If you have a child, you will have definitely thought about how technology and social media has completely changed the way that we parent.Elizabeth was really helpful, in a mind blowing way, when it comes to helping me realise what I am so afraid of when it comes to the games that my kids are obsessed with that I do not understand. In this conversation, we go places that I didn't expect to go. She talked about virtual reality and IRL which was such an education for anyone who has children who are engaging in technology. This is a conversation that you CANNOT miss.Highlights [05:59] How Elizabeth views the inevitable every day failures[24:50] A discussion around how we use technology and how we understand how it is affecting our children[33:49] Coming down from the virtual world to the real world[46:13] The fundamentals to entrepreneurshipQuotes“The main thing for me when considering those [my] three career choices was accepting what failure might look like, for whichever actions or whichever aspirations I was going to go towards. And therefore, whichever scenario I chose, because I had already visualised what my worst case scenario was, then I couldn't really fail.”“If you always have your worst case scenario as your base, then you can try anything.”“The motivation to make money has to come from somewhere.”“As parents, we could almost see ourselves as curators of technology. If you've decided that TikTok isn't for you because you're a lawyer, think again. Tik Tok is not an app “just for kids.” It is a great space to shine for all things branding. Attorney Elisabeth Pickle, founder of Mindful Counsel, shares how she has used TikTok to attract new clients and generate referrals while being true to herself and her nature. According to TikTok for Business, it is a space to “unleash your brand's creative side, a fully immersive, no judgment world where there's an audience for every void, no matter how big or small your business…” Elisabeth discovered that there were many other professionals already on TikTok, and it was a place where she could answer audience questions. While some of her colleagues wouldn't dream of using TikTok for marketing, Elisabeth has found that it is a way for her to be there for the client. Ultimately, she is here for the people. If TikTok helps her reach people and gets them thinking about estate planning and intellectual property, then that is what she cares about. About this episode My guest this week is Elizabeth Grojean, founder of Baloo Living. Baloo living is an ecommerce brand that launched with a singular product…a weighted blanket. Within a few months of her launch the Baloo blanket was on every single Holiday Shopping Guide as “the blanket of the holidays”. Her story is remarkable for a few reasons and I'm super pumped to bring it to you. First, her business launch didn't start from a product or service…it started from a channel. Elizabeth knew that she wanted to build an ecommerce brand…she just needed to figure out what category. Secondly, in this episode she shares with us the tactics she used to discover what category to enter based on her Amazon data analysis. You are going to want to make sure to listen to this full episode with pen and paper in hand because she unpacks each step just for you! But before we get to the success story…we need to make sure we understand the full journey because every single chapter of our journey contributes to where we are today…ESPECIALLY Elizabeth's entrepreneurial journey. In this episode, you'll hear: How Elizabeth grew up in Houston with her dad who was entreperial. She moved to Texas when she was young as her Dad opened a RV Park. When leaving high school she felt very confused about her future, so thought that doing a marketing degree would open multiple doors for her. After graduating she still didn't have an understanding of what she wanted to do, so went and worked for her dad at an Architecture engineer firm. This was a good experience but yearned to move to New York. She shares how she felt like a failure in her mid twenties because she hadn't found what she wanted to do in her life. She shares how she seeked help to understand what was holding her back mentally. Elizabeth shares how she wanted to work in a startup and ended up working at Casa Dragones as the executive assistant for Bertha Gonzalez Nieves. This experience taught her many valuable lessons that she took forward when running her own business. How she used her savings and went to Bali to clear her head, this allowed herself to be vulnerable and not hide behind a label of a job title. Returning from Bali to New York she wanted to find a job that fitted around her new lifestyle. Elizabeth explains how becoming an entrepreneur she found her passion but now was searching for a product to sell. How she used E-commerce to find a product to sell, the power in Keyword Volume analytics, brought her to find her weighted blankets. Elizabeth explains that using a weighted blanket for the first time was a religious experience and she built her brand around expressing that feeling. She explains that her Dad offered to fund the company, at first she turned down the offer but then accepted it as she knew he believed in her and the product. How she went back to Bail and launched the company from there. How using a PR company opened doors for the company and in her first launch she sold out. Awhile back, I read this book, Why We're Polarized by Ezra Klein and it explains why the state of political discourse is so polarized and the answer is actually not the absence of social media. It says that in America, the political system incentivizes polarization, leading to the way that it is today. We all operate at lot based on our habits - those things we do with little-to-no thinking. The problem is that we have many habits that don't support good health. Formerly a software executive, life and weight-loss coach Elizabeth