. Knock, never completion. Markers of progress. Pam Didner: It’s called job security, everybody (Moni laughs). Make sure you understand alright! That's called job security. Moni Oloyede: Facts! I also under promise over deliver. That's my motto (laughs). Pam Didner: Moni are you telling me we need to sandbag? Moni Oloyede: Just a little bit! You're gonna run into issues. The business is slow. They don't know what they're doing, especially when they're new. Right. If there's some there, these technologies are way more about business process and the technology itself, right? It's it's more of how the business is going to use it. What are they expecting out of it? Right? If they're expecting some $10 million in revenue. Well, let's see what we had to do here to like, make that happen. That's a long-term play. I also like remind people about marketing. What is marketing? Right? It's the communication of value. But over time, use any example. If there's, someone's not ready to buy your product. Okay. But what you're trying to do is trying to have enough brand impressions that when they already the purchase, whatever you're selling, you come to top of mind. That's really what your ultimate goal is really. So, you know, one of the things with technology that we've done over the last 10 years, I think that's now becoming a disservice is focusing too much on revenue and the bottom line and not enough about how to pull the right marketing levers, right? To then get your prospects to where you want them to be in the sales cycle. So we had to do a better job of that. Pam Didner: So trying to find that balance of a setting of the process up, but at the same time, still do marketing, right? Maximize your marketing efforts. Right. I hear you. Moni Oloyede: That’s what I actually try to do, Pam is like when I'm setting up these, these technologies for these organizations, I try to actually tie them to like marketing stuff. So we know that I was like, back in the day campaigns. “So let's get our first campaign out the door” and dah, dah, dah, dah. That's kinda like built over time for me to be more like, what is the messaging here? Who is our audience? What are we trying to be like, I have to go to now with these people. You think that like a lot of these organizations are there from a marketing standpoint and they're not. And they get these technologies and they hate them because they're not producing. It's like, “well, you're marketing stinks. There's nothing that's going to fix that.” Pam Didner: Yeah. True. True. I, 100% agree with you. You know, the campaigns, the content and the creative all needs to be pretty solid, pretty solid technology is important, but like there are basic elements, in terms of your creative, your content and how you do it, how do you segmentation of your customer? All that is actually all very critical. Moni Oloyede: And you can tie all of that to the platform, right? That’s Database cleanup that's database management, lead management process. Pam Didner: Oh god! Don’t talk to me about data base cleanup (Moni laughs) Look at my face. I’m crying tears in my eyes. Moni Oloyede: Yeah. I'll just say, I would say they're not independent. Right? You can tie all of these things to the performance of the tool, but we do it in my perspective is just backwards. Like we want the tool to do all this stuff. It's like, no, let's do the strategy and marketing properly and then apply that to the tool. You're gonna have a lot more success. Pam Didner: Find a balance between the technology stack and also do the marketing properly with the proper plans and the solid content and a strategy. Moni Oloyede: Win-win. Pam Didner: Very, very good. Um, this is a fantastic. Let me do a quick summary, uh, in terms of the, the wisdom you share with us. Obviously, um, Moni you talking about, uh, you need to have a key centerpiece and it doesn't matter if it’s your marketing automation tool on the marketing side or the CRM on the sales site? Know your centerpiece. And, uh, build your process and also your tool around that. And another thing is that the marketing technology, uh, implementation is never done. And granted you have a much bigger picture in terms of what you need to do. But set up the expectations and also different milestones and share that with your stakeholders. And another key thing that you share with us is somebody needs to own the tool needs to actively monitor managing, care for the tools. And then, and I think that person should also have a very good picture in terms of how different technology work together. Would you agree? Moni Oloyede: Yes. Absolutely. Pam Didner: Um, so, another key point that you mentioned about, uh, the technology usage, especially when you'll be able to process, uh, make sure that the users are actually using it and follow the process. And of course doing the right marketing and good marketing to go, uh, to compliment that. Moni Oloyede: Yes. Pam Didner: This is a great, great insight. Thank you so much for coming to my show and I would like to end with another question. So you can answer one of these two questions. What is your most useless talent? or do you have a ridiculous goal in your life that you really want to accomplish already accomplished? Moni Oloyede: I do have a ridiculous goal I want to accomplish. So, um, I am, uh, one of my passions and hobbies is weightlifting. And I want to be able to squat 500 pounds. Pam Didner: Okay. You are crazy. (Moni laughs) Go away! Don’t talk to me! (Pam laughs) 500 lbs.! Do you know how heavy that is? Moni Oloyede: I'll do. It’s crazy heavy. I'm only at 200, so I got a ways to go. Pam Didner: Oh my God. But you don't look very good. So for folks who are listening, we actually do a Zoom video recording, so I can actually see Moni. Moni looks solid. Not like me ugh. Never mind. Moni Oloyede: I can come to Oregon and get you together, Pam. No problem. (Pam laughs) Pam Didner: Fix me up! Please! So now it's 200 and you want to go to the 500 pounds. So I guess you have a routine that you actually do on a regular basis? Moni Oloyede: Yes, but by my schedule, I'm going to probably not get there till like 50 years old. I got to pick it up. Pam Didner: Well, the gyms need to open, too. I don't know about you, your area. I don't know about your areas. I mean, right now, and the time we are recording, the gyms are closed, uh, in the state of Oregon. So, and the, we just need to make sure that that's open now. It'll give me a proper excuse. So, “you know, this gyms closed… I mean…. “ Moni Oloyede: “What am I supposed to do?” Pam Didner: I cannot get to that! (both laugh) Well, thank you so much, Moni to come to my show and so happy to have you to share your wisdom and the insight. Moni Oloyede: Thank you. Pam Didner: It means a lot Moni you come to a show at the same time and people are listening. So in what means a lot to me, if you can subscribe to my show on your favorite channel. Moni Oloyede: OK. Pam Didner: Not you Moni! Everybody else. Well you can, too! Speaker: Speaker: Vince Klassen We asked last week, why don't we respond to connection attempts from the people we actually want to connect to? Are we possessed? Why do we suddenly snap at people we love? Or feel the desire to pull away from the people in our lives who are just trying to connect to us? What's going on? Why do we: - Snap at people we actually want to be warm towards - Ignore people we care about - Numb ourselves from people's attempts to connect with us This week we are going to take a look at another reason we are doing the very opposite of the things we want to do. Last week we learned that there are certain emotions that we don't like to feel, and any connection attempt through that emotion tends to get pushed away. This week we are going to learn of the legacy that was passed down to us that is getting in the way from: - A strong sense of connection to people we love - The ability to feel warm feelings to the people reaching out to us - The ability to create "drama free" connections with friends and family This week we are going to show you how to overcome this legacy and find the connection you actually want. #144 - Breaking Your Fixed Mindset is The Path To Success Growth vs. fixed mindset is a foundational principle of personal development and success. Whatever you are stuck on is likely rooted in your fixed mindset and the statements you make from this flawed perspective. A growth mindset recognizes that anything you want to improve is based on effort. This is the mindset of winners that take responsibility for their results or lack thereof. The fixed mindset is the mindset of the victim. For as long as you make statements about you not being "good" at something or of things being "hard," you'll never make progress. You must destroy these labels and change this story before you can change. This is how powerful this concept is. Ignore it, and you'll stay stuck forever. Embrace it, and you can change immediately. @ColinStuckert Founder: Wild Foods & The Better Human Podcast

Episode 76: Live Like Sean With Guest TJ Nelligan In this episode, we discuss living like Sean; living your best life. When Sean was young, he was diagnosed with an intellectual disability. Guest TJ Nelligan initially began mourning the child he thought he was going to have. After that, life got busy managing doctor appointments, medications, and therapy appointments. A friend later told him about Special Olympics. TJ and Sean went to check it out and loved it. They and their entire family quickly became involved in the organization. Through raising Sean, TJ learned lots of lessons. The first was to advocate for your child by heavily researching and visiting schools to find the right fit for your child and then get involved in that school. Will this school meet the needs of your child and maximize their ability through the school’s resources? When an issue arose, TJ never backed down. Another lesson is be present. Sean always lived in the moment, which made everyone he met feel special and seen. By being present, Sean made lots of friends and enjoyed every moment of his life. It also led him to some really exciting experiences that wouldn’t have occurred had he not lived in the moment. Gratitude is another lesson. Sean only focused on his strengths, which led him to be a grateful person. Tying that with being in the moment, he woke up every day with a great outlook and enjoyed every day. Over time, this led TJ to see Sean’s strengths, rather than deficits. Sean taught TJ to be happy. Find your passion and it will bring you happiness. You can make your own happiness by being in the moment. Happiness is a journey, not a destination. Ignore the destination and work on the journey. To stay in the moment, TJ now focuses only on what he can accomplish that day. Allow your child to inspire you. For TJ, that was in part from the Special Olympics. He found that that organization and unified sports really helped. These led to so much more kindness. TJ found it important to include TJ and everything. Make sure the children have time around their peers and spend time in the community. Help your child find their passion. Marketers love shiny new objects. They just can't help from chasing the butterflies of some new strategy, some new social network, some new marketing scheme. They want to be first to use it...first to understand it...and first to declare this new marketing phenomenon as the greatest thing since the beginning of time. That's fine. That's okay. It's good to introduce new ideas and strategies. But, this exuberance often leads to a place where these marketers can end up getting it all wrong. It's here where you need to ignore them. I want to talk with you about 4 things:You do not have to grieve in the same way as your familyIt is okay to prioritize your needs when you are suffering lossDeath is inevitableYou do not have to be afraid. We’re writing our stories, knowing that one of the chapters will ultimately result in the end of a story. And for many, that is a terrifying prospect.Death is a difficult topic, and is particularly raw for me. But I know I’m not alone. We all experience loss- those we know, those we love, and we