Sherman joins us on the podcast to share how to build healthy habits into your life. Elizabeth traveled a lot. Her mother’s breast cancer really took a toll on Elizabeth. Her death spurred her to research how to live her healthiest life. Ultimately, she wanted to find out how to prevent breast cancer. In her research, she found that being overweight contributed in a significant way, not just for cancer, but for a variety of serious health problems. Going through something of a midlife crisis, she was laid off. Her therapist recommended becoming a life coach. She developed a plan for understanding habit forming. First, it was knowledge. Know what you need to do. Second, habits. Create habits that will contribute to the healthy goals you have. Accomplishing her half-marathon goal allowed her to finally see herself as an athlete. Elizabeth explains the five-band triangle for habits: Environment Creating Habits Skills Beliefs and Values Your Identity The top band is the environment. You want to “peg” a new habit to something that you’re already doing. She gives an example of physically putting your floss next to your toothbrush if you want to start a new habit of flossing. The second band is creating habits that then support that environment. Meal planning is an example of this. The third band are the skills you need to execute those habits. Cooking is one example because cooking skills can support your healthy eating habits. The bottom band is your identity. Once you identify as a certain kind of person, your identity can inform beliefs and values (the fourth band). All of these support the skills, the habits, and environment. Elizabeth discusses how to change your negative thoughts into positive thoughts. You have to believe in your own self-worth to start to commit to positive actions. Episode Topics: Elizabeth shares a story about her mother. Being a vegetarian was all she knew toward eating better. How Elizabeth’s view of habit development has changed. Elizabeth completes a half-marathon and she begins to identify as an athlete. “Pegging” new habits to old ones. Why do some of us pick up some habits more easily? Considering your identity can drive all the change. Uncovering limiting beliefs. It’s easier to examine your family’s belief than your own.

Today, Elizabeth will be sharing about how to live an embodied life in difficult times. Plus, she’ll share how everything we’ve always needed has always been inside of us and what that means for you. This could be one of the most special episodes I’ve recorded so far because of how much this practice has impacted my own life. It's Not About the Food: Intuitive Eating, Anti-Diet, Body Positivity with Dr. Stefani Reinold
How our childhood affects our relationship with food and our bodies is an important discussion. It's no secret that for many of us, childhood is where we first heard words that our bodies weren't good enough or that we couldn't trust ourselves around food. And it can be more paramount in families with other "dysfunctional" elements and brokenness. This week I'm talking with my friend, Elizabeth Oates. Elizabeth is an author, speaker, and mother of 5 who is passionate about helping women ditch the guilt and embrace freedom. After growing up in a broken family herself, she found real freedom beyond her childhood pains and wants to now spread that same truth to others. She wrote the book, Mending Broken Branches: When God Reclaims Your Dysfunctional Family Tree, and she is also podcast host of the show, Asking for a Friend. In this interview, we discuss: What Elizabeth's definition of "dysfunction" is How Elizabeth's dysfunctional childhood affected her relationship with food and her body How her lack of a father figure affected her childhood How her spiritual life transformed her healing The differences between shame around food and shame with exercise---> some really interesting lightbulb moments for ya here! How she speaks to her own children regarding food What Dr. Reinold thinks of FitBits, counters, and tracking devices and so much more! It's Not About the Food.... Today’s show is a blast because we get to jam with Dialto! She is one of the ONLY people I know personally who is a coach and comedian at the same damn time lol. So as you can imagine this episode will be filled with insight and entertainment (my two favorite things). I am not much for the gram, but I love hers. I feel she does a great job of adding nuance to our very obnoxious meme magazine life on the internet. So check her out for sure. In this episode we talk about tuning into our bodies to guide us through life, cut through the noise and point us back to ourselves. We talk about boundaries, restoration, and what happens to people who don’t find what they need. Enjoy. In this episode you will hear: -Elizabeth’s story, how she got into energetic body work and her discoveries along the way -About the path behind the book that Elizabeth wrote called “Untame yourself” and how it’s not just about physical fitness, but it’s also about connecting to your body through movement and emotion -About how when she was a personal trainer, she would help people prep for weddings & discovered that the desire for external approval ran deep and how she started to want to look deeper -Elizabeth’s curious connection between how when women would get their desired physical results something emotional would come up and quickly ruin their progress. -Her own insights into being an alpha chick and how expressing her feminine has evolved -How Elizabeth chose to make the move from personal trainer to wild soul movement bad ass. She wanted to teach them how to work in instead of just working out. She wanted to help them get the key to all of their desired results. – Hear about Elizabeth’s energetic body work and what it is like discovering what it feels like to connect with yourself without shame or hate. – Elizabeth’s ideas surrounding the need for solid boundaries and how without them you will be drained. – Hear about learning how to manage the energetic absorption of the energies you are around. How we have learned unhelpful ways to manage environmental energy depending on what our family and environment taught us -How living in the modern world can tax us energetically especially when you are a sensitive person and have a big justice button (I can SO relate). -How the culture is geared towards everyone gets a trophy and it is getting in the way of accountability and consequences Quotes: “It’s about how to get into the real ‘reel’ of life and not just the highlight reel.” -Elizabeth Dialto “And the teacher said to my mom, ‘I don’t know why your daughter seems to think she needs to be the lawyer of the classroom,’ and my mom said, ‘why don’t you tell me why my daughter thinks your classroom needs a lawyer.” -Elizabeth Dialto “People who check out, they are not engaging with their lives, could lead to addiction, anything in excess instead of engaging with the world” -Elizabeth Dialto “People love enthusiasm, it’s like an oxygen mask for people who lack enthusiasm” -Elizabeth Dialto “Whenever you feel resentful, it’s a sure-fire sign that you have over given. Whenever you feel guilty it’s a surefire sign you feel like you didn’t give enough. “ -Elizabeth Dialto “Listen to your body and start to recognize what yes’ and no’s feel like” -Elizabeth Dialto “Excited and anxious kind of all exist on the same spectrum.” – Elizabeth Dialto “No’s you might feel pain, tension, sick to the stomach, fluttering in the heart that is fear, anxiety can be a very heavy feeling” – Elizabeth Dialto “You do not owe anyone an explanation, just a yes or a no” -Elizabeth Dialto “I started the Awaken the Rebel Movement after I realized I need to give myself permission to be bad sometimes, but now I am getting to the point that it’s not really bad, it is just the truth, it’s just different. My family values being a Doctor or a Lawyer, I’m more an artist.” – Shereen Thor “Advice of the day, #be a huge C#nt” -Shereen Thor “Your team did not perform as well; you do not get a trophy. There needs to be consequences which is really just accountability” – Elizabeth Dialto Resources: www.wildsoulmovement.com @elizabethdialto on instagram www.awakentherebel.com (take the quiz – What Kind of Rebel are You?)
There are still a few spots remaining for my Summer Mastermind! If you are feeling a pull, apply here to get started. www.kellycovert.com/mastermind Here are some of the big topics we talked about… We all know people who are optimistic and pessimistic. Elizabeth talks about how it’s so important what you do with what you’re given! How Elizabeth stalled for 7 years in launching her business because of perfectionism and discusses how important it’s been to release expectations, accept “good enough,” and find the right people on her path Shutting off input and expressing herself creatively helps her be able to stay in the present moment, even if it’s a short meditation and journal period in the morning Seeing optimism in smaller steps than one obstacle Seeing the potential for the best in yourself and others can be an opportunity for growth and encouragement, or it can lead to crippling perfectionism. Seek balance! Practical optimism is about shifting your experience to more positivity despite what hardships may happen. See the good, improve the world around you, and learn! In Elizabeth’s Voice “I’m very driven and I always think there’s something more to be working towards and improving. I’m also embracing the good in ‘what is,’ even if it doesn’t always look good on the surface.” “I stopped seeing the good in front of me, or the good in what was, because I was always looking for how to make it better.” “What’s the point of living an optimistic life if you’re not enjoying the life you’re living now? If you’re only looking to the future, you’re missing out on so much in the moment.” “If we’re just thinking optimistically towards the future we’re not actually doing anything to create that or move towards that. Action gets us out of where we are, gives us opportunities to learn, and teaches us lessons in how to apply optimism.” “I attribute so much of the fulfillment and success I have in my life to living optimistically. I look for opportunities rather than be shut down by obstacles. I look for ways to connect and see others. I believe there is so much potential in the world.” Connect with Elizabeth WebsiteBook: The Optimist’s ManifestoInstagram

Elise’s guest today is Elizabeth Letts, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of several novels and two phenomenal horse books: The Eighty-Dollar Champion, which was the winner of the 2012 Daniel P Lenehan Award for Media Excellence from the United States Equestrian Foundation; and The Perfect Horse, which won the 2017 PEN Literary Award for Research Nonfiction. The Eighty-Dollar Champion chronicles the inspiring, true story of destitute immigrant Harry DeLeyer and Snowman, the slaughter-bound plow horse he rescued. Together, Harry and Snowman won post World War II America’s heart by climbing in two short years to the very top of the elite world of show jumping. This beloved pair later appeared on TV shows, the cover of Life magazine, and traveled the world together, giving exhibitions and meeting their devoted fans. Elizabeth’s book, The Perfect Horse, shares the gripping World War II behind-enemy-lines, true story of a small troop of battle-weary American soldiers saving priceless Lipizzan stallions from imminent death. As a lifelong equestrian, Pony Club graduate, and phenomenally gifted writer, Elizabeth is the ideal person to tell these two amazing stories. So compelling are they – and so beautifully written – that these books are a treat for horse lovers and non-horse lovers alike. In this episode, Elizabeth recounts her days writing both books and