are regularly reminded of our impending mortality as we read the obituaries, see people’s tributes, drive past cemeteries and bear witness to highway memorials. So what do we do about death? Ignore it? Dread it? Try to prevent it?How do we create meaning, how do we live our days with the passing of time, and the turning of the pages. How could it end any other way. Step one: Take Scripture out of context. Step two: Absolutely demonize those who disagree, with highly emotional and extremely judgmental language. Step three: Summarize your unbiblical views with utter hypocrisy and plank-eyed judgment toward anyone who dares to hold to a biblical Christianity. Step four: Conclude that your views, which Jesus most certainly would not have agreed with, are righteous and loving while those who disagree are going to go to your version of hell (but do this while condemning others for thinking they are righteous and loving and that those who disagree are going to their version of hell). Step five: Ignore all those who would rationally analyze your view and compare it to biblical teaching and historical Christianity. Here's Alisa Childers's channel. Today's meditation and retelling are from Joshua 2 and 6. Introduction: Rahab is mentioned three times in the New Testament: twice commended for her faith in Hebrews and in James, and once in Matthew 1:5, in the genealogy of Jesus. We know from the latter that she eventually married Salmon, of the tribe of Judah. Joshua never mentions the name of the two spies, but some tradition holds that Salmon was one of them (and it makes a for better story if he was, I think!) Despite her profession, she was commended for the same reason Abraham was: by faith (Romans 4:20-22). She heard the stories of God’s mighty works, and she believed them so completely that she put her life on the line as a potential traitor to her country in order to side with God’s people. Faith has always been what pleased God. Not only did the Israelites spare her life and those of her family, but she even went from harlot to being so highly esteemed in the eyes of the Lord that she became an ancestress of Christ. Interesting, since her act of faith is clearly self-interested, and she also had to lie to accomplish it. But (as James points out in James 2:25), the act, regardless of what it was, demonstrates the depth of her faith that God would do what He promised. It was her faith that motivated her to make sure she and hers were protected. Like the passover when the Israelites painted blood upon their doorposts so that the avenging angel would pass over their houses (Exodus 11-12), the scarlet cord Rahab tied in her window as a signal to the Israelites is likewise symbolic of the redemptive blood of Jesus. Presumably even in Canaan, harlotry was frowned upon. Rahab’s family might have disowned her or otherwise shunned her. If they had, her offer to bring them into her house and keep them safe probably made for an awkward week or two, depending upon how long they were there. Rahab knew she had at least three days from the time she let the spies go. Then it probably took them at least a day or two to return with the whole army. When they did return, they marched around Jericho for seven days before the walls finally fell. So Rahab and her family were holed up in her home for at least that long. I wonder if she had enough food for everyone! The mention of flax that she was spinning into linen and the scarlet cord on her roof suggests that she was manufacturing and dying linen, and presumably selling it, to try to support herself in some other way. Perhaps this is an indication that she didn’t want the life of prostitution and was looking for a way out. Rahab’s house was built upon the walls of Jericho (Joshua 2:15). If the walls were thick enough for all that, it makes it even more miraculous that they fell down with nothing but shouts and trumpets. Also if the walls fell down, but Rahab and her household were not crushed in the rubble, God either must have held up just the section of the wall that served as the foundation for Rahab’s house, or else he must have supernaturally protected the structure as it fell to the ground. I assume the latter, since Joshua sent the spies back to her house to lead them out (Joshua 6:22). That meant there still was a house. In her initial encounter with the spies, Rahab told them how the people of Canaan’s hearts had melted within them ever since they heard the stories of God parting the Red Sea. This must have been such a confirmation to Joshua and Caleb when they heard it: they were the only two spies from the first generation who had believed God (Numbers 13-14), and the only two of that company still alive now. Had they gone in and taken the land forty years earlier like God had told them to, Rahab’s words confirmed that they would have succeeded easily. God had already fought the battle for them in their enemies’ minds. For forty years, the people had continued to tremble at the stories of the Israelites’ exploits, until God’s promises could come to pass. Fictionalized Retelling There weren’t very many occupations for a single Canaanite woman. And despite my beauty, I would always be single, thanks to a smooth-talking scoundrel who deflowered me in my youth. No respectable man would now have me as his wife. But plenty of them would be happy to have me on other terms. I was a practical woman, and saw no point in spending time weeping over what was. Most men visited harlots only in secret, in the dead of night, and if they spoke of it at all, it was in hushed tones. Houses of ill repute were known only by word of mouth, and they did not advertise. I scorned this idea. If I was to be a harlot, I intended to be a prosperous one. As a consequence, my family disowned me. This hurt, but I saw no point in weeping over that either. They would do what they would do, and I would have to get on with it. I purchased a house on credit right on top of the enormous walls of Jericho, by the city gates, so that every traveler would have a good view and would know at a glance exactly what we were. I then recruited other girls to work for me, in exchange for a safe place to live and do their business. Prostitution was often a dangerous occupation, as our customers were always unscrupulous to varying degrees. I would provide for my girls’ basic needs, and even some of their luxuries. In time, this proved so lucrative that I soon could afford to promote myself to business manager, no longer needing to offer my own services at all. I paid off my creditor, and even had enough seed money to let myself dream of one day supporting myself in a respectable trade. I purchased flax and scarlet worms, teaching myself to turn flax into linen, and dye it scarlet. The roof of my home was flat, so I left the linen there to dry overnight before taking it into the marketplace for sale. Then during the day, while my girls slept, I disguised myself and took my scarlet linen into the Jericho marketplace. This was where I first heard people talk about the Israelites, and their God. I heard only snippets at first. I had the impression that the stories were old ones, from before my time. Apparently the Israelites were a nomadic people, having spent decades living in the desert after their God had delivered them from slavery in Egypt miraculously. “He parted the Red Sea and they walked across on dry land! Yes!” one customer told me when I asked him how they had escaped from Pharaoh. I blinked, and felt the corners of my mouth turn up, skeptical. “Surely you exaggerate,” I said, but the man shook his head emphatically. “I do no such thing! After they crossed over, the waters consumed the Egyptians, chariots and all!” I asked around, but all the other customers told me that they had heard the same story. Most of them said it with awe. “Then they completely destroyed the kings of the Amorites, Sihon and Og!” another customer told me. “These aren’t soldiers, mind you. They were slaves, and now they are nomads. But it doesn’t matter; their God fights their battles for them.” Then he lowered his voice and whispered, “Rumor has it they have their sights set on Jericho next!” I was taken aback by this, catching the fear from my customer like a contagion. I gave him his linen and closed up shop for the day in the late afternoon. When I returned, Pigat, one of my girls, was awake and readying herself for her work that evening. She saw my expression and frowned. “You look like you’ve heard bad news,” she observed. “What’s wrong?” I turned to look at her. “Have you heard of the nomadic people called the Israelites, who used to be slaves in Egypt?” “Oh! My father and uncles were terrified of them when I was little,” she nodded, and told me the same story I had heard in the marketplace: of millions of people crossing the Red Sea on dry ground, and the Egyptians consumed in the waters. If it had been exaggerated, surely the story would change from person to person, wouldn’t it? “Why was your family afraid, though?” I pressed. “What have we to do with them?” Pigat’s eyes widened. “They say their God led them out of slavery to give them a land of their own. Our land.” I shivered involuntarily as she said this. “But didn’t the Red Sea story happen decades ago?” I asked. “If their God intended to give them our land, why hasn’t it happened already?” Pigat shook her head. “I don’t know, but my family was sure they would come against us eventually.” Each time I went to the marketplace and had the opportunity after that, I asked about the Israelites. I heard more stories, too: of the ground opening up and swallowing those among the Israelites who were disobedient to the leaders. Of bread falling from heaven and miraculously feeding the people. Some said the people did not come in to take our land nearly forty years ago because they had done something to anger their God, but it was still foretold that Jericho would fall to them. And not Jericho only, but all of Canaan. The Israelites began to infiltrate my dreams. My mind conjured images of great warriors suffused with a supernatural glow of power, storming Jericho with flaming swords, and slashing down everyone in their path, before turning their swords upon me. I woke in a cold sweat, gasping, and placed a hand upon my pounding heart. At first I thought the sound I heard was my heart slamming against my ribcage. But as I reoriented myself to the present, I recognized that the pounding was coming from the door downstairs. I peered out my window and frowned when I saw the moon high in the sky. We sometimes got late customers, but this was ridiculous. All my girls were surely fast asleep—or they were, before all this racket. I pulled on my shawl, the one I preferred for warmth rather than for enticement, and padded down to the door, prepared to tell the visitors to return tomorrow at a more reasonable hour. But when I opened the door, something about the two men’s appearance stilled my tongue. Both of them wore simple garments of unadorned cloth, though they looked new enough. The men were both perhaps in their early thirties, like me—tall, well built, and imposing. Both had long dark hair and long black beards that looked as though they had not been trimmed in many years. I noticed one in particular more than the other. His black eyes glittered at me in the moonlight, and he had a powerful chest, straight nose, and high, clear forehead. I had not offered my own personal services to a customer in over a year now, but I found myself thinking, this time, I might not mind… “It is very late,” I said instead, “and my girls are in bed. If you return tomorrow, you may have your pick—” “Please,” the man I had admired stopped me, holding up a hand. “We are not here for that, we simply wish to beg a room for the night.” I blinked at them suspiciously. “This is no inn.” “We know that,” said the other man, “and we know the nature of your business. But the Lord God told us to come here, so we have come.” It was like a password, somehow, though I could not have said why. I stepped back from the doorway to let them pass inside. The handsome one, I noticed, averted his eyes from me and gave me a wider berth than necessary. I might have felt ashamed, but I could sense that his behavior was motivated by suppressed attraction rather than disgust. I found this far more intriguing than if he had openly ogled me. “I do have a room available, though just the one, I’m afraid. One of my girls has recently moved on.” I looked at the other man, and gestured to the open doorway. “You may sleep here.” Then I looked at the man who refused to meet my gaze, and considered inviting him to share my chamber. I almost wanted to do it just to see if could make him blush, but in the end I held my tongue. Of course he could never respect me, given what I was. But for some strange reason I could not explain, I found that I wanted to try to earn his respect all the same. “You both may sleep here if you wish, though one will have to take the floor,” I said at last. The handsome one raised his eyes to me now. “Thank you,” he said, genuine gratitude in his voice. I realized he had feared the offer I had almost made, and was suddenly very glad I had not made it. “May we know the name of our hostess?” asked the friend. I bowed my head, trying to remember the manners of a lady I had learned and then forgotten so long ago. “I am called Rahab,” I told them. “And, may I know yours?” “I am Berel,” said the friend, “and this is Salmon.” Salmon, I repeated the name in my mind. “Those are peculiar names in Canaan,” I observed, “you must be visitors to these parts?” “We are,” said Berel, guarded. I watched them, wondering if I should say aloud what I suspected from the moment they referenced the Lord. “You are Hebrews,” I guessed, watching their faces. “The Lord sent you to spy out our land and see where we are vulnerable.” The two men exchanged wide-eyed a look, which was as good as confirmation. “Do not worry,” I said at once. “I will not betray your secret.” Berel frowned, suspicious. “Why not?” I didn’t know the answer myself yet. But just as I opened my mouth to answer, I heard another pounding at the door, sharp and insistent. It was accompanied by a shout though the door: “Rahab! Open up!” “It’s one of the kings’ soldiers!” I hissed, “quick! Follow me!” I scampered up to the rooftop, open to the air, and pointed at the stalks of flax I had collected and not yet spun into linen. “Hide in there, go!” I did not wait to see that they obeyed; I hurried back downstairs, seeing lanterns flicker on in my girls’ bedrooms as I went, and a few of them poked their heads out at me to see what all the fuss was about. They could hardly avoid being awakened by all the commotion. “Shh, go back to bed!” I hissed at all and sundry, smoothing my wrap and taking a deep breath before I pulled open the rattling door. I had seen the soldier who glared down at me before, making his rounds in the city. There were three other soldiers behind him. “I come by order of the king,” the first soldier barked. “We were told that men have come here tonight from the children of Israel to search out the country, and that they have entered your house. Bring them out now.” In a moment, I decided how to play this: the soldier in front was all business, and I knew he at least would not soften in response to coquetry. So instead I affected an expression of wide-eyed innocence, and told them just enough of the truth. “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. And it happened as the gate was being shut, when it was dark, that the men went out.” The words were already out of my mouth before the fear struck me that someone might have told the soldiers when the men had come to my home. If they had, this lie would immediately mark me as a traitor. But I’d said it now; nothing to do but double down. “Where the men went I do not know; pursue them quickly, for you may overtake them!” It worked. The soldier in front was clearly in charge; he turned on his heel without another word and rushed away from my door and toward the front gates. The other two followed behind him. I watched until I saw them disappear by the road to the Jordan, to the fords. Breathing a sigh of relief when they had gone, I closed the front door behind me. All the girls except Pigat had gone back to bed. But she continued to gaze at me with her torch in one hand, frowning. I made a shooing motion with my hand. “All is well, not to worry,” I told her. “Go back to sleep.” “The Israelites were here?” she echoed what she had heard, her voice trembling. “Yes, apparently, but they are gone now. It’s all right.” “Then it’s happening!” she declared with a shudder, tears pricking her eyes, “we are about to die! They will kill every last one of us!” “Shh, go back to bed,” I insisted. “They won’t kill us if I have anything to say about it. We’ll talk about this in the morning, now go on.” She gave a hesitant nod, sniffled, and blew out her torch, closing her door again. I heaved a sigh, trying to calm my pounding heart as I climbed back to the roof. “Psst!” I hissed, “it’s just me!” The two heads poked out from among the flax. “You can come out for now, but I’m afraid I cannot offer you lodging inside after all, lest my girls see you in the morning.” “What did you tell the soldiers?” Berel asked as they got to their feet, apprehension knitting his brow. “That you did come to me, but I had already sent you away. They are pursuing you on the road to the Jordan in the direction of the fords as we speak.” Salmon gazed at me in wonder. “You realize that if your king discovers what you have done, he will have you executed as a traitor?” I took a deep breath, fidgeting with my wrap. “Yes. I know this.” “Then—why?” Salmon pressed. “Why are you helping us?” I met his gaze. “I know that the Lord has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. And as soon as we heard these things. our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath.” As I said this, I saw Salmon’s expression clear from suspicion to surprise, to something else—something softer. I dropped my gaze. “Now therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father’s house, and give me a true token, and spare my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.” Salmon opened his mouth to speak, eyes wide. He hesitated, and what he said was, “But—you are a Canaanite woman. You are a Canaanite harlot!” I winced at his blunt statement, but he did not seem to notice, adding, “And do you believe in the Lord God? In our Lord?” Trying to recover myself, I said at last, “There is no other God in heaven or on earth who can do what your God can do. If I must choose sides, I choose to side with the winner. This is entirely self-interested on my part, I assure you.” Berel shot a look at his open-mouthed friend. “You are correct that the Lord has given Jericho and all of Canaan into our hands,” he told me. “But many of our own number, who have seen daily miracles in the wilderness, struggle to believe in the Lord as fully as you have just now expressed. That is what Salmon is trying to say: he is impressed.” He nudged his companion with a slight, almost teasing smirk, before turning back to me. “And yes: our lives for yours, if none of you tell this business of ours. And it shall be, when the Lord has given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.” I swallowed, casting an involuntary glance at Salmon, and then gave Berel a quick, business-like nod. “All right. Follow me. I can lower you down on the other side of the city wall through the window of the empty room we were just in.” I grabbed a thick flaxen cord from the roof as well, already dyed scarlet. Behind me, the men’s footsteps were almost silent. When we entered the dark room and I led them to the window, I started to see Salmon closer behind me than I had expected. Both of us drew back very quickly, and, for what might have been the first time since my girlhood, I felt myself actually blush. Berel bit his lip, as if trying not to laugh. I cleared my throat, even though I kept my voice to a whisper as I tied the scarlet rope against the bedpost to secure it. “Here, let me,” said Salmon in a husky whisper, accidentally brushing his fingers against mine as he took over the job of tying the knot. I self-consciously tucked a lock of hair behind my ear, confused by the unfamiliar flutter I felt. When he had finished, together we hoisted the cord out the window, watching it fall almost down to the path outside the city. They would have to jump the last distance, but it was small. Or at least it looked small from up here. I hoped it really was. I turned to Salmon. “Get to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you. Hide there three days, until the pursuers have returned. Afterward you may go your way.” Berel nodded, and said, a warning note in his tone, “We will be blameless of this oath of yours which you have made us swear, unless, when we come into the land, you bind this line of scarlet cord you have used in the window through which you let us down, and unless you bring your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household to your own home. So it shall be that whoever goes outside the doors of your house onto the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we will be guiltless. And whoever is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him. And if you tell this business of ours, then we will be free from your oath which you made us swear.” I bowed my head to him. “According to your words, so be it.” Even though I wondered how I would explain to my family, who had all but disowned me from the time they discovered my profession, that they needed to lodge in my house of ill repute for an unspecified amount of time. At least I had three days to figure it out. Berel stepped between Salmon and me, taking the scarlet cord from my hands. “I’ll go first,” he volunteered. “That’ll give the two of you a moment to, ah—say goodbye.” I caught the sharp glare Salmon shot his friend. Berel laughed quietly, swinging himself to the outer edge of the window before he vanished. The air immediately felt thick with tension as soon as he had gone. But Salmon was a stranger to me; I knew nothing of him, or of his culture. I hadn’t the slightest idea what to say. He cleared his throat unnecessarily, before he said, sounding rather awkward, “Thank you. For helping us.” I shrugged. “As I said, it’s pure self-interest.” “It’s faith,” he corrected me. As he said this, I saw his arm move toward me, hesitate, and then freeze in midair before dropping back to his side. “I know that my profession makes me abhorrent to you,” I whispered, dropping my eyes. “No! You misunderstand…” Salmon ran a hand through his hair, sighed, and looked away. “Well, yes, sort of,” he admitted, “but—” “It’s okay,” I cut him off with a wave of my hand, gesturing at the window and taking a step back from him. “I need no approval from you. I’ve learned to live without it everywhere else. Go on, your friend is waiting.” I was hurt. I recognized this much, though it was absurd that this man I had barely spoken to should be capable of hurting me. Salmon seemed upset, but did not know how to make it right. He hesitated, and then did as I had commanded, moving toward the window and taking hold of the rope. He glanced at me, swallowed, and at last managed, “I hope we will meet again someday. Goodbye, Rahab.” Then he vanished. I let out a breath I had not realized I had been holding, and then leaned out my window to watch Salmon’s descent next to Berel. When he had leapt the last distance to the ground, both of them looked up at me, waved, and ran off in the direction of the mountain. I hauled up the cord after them so that a visitor to the city might not look up at the window and discern what might have happened. Then I went back to the rooftop, retrieved a knife, and sawed off the bulk of it, leaving just enough of a scarlet cord tied on the outside of the window to serve as our signal. I had three days. I barely slept that night, turning over in my mind what I should do next. I had a sense that Salmon and Berel were men of action; they would not tarry. The Israelites would probably descend upon Jericho within the week. I decided that I could not trust most of my girls not to betray me to the king—but neither could I abandon them to slaughter, at least not without