shares the stories Harry told her about himself and Snowman, the pivotal moments in his life, what it was like interviewing him, and how he described his own relationship with Snowman and what it meant to him. Her research focuses on using nanotechnology to understand the movement of molecules in the brain. She is particularly focused on better ways to treat brain diseases like autism, stroke, traumatic brain injury and epilepsy. Elizabeth is the Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington. She also has an adjunct appointment in the school’s radiology department. Elizabeth and her lab, the Nance Lab, recently was awarded a $1.8-million-dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop quantitative, high resolution imaging and analysis platforms to understand nanoparticle behavior, with a specific focus on the brain. In today’s episode, we discuss: The pushback Elizabeth received in college when she tried to apply chemical engineering to neurological diseases. [00:11:33] How Elizabeth developed the first nanoparticles that could penetrate deep within the brain. [00:13:52] The many potential applications of nanoparticle technology in the treatment of neurological disorders, diseases and injuries. [00:17:10] The structure, and unique functions of the blood-brain barrier. [00:28:11] The dendrimer-NAC conjugates, and how they increase intracellular glutathione to reduce injury in the inflamed brain. [00:35:01] How “disease directing engineering” has the potential to allow for the leveraging of common hallmarks of neurological disease to better deliver therapies. [00:40:19] How change in brain metabolism affects targeted therapeutic deliveries to a specific region of the brain. [00:52:14] Show notes: [00:03:31] Elizabeth talks about growing up in North Carolina and how her family goes back nine generations to the original homesteaders of Charlotte. [00:04:06] Dawn mentions that Elizabeth liked to spend a lot of time outdoors as a child and asks her if it is true that she was especially good at climbing trees. [00:05:12] Dawn asks Elizabeth about her hectic schedule in high school, which, in addition to her studies, included soccer, track and volleyball. [00:06:03] Ken asks Elizabeth when she became interested in science. [00:08:22] Dawn mentions how in North Carolina a person has to decide early on if they are a Chapel Hill fan or a North Carolina State fan. Dawn asks if this culture contributed to Elizabeth going to NC State. [00:09:28] Dawn asks Elizabeth about her decision to major in chemical engineering. [00:11:33] Dawn asks Elizabeth to discuss the pushback she received in college when she tried to apply chemical engineering to neurological diseases. [00:13:52] Ken mentions that Elizabeth developed the first nanoparticles that could penetrate deep within the brain. This was a major reason why Forbes named her one of its “30 Under 30 Disruptive Influencers in Science” back in 2015. He asks if she could talk about the work she did in developing that platform and how it changed the way we might think about delivering drugs in the brain. [00:17:10]Ken mentions that there are many potential applications of nanoparticle technology in the treatment of neurological disorders, diseases and injuries. He asks Elizabeth to describe the structure of a nanoparticle in general, and how it can accomplish targeted delivery of a therapeutic.

Here we are again, welcome to The Creative Nonfiction Podcast, the show where I speak to the best artists about telling true stories. I'm Brendan O'Meara. I gotta say right up top that there's been some serious issues with my hosting, Podomatic for those in the know, with the RSS Feeds. Shows are coming up unavailable in Apple Podcasts and it disappeared from Google Play and Stitcher. They say they're on it, but it's been three days with no improvement. You can still stream the episodes from the embedded player on my website, brendanomeara.com, but in the meantime, downloading through the most popular and widely used platform—Apple Podcasts—is impossible until Podomatic gets it fixed. You might say I've been shopping around for other options. Episode 104 brings back Elizabeth Rush to the podcast. Her new book Rising: Dispataches from the New American Shore (Milkweed Editions) is out. She could be coming to a city near you so check the show notes for the Rising Tour. I think that's what Bruce Springsteen called his tour when his Rising came out. In this episode we talk about: Rising sea levels How to turn bleak material into something beautiful How Elizabeth finds teaching energizing And sexual harassment while doing fieldwork, something she's never been asked about and was happy to get to talk about. So that's where we're at. Please bear with me on the RSS nonsense. If you follow the social feeds, that links you up to my website so go find @CNFPod and @BrendanOMeara on Twitter and @CNFPodcast on Facebook. Follow Elizabeth @ElizabethaRush on Twitter for all things Rising. If you made it this far I suspect you might like the show and want to help it out. Would you mind leaving an honest review on Apple Podcasts? That helps with validation and visibility. Let's try and get to 100. We're 57 ratings away at the moment. If a small fraction of you take out your phones, click on the star you deem appropriate, hit submit, that's all you gotta do and you will have helped out the show in a major way. That takes like 10 seconds, if you want to leave a review, I will still edit a piece of writing up to 2,000 words for your kindness and time. Just send me a screenshot of the review with the date and we'll get started. I also have a great monthly reading list newsletter where I send out four book recommendations and what you might have missed from the world of the podcast. I don't get any kickbacks or anything, so it's just things I dig and endorse for your pleasure. First of the month. No Spam. Can't beat that.