giving them a choice. I determined to wait until the last minute, when the Israelites were already upon us, and then I would tell them they could stay with me and join the Israelites, or leave. Then they would not have enough time to betray me. My family posed a bigger problem. I could not convince them to lodge with me, given the infamy of my profession, without giving them a good reason. And I could not give them a good reason without putting my life in their hands. I knew they disapproved of me, but surely they would not give me up to execution as a traitor, not when my intention was to save their lives along with my own? I didn’t know, but I would have to risk it. The next morning, I arrayed myself in my drab linen clothing so as not to draw attention to myself, just as if I were going to the marketplace. But instead, I went to my father’s house for the first time in over a decade. I gritted my teeth, steeling myself against whatever might come. The door swung open, and I gasped. “Mother!” The woman in the doorframe looked like a shadow of her former buxom, laughing self. Her skin was papery and white. It had been ten years, but she looked like she had aged at least twenty. Her hooded eyes briefly searched my face and widened. “Rahab?” She took a step away rather than towards me, which stung. “You shouldn’t be here. Your father—” “Disowned me, yes, I remember,” I said with a fixed smile, “and I came anyway, because your lives are in danger. All of ours are. I alone can save you.” Twenty-four hours later, my entire estranged family crammed into my house of ill repute. My father, after first ordering me out of his home, finally changed his tune and instead went to my brothers and sisters, bearing my message. While my parents recruited my siblings, I went to the marketplace to buy enough food for all the sudden guests, to last through the siege. I did this in multiple trips, hoping not to raise eyebrows at why I felt the sudden need to stockpile supplies. I hoped the Israelites would return soon, if only to curtail my awkward family reunion. Then I felt guilty for thinking this, as the Israelites’ return would mean the slaughter of every citizen of Jericho save those in my own home. They had no idea, I thought, as I passed mothers with children in the streets. As always, they crossed to the other side of the street when they saw me coming, wanting to avoid contamination. This used to hurt, long ago. Then I became calloused to it, ignoring those who shunned me. Now, I felt compassion… but not enough to risk my own life to warn them. I had risked enough in warning my own family, and I had no more room in my home for anyone else anyway. Most of my girls left in a huff after my sisters insulted them. Only Pigat remained, having guessed why they were there after seeing the Israelites. With each passing day, I wrung my hands, fearful that the girls who had left would turn me in to the authorities as a traitor, though I had officially confessed nothing. On the second day after Berel and Salmon had left my house, I watched over the wall and saw the soldiers of Jericho return empty-handed. I held my breath as they passed by, fearful they might knock on my door again and wonder why I suddenly played host to so many. Fortunately they had no other reason to approach me, and they passed on by. On the third day, nothing happened at all. I knew that was the day the two spies would leave the mountain and return to their camp. My father began to sneer at me, accusing me of lying to all of them, and ruining their reputations by their sudden association with me. My mother snapped at him to leave me alone, which brought tears to my eyes. But when she turned away from him, she did not look at me either. On the fourth day, I thought I heard the distant rumble of marching in the desert. I ran to the rooftops, and peered out into the distance. Pigat crept up behind me. “Is that them?” she whispered. “I don’t know,” I whispered back. She wrapped her little hands around my forearm, and I leaned into her, grateful for her companionship. “I’m scared,” she confessed. “Everything is about to change, isn’t it?” I kissed the top of her head, and smoothed back her hair. “Yes, little one,” I whispered back. “But I believe it will be a change for the better.” “How do you know?” I considered this, and a thousand images flashed across my mind: of losing my virginity and my virtue. Of the awful things I had to do since then to support myself. Of all the respectable people who had turned against me. Of the moment my father had disowned me, many years ago. Of the nights I had cried myself to sleep with loneliness and regret, before rising in the morning with determination to make my own way. Of grieving as I finally understood what had happened to my own soul, by watching it play out in the broken girls who worked for me. Then I thought of how I had felt when I started to hear the stories of the God of Israel. The Canaanites had gods, but honestly, I had never thought much of them. They had no power. They certainly had no goodness. Yet the Israelites’ God used His power to deliver His people from their oppressors, to grant them victory over their enemies. That did not necessarily make Him good, but it certainly made Him great. I wanted to ally myself with that God, if only because I did not wish to suffer the fate of His enemies. Then I’d met Berel and Salmon. It was so very brief, that to draw any major conclusions about Israelites in general based upon that one encounter seemed foolish. Yet they had been kind. It had been so long since a man had been truly kind to me that I hardly remembered what it felt like. They said their God had directed them to come to me, even knowing what I was. They spoke to me with respect, even gratitude. I realized I had never answered Pigat. She had asked how I knew that this would be a change for the better. “All my adult life, it’s been me against the world,” I told her at last. “A father is supposed to protect and defend his daughter, a brother his sister, a husband his wife. I had none of these. No one to rely upon but myself.” “You did a great job, even so,” Pigat said with a tentative smile. I returned her smile affectionately, and said, “But I would never have chosen this life, had I had any other choice. None of us would. It was a matter of survival, that’s all. Then I heard of a God who protects and defends His people, and…” I looked at her and confessed earnestly, “I want that. More than I’ve ever wanted anything in my life. I wasn’t born one of them, but if it’s possible to become one of them anyway, then whatever it takes, I want to do it. I want to belong to the God of Israel.” Tears pricked at my eyes as I said this. I didn’t realize how deep that ran: my desire to belong to someone who valued me. I would give my life for it. Pigat blinked up at me, and gave me a tiny nod of agreement, answering tears swimming in her own eyes. I knew she felt the same way. I turned back to peer out into the desert, and gasped. “Look!” It was them at last, and more than I possibly could have imagined. From this distance, the Israelites looked like a swarm of locusts. “It’s starting,” I murmured. “Should we go inside?” Pigat whispered. Down below, I heard the gates of the city closing. The watchmen had spotted the approaching army too. “You can if you want to,” I told her. “I think I want to watch.” It took a week, all told. I grew impatient as day after day, the men of Israel marched around the walls of Jericho once, blowing trumpets but otherwise holding their peace. They did not storm the city gates, or make any attempt to enter. “What are they doing?” my sister Hurriya murmured beside me on the third day: the first time she had voluntarily spoken to me since she had come I shook my head and shivered. “I have no idea, but it’s unnerving. I wish they would get on with it already.” Inside our walls, the city of Jericho uneasily tried to continue life as usual, which I knew only by looking out the windows and seeing the usual traffic in the streets. A few men even came to my house at nightfall, seeking the services of my girls. I turned them away, of course. Two of them, already drunk, became violent, until my brothers Keret and Paebel came to my defense. The men scampered off in a hurry. Once they were gone, the moments afterwards were awkward. “Thank you,” I mumbled, not daring to meet my brothers’ eyes. Paebel gave me a curt nod and walked off. Keret snapped, “Just tell me you’re not going back to harlotry when this is all over.” I slapped him. I did it without thinking, surprised by the violence of my own emotions. His cheek reddened in where my hand had stung him. “I will never be a harlot again!” I hissed. “I never would have been one in the first place, had I any other choice! Do you think I wanted this life?” I stalked off before he could reply, leaving him gaping behind me. Over the next three days, my family began to offer me awkward and overly polite acknowledgements for the food and lodging. They even stopped treating Pigat like a ghost, though it was clear they were uncomfortable with her. And all the time, the Israelites marched around Jericho’s walls, in silence save for the trumpets. Sometimes I went up to the room where the scarlet cord was tied, where my brothers slept, and peered down below to see if I could identify the faces of any of the Israelite soldiers. I was looking for Salmon, though I never would have admitted it. On the seventh day at last, something changed: instead of just once, the Israelites marched around the city walls seven times. They were still silent save for the trumpets, but they had picked up their pace considerably. My heart thrummed in my chest. I knew something was on the verge of happening, though I had no idea what it would be. Then, on their seventh pass, when the trumpets blew, as one all the Israelites raised their voices in a mighty shout. I wondered that their voices could have made such noise, until I realized that the sound was now coming from the very foundations of my house. I felt it in the stones below me. I looked and saw, to my horror and amazement, that the city walls—thick enough for houses and businesses like mine to be built atop them—fell down flat in a ripple effect. And then— I screamed, grasping wildly for something to hold on to, but it was no use. I was airborne, as the ground below me collapsed. I collided with the ground again, gasping and trying to orient myself as I groped to my feet. I looked up and saw that the roof held, as did the floor. I ran to the window with the scarlet cord, which moments ago had been far above the ground outside the city walls. Now, suddenly, it was only one story above ground level… and there were no more city walls. Outside my window I saw the invading army rushing by with swords drawn, still shouting their battle cry. I trembled in terror, praying that they would see the scarlet cord and remember their promise to me. The next thing I knew, Pigat and my entire family all crowded in that little room with me, huddled together in fear. Then I heard the ominous sound of pounding on my door down below, above the din of the battle. “Ignore them,” Pigat whispered to me in a tremulous voice. “Maybe they’ll go away!” The pounding started again, three times, insistent. “Maybe not,” Keret said gravely, and rose to his feet, trying to be brave. “I will see to it—” “No,” I stopped him, reaching out an arm as I rose instead, trying to be brave. “They do not know you. I, at least, have met two of them. If they will spare anyone, they will spare me.” My voice was remarkably steady, though I trembled as I descended the stairs—marveling vaguely that as the foundation of my home beneath us fell down flat, its structure was somehow still intact. The pounding began again, this time accompanied by a voice. “Rahab?” I caught my breath and rushed to the door, throwing it open. Salmon and Berel looked glorious now, no longer like spies, but like warriors. Their swords were sheathed, but their hair was backlit by the sun and their eyes glowed with the heat of battle. I felt my face split into an involuntary grin. “You came back for me!” Salmon looked almost affronted. “Of