How do you grow and scale a thriving business—without abandoning your values? Can you stay positive in the face of criticism around your price point? And how do you get past people co-opting your work and passing it off as their own? Elizabeth Pape is the designer and founder of Elizabeth Suzann, a women’s clothing label born out of a dislike for excess and a desire for quality. All of her garments are cut and sewn locally in Elizabeth’s Nashville design studio using only the highest quality, natural fiber cloth. Elizabeth is passionate about creating well-designed, long-lasting garments and promoting a minimalist approach to clothing that slows down the rate of consumption. Today, Elizabeth joins me to share her organic transition from making clothing as a hobby to running a team of 35 employees. She explains the ebb and flow of her role as a creative and a business owner and addresses the challenge of saying ‘no’ to growth and financial gain when it compromises her values. I ask her about the courage it took to be transparent with her pricing, and we discuss how Elizabeth Suzann serves as a ‘gateway drug’ to the minimalist, slow fashion culture. Listen in for Elizabeth’s insight on differentiating yourself as an aspiring maker, dealing with plagiarism and competition in the online space, and expanding your business in terms of depth rather than production. Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. Today our guest is Elizabeth Berg, author of The Story of Arthur Truluv, published in November by Random House. Elizabeth was a registered nurse for over ten years before publishing her first novel, Durable Goods. She has since written maybe 25 books (neither of us can probably remember the exact count!) She’s been translated into almost 30 languages, has long been on Bestseller lists. She has won numerous awards and has also published a lot of non-fiction work. Arthur Truluv is a widower, a widower who is still very much in love with his wife. In fact her sees her every day, at the cemetery where he brings a folding chair and lunch and sits and talks. Not only that--he visits graves surrounding his wife’s and talks to their occupants as well. He imagines their lives and in an almost magical way, his description of their day-to-day activities and personalities ring as true as any other part of this novel. One day Arthur spies Maddy, an intelligent and lovely young teen, who is spurned by her classmates, ignored (for the most part) by her father who is also widowed. Maddy’s mother died when she was just an infant. The third main character in this novel is Lucille, who is about Arthur’s age but is more gossipy, ascerbic and certainly more nosy. This triad forms an unlikely but very likable group and they forge a friendship, seamlessly and bonding. How Elizabeth does all this is both touching and natural, without being at all cloyingly sweet or manipulative of the reader. We fall for the characters and remember their names, even the minor ones including Gordon, Arthur’s cat. In all, this is a book that takes you out of this very disruptive daily world and brings you to a place where love, lost and then reborn, allows you to take a fresher look at the world in a much less cynical way (if you tend to be cynical, as I do).

A few weeks ago, a woman named Elizabeth Morris who works in a Sex Toy Store in the UK, contacted me with a link to an article about anal sex. Elizabeth is a content researcher and company merchandiser for Carvaka Sex Toys – which aims to get more people informed and educated about their sex lives. Elizabeth is a self-acclaimed anal sex fan and describes that it is more physically and mentally pleasurable and fulfilling when done right. I am personally not as familiar or experienced with anal sex, so I definitely learned a lot on this episode. Elizabeth found herself giggling over my questions while I fumble for words, further highlighting my inexperience and awkwardness on the subject. Some of the subjects we've covered are: How Elizabeth (and the Carvaka Sex Toys store) wants to educate people about the full spectrum of sexual activities, including anal sex (3:23), thus the article she wrote. Guidelines on anal sex etiquette, the most basic of which being cleanliness where Elizabeth detailed the hygiene rituals recommended pre-anal sex (5:32).