course we came back for you. We are men of our word.” He reached out an arm to me and beckoned, “Come, you and your household. Our leader Joshua has sent us to escort you outside the city where you will be safe. Take with you any possessions you wish to keep, as well, as we plan to burn the city to the ground.” My eyes widened. I turned to spread this message to the others, but they were all halfway down the stairs before I could get to them. My parents, siblings, and Pigat already had gathered up what they could carry. “My flax!” I said, rushing up to the roof to gather what I had already spun into linen and had planned to sell at the marketplace. It was not yet dyed, but I figured that the Israelite camps would still have plenty of use for linen. I scooped as much as I could carry into my arms, and turned to find Salmon standing very close behind me. I was so jittery and startled that I dropped it all on the ground again. “Oh!” I gasped, a hand flying to my chest. “You—scared me.” He did not answer for a moment; he gazed at me, a look of curiosity and wonder on his face. All around us raged the shouts of battle, and yet here we were, alone, mere stories above it all. Salmon seemed to recall himself before I did, and murmured, “Here, let me get that.” He scooped up what I had dropped, and gestured for me to return inside. “Grab any other valuables you have.” I did as he instructed, rushing back downstairs and collecting my few precious belongings: candlesticks and bowls, one golden ring, and a head scarf I had treasured as a young girl, before my life became what it had been. Berel was already carrying a load of Pigat’s valuables. “Let’s get out of here!” my mother begged. Berel nodded swiftly, being the closest to the door. “This way,” he said, and hurried out first. Pigat, my mother and sisters were right on his heels, followed by my brothers, my father, and then Salmon and me. Salmon brought up the rear, and I realized that he and Berel served as protection for my family between them. The army would recognize them, and would not touch us. The hike to the Israelite camp was not as far as I had expected, but it still took us several miles. As each of us fell into our relative paces, I found myself striding alone beside Salmon. I wasn’t sure if that was his doing or mine. “Thank you for coming back for us,” I said at last. Salmon nodded. “As I said, Joshua sent us back for you.” I didn’t know what to say to this, so I said nothing. Seeming to realize his mistake, he amended, “Not that—I wouldn’t have volunteered to do so. If he hadn’t.” I glanced at him with a small smile, and then lapsed back into silence. I was worried about what was to come next. I had left behind me everything I had ever known—and while I certainly did not regret the loss of that life, surely the Israelites did not view prostitution any more favorably than did my family. Would I become an outcast among the Israelites as I had in Jericho, and have to resort to the same profession after all in order to support myself? Would the God of Israel want nothing to do with me? “You need not fear,” Salmon said gently. I glanced at him, startled, and saw that he was watching me. “What?” “I suspect I can guess your apprehensions. I won’t pretend the cultural adjustments won’t be significant. But our leader Joshua is disposed to deal kindly with you, for how you aided Berel and myself, and by extension, all of Israel. I told him how you risked yourself for our sakes, because you heard of the great works of the Lord and believed in Him.” I was surprised at the lump which sprang to my throat at this, and the ache in my chest. “But what if your Lord wants nothing to do with a woman like me?” I whispered. I had not meant to say it; the words just slipped out. To my surprise, Salmon shifted his load to one arm so that he could reach out and touch my hand with the other. I stopped walking, startled, and jerked my hand away from him like I had been burned. “You should want nothing to do with me, either! You know what I am!” But Salmon reached out for me again, taking my hand in his firmly this time. “Yes,” he said, “I do know. You are a woman who merely heard of God’s works, and without ever seeing them for yourself, you believed—even to the point of staking your own life upon your allegiance to Him. How many Israelites do not believe, even when they have seen? You are a woman who so loved her family, even when they shunned her, that you risked your life to save theirs. You are a woman who clearly loves and protects one of your girls like your own little sister, who I’m guessing has no one else to care for her either. You are an enterprising woman who obviously wants to find any other means of support for herself and those under her protection, hence the linen.” He indicated the burden he was carrying, and shook his head. “I do not know what blows life has dealt you to lead to you to the place you have been. But Israel can be a second chance for you, if you want it to be.” Tears ran down my cheeks as he spoke. I couldn’t even wipe them away, since one arm grasped all my remaining worldly belongings, while Salmon firmly held my other. I sniffled, and confessed, “I want that more than anything in the world!” He gave me a swift nod. “Then that’s settled.” Then with a sly smile, he said, “I will introduce you to the women of Israel as a merchant of scarlet linen, and leave it at that, shall I? And Pigat is… your apprentice.” A grateful laugh and sob together escaped my lips, and I nodded, unable to speak. Salmon was as good as his word. When we reached the tents where the women, children, and elderly waited for the return of their soldiers, he introduced Pigat and me as linen merchants. He also told them that we had hidden him and Berel, and told them how to escape. My family easily could have contradicted the story, but they did not. For the first time in as long as I could remember, I was surrounded by respectable women who did not mind if their children played in my presence. I learned that Israel was comprised of twelve tribes, and I also gathered that Salmon was a prominent and well-respected member of the tribe called Judah. Israel had no princes, but if they had, it seemed, he would have been one of them. This made me shy in his presence, though he treated me just as attentively after I learned this as before. “And as a proselyte, you can choose which tribe you join!” one of my new friends told me cheerfully. Then she dropped her voice and added, “Unless you marry into one, in which case, the tribe chooses you.” She cast a significant glance in Salmon’s direction at this, not bothering to hide her implication from anyone. He grinned, and I blushed furiously and dropped my eyes—a reflex I had not known I still possessed. It was a strange contradiction, to feel so happy while the city that had been my home burned in the distance. Death and tragedy was all around us, and yet I had never felt so hopeful or at peace. Suddenly, anything seemed possible.

Cheryl Walker joins Kristin and Leigh to discuss the sexual issues facing women at midlife. The silencing of our sexual voice can lead to an inability to express desires, wishes to try new things, and can limit sexual satisfaction for both women in committed relationships and women post-divorce. Cheryl suggests three tips for women on the remake:Love your vulva: Examine it, know its beauty, love its power. Don't believe the hype: Ignore the many voices sending you messages that you internalize to your own detriment and sexual dissatisfaction. The ''hype" can be ideas about what you are "supposed to" like, not like, do, or not do.Find your sexual voice: This is the voice that is drowned out by the hype. This voice, when given its power, can lead you to sexual freedom, fulfillment, and yes-- fun.ResourcesCome As You Are: The Surprising New Science That Will Transform Your Sex Life by Emily Nagoski, Ph. People in other countries around the world know that Biden cheated and that Trump won because they have been exposed to more truth. Use your common sense. Do you really think Biden got more votes than Obama and Hillary??? He did not campaign. His prior runs for office were dismal failures. He had no crowds at rallies. Look at Trump. His rallies were jam packed. There was a 92 mile caravan of supporters in Arizona. Do you really think he lost Arizona??? No way! Think for yourself. Ignore the lies of the media. Trump won a landslide re-election. That is the truth. Telling you that Biden won is telling you a lie. Trust that ultimately truth prevails over lies. Trump will be President for at least 4 more years. He won. So be patient. Every lie will be revealed. It takes time because there have been so many lies for so many years. Trust God. Trust Truth. Did you know soldiers used to carry flowers into battle to keep them healthy? Dr. Liza Dunn joins Michele and Eliz for a fascinating conversation about pesticides, nutrition, herbicides, and why doctors need to stay in their lane. Liza Dunn is a mom of 3 boys and a hockey fan who loves her pets - a pug, a horse and a snake. She's also an emergency physician and a medical toxicologist who has done relief work in Haiti and Kenya. Her work there opened her eyes to the importance of food security and vector control for public health. She is now the Medical Affairs Lead for Bayer Crop Sciences. Key points: Why should medical doctors “stay in their lane”? Medical school educates about disease not nutrition or agriculture Without a background in nutrition of ag, doctors have less information than they think Registered dietitians are a good place to start for high quality nutrition information Gastroenterologist have specific training that general medical doctors and other specialist do not. As a medical doctor, why have you focused on agriculture? Participating in humanitarian missions changed Liza’s focus She identified malnutrition and insect born illness were the leading issues If you can address those issues, real progress can be made The vast majority of the world lives on rice, corn, and wheat - and miss out on vital micronutrients Golden rice was modified to contain Vitamin A - and could have a significant impact to end blindness caused by malnutrition Golden rice was donated, but has been blocked by activists against GMOs Why are pesticides important? Insect born illness has been a problem for centuries War wounds in the past didn’t kill the majority of soldiers, insects did For centuries soldiers used to carry chrysanthemums into battle, because the flowers produce natural pesticides Three tips to overcome Food Bullying: Try to look for healthy nutrition information Ignore labels about what’s NOT there Get good advice: Liza suggests: PesticideFacts.org and GeneticLiteracyProject.org Links: Liza Dunn on Twitter Food Bullying: How to Avoid Buying BS by Michele Payn Stress-Proof Your Life with Eliz Greene Food Bullying Podcast’s Facebook Page

Misinformation in our nutrition guidelines has been the standard for over 40 years. There is a new move to normalize obesity as if it can be healthy. The USDA and Nutrition Academy is compromised by sponsorships and contracts from large food corporations. People with Type 2 Diabetes and obesity are more likely to be intubated or die from Covid-19 Stearic Acid improves mitochondrial efficiency, energy production. "Sacred Cow" documentary is now available internationally on Amazon, I-Tunes and other apps explaining the nutritional benefit of red meat as well as the role of ruminants like cows and sheep in regenerative agriculture. Fake meat like Beyond Burger is just another processed food to avoid. I changed my diet this last year to include more animal protein after talking to many who follow a carnivore diet. The fear of cholesterol has been leveraged to sell the trillion dollar drugs called statins. Check out previous podcast with Dr. Aaron Wenzel for more information about the role of cholesterol in the body. Type 2 Diabetes is being reversed by medical professionals like Jason Fung & Megan Ramos, Dr, Kristen Baier and Sarah Hallberg using intermittent fasting and/or a low carb diet. The message is: "Ignore the Guidelines" The nutritional lies have been repeated so often that when presented with the truth, people don't believe it. Challenge to you: For one month, increase your animal protein to at least 1 pound or 500g of meat per day. Reduce processed food, sugar and alcohol. Eat 2-3 meals a day at most. Eat meat and/or eggs at every meal. Doesn't have to be perfect. Just move forward. LINKS: Sarah Hallberg: Ignore the Guidelines Should Dietary Guidelines Recommend Low Red Meat Intake? Brandon Handley 0:00 Chapter Chapter five, you can change the universe we're going through, are you ready to succeed by sukumar Rao, if you are digging some of this material, I will let you know that there is a course that he offers called creating personal mastery, it's available online, I'll go ahead and include a link to it. Let me know if you're trying to get into there. And if you want more information, I can tell you that I am I have applied myself and will be taking it later this year. And I encourage you to check it out. One of the reasons I signed up is because this to me, Sreekumar Rao is a master, right? There's very few that I know of, that we have access to that can teach this material the way that he does, and makes it and turns it into practical application, something that you can use every day everywhere in every way. So not a paid endorsement. But I do want you to know that it's something that resonates with me, obviously, I mean, that's why I'm digging so deeply into this material so that it's something that sticks to me, something becomes a part of me. And if it is, again, if it's something that is of interest to you. Go ahead, check it out. I'll leave a link to that one as well. Look, I'm making another note CPN wasn't even planned. Link on part three. And let's head into, you can influence the universe and create miracles. This is a this is a chapter that I shared with a friend of mine. A couple years back now while I was on the plane out to Denver, and we were having miracle conversations, I think that I was going through a course in miracles. And I was heavily influenced by a Course of Miracles. I was heavily influenced by Abraham Hicks, neville goddard, I was deep into that material. And I was seeing Listen, personally, I was seeing all kinds of miracles happening in my life. So again, I've got it right here. He's not this is this is like a sub chapter within the chapters. I think that this is the gooey goodness part of the best, one of the best pieces of the book, as far as I'm concerned. So right now most of us, you are probably so convinced that you are separate from the universe. And you spent most of your life pointing to your powerlessness that there's no there's no way. There's no way that you will you can create miracles. Right? No way. The thing is that you need to look for look for the connection, right? Create the conduct your direct creator, a guaranteed right. What would you like to create in your life? Unknown Speaker 3:05 What would you like? Brandon Handley 3:08 What would you like to create? Right? You need to have the firm conviction that the universe has intervened for you on your behalf if you have not listened to. Here's another note for myself to make. If you have not listened to Alan Watts, trust the universe is another lecture. Go listen to that. I'll put that I'll put that in the podcast notes as well. Unknown Speaker 3:30 You need to Brandon Handley 3:31 learn how to trust the universe as another as if it were another and you have to begin to believe in some way shape or another that this is a benevolent universe. How have you gotten to where you gotten to today? Again, if you are listening to this podcast, there's a good chance you're better off than when you know your news. Random percentages at least 80% of the world. All right. Mute, clean running water. Do you have a roof over your head? Do you have food in your fridge? Do universe man I mean? What are the odds at first of all, it's one in 400. Like what trillion that you're born? That's that's just the beginning of it. But now you're on a country with are we seven eight I don't know how many billions that we're at. You are one of the lucky ones that has clean running water. You are one of the lucky ones that has electricity a switch you can flip on even even if you were listening to this in a shelter, you are in a shelter with clean running water with electricity with a warm running bed with soup food. This is a benevolent universe, okay? So, you know, look, you need to create that connection for yourself. And, and initially that may not be easy, especially if you've got some filters, you know, set up you've got you've got some kind of filters and walls and you can't see it that way. That's okay too. But But again, realize, at this point as we've gone through this chapter, that is your choice you choose, you make that choice. Okay? So he uses the idea of parking spot, right? Maybe you're trying to find a parking spot, and all of a sudden you got lucky, you found a parking spot, right where you wanted to find it. And what a coincidence, I wanted a parking spot, just like that. And there it was. But you would consider that a coincidence. The other idea is like, Oh, well, what about when you learn to play tennis, you know, you've got your forehand, backhand. And, and at some point in time, like you're, when you're learning to play, it's hard, right? It's a challenge. It's when you go all the times when you put in the practice is when you put in the effort, it's when you have someone working along with you, that can teach you as well. And at some point, it clicks. And then you say to yourself, Well, that's because I put the work hands because I put the effort in is because I learned how to play tennis with someone who knew how to play tennis, I had all the lessons, and it just works. And now I'm a great fucking tennis player. Right. The other example that I would use, you know, in this is just for my son, right now he's going from, you know, playing on a tablet, to try to use a computer, right, and the controls are eminently different. The same time, you know, he's going to have to learn it one point, if he wants to, you know, advance with the computer, how to knock it all out. And he'll sit there and say, Well, you know, I've been, you know, for years on the mobile, and it's gonna take me forever to do the computer. However, again, little bites built up over time. And at some point, when you look back, you will realize that you were always capable. And it wasn't until you begin to take serious efforts and move towards that what you know, you're capable of that it begins to click. So it goes, Hey, understand which one of these models will serve you best, right? If you want to consider everything a coincidence. And and in practically random with zeros system with the zero way to, to kind of recreate that, at how's that going to serve you? How will that methodology and mental model serve you? Right? He says the second model where we know you're learning how to play tennis until it all clicks, this is the one this is the one this transformative, right? This is the one that's powerful, capable of delivering results. You don't have to take my word for it. You don't have to take his word for it. Here's what you got to do is try it. The cost to you? minimal, you don't need to share this with anybody. I love this too. I think Let me see if it gets in. If it gets into it yet. Hold on. We'll get to it. Right? We'll get to it. So you know, how do you do it? Right? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? And that's when you think of a friend when you think of a phrase, you know, sometimes you send out like these mental signals and you do with a light touch of emotion. And you just kind of say, Hey, you know, the universe is going to let that happen for me. Deal is it's like you don't recognize you don't consider these miracles. You consider them again, you consider them like, you know, why would it What a coincidence, I was just, I was just thinking of you Mike, what a coincidence, I was just thinking he Tom. Or maybe when you see a phrase or you've got a favorite song. And that song shows up in the next show that you watch or you know, you hop in the car and you listen to the radio because you still have one and your favorite song comes on. I can't believe I was just singing that song. I'll give you an example to my house. My current house it's very you know, I would go to sleep at night and I would visualize this this really interesting shaped house like almost like a U shaped house with Windows on each side. So you can see the people walking on either side and like wave to them and it was in this kind of perfect wood setting. And it was it was peaceful and remote. And guys, ladies gals it happened right and the thing is, I didn't have like a bunch of emotional energy tied up into it. I had this kind of this thought this idea and I let it go. Right. But I had it repeatedly. I had it often. But I didn't in didn't put this. Too much pressure onto it or too much energy into it as though it had to happen. It'd be nice I didn't you know, I didn't have this grand expectation that it had to happen. So, um, doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo money, right? money too. These are just a couple more examples. Last year here before I did really powerful exercise where I was just doing a budgetary exercise. And I not something that I'm super big on doing, but the exercise was to write down, you know, kind of all your debt, how much you make, and how much would you like to make yada, yada, and then add on 15% get real clear on kind of what you want to use it for what your intentions are, and all this other stuff. A year later, I had like almost the exact amount. So and and, and when I tell you like it was it was more than I expected. It was more. I didn't, you know, I couldn't think of it as real, right? Because I couldn't, I couldn't have thought about that going forward. Now looking back, I can see this as a miracle, right? I can write down this as a miracle. And that's exactly what it says. To do here. Pay careful attention to such happenings explicitly. Recognize, acknowledge and break them down. list what happened the date the time, permit yourself to feel elated and write them down, write down the feeling as well. You know, that's that dude. Somewhere It really is. It's crazy how it will happen. And then mentally play with the idea that these are not coincidences. Albert Einstein, either everything's a miracle or nothing is a miracle. Okay. And then work through this. As I said, trust the universe as though or another so noted as the universe trying to make itself known to you assist the Universe by saying, hey, universe, Unknown Speaker 11:55 I see you. Brandon Handley 11:56 I see you given me all this, and I thank you. Right, give thanks. Believe what is the line that I've been shouting recently is believe receive and gift thanks, grateful. You let it go and give something to somebody else. I mean, that's a, we're getting into the next chapter already, I get myself anyways. So assisted by showing some attention, create miracles with the expectation that they will happen at least 50 times a day. This is I need to do more work on this. This is why I'm not rushing through this book. Because I need to pay attention to the lessons I need to motivate myself inspire myself to do these more myself, what's this game, why I'm going through this, this is not just to share it with you, so that I pay close attention to details of what I know will make me successful and, and take action on some of these things, right? So listen, there will be flubs, there will be there's no out of those 50 I don't know how many you're gonna get, Unknown Speaker 13:04 I don't have any, I Brandon Handley 13:04 don't know what your belief system is, right? I don't know how many filters you've got set up, I don't know how clogged up your drains are to let some of this shit in. And that's gonna, you know, that's gonna, that's gonna impact a lot, it's going to impact a lot of what happens there. So the deal is, there are going to be some don't come come through, right? There are going to be some that do. Focus on those wins, jot them down, write them down, say, Whoa, feel elated. Let it happen. And initially, you know, this, this is going to change, this is going to change your way of thinking. And you're going to be excited, and you're going to call it out. But over time, over time, this is going to just become a part of your daily, it's gonna become part of your daily, you're going to begin to accept that the universe does work in this manner that you do need to close the universe as though it were another just get into it, man, give it a shot. As you as you kind of begin to accept it for yourself, you're going to notice that the number of events that you consider miracles are going to increase. This is when you need to, you know, take this as a signal to start making bigger and more important things to happen. Our belief systems have so many walls up and filters in the way for this that even even if you see the small ones happening, it's challenged to start making this larger leap. I'm only telling you because that's been true for me. And I need to take this to heart myself and and start making bigger and more important things happen and allowing for the universe. Right? And I don't think that there's any better time then than right now especially as we we head into the Age of Aquarius. Look, I'm not like this astrological. All these things but let's use some of these things as symbols and like when they show up in your life as parts of miracles and all the other stuff, of all the times of all the things of everything happening in the universe right now. We're living in a pretty crazy awesome time, right Frank and junction moved into the Age of Aquarius, when 400 trillion. Listen, the start to use some of our galaxy billions of galaxies, right? Just imagine that some of these forces are taking place in your life right now how can you apply them as though this were some type of mental kung fu and you're going to use the, you're going to use the the great momentum of the universe to to your own benefit. And so at some point, though, this becomes commonplace and simply a way of life. I have this one thing with my with Meg, who's got her Etsy shop up and running. And sometimes, so no, say hey, well, I didn't make that much money this week, or you're just talking about the the amount of money that you're making, as large or small, then you know what, take away these labels, and just realize that it's a happening, it is happening. That is, it's not it's not a large or small thing happening. It's happening, period. And it is a miracle. If that's how you want to see it. We're gonna pause on this one, and then we're gonna jump into who, let's let's, I don't know how many, how much longer it's gonna take. But like I said, I think this is a really powerful chapter, one of the most powerful chapters in my mind. And one of the ones that if you're not going to apply any of the other ones, apply this 100% Welcome back spiritual dope. We are headed through what are we headed through, we're headed through, are you ready to succeed, you can change the universe, we just got done finishing up with how to create miracles in your life. And right now we're going to go through a couple of the helpful hints, a couple of helpful hints and of creating miracles. First of all, do not share this process with others. And the reason is, is they will share their skepticisms and bring you down if you're not familiar with the story of the kui crab. Or the crabs in a bucket story is the idea that as the crabs are trying to leave the buckets, the crabs beneath it will reach up and pull it back down right almost as to say, Hey, don't go out past that room. We don't know what's out there can't be safe, you better stay here in this bucket with us. When you try to share this miracle mindedness stuff with others, they will poopoo you and they will you know, wet blanket, Debbie Downer all that shit. So here's the deal. Do it silently. And allow for your own fate to develop a lot. See this stuff for yourself. Start with something small. Write start with small stuff. And the reason I say start with small stuff is because it'll be easier for you to see it happen with small stuff than it will with the large stuff right here. You just trust me on that one. Right? And allow for your own faith to develop allow for yourself to build that muscle of miracle, you know, miracle creative muscles. And it may take longer for some than others. And that's okay, stick with it. You know, if you if you've made it this far, and you'd be gone at all. Here's the thing is, if you've done it at all, if you've done it once, if you've done it twice, if you did just one day of it, then you probably saw a result. All right. And you can't go back after that. You can't go back after that. So you can produce miracles. You can engineer coincidences. There's the the the idea even in the beginning of the book is like you can make these serendipitous moments happen. He shares a story in the book I'm not gonna I'm gonna go ahead and go pass it. I'm trying I'm trying to think of some of my own. The house was one right The house was one my job so the work that I've ever gotten in my life evolved been in by some shape or form a miracle. The job that I currently have right now is is something that I did not consciously create, but I did consciously create so how does it how does how does that look? So right now I work at a technology company, a service provider company that you can we have over, we have hundreds, almost like, you know, 1000s of OEMs. And, and some of them are huge right now, if you look at Microsoft, Amazon, and then you look at the industry that I get to play in, it's with gaming media and all this other stuff. And the thing is, these are all things that like I looked up to and love as I was growing up, and now I find myself smack dab in the middle of being able to help these people create the things that I loved, right? So I get to participate in gaming at Activision Blizzard conversations with them. Me and Microsoft, it's just crazy. Right? So how does that happen? To guy that, you know, never finished college. Unknown Speaker 20:55 Right? Brandon Handley 20:56 How do I end up in this place in space, it's not something that I kind of created by way of miracle, right. And if I, even if I go back, and I look at it, I did create it consciously at some point where I said, hey, yeah, that's the job. I would like, I'm not going to shove and push and, you know, all this force and energy into it, this is what I like. And it did come to me by by way more of of allowance. And buy, don't believe receive and give thanks. It showed up right when I needed it. Right when I you know, pandemic hate. This job showed up and in a way that I needed it more than anything else. And that's not a miracle. I don't know what is right. So I'm willing to look at it that way. And I'm willing to go back and look at it my Unknown Speaker 21:57 own. Brandon Handley 22:03 My own my part in the process, right? How did I How did I take part in this? And I did not do it by myself. I did it with the help of the universe, I could have done it by myself, how does somebody do anything by themselves? They don't? Again, it's when they think that they are the ones doing it all by themselves that I think that there's a large there's a restriction of flow of restriction on the flow of what is possible for you, especially if you feel like you've got to do it all by yourself. How much can do by yourself? versus how much can you do with the assistance of the universe? Who's on your side at all times? All right. riddle me that Batman so so here, listen, to change, to change your universe, discard the model of frantic doing this is also awesome one. Honestly, this is another one that you let go of the frantic doing when you practice a little bit of surrender when you when you take on the ownership of I'm not doing this by myself, I'm doing this with the universe. Because this sigh of relief, right sigh of relief, a little bit of calm wash this whole view and a little bit of allowing the power, the energy that creates worlds right connection to source to flow through you and towards that what you truly desire. That's a fabulous feeling. So the current model of life for most is the harder I work, the luckier I get. Now listen, I believe I believe in preparation, and believe in pre paving. I believe in creating a vision, I believe in establishing a goal I believe in walking towards it, right. That's all part of visualization. That's all part of having faith in yourself. I mean, it's no different. But the you know, to put a huge emotional focus and energy into a specific way of how it has to happen that is by your own plan and by your own design. Leave you leave a lot to be desired in that on this and so the harder I work the luckier I get this is like in relationships, you know, how many times have you struggled to get into relationship and in the end of that relationship, you got the girl you want and you live in the house that you want to live in, in the neighborhood that you want to be in at all fuckin sucks. And you end up like you're on a hamster wheel and, and you're like, you're like, well, this is this. I've been around people like this. Right? This is just how life is this is the reality of life. This is everybody goes through this. This is that. It's no different for everybody else. Everybody does this. Unknown Speaker 24:58 That's not Brandon Handley 24:59 fucking True. That's not true. It can't be true. Right? This is a reality, this is not the reality. And you get to choose which model of reality you are going to work with. So when you change, so does the universe. The the alternate to frantic doing is calm being, Bob Proctor has a line for this one. Yeah, he goes, I don't need to slow down, I need to calm down. And this, this brings to mind, the idea of when you excite when you are excited, and molecules are excited, there is a there's a frenzy that's built, there's just bounce around every which way in every direction. Or that and then there's, you know, calmness, a surety of confidence that happens by repeated practice over time, right? That's when you go and you do the things you know, you wrestle with your kids, and you know that it's calm, and it's easy, you're not not you're not expending too much energy. You write your name, you do the things that you do every day, there's a calmness that you do within, right, and you can find that same calmness in everything. It's just a matter of again, you know, something happens, something pops up, you don't overreact to it, you step back, you take a breath, you realize, hey, what's happening here in this moment, right? Use the witness, leverage the witness, as you begin to Nugent leverage to leverage the mental chatter, all the stuff. So and you'll begin to understand that each time as you're changing your mental models, as you go forward, you are becoming different person. And the interesting thing is that the universe has no choice. This is a his his words. industry, the universe has no choice but to change in accordance with the person that you will become. If you haven't heard that from Bob Proctor. If you haven't heard that from Abraham Hicks, if you haven't heard that, from the Bible, Buddha, I don't know every you know, the people that have made it. Throughout the millennia. Elan musk even has most recently a line, you know, of, you know, every person's got a level of understanding that at some point, when you get to that level of understanding, and you begin to see this happen for yourself. It's pretty intense, right? So many cases, as men, he says it's more efficient to do the internal work, meaning again, just like I said, there, do some of this to sort of voices judgment, clear outside mental clutter, lovers, lovers, the lovers to witness and all that type of internal work, do the gratitude and, and you're gonna feel like a different person, you are going to project or you see a mirror of who you become on the external, that doesn't mean that they're still not the external stuff that needs to get done. I still have to reply to emails, I still have to record this podcast, I still need to send it out, I still need to, you know, do all the external stuff, show love, eat all these things, right? You still need to do those things. Just much less than you thought sometimes it's great to let go of some of the timelines and the ways that you think things have to happen and allow for them to happen. And sometimes they happen in ways that are much more to just cooler, right? They're very, they're much cooler, they're much more spontaneous. There. They are miracle stories, you could tell them here like wow, that happened in a way that I never could have written about right? I never could have forecasted. But it does, right. He says the example he uses of kind of searching for a job. And when you become clear on what it is that you want, the universe will show itself to you with ease, meaning the path will open up for you and it becomes quicker and instead of it. It's kind of like take the idea of a walk in sand dunes in the Sahara right walking up sand is is a pain. Yes. And takes a lot of energy. you exert yourself and it's just hot and annoying and sand everywhere. Nope, nope. no bueno. Versus getting hot to lose track right? It becomes so fast and accelerate even think about the Hyperloop right? You just you just get sucked in and pulled in along the way and it's so crazy because you're not you're not Pushing anymore you're being pulled out, I'm just thinking about it because it's so true, like methley is so true. And there's just there's this way that that happens. And with ease doesn't mean that it's easy, right? It does mean that it is with ease. And there's this, there's this wonderful sensation that happens when you're doing it. So practice over time. So it says here, largest, largest stumbling block, I mean, flip over to the page. It's a, one of the largest stumbling blocks is Unknown Speaker 30:44 to do to do Brandon Handley 30:48 that, I mean, look, the largest on the block to me, I can't find it right here is that we? We, we don't believe yet, right? The largest stumbling block is that we don't believe. And, of course, if we don't believe we can't perceive what's happening in front of us. And you will believe that all this stuff is happening when you start seeing it in front of you. I'm sorry, I lost track there, guys. So as we kind of, you know, there's gonna be the frantic, you're not gonna be able to stop the frantic doing right away, right? So you'll keep doing that. But at the same time, start doing some of these smaller things where you do allow for the universe to step in, and you allow for universe to participate with you. Right? It is and it is allowing you're not it's it's funny, because you're not the center of the universe is allowing you to do something as you are allowing the universe to work with you. It's like I Oh, come on in. Right, like can't Yeah, vampires can't come into your house unless you invite them in. Same thing with universe you can't come in and can't work with you in a way that is in tandem, right in a way that is beneficial to both unless you to agree to work with each other. Right? And if you're if you're a fan of like, all that stuff, right? You most likely sign some type of soul contract somewhere with the universally hey, here's how this is gonna go now. And universe is gonna show up, knock on the door and like, go away. I'm busy. I got the chicken under control. And the thing is, you don't right. You're frantic. You're going crazy with it. And you're like, at some point, you have this breakdown this meltdown, you're like, this is fucking bullshit. Life sucks. And you're like, I could really use some hope. And you let the universe like knocks again, you're like, go away, I don't believe you. And then one day, you're just like, fine. Okay, come on in. Let's go. Right? I'm gonna go back to the idea of, you've got beliefs so deep right now that this is impossible for you. Most likely, right? that these aren't interference on the reception to and from the universe. Work on your reception, right? work on allowing, you know, allow it allowance could be something just as simple as somebody gives you a compliment. Work on that. Because if you don't accept compliments, if you don't accept gifts, if you don't accept just a simple Thank you with grace and ease, how are you going to accept the infinite power of the universe to flow through you as again? You agreed to do with it when you came in, right, that's probably on the back of some universal bar napkin that has you know, tear stains and and shenanigans on the back of it. Like oh, man, I love you, man. Let's Unknown Speaker 33:42 go to sleep tonight. And Brandon Handley 33:43 you wake up next day you're on planet Earth, you know what the fuck does happen? anywho. So let's say keep track of your successes. Ignore the failures. Keep doing what works. I mean, this is another one that I got from Bob Proctor as well. You know, stop doing the shit. That doesn't work. Right? That didn't work. Stop doing it. That did work. Wow, that works. Keep doing more of that. Right? That works with children that works with your job that works everywhere. On a run right to the end here. You know, a note of caution. Once you head down this direction, you can't go back. There's no going back. It's like the fucking matrix. Man. It's like the red pill blue pill. You can't unknow this. You can't undo this. Once you create and accept miracles in your life. Once you see your life as America once you see that everything is a miracle. You're in man, you're injured. You're part of the you're part of the circle of trust. Right? You will be teamed up with the universe Do you need Who else do you need with you at that point? Right. And you may think this is shenanigans you may think and slop jokes you may believe this can't be possible for you. real question is what do you have to lose? I can think of a couple things you might be able to lose, you might be able to lose 10 minutes of a crappy show that you watch on TV, you might lose 10 minutes of the news, you might lose 10 minutes of sleep, if you went to go to 10 minutes a day, right is all that it is all it takes to create a miracle. And if you're not willing to create miracles, or see them show up in your life, for the absolute cost of 10 minutes of your life a day. Again, your choice, no problem, no skin off my back. I'm just here to present some information. And I'm here to do it as objectively as I can. But also, I've had these experiences myself. So what do you have to lose? Try it out. Keep with it, you absolutely will find yourself in a whole new world. And, you know, even he's even even Dr. Houses in his book, because it's not here to make, you know, shove this on you. Where's, where's it, I get to the back of the book, no to caution, did it. Unknown Speaker 36:09 Just look, Brandon Handley 36:12 because I have seen innumerable people discover this from sales, I cannot provide you with persistence that you'll have to supply from within yourself. He says, trust me when I say it'll be well worth it. You've got supply around persistence, right? You've got to you know, you've got to be the one that is able to supply your own belief. You've got to be the one that identifies and labels it as such, again, those are yours to create. And this is your reality, right? This is a reality, not the reality, your model. How can you put this to work for you? And, you know, where's the last line here, one second here, I'll pause it for a second while I go look for it with there it is when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change, ah, how many times I hear that before implementing some of the stuff into my own life, tons of times. And every time it got that same noise out of me. So try it for yourself and see if it doesn't happen for yourself. Again, the worst thing that can happen is that maybe it doesn't work out for you. And you chalk it up to bullshit and shenanigans or you begin. I hate to say you begin because you always have created miracles. But now you begin to notice that you are the one who's influencing the universe. You begin to see exactly how powerfully you are able to show up when you allow yourself to show up. And that's going to wrap us up Transcribed by https://otter.ai

An early podcast, because this week is a weird holiday week! Ignore the many instances where we say it’s coming out on Thursday in this podcast! Heading back to the early days of the playstation, this episode pits us once again against a certain type of anime war story that we’ve encountered before, and just how much a game about nothing can be entertaining if it’s breezy enough. I Like Your Work: Conversations with Artists, Curators & Collectors
Adrienne Elise Tarver is an artist who makes hard work look easy. From her expansive studio practice, to her position as the Associate Chair of Fine Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta Campus, Adrienne is able to gracefully accomplish making insightful, challenging work while also organizing a great spreadsheet. In this episode, we talk about how she balances art making and organization to achieve success. With a practice that spans painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and video, Tarver’s work addresses the complexity and invisibility of black female identity in the Western landscape, from the history within domestic spaces to the fantasy of the tropical seductress. “I often use the tropics as a starting point to look at the complexity of origin stories and histories of displacement. Using this familiar imagery, I confront artists like Paul Gauguin and Henri Rousseau and their imaginations of the tropics, considering the problematic perspective from which they were creating, and challenging the ideas they have perpetuated. Recent work seeks to go beyond the origin story and investigate the future. Pulling from nearly forgotten histories and exploiting the inability to create a true or accurate representation of an ancestral home, I collect imagery and ideas that resonate internally. Throughout my practice, I wonder: if mythologies from an imperialistic past can so thoroughly permeate our present identities, can we re-configure the narrative to create new realities? If our current struggles are indeed a sign of progress, can we look forward and claim our space for a better reality in the future?” -Adrienne Tarver She has exhibited nationally and abroad, including museum shows at the Bronx Museum of the Arts and Children’s Museum of Manhattan, as well as solo exhibitions at Ochi Projects in Los Angeles; Wave Hill in the Bronx, NY; Victori+Mo in New York; BRIC Project Room in Brooklyn; and A-M Gallery in Sydney, Australia. She has been commissioned for an upcoming New York MTA project, received the inaugural artist commission prize for Art Aspen in 2019 and was selected by ArtNet as one of “14 Emerging Female Artists to watch in 2017.” She has been featured in online and print publications including the New York Times, Brooklyn Magazine, ArtNet, Blouin Art Info, Whitewall Magazine, Hyperallergic, Ingenue Magazine, among others. She is currently the Associate Chair of Fine Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta Campus (SCAD Atlanta). Gal has some interesting insights on some of the ongoing changes in how companies are integrating security within DevOps practices including: Security must be iterative. Security must mimic software development and become an interactive process. Gone are the days when the security team conducts an exhaustive review and audit of software code after the application development is completed. The better approach is to incorporate security at every stage of the development process. Patch fast or die. As software release schedules have accelerated to a daily event, the potential for software vulnerabilities has also increased. Rather than viewing this as a problem, security teams should view this as an opportunity to match the rapid pace of software development with the rapid identification and fixing of these vulnerabilities. Ignore software licenses at your own peril: 80% of software is built using open source components yet many developers fail to understand the rules before embedding it within